Nothing was worth stalling my ascension through the ranks of the ventrue clan. I would do anything as I have done before to rise to the elite and stand atop the world. But now, nothing but awe and love? fills my soul as I watch this tableau of misery and shame before me. To act now, to break this picture of tragedy, would be an insult to all that must be upheld. She looks at me with those mournful eyes of the purest red, "So they sent you." I could not answer as I looked at her, ashamed of my cold indifference to end whoever took our assets. "Well, no matter now. It wouldn't mean much to a ventrue, but they were worth more to me than your clan's quotes." As she lays the body of the once-promising postmodern artist on the bloodied carpet next to the last masterpiece she would ever create. I had thought of ingratiating myself to my sire, one of the clan's Methuselah, who had invested in a museum exhibition in this kine. But now, it all seems meaningless and arbitrary. As the toreador stands with hard rage filling her crimson eyes, "She was supposed to be mine, be mine before you bastards took her from me. But I won't let you have either of us!". Realization dawns on me too late as before I can act, she grabs a broken, jagged chair leg and stabs it into her heart as I guard myself, preparing for the ensuing fight. As her flesh crackles and burns to ashes before me, anger and confusion muddled my already turbulent mind. I had come to reclaim an asset, but instead, let her killer free herself from Ventrue justice. Letting the regret and lamenting my failure. So, I do what I must, "the tragic artist lost in an accidental house fire" sounding better than "love-crazed vampire murder-suicide." That is all I can do...for either of them now. As I look upon the young girl on the dyed red, virgin white carpet. Her eyes closed as though asleep in solemn peace. I wiped the blood-soaked brown hair from her face, and I looked upon her in what was once a solid blue dress except for the red that spilled from her open throat. I pick up the blood-stained masterpiece of the once great up-and-coming flower of the art world taken too soon to bloom. "All that is left of either of them is this," I say to the empty room as I stare at a portrait of a beautiful woman with yellow hair, soft red eyes, and a crimson streak of the artist's red defiling the canvas. As the room starts to fill with gray and is bathed in colors of orange and yellow, engulfing the room with their bright hues. I leave with the portrait with a slight smile; they say that the artwork's value rises significantly after the artist dies.
