With all that it also is special because Elvis insisted he was going to sing that song and overcame higher powers that wanted him to sing something otherwise. I saw him at Norfolk Scope in 1975, on July 20, and may I say he was AMAZING! I won $20 from a high school friend that bet me he would not sell out before Jethro Tull. Elvis sold out in a couple hours and added another night concert and that sold out as well. Tull never did sell out. If only I would have betted more but then again I did not even have the 20$. Glad I won the bet. Thanks for your love for Elvis! Love you both!

Hey S&M I just thought that I would let you know that I saw Elvis Presly twice in concert in Oklahoma City the year was 73 and 75 and yes he is the GOAT because believe me seeing him live changed my life forever. Also thank you for keeping his memory alive God Bless.
This is the legendary live performance that was intended for the close of the special. This was the only time the song was performed in front of an audience. Despite how amazing this performance was, Elvis was not satisfied with it and came back later to perform the song live in the studio without an audience and while wearing the famed white suit, the version you've already reacted to that actually appeared on the show...then he never performed the song again. As a result, this live version remained unreleased for many years. It is a testament to how much Elvis wanted this song to have an impact on the viewers of the TV special to know that he left this performance "in the can" as they say.

What's so amazing is the song was written by a man who had never wrote a song before in his life. It was a last minute addition to the 68 special. Colonel Parker wanted it to end with a Christmas song. Elvis had other plans.
Elvis closed the '68 special with If I Can Dream wearing a white suit. This version is Elvis wearing black leather. He recorded a couple of versions for this special. If you listen carefully both versions are slightly different. In my opinion the greatest message song of all time. I like your reaction and the excitement this song and performance generates. Yes this is the only time he did this song in front of a live audience, and the original sound is so good. He then decided he wanted to do it on the production stage that he opened the Special with.
