Awesome interview, Dan. That was some excellent piloting when that engine went. Instantly traded airspeed for altitude. Great job on getting that airplane back on the ground safely. Thank you for this interview. Keep up the excellent work. Safe skies my friend 🇺🇸🛩️

He did a masterful job of managing that complete power loss to a perfect landing. Dreadnaught is bad to the bone.

Correct spelling is "Dreadnought". It's an O not an A =P (Don't look at my username it's all kinds of screwed up) Great video!

I got into an argument with some people in my type club who liked to do low and fast flybys about whether to pull to get altitude or just meander around. I'm one of those rocket surgeons, so of course my position was pull to get altitude. They didn't believe me when I said it's better to convert that energy to altitude than to bleed it off as drag and that the harder you do the initial pull the better even though you're briefly causing induced drag to increase. It got to the point where I had to create a drag polar for our planes and put it into a spreadsheet with the different strategies. That basically shut down the discussion. That was unfortunate because there was more discussion to be had. One of the guys who would do these very low and fast flybys would later have a rod thrown on him climbing out on a cross country, and I have to believe it was at least in part due to exceding engine red line almost every time he did this.

Actually, instead of thinking about climbing, or putting the nose down, the magic bullet here is to think best glide. Sometimes you might need to pull up and gain altitude, sometimes you might need to push down to get an air speed. It’s all about best glide. Otherwise, you run the risk of stalling or not being able to get far enough for your preferred emergency landing spot

“How much does the engine cost for that”
This is one of those “if you have to ask, you can’t afford it” ones.
Boy was all that speed handy at that moment in time, glad it was readily converted to altitude or this would have been a remarkably different chat.
