My David Bowie moment is sort of silly xD I obviously saw Labyrinth as a kid, fell in love! One day in a tv show they mentionned that David was Bi-sexual and me being a 10 year old not knowing what this was (this is back in the 1990's) I open a dictionary and the first defintion of bi-sexual was defined as being like a flower.... so in my head, it stuck that David Bowie was like a flower and i kept that silly romantic idea of him

Well, he sure had a lot of female relationships. On coke and speed and alcohol, I think he slept with anything. And his ex said she found him in bed with Jagger, so wouldn't that make Jagger bi-sexual too! If Bowie had said out of the blue that he was heterosexual, I doubt people would raise eyebrows (like, so?), and as a matter of fact, he did say he was heterosexual, but somehow people didn' t find this very titillating. Eventually he sort of made light of it, being in the 70s when anything and everything was 'ok'. He went out of the box...was curious and explored. Like lots of artists.

Dear Bryan. This was a somewhat cynical comment made in reaction to the over the top public outpourings at the time of the great man's death. I'm a dyed in the wool, card carrying Bowie fan. I cried true tears of grief that day. But i have the good sense to realise this comment was saying get a grip. I didn't know David Bowie but i sense he would have been irked by the mawkish global displays of grief projected by the media, and enjoyed a relieved chuckle at the above and often since contextually misquoted comment. Little wonder he kept his death a rightly private matter, so as to avoid the hype the above quoted comment is targeting. Think about it. Respectfully yours, Andrew

So I finally caught up with this video in mid-July, 2017, and here it is, over 18 months since David's passing, and as you spoke of Blackstar my eyes began to well up. David Bowie's death affected me deeply, much more than I anticipated early on. I could not get through a Bowie vid without shedding tears for two months and have probably shed tears over his death some 200+ times over this last year and a half. But in retrospect, seeing how much David affected me and my life, I really shouldn't have been surprised by the level of grief I fell into. David taught me to be fearless and just do what I thought was best for me, and not care what others thought of me. He made being in left field cool and even mainsream to some extent. And I think David taught the world to be a more tolerant and accepting place, on top of providing us with hours upon hours of wonderful music and thousands of hours of dynamic and spellbinding performances. I miss that man to this day and I ain't done mourning yet.
Thanks for your insightful opinions, the vast majority of which I agreed with, though I think you gave Earthling, hours... and Heathen the short shift. They're better than you are aware of, but that's okay. It took me 20 years to finally "get" Outside, which I had mixed feelings over initially, though I very much enjoyed some of the songs on it. But now, I love it as a whole. At least you got Buddha, Black Tie and Reality right; not many people have. I look forward to checking out the other two videos you did on David and I look forward to exploring your catelogue of other "guides to...."

Is it weird that I liked this video more than the 1947-1977 video? Sure, more of his masterpieces came out in that era, but this was a rare insight into the lesser era of his career. Even hearing about his dire songwriting state in the 1980's, it seemed he possessed this earnestness; this passionate desire to push music forward. And just hearing about him getting back to work with Black Tie White Noise and just working his way back up and up to Blackstar was frankly inspiring. Thanks so much for this video, Oliver.

I was heartbroken when I found out he died. But I didn't really give it much though until one day when I was already on my phone...I thought...I'm gonna find out why everybody loves David Bowie so much... one of the best thing I ever did. I liked him while I was growing up and I never really paid much attention to him. My parents told me that singers and famous people act like you don't exist and don't like you. That's right. Most of them don't. But Bowie was one of the very few who acted human and I loved that. I loved it so much it's ridiculous. He was so down to earth and real. But I regret the fact that I didn't know that much about him and didn't try to find out more about him when he was still alive. I did, but to no avail. It was the 90s and stuff. We didn't have the things that we do now. And plus I listened to my parents and kept myself very distant from him and other singers and musicians and stuff. It wasn't til last year that I cut all that out and did what I wanted to do. I ended up finding some remarkable stuff about the man out. Yes, he made some mistakes and stuff, but don't we all? I don't just love him as a musician...I love him as a person. I regret that fact that he's dead and I can't do anything about it. I wish I could but I can't. The man was very intuitive and creative. I think he was wonderful just being himself. I still keep my distance with most celebrities. I still would even if I were famous. He taught me a lot from a celebrity's point of view and a person's. We're all the same. Titles don't mean anything and we are unrealistic if we think they do.

This video somehow angelically appeared on my UA-cam feed, I am surprised I hadn't seen it sooner, and I just sat through both parts listening with rapt big eyes and ears and found wonderfully conversational with lots of good delicious things to stab my fork into. I've been working on a poem about Mr. Bowie, which started not long after his passing and which I am still shaping. I am quite pleased with its title and bits and pieces of the stanzas, but it has turned into a major project, which means I let it rest often. The ball started rolling when I at a very young age saw David appear on the Dinah Shore show...

Bowie is such a unique musician that my favorite album from him is actually Blackstar. It is perhaps one of the most sincere and touching records about death, not only lyrically but also in the music. There's something so sad, tired, dark, melancholic about this album. It's a heavy, heavy listen, not an album for everyday for sure, but it's certainly a masterpiece. What a way to go, a true artist, in the most profound sense.

I think David's last birthday was on a Thursday; I remember spending the previous day (Wed.?) planning what to write on his FB to wish him a Happy Bday on the 8th of January, 2016. I listed a couple of favorite tracks in the previous video, so here is where I add: "Breaking Glass", "Cracked Actor", "Loving The Alien", "John, I'm Only Dancing", "Moonage Daydream", & "Slow Burn". Love this part II guide to Bowie 💚
I was actually introduced to Bowie around the release of Never Let Me Down, which I really liked (especially "Time Will Crawl").
Tin Machine however came like a kick in the stomach and I was 100% onboard from then onwards.
The Sound+Vision Tour and the reissue of his back catalogue was a wonderful time to get into that amazing body of work too!
Personal favourite records: Station to Station, Lodger, Scary Monsters, Buddha of Suburbia, Outside.1, Heathen & Black Star. Okay I guess that is alot.....
Maybe it's easier to list the weakest ones? His debut, Tonight, Southside + Sorry (both from Tin Machine II and sung by Hunt Sales) & probably Hours are my personal low points

    Hey great channel DC.
Just wanted to say how strange is that album Low. Only song with a chorus Be My Wife........ And the best song on the disc has the vocals start half way thru the song (S&V). Last track no real words but how would you ever forget the vocals? It almost goes in through the skin rather than the ears.
    How good is every listen?
    Good stuff. Thanks heaps

There probably isn't much to do a video about really, 4 albums and an EP, all of which are fairly accessible. You could do a guide to Tool in a slightly longish comment

Loved the video and the main thing I wanted to know was your opinion of outside, it takes a few listens but I believe this is his best album (or joint best with low) I don't think it has any particular weak spots it's just maybe a bit long and overwhelming. To me it has such a unique and unsettling atmosphere kind of like a neon soaked futuristic nightmare, something kinda like blade runner but much darker and stranger. Also strangers when we meet is one of my fav Bowie songs

Bowie helped me to be a 'gay' person and accept my sexuality. One time so depressed went into a cd store back in those days when they sold, was looking for some cheap cd with nice music, my budget was low hahaha, and there it was playing in the store BowieOne. Instant love, bought it loved it, and discovering more of him I understood is ok to be different ! Thanks Bowie!

brilliant work in this guide! especially this second part, which I hadn't been able to find much info on so far...I was born in the 90s and am now realizing Bowie was all around me growing up without me noticing....maybe it's my age, but I obviously love his commercial 80s stuff....I also love his very early singles....I've had Space Oddity stuck in my head for two weeks now...I guess if you listen to the singles alone - which is my persobal route to quick discovery - I can find something enjoyable from every single era.....but that's the beauty of Best Of albums right? you only get the very best work

For better or worse, Earthling was my first David Bowie album, and it prompted me to go investigate him more. At a time in the 90s when a lot of rock groups and stars were "going techno" (see: U2's POP), it never felt insincere to me, or that the songs were "franken-songs" that didn't work because the rock and dnb were slapped together.

I don't know if someone else has mentioned it by now, since this came out in 2017, but the Pablo Picaso song was a cover of a Modern Lovers song (although I have to say I didn't actually realize it was on the album b/c I didn't give that album enough of a chance). I even saw him on that tour. Just to be clear, I don't mean at all to be panning this review by mentioning this - this was a really good spin through these records. And actually, I think you're one of the best reviewers/analyzers of music I've found on you tube. But I just wanted to throw this detail out to you so that you could edit the video. Great work on this review (and the prior one also) thank you so much for going through there. I have to go back and listen to his last album, I had a hard time hearing it at the time because of his death and so I need to give it another chance.

Pablo Picasso is a song BY the Modern Lovers (Jonathan Richmond and the Modern lovers) written by Richmond and Gerry Harrison who went on to join Talking heads, the modern movers album was recorded in 1971 and produced by the velvet underground John Cale and not released until 1976 or 7 ,it was considered.a cult classic and the song Roadrunner was later covered by the Sex Pistols on the great rock n.roll swindle soundtrack

Thanks a lot Janine! Right now my go-to headphones are the Sennheiser HD280-pro. Not particularly expensive but they have a very neutral sound, and they open up a LOT once they've been broken in. And yeah, those deep cuts searches can be particularly dodgy huh :/

Outside is my favourite of this period, but not as far as rock goes. At the same time, Scott Walker produced Tilt which Bowie said was what he was trying for with Outside.
...and the "Reznor" album was Outside, not Earthling. Just check out the studio (and live) version of Hallo Spaceboy.

One of the tracks on Let's Dance, China Girl is a cover of an Iggy Pop song that appeared on his 1977 masterpiece The Idiot. Iggy was in need of money so Bowie covered it so Iggy would get royalties. It's neat because Iggy Pop recorded his two masterpiece solo albums The Idiot and Lust For Life the same time as Bowie recorded his Berlin trilogy. They were living together while doing so and Bowie produced The Idiot. Another point on Let's Dance is the track Cat People (Putting Out Fire) which Bowie had made for the Paul Schrader's remake of the 1942 film Cat People. The song was also used in the preparation scene for burning down the theatre in Quentin Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds

I think Earthling is one of Bowies largest accomplishments in making jungle sounds accessible to a wide auidence. No person on the planet could make it and sell it stright.

  • @johnkuehne6454
    @johnkuehne6454 4 роки тому

I totally agree with your thoughts on Earthling - the Reznor influence really throws it off. It's not bad, it just feels just alien coming from Bowie. A failed experiment. I never really pull it out.

  • @qatsidan

To me the real album combinations are Low/"Heroes" followed by Lodger/Scary Monsters. Lodger feels very much like Bowie's take on a Before and After Science sort of album where you can tell that the tracks all come from the same time with similar energy but there isn't much else connecting the tracks. Which is fine. I think Lodger gets a lot of unfair dismissal because it gets lumped in with two really phenomenal albums and it's just...it's fine. It's like Dark Knight Rises after The Dark Knight. It's fine but it's standing right next to a stone cold masterpiece (while kind of signaling that things are going to get more sloppy soon). To answer your question, my favorites are Diamond Dogs through "Heroes," Buddha Of Suburbia, Outside, The Next Day, and Blackstar - though it is impossible to get through without actual sobbing even 4 years after Bowie left us.
