Ring Alarm Z Wave Smart Lock Integration - Ring 2019 Upcoming Updates

  • Ring recently announced that they now have integration with Z wave smart locks from different major manufacturers like Yale, Schlage and Kwikset. I'll link below the compatibility page where Ring will continue to update when more models and other brands that have smart z wave technology will be compatible. Please note that you need to have the Ring Alarm at this time to be able to control your z wave compatible locks.
    So, for now, you will need the Ring alarm, specifically the base station which is the one responsible and acts as a hub to control the locks and also the alarm sensors using z wave technology. Also, for now, accessing the door lock in the app is a bit of a hassle because it is buried deep in the app...which I'll show you later on.

    I bought the Yale Z-Wave smart lock on Ring's site ($220), but saw this video pointing out Ring's Z-Wave compatibility page. I ended up purchasing a lower cost Yale Z-Wave model as a result. Thank you - you saved me over $100 with this video.

    Another great review. Unfortunately I won't be using this feature until someone comes out with a smart lock that covers the turn knob lock and the deadbolt lock. I agree with 24/7 recording using too much bandwidth but if it's used on 1 or 2 critical coverage camera's, it could be worth it.

    • @LifeHackster
      @LifeHackster  5 років тому +2

      A lot of what I've seen are only deadbolts. It would be nice if there is one that can do both. Also, for it to know if the door is actually closed or open instead of just locked and unlocked. It can be locked but the door is actually open. As to 24/7 recording, you be better off with an NVR system or a PoE system that records in your home network and doesn't rely on the internet.

    Thanks for this! Your videos are so informative. I went all in on the ring alarm system with cameras as well in large part because of your videos. I think the ring system overall is pretty good and by far the most Bang for buck in terms of the monthly subscription costs which is huge over the long run. I’m so glad that they are developing the z-wave integration more so that you can truly be a hub. I was betting on them doing this as I add more devices over time to make my home smarter. Finally glad that locks are integrated, even if it’s clunky right now.

    Lifehackster, I have a specific scenario in mind for the ring alarm with 2zwave locks. With the ring alarm, can I set up the alarm to unlock one specific door when the system is disarmed by a specific user? I want zwave locks on my front door and garage entry door, but I want the ring alarm to automatically unlock the garage entry door when I disarm the alarm, but not family, friends, or guests. Is that granularity of control available with ring alarm’s zwave lock integration?

    I've had Ring ever since it started and grew right along with it. I've recently discovered the more Ring devices you have integrated in your alarm system, cams, motion/door/window sensors, the more bandwidth you use. So, if your internet is performing slower than usual, do keep that in mind while streaming. I turn off the unnecessary devices during movie nights.
    Also, there are differences between the smart locks and what they work with and it is confusing. I bought the Connect deadbolt and I had to buy another device in order for it to work with Ring, pain in the butt and costly. Regretting all purchases at this point.
    One more thing, if your electricity goes out, you have to reconnect every time, another pain in the butt cuz we have PG&E and they seem to cut us off whenever the wind blows!

    Do you have any experience with Alfred Z-Wave integration with the Ring System? Is there any real benefit to buying a Z-Wave lock at all at this time if they are burying the lock controls deep within the Ring App? The only benefit I can see is being able to simply lock the door on the keypad when you leave and have the door lock and the Alarm system arm with one step but I don't think this is possible yet is it? This video is 3 years old and still no real integration with the Ring Alarm and Locks? If not I ill choose the Wi-Fi version for less $ since both can be integrted ith Alexa/Google anyway and the lock companies' app is most likely simpler to get to. Thanks for the great videos

    Whereas if one has a window/door sensor installed with their Ring security system and one of this sensors were to be tripped (while armed), Ring notifies you of the alarm and which sensor created the alarm. However, if one integrated a deadbolt, z-wave lock into their Ring security, armed the system and the deadbolt lock was breached, Ring would not send an alarm; it would only advise that the deadbolt was opened. Not a secure system. Has Ring fixed this issue?

    Great video I don’t know if you know this but Amazon now owns all of Ring . I found this our because I am having to replace my Lowe’s iris’s home Alarm Iris will be closing March 31-2019 . I have been reading about a new door lock to add to my Ring alarm system I called ring to ask about the kwikset 916 zwave I was told it will work on the Ring system and that when unlocking the dead bolt it will turn off your ring home Alarm and you will be able to use Alex to lock and unlock with a pin to (unlock only) it’s starting to make sense now that Amazon own Ring that it will Be Alexa friendly . But from what I am understand you will have to have a echo that has a hub like the echo show or you can get the 3 gen echo spot see when i order my ring home Alarm system Amazon gave me the echo for free but I did some more research and found out that the Ring door bell 2 has a hub in it . I went back a week later to order one more door sensors . The new Ring home Alarm set up now adds the 2nd gen ring door bell. The 3 gen echo is on back order I have had the Alarm for 3 weeks now and the echo will not be here till March 5 2019 . So after watching you video it all came together for me . I have the Schlage Connect Z-Wave Deadbolt with built-in alarm model BE469 that is listed as compatible on Ring.com, but they're saying I have to have the alarm to make it talk to my Ring Doorbell Pro. Why can't I just connect it using Z-Wave thru my Samsung Smartthings? This makes no sense. Apparently, it's coming soon, but when?

    • @LifeHackster
      @LifeHackster  5 років тому

      I connected mine without any configuration to my Ring doorbell (which wasn't connected at time of install). Just go with the setup and see if it connects.

      LifeHackster Maybe I'm confused. I want to be able to unlock my door straight from inside the ring app. After speaking with a Ring rep, my understanding is that function isn't available at the moment unless I have a Ring alarm installed. There is no option for locks under "set up a device" in my Ring app. Can you clarify?

      @@mxpxboy77 - Oh.. I got you..Yes, you need the Ring alarm... The alarm base uses z wave that is why you can connect other devices to it.

      So I did see a video where some one was able to add a GE door sensor by clicking pair Manually and it was able to connect but didn’t set off the alarm if triggered. Hope ring adds that feature soon.
