    That's a fabulous tutorial, thanks for sharing. It was easy to see the whole pick-soldering process and make sense of the metal/flux/solder relationship. The finished pieces are attractive as well.

    Fantastic. I benefitted and intend to do right away..........which now - a year later - I’ve made a half dozen or more. The hardest was a tiny genuine arrowhead. Larger is easier......And I’m better at pick soldering now.

    I enjoy this technique, for there are many stones that are lovely front and back. Or, simply too bulky or awkward to go into a bezel cup, and lovely as they are without being further cut.

    Personally, I would use the straight prongs on a stone with a lot going on in it, and reserve the flattened, fancier ends for plainer stones. That's obviously a matter of preference, though.

    I am surprised you did not get any fire scale from this. Maybe when I am using my torch it's got a larger flame and that's what I am doing wrong.

    My first time learning about free form prong setting. Took notes verbatum style. One question what is pickling ? Is it cooling down the ring and then cleaning it in what liquid specifically ?

    • @beaducation
      @beaducation  9 років тому

      Krisinda Boyce pickling is when you soak your piece in a solution that removes the fire scale that the heat causes. "Quenching" is cooling your piece down by tossing it in water. Check out the video on this product for more info :) beaducation.com/zen_products/900-little-dipper-pickle-pot

    I am now trying to do this project with copper wire and copper wire solder that doesn't need flux. Having hard time getting it to flow. Should I still use Handy flux ? Or is handy flux preventing it from flowing ?

    I have a question about bending the prongs. Especially if the piece has been tumbled won't it be quite hard? Wouldn't you risk crunching into the stone? How do you make sure you don't damage the stone when the prongs are bent? Thank you.

    • @beaducation
      @beaducation  6 років тому

      Hi Marian, sorry for the late reply, a bunch of comments got hidden, very odd. Anyway, you just have to make sure you place the very gently and you don't work with a stone or object that is too soft or fragile.

  • @jeanmenden5105

    Good job, but how do you hang that pendant when there is no bail? The jump ring isn't orientated correctly for a chain.

      Hi Josh. I can't find the point where he uses a stamp, can you send me the time stamp of that part of the video? In the meantime, we now have our stamps on our site listed by size (at the largest dimension), you can find smaller stamps here www.beaducation.com/pc/98-metal-stamping-tools-metal-design-stamps?utf8=✓&qry=&choices%5B220%5D=on&choices%5B221%5D=on&sort_order=Newest

      it doesnt actually show him using the stamp, it just shows after its done. i havent been able to find stamps smaller than 3 mm, it looks like his is maybe 1.5mm from looking at the design in his hand. shows at 23:24. will check your link.

    This is so confusing! What size gauge of wire, what size gauge of solder wire, does "handy flux" go bad, what size of solder pieces to use, can I use silver solder paste... I am so overwhelmed and all I want to do is create!

    • @beaducation
      @beaducation  7 років тому

      There sure is a lot to learn eh! I say just dive in. Here is a list of all the tools and materials used for the class. As for solder paste, that seems to be a personal preference. Joe prefers wire solder, but you could try paste, it might work. Maybe practice in copper wire first while playing around. Good luck :)
