Amazing professionalism, immediately used momentum and traded airspeed for altitude, and then pushed for best glide. You guys are awesome.
Gangster move for sure. Awesome stuff!
When you dread nought power you are prepared...
That’s what the pilots at Reno are instructed/trained to do with any sign of emergency as standard protocol. Not to take anything away from this pilot; he did a great job.
standard procedure
@@SoloRenegade i know it is, but reacting instantly and correctly is not as usual. Even if you train for it, when it happens, it’s still a complete shocking surprise. It is great to see that training and standard procedures paid great dividends.
That is the most unique sound ive ever heard.... Great catch ...
That sounded expensive 😢
Glad the pilot was able to get back on the ground 🙌🏼
where else is he going to go ??
Glad he made it, cept he really had no other choice. If its so safe tho , why all the videos? Like every day
@@garygregory350pumping the UA-cam algorithm
LMAO, soon of later, the pilot will get to the ground in a way or another right?@@curtbilyeu8701
Plenty of energy to do what had to be done.
Great flying by Joel, who is a fantastic pilot. I had the pleasure of flying in the PoF P-51 "Wee Willy" with him a decade ago and even then he was experienced beyond his years. Great job!
Nice video. Glad the pilot made it down safely. Juan, I noticed one thing he did that I hear you talk about - Aviate first. I saw immediately he tried to get as much altitude as he could, and then he navigated back to the field, and communicated before ARFF was on the way.
Aviate, Navigate, Communicate.
@@my-yt-inputs2580 My old flight instructer used to say Aviate, Navigate, Communiicate, Administrate, Remonstrate, Litigate, Liquidate!!
My old flight instructor used to say ………”PULL UP! PULL UP! PULL UP !!!! Aaaaaaaahhhhhhhh” !
crazy footage and sound
At 7 seconds, just before the bird, something is visible above the small cloud for a couple of frames. Something came off the engine.
nothing came off the engine. diagnostics pending, hypothesis its a master rod
Sounds like it’s running on half the cylinders. Impressively prompt reaction, trading some excess speed for altitude.
Yeah. Bits of pylon debris got sucked into the air intake, maybe?
@@pseudotasuki There was also a video from the day before where they apparently did a ground run with a new oil cooler, and it also looked like there were also birds in the area when the engine blew. I’m sure they will announce what happened…
Wasn't a compressor sound.
I'd sure like to see the tear-down on that engine. If air racers are like all other racers (I am in that other category) I doubt we will ever know what happened...it sure sounded different...amazing footage, Juan.
with air racing ending, what's to hide anymore?
Air racing is not ending 😂
@@jrgogol where are the unlimited racers going to race?
I’m using this video to send to my students. Perfect example of pitching for best glide. Most times that means pitching up and gaining altitude. If you’re flying a piston single, you should always be prepared for this. Thanks for sharing the vid, Juan.
** I agree, IF you have excess speed to gain altitude.. If anywhere in pattern, PUSH for best glide - have that speed memorized as more times than not, on Base/Final - smaller single engines will be slower than best glide....
Considering his speed and the location of the person filming this, I'd say that was one lucky catch.
not really
Sounds like 14 cylinders quit working. Good thing he's got twice that.
Altitude is your friend when things go sideways.
Word is that Dreadnought is done for this year...oil is full of metal shavings!
You gotta love those old radial engines.
Very lucky nothing fell out of engine onto those below.
Awesome catch by both pilot and cameraman!
That sounds expensive.
I remember watching Steve Hinton, cross the finish line in the Red Baron, back in 1979. I remember hearing the engine let go and seeing smoke come from the exhaust. Unfortunately, the mechanical failure caused that big prop to go flat, and he didn't make the runway. His post-crash injuries were pretty severe. Glad he recovered and went on to achieve a distinguished career in War Bird aviation.
@RepentandbelieveinJesusChristbugger off
@RepentandbelieveinJesusChristwhat is up with these comments on every comment?
@RepentandbelieveinJesusChristnot even close to every comment. What do you care?
Wasn’t he a ww2 vet?
I was there as well! I remember everyone giving a minute of silence for Steve, as a 17 year old I was crushed as he was my favorite racer! All that night I kept saying to my dad “ maybe he made it out” the next day I was thrilled to hear Steve survived! Several years ago as I was flying a Turbo Otter to Victoria a mosquito bomber flew over me in the opposite direction, flown by Steve Hinton! These pilots are exceptional, and to keep your cool and fly your plane till it stops is why these guys are still here today!
Always convert speed into altitude !!
Did I see debris depart the aircraft, just as it passes the camera?
It’s a bird. Slow the video down and you’ll see it.
No, but when they said they found metal in the screens, one of the pylon judges joked, "screens? We found metal in the desert!"
Just before the bird, something is visible above the small cloud for a couple of frames. Something came off the engine.
I think you're right. Probably something from the cowl don't know what let go but its possible part of the engine disintegrates.
@@Spike-by3cy Good catch
Wow, that sounded cinematic!
I watched this aircraft being built/modified back in the mid-'80s when I was supplying and maintaining parachutes for the Sanders' aircraft. The engine is a P&W R-4360, somewhat modified. It came from a C-124, and there were three "spares" from the same aircraft on pallets in a corner of the hangar at Chino. Sad to see this happen, on it's very last Reno race.
The yard that had all those melted the rest down not long after the Sanders and Lloyd Hamilton recovered theirs. McChord AFB acquired a C-124 for their museum a couple of years later and there was none when they went for engines. They borrowed engines from Travis’ museum to fairy it from Selfridge to Tacoma.

Wow, what a vantage point!
This is the best one for sound!! Good job
That sound does ring a bell in my memory, just cant place it. The hay cutting wheel in the stable feed room.
High speed at a low altitude is a thing of beauty. Like money in the bank. So glad this ended okay.
No.
Speed is a buffer in your checking account.
Altitude is like savings in the bank.
You will blow through airspeed very quickly. This is one of the reasons why low flight is dangerous.
@@Bartonovich52 low flight is only dangerous when done by someone not correctly trained for it.
Nice Ukraine flag.
Sincerely -
Help me understand the dynamics at play. Cost - Benefit Analysis.
@@Bartonovich52You completely misunderstood his comment. He’s saying it’s as sweet as money in the bank, not that it’s money in the bank for safety…..
In Australia I buzzed a friends private strip for a party on his cattle farm in my Citation Mustang @ 250ft just under VMO of 250kt and one engine stalled so I simply pulled back for an ROC of 4,000fpm until I reached 4,000ft then did a return single engine landing without any issues at all. The power of a jet in a small airframe with great handling even on a single engine must never be underestimated. I wouldn't be so keen to run one of those old single piston bangers because that pilot HAD to immediately gain altitude running off his high airspeed alone then glide land. I'm sure I could do it as well but would need to change my undergarments prior to the de briefing. LOL
Oh man?!? My neighbors and their best friends are attending. I just told her to be aware of where the planes are. May this be the only incident!
What a sound, incredibly dynamic in tone as it goes away
SOUNDED GOOOOOOODDDD
14-second video. I think I need a debrief video with this one.
Whoa, spectacular but quite scary, safe landing - blue skies for another day.
Agree, with comments on the debri and wonder the same.
Thanks
I think that was a bird in the frame. Very beginning of the video, you can see a couple birds flying around, then they come into frame again as the place flies over the camera person…, at least that is what I think I saw when I reviewed the video at slowed rate.
yep.
That sure sounded weird...
Thought my speaker went out from cranking it up.
Ouch, that sounds like it was REALLY EXPENSIVE.
Wow… all the feels!
Juan are you going to comment on that Ural Airlines A320 crash landing in a wheat field in Russia? Kind of an amazing story that has gotten surprisingly little notice by the mainstream media.
Holly Crap!
Roger is the man! Great capture~
That sounded so cool. Obviously not for the pilot but seemed to handle it like it was just another Monday.
We do what we love to do. Dangerous as it may be, we are still happy as it brings joy to you and me.
Expensive!
Dreadnaught has been around since my first Reno air race in 86 …
I was a drag racer and had no concept… yikes impressive and that’s 35+ years ago
Glad that the pilot and the rest of the Sea Fury are fine...
That sounded quite expensive!
Get some altitude quick with the momentum you have. Climb, setup to land.
That sounded expensive!
Dang he was on the deck!!!!
Hope they have a spare engine on the hauler; be a shame not to be able to race at the final Reno Air Race!
I wish that was the worst news to come out of the air races this year.
Hello from Cameron park Juan! Little update on the Birdcage, next year for the cops and rodders fly in (we’ll it’s more of a car show now) we should have it on 3 wheels and over here partly on display!
Edit: no I’m not chuck I’m his son
"I hope he brought a spare cylinder.."
What the hell was that repetitive sound after the engine blew overhead!? Did the entire engine explode? Sounds like 6-7 cylinders exploded. Not a pilot or aircraft mechanic but damn!
Glide for Life …. step right up and push this envelope through this keyhole of Fun/Despair.
So apparently you can let the magic smoke out of these too! That is an expensive noise its making. This is a normal day at the office for these races. I thought you might have the clip of it being towed on the ramp with oil coming out of everwhere like it usually does.
DAMN!!
Thank you - good dead stick
Instantly traded speed for altitude.
Well that was exciting!
Wow!!
The sound reminds me of a spaceship from star wars
Pod racer.
Hi there was a learjet crash in mumbai in rainy weather today at around noon utc. Could you look at it? Thanks ..
If you ever wondered what $10k per second sounds like....
The original Bristol Centaurus units were known to fail like this on Sea Furys too!
Looks like something come off the airplane was that a camera glitch?
So did they pop the heads off of a couple jugs??
Sounds like nothing I've heard before.
that sounds e x p e n s i v e
Sad she won't get to race!
Hey Juan have you heard of the Medore family ? they do AT-6 parts and restoration they go to Oshkosh every year
They’re all super talented their dad Art Sr. Was a ww2 p-51 fighter pilot he wrote a book about flying them
I was lucky to have my first flight by him in a L-19 bird dog back in the 80’s
Interesting sound, almost like running an engine with a plug out.
Anybody notice the $100 bills trailing behind that plane? Must of been at least a hundred!
How much altitude can you gain from 440mph?
Holy crap if that don’t put a tickle in your britches.
Thanks for the credit Juan!
Thanks for the quick filming in Landscape View Roger!! That's tough at 440 mph!
Sounds like half the cylinders stopped workong.
Looks like something came off the plane as it flew overhead, thank God he got back safe
Sounded like a Speeder from StarWars!
Shoot, had my speed at 1.5X...totally a Speeder.
Heartbroken
Will Dreadnaught be racing?
Not now...
Hmmm.... That don't sound quite right.
@blancolirio are you in Reno?
@0:07 There is something that appears to come off the aircraft but I can't make it out. Stepping through frame by frame, it almost looks like an aircraft way way off but again, can't make it out.
Airspeed for altitude.
WOW!!! I thought there was something wrong with my speakers....awesome.
That sounded odd!
That does NOT sound good.
Something is in the air in front of him just before the pylon. Go to 0:07 in the video and use the "," and "." keys (lower case "") to advance or retreat one frame (at 30 frames / second, that's 0.03333 seconds per frame). If you advance six frames, the nose should is about to leave the top of the frame. For the next six frames something appears to be falling. I wondered if it was a cylinder but 1) it's in front of him and 2) there wasn't a large hole in the cowling. Is it a bird? FWIW, smoke appears about ten frames or so before the 0:07 mark.
Oh no not the Buick….at least its only Monday….
Can they fix it by Sunday? Hate to see the last race not have any gold class airplanes.
Bardahl and Miss America still in it.. Dreadnought is done.
He made it????
Just rumor, but comments about another video from someone there, listening in at their pit, overhead crew discussing a broken master rod. Makes sense, but who knows yet. That’s what ended Super Corsair, but she had a big oil fire and the pilot, Kevin Eldridge was directed by his folks on the ground to bail out.
Is this the last year for Reno races? I thought I heard they were getting shut down.
No, moving on to Vegas
Did you see that Russian fighter jet totally upside down about a hundred feet from the ground? He flipped right side up and hit some rocks and blew up
What was the outcome?
Able to get back on the ground safely
😮 that's bad.
That sounds extremely expensive
Oops! 🥶
Wow that sound.
Have you seen the Ural Airlines flt 1383 emergency landing?? Why would they fly an hour away from their destination to land in a field?!?
Sounds like they were Russian around lol
to make sure not a drop of fuel was in it when it landed
@@flynlr that’s gonna make it hard to take off again
