- Metallica is an American heavy metal band. The band was formed in 1981 in Los Angeles by vocalist/guitarist James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich, and has been based in San Francisco for most of its career. The band's fast tempos, instrumentals and aggressive musicianship made them one of the founding "big four" bands of thrash metal, alongside Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer. Metallica's current line-up comprises founding members and primary songwriters Hetfield and Ulrich, long-time lead guitarist Kirk Hammett, and bassist Robert Trujillo. Guitarist Dave Mustaine (who went on to form Megadeth after being fired from the band) and bassists Ron McGovney, Cliff Burton (who died in a bus accident in Sweden in 1986) and Jason Newsted are former members of the band.

And giving up practicing
And he said who cares🤣🤣
Fun fact - James designed the Metallica logo himself with a ruler and a t-square, and he has publicly thanked his high school drafting teacher!

That is awesome! I would have loved to see them in the early days.. but I was way too young
Hate Lars or love him. Lars is a musical genius. Metallica is alive because of Lars
Totally agree!
JD Garcia your comment about a musical genius insults me. Entertaining to watch this band reach respected roles and grown into what you probably listen to and what I laugh off to dad rock. Just like any major business corporation.
bro Lars makes mistakes even on record :D:D always dragging behind

@@jd.garcia7555 I know there's no metallica without Lars, but still it annoys me, even in the recordings he drags, then decides to speed up. Not obvious big mistakes, but kills the flow of the magic riffs ontop.
I play in a band aswell and know about mistakes. I also know guys who played better than him on their first sitting on the kit :D
But I love Lars of course, hes the heart of the band.
RIP Cliff. The dude was a very unique one of a kind person. I can't help but think metal would have gone a different direction if Cliff were still with us.
Cliff was just.. the best. I can’t even tell. We will never find someone as best as Cliff… I miss him so much..
it would’ve happened sooner. people finally came to their senses around the early to mid 2000s and started learning a bunch of his stuff and started making it their own and now you have a whole bunch of variations of what cliff could do.
I love how the formation of arguably the biggest metal band in the world started by Lars conning his way into forming a band.
If he would have never gotten the song on that first record where would they be today 🤔
Shows what one mans passion can achieve. “It’s more challenging and more fun” he said
Actually all because he got caught smoking weed and could no longer pursue that while in us lololol moral of the story smoke weed guys 😂😂😂 good things happen
Cliff was a genius... I'm glad you hear James admit how important he was to his musical development... Cliff introduced melody and music theory to the rest of the band who had no idea about that kind of stuff... He was integral in the band's growth...Cliff was known to be a HUGE Thin Lizzy fan,and brought very big changes to the way they wrote songs... God bless Cliff Burton... He is so missed, and will forever be remembered as the genius musician he was... Cliff 'em all!!!
I don’t agree with everything Mustaine has said over the years; but damn. The dude said fuck this and created an equally awesome, maybe even better thrash band IMO. You got to admit, that’s metal as fuck.

An album that will tear you apart
I really appreciate this bio documentary. In 37 minutes, you have captured the essence of the material most important of the band. Good job.
Even after all these years it still hurts the soul to know cliff went out the way he did.. that quote he stated about burning out from being slow and bored, just says so much of how sure he was of himself.. he’s like that big brother you cherished as a young teen, who always had his mind made up and was always hands on to what ever he was doing. Man was one of them special dudes… in a recent interview.. the way his ex girlfriend from the 80s speaks of him so highly and gentle even after so many years is very soothing… real misfit rockstar 🖤
Does anyone here still get choked up about Cliff, everytime I hear how he died he chokes me up and i begin to tear up! RIP CLIFF
you’re not alone
Wish we could be in that alternate reality where he's been making music all this time. Or having him here too would be more than fine too. Yeah I don't connect with the band so much the further away from his passing you get. I did like some of the newer stuff ("Cyanide'' had a wicked epic opening riff, should've used it more in the arrangement though) they've done since they've started getting back to their true roots. Hopefully they stay that way and get even better again. Time will tell.
Kirk Hammett and exodus were one of my very favorite bands and when he joined Metallica I was ecstatic

I mean, it's easy to hate James, but at the same time I feel for him.
Born in a family that locked him out of activities, health, and probably friends. Mother died when he was 16 for beliefs and his father left. His brother was his only family before Metallica. You can guess why he built up such an ego.
Not to mention anger issues that he lashed out on Mustaine, which also was completely crazy when drunk, and Dave's dog too, on that one incident, back in the days.
And poor Jason took it all from an emotionally stunted man who really never grew up and was scarred after he lost to an horrible accident his foster big brother Cliff.
It's sad, really.
His mom died when he was 4

I think the difference with James and Dave was Dave tended to be more of angry drunk. Dave has an ego too,I’m pretty sure. It’s all good though, megadeath was born out of it.

Mr. Cliff Lee Burton Rest In Peace 🎸😭🙏
I started listening to metal music for the very first time with Metallica in the year of '96 when I was 11, since those days I still consider myself as a huge Metallica fan ✌️💯👊
On their first show, James was strictly vocals. It was their second show where he actually played rhythm guitar, with the M.U.Y.A Flying V that later sold for $1,500,000. Papa wasn’t always the down-picking riff lord we all know and love today.
Yes, that’s what I noticed too. Some other things said are wrong here
I heard James say in an interview, about what guitars he uses and he specifically mentioned his "original V" was on every, single, album. When did he sell it?
i wish you'd covered the moscow concert, to my opinion its a tremndous landmark in thier history, a very very intersting landmark
1989 Seattle is better
Seattle didn't have a million fans at that concert. Moscow was epic.

cliff was such an amazing soul, truly inspirational, one of the main reasons i didn’t give up on bass. rest in peace, you are loved and missed 💕💕
The Black Album is sort of like James' autobiography in many ways, and very relatable to other 70s and 80s kids who were repressed/sheltered for religious reasons. Usually that type of over-parenting backfires in very dramatic and sometimes fatal ways. The world got an angry young James Hetfield who happened to become one of the best guitarists in metal. One thing his mom did right was sign him up for those piano lessons!
Check your facts. One thing his mom did right a year before she died was buy him his first guitar from a school friend for $200.
An awesome band. I grew up listening to these guys. Respect to James for fighting not only the band but most importantly his family.
been waiting for this, but it’s finally announced! I can’t await the premiere!

This is my fourth time watching this bio . You really did em justice and made it entertaining enough to re-re-watch 🤘
I love how metallica has a life out of music, and their not totally destroyed. People don't understand the loss they've been through.
The 1st time I heard a Metallica tune was spring '86 Dallas TX in my high school parking lot. A kid was playing a tape with "Seek & Destroy" blasting! Went out straight away and bought the newly dropped "Masters of Puppets" tape. . . been a huge fan ever since!! 🤘🤘
It's easy to pick holes in this chopped up footage documentary, but this filled a few blanks for me and I learnt a more. Thank you for making the video. Metallica are awesome. I'm knocking 50 and I still love them, always have, always will.
31:04 ah, I see what you did there.
im 15 and have been listening to metallica all my life, i only recently got into their backstory's. on their recent concert james stated that he was feeling too old for rock, i was devastated and want to go see them live so badly but i dont know if i will ever get that chance.
I don't care what people say about lars it wouldn't be metallica without him and he's a driving force greatest band ever
The recent bases they've had have been okay but nobody will ever beat Cliff Burton. You're the man cliff
I agree with you
Bases??? Really???
I grew up listening and playing Metallica most of my 41 years so far, a very huge fan. I know there all getting up there in age and i just have to say it's going to be a very sad day when James, kirk or lars pass! It would then be the end for Metallica. I'm more of a fan of the older stuff of course, and I'm just so grateful that they created the music they did.. with cliff, Dave, and Jason! they'll never really die in my life.
Really cool... thanks for uploading, man,
I would never have started playing guitar 30 years ago if it wasn't for Metallica. They lost me for a bit... or I lost them. So glad they got their groove back on with Trujillo... I think the band is as good now as ever it was. @Through the Never' is a full-on psychedelic Thrash horror experience... what a fucking cool gig, amazing show all stitched together.
You stay healthy out there - Big love to the Metal Militia, hardcore brothers and sisters
I just had to come back and say thanks, this video autoplayed without me noticing but I couldn’t switch it off. I hadn’t listened to them in years and the past few days have been a nice nostalgic jam after work. 🤘🏼
Great ending: Nothing Else Matters but Music!
In one of the interviews Jason actually named the real reason why he had to leave the band. It was all about priorities: music or family life.
And Dave is still resentful about the way he got kicked out of the group. After so many years. Got it practically firsthand.
Check your facts. If you watch this interview, Jason did not leave because of priorities: music or family life. Jason left due to lack of appreciation from the band and management and when James did not accept him helping a start up band Echobrain on the side, that sealed his decision.
ua-cam.com/video/ynAFtQhPSKc/v-deo.html
@@firstnamelastname5899 Jason actually named plenty of reasons, but I do believe that the lack of appreciation was the main one.

great documentary, i've seen many Metallica docs before but this has a lot of interesting new stuff and perspectives.
This documentary is awesome
They played their first concert on my birthday, March 14. My first name is Scott. Dave's middle name is Scott. Cliff had a brother named Scott and his mom's name is the same as my mom's name. Cliff grew up just 10 minutes from where I lived in Alameda County. There are probably more "coincidences". My Metallicliff tattoo and I thank you for this doc.
scott ian from anthrax??? lol
Man I love your documentaries! i listen to them many times. The titles you use are so epic and a nice nod to the band's songs.
i was 14 and into classic rock at the time, for whatever reason i found kill em all recommended to me on UA-cam. hearing hit the lights, i was hooked instantly. 6 years later and it's still my favourite album of all time, im so happy just by chance that i listened to that album as an introduction to metallica
Incredible work by you putting the awesome piece of work out there. As a Metallica fan since kill em all thanks bro! 👊🏽
I was listening to Ratt, Crue, Maiden, Judas Priest, etc and then I heard Am I Evil and my life changed. Once I heard that song it completely changed what I listened to, how I dressed, my entire life. I became a MetalHead instantly and still am today. What I didn't see coming back then was how big Metallica would eventually become, the first time I saw them was shortly after Cliff passed, there was probably 6k people for the Damage Inc tour. The next time they came on their own was in support of the Justice album an they sold out two shows in a NBA arena. Seattle 89, still my favorite concert ever because of how crazy the crowd was.
The last time Metallica came to Seattle was in 2017 and they filled a NFL stadium, literally filled the place. It's unreal to me how big they've become, back in the mid 80's I felt like they were my own because hardly anyone was listening to them where I was. Now Enter Sandman is played in grocery stores and is used as the intro for the Tennessee football team. Maybe it's not Tennessee? Some big college football team plays Sandman as the team comes on the field, it's pretty cool.
Metallica is like an old friend now, I love them.
I'm glad they booted Dave cause I love what he's created too.
Great documentary man, well put together... heard a couple of things I hadn't previously! 🤘Steve

Dave Mustaine: “I was homeless. I was panhandling…”
Narrator: “James and Lars took one look at Dave’s expensive equipment and gave him the job immediately.” 🤔
I was lucky enough to have seen Metallica as the second act to take the stage at "MONSTERS OF ROCK" Pontiac Silverdome Pontiac Michigan after the opening act Kingdom Come and proceeded by Dokken. When Metallica took stage lower bowl emptied to main floor. I will never forget that.
I caught that too. Where does a panhandling homeless guitar player keep all of his expensive equipment? Don't get me wrong, I love Dave, Megadeth, and Metallica. I would love to hear the music that was never created if Dave would have remained in the band.
Dave tells a different story: they hired him after warming up on his guitar.
Which makes sense since none dares to say that DM isnt one of the best.

Excellent documentary. I hate getting into who’s better blah blah, all I know is that Metallica helped shaped thrash metal and I’m just grateful for that. I’ve been a fan since I heard them the first time. Their music helped me get through some shit early on and even as an adult, their lyrics essentially portrayed how I felt but wasn’t sure how to express it in a safe way. Thanks Metallica.

Absolutely love Metallica man oh man was that show wild aftershock was also my first festival and all of my friends and it was my girlfriend first concert experience ever. .. safe to say they nailed it
