Indian Air Force's Most Successful Airstrike (And They Didn't Even Know About It)

- In the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War, both Air Forces launched numerous counter-air missions. Indian Air Force often used Hawker Hunters. Equipped with four powerful cannons, they could effectively strafe any enemy aircraft caught in the open. On 8 December, four Indian Hunters from No 20 Squadron attacked Murid airbase and they estimated their effectiveness to be quite good. They thought they had damaged a transport aircraft and two MiG-19s. The real truth would remain hidden for seventeen years and it would come from an unexpected source.

Pakistan had only superior airframes, thanks to US' generosity. The IAF had to evolve tactical and pilot capabilities owing to the limitations of the Soviet machines they flew.
Gnat was a superior aircraft to the Sabre though. But yeah, IAF pilots are complete monsters of the skies
@@michaelpascual3581 i dont think that would be an accurate answer buddy but yes the design helped them to have a slight advantage in air to air combat...
Well, Sabre was pretty outdated by this time. F-104s had their limitations and Pakistanis only had a handful of them.
@@showtime112
Agree all fleet of f86 and f104 was suffering from shortage of spares due arms embargo put by usa at end of 65 war and mig 21 is far far superior to any thing that paf had and uptil 1971 iaf have huge fleet of it
The place where India truly triumphed over Pakistan was the co-ordination between the different branches. Just airframes are not the war. India and Pakistan had similar capabilities for most part in 1v1 scenario. However, Indian Airforce would provide beyond excellent support to it’s ground and naval forces in 65, 71, and 99. That's something PAF never could do properly.
Hawker Hunter, what a beautiful, beautiful aircraft!
I think many people would agree!
It’s kinda hilarious how much Indian military, specially IAF downplays it’s achievements-
Shoots down a MiG 19 using the Su-7, doesn’t confirm the kill, later was found out to have destroyed the jet
Attacks Murid Airbase destroying multiple Sabres, thinks that it has blown up a C130 and 2 MiG-19s at most
Completely obliterates the Muntho Dahlo logistics base during Kargil war, thinks of it as barely a small objective whereas that was the primary logistics hub of Pak NLI (Btw, I will wait for you to do the Muntho Dahlo bombing)
They are a cautious service indeed 😁
Is better!!!....many AF believe the own propagand...
Indians are generally modest. We don’t go around proclaiming that our country is the best and we sure don’t go around making terrorism the biggest national export unlike a certain other religious group
@@16rumpole I won't say "Indians" per se, rather it’s Indian military who believes very much in this "humble" attitude

You can tell the IAF pilots still love the hawker hunters while the PAF pilots also still love the f-86 sabres ever since both retired from service. Please do the history of Israeli Gloster meteor vs Egyptian de havilland vampire or more India Air Force hawker hunters stories.
I intend to cover some IDF/AF stories from the early wars, WT allows it with various available assets.
True @Spitfire sammons! Both were / are beautiful aircraft. I am currently modelling both in 1:48 scale in IAF and PAF livery.
Both beautiful beasts built for real men who fought there battles upclose and personal unlike those of today who don't even get to see their enemy the missiles are fired from hundreds of miles away.
The F16 pilots shot downby Abhinandan and not acknowledged by Pakistan will be rolling in their Graves.
Please make more videos of MiG-21s in East Pakistan, you can refer to "Eagles over Bangladesh". No 28 Sqn IAF
There was certainly a lot of fighting going on in the East and I hope to cover some of that in the future. Thanks for the suggestion!

Thank you very much! I appreciate what you are doing as well!
Great presentation. You may want to make a video on an Indian pilot destroying Chuck Yeager's aircraft during the 1971 war. The pilot, Admiral Arun Prakash, then a Lieutenant, was from Indian Navy, a Sea Hawk pilot who was sent to the Number 20 sqn of IAF on deputation during the 1971 war and flew the Hunter. He lead a strike on Chaklala air base on 4th December where he first targeted a water tank thinking it to be the ATC tower, and then went on to destroy Chuck Yeager's beechcraft. Admiral Arun Prakash went on to become the Chief of Indian Navy
Thanks for the comment and suggestion! It would be an interesting video except that there are no general aviation airplanes in WT. Maybe if they introduce them someday.
Chad
Gee…. a water tank and a Beechcraft…… quite the mission success.
@@olddiver PAF had moved away all its assets from the forward Chaklala air base, predicting an IAF strike. They forgot to inform Chuck Yeager though. The only aircraft at the base was his Beechcraft. It was still a significant raid, as it was seen as India's way of hitting back at US, the latter was supporting Pakistan in 1971 war. Infact the then US ambassador Edward Ingraham described in a book that how frustrated Chuck Yeager was, blaming the then Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi of instructing the Indian pilot to target Yeager's aircraft. He even sent a top priority cable to the Washington asking for "immediate countermeasures."
Edward Ingraham later described this incident as the Indian way of giving Uncle Sam ‘the finger’!
@@karmanyasharma9256 interesting.
I wonder what was Yeager doing here.
Fighter aircraft of the combatants in 1971
-PAF operated: f-86 (American f-86f and Canadair mark 6 versions purchased from Iran), f-104g, Mig 19 (j-6), mirage iii ea.
-IAF operated: mystere, folland gnat, hawker hunter, su-7, mig 21 (fl), and HAL HF-24 Marut
So we have a combination of: American, British, Chinese, French, indian, and Soviet designed all going into the cats paw.
That's pretty much it. Chinese didn't quite design anything, they rather copied someone else's design 😊

At the night of 8th Dec India would do Operation Python. These attacks on Pak airbases were a part of diverting Pakistan's attention from that operation. Granted it also helped to destroy Pakistani air capability.
Hawker Hunter is such an elegantly beautiful design
A classic indeed!
I do remember my uncle telling me stories of 71’s liberation war

The Hunters would have been more effective if they had cluster bombs
True. The wouldn't have depended on luck such as in this case.
In 1971 war, India achieved full air superiority at easter sector within two days. While in wester sector it took 5 days to achieve full control of Pakistani air space.
1971 war witnessed might of Indian Navy. Indian navy destroyed one-third of Pakistani naval strength and lost only one frigate in process, it was the most successful Naval war in the world.

The IRIAF raid against the H-3 complex April 4 1981 is probably the most succefull... 23 iraqui planes and 4 helicopters destroyed by a flight of 8 F-4 phantoms, two "D" and six "E" models...the iraqui commander and several officers were executed after the raid.

IAF Raid over Sargodha AFB in 1965 Indo-Pak War is also very successful as it broke the back of Pak Military, more specifically the PAF as after 9th September 1965, the PAF Sabres virtually disappeared from the skies.

It’s too bad that the Indians were not as ingenious as the Pakistanis were. While the Pakistanis installed AIM9 missiles on their older aircraft, the Indians who had access to French missiles could have used them on the Hunter.
The Indians were much more ingenious lol. Just in different ways. The Battle of Longewala, where 120 Indian soldiers and 2 jeep borne anti tank guns went up against 2 Pakistani Mobile infantry brigades consisting of more than 2000 soldiers, around 40 tanks, a field regiment and 2 artillery batteries, and WON. They held them back till the morning when IAF could send air support. 35 tanks destroyed, around 500 vehicles abandoned, hundreds killed and the rest injured and retreated, for the loss of 2 Indian soldiers, 1 recoilless rifle, and the biggest casualty were 5 camels lmao.
