MiG-21 vs Atlantique Incident (India-Pakistan 1999)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 10 гру 2021
- August 1999, less than a month after Kargil War. A Pakistani maritime patrol aircraft Breguet Atlantique takes off and approaches the border with India. Two MiG-21 bis from the squadron No 45 of the Indian Air Force scramble to intercept it. Squadron leader Bundela pulls alongside of the Pakistani aircraft and attempts to direct it to land. But, the Pakistani pilot pulls left and makes a dash back home. This is interpreted by the Indian pilots as a 'hostile act' and they ask for permission to engage the intruder.
Just like most other things relative to Indo-Pakistani relationship, two sides have rather different views of what happened. This video however relies mostly on the Indian interpretation.
Limited assets in DCS World made an approximation necessary. Breguet Atlantique is represented here by Antonov An-26, another twin-engine propeller driven aircraft.

You don't wan't to follow the interceptor ? Great, now explain yourself to the missile.
Forget Military aircraft, Pakistan had shot down Civilian aircraft in September 1965 even after Pilot confirming with the Ground station more than once. The aircraft carried a Chief minister of an Indian state and seven more people. The Indian Airforce has not willingly done it in History. Years later the Captain of the Pakistani aircraft asked for forgiveness and confirmed that the narrative . So stop all this nonsense of how would you feel.

I think it's fair enough, if you follow the interceptors and land everyone lives, the stink is short lived and a few weeks later the crew fly home. Silly mistake by PAF/Navy.
That's the most probable explanation, I'd say.
@Ghost Rider And you stop misunderstanding things.
@@showtime112 Please ignore this troll, you have done a great thing by unfurling the History and I appreciate your work, as an Indian, from the neutral point of view, I think all the sixteen should have been alive, if they obey the order from the interceptor.
But it is disputed that this aircraft ever went inside indian territory. How could they surrender to a foreign interceptor if they thought they were inside their own space?
we did treat the 90,000+ surrendered Pakistani POW's from 1971 with VIP standards for POW status so I agree with you on that they would've been scolded, spanked and sent back home if they'd had landed xP xD
As an American I can only say pakistan has a habit of playing double games
There seems to be a pattern of changing their stories a lot.
Hahah I love the part how Pakistan killed American soldiers with the help of Taliban 😂😂😂😂 keep it up boys 😛
Yes and your government have a strange habit to help pakistan
It is high time you stop supporting these terrorist supporters and liars. They continually lied to world that bin Laden is not in Pakistan till they were exposed after he was killed in Pakistan itself by Americans.. If they had trusted the pakistanis to find him he would still be alive directing terrorists from Pakistan. Such a terrible pathetic nation and their ideology. Thing is that Pakistan is an Islamic country built on Islamic ideology. So it will always support terrorists with Islamic ideology be it al Qaeda or Isis. Only thing is when you feed a snake to bite others the snake will bite the hand that feeds it too.
Americans need to get taste of their own medicine. While they were fighting Taliban Afghanistan. They were creating ttp in Afghanistan with India. Double games on both side.

He passed away later in a mig crash
Aggression or not, why on Earth would a Pakistani plane go inside the Indian airspace? And if it didn't, why would it fly close to the Indian border without any fighter escort? Especially considering that both India and Pakistan fought a war against each other just one or two months ago?
I'm no pilot or air marshal, but either the Pakistani side was over confident to not send any escort for their plane in case they get shot down, or they were over confident to think that a Pakistani plane would return home alive from an Indian air space if they didn't comply.
It just makes no sense...
One of the options is that they didn't think Indian interceptors would actually shoot. But maybe we'll never know for sure.
There is a gentleman's agreement between india and Pakistan not shoot down on such events. Lahore (Pakistan) and Amratsir (India) are so close to border that mostly airspace violation do happen but is understood by both sides. In my humble opinion, it was a sorry state of events by IAF.
@@venom8638 If countries don't value actual written agreements in times of hostility, one can only wonder how worthless 'gentlemen's agreement' would be. Just because both India and Pakistan have been hospitable enough to tolerate each other's airspace violation, doesn't mean it's going to be that way for too long, nevermind an actual war.
Whoever was in charge of the Pakistani air force, should've sent at least one or two escorts if they wanted thier men to return home alive. That is *assuming* the Pakistani plane did enter Indian air space and then refused to comply, thus getting shot down.
It happened once but India has done it 4 times!
India did it 7 times but with armed fighters & subs. Pakistan only shot down 5

As a Pakistani I'd say that this was a gross negligence and incompetence of Pak Navy. Ground control should've ordered it to return when Migs were picked on the radar or coordinate with Air force to scramble fighter jets from PAF base Masroor in Karachi.

An excellent and informative video, as always.
As a neutral observer I'd say: Pakistan is solely responsible for this. ELINT and recce missions are pretty commonplace between adversaries, and sometimes the crews get too enthusiastic about their mission and cross the borders. Ground control should've warned them when they crossed the border to return to Pakistani airspace immediately, and that would've certainly resulted in a diplomatic incident, but no loss of life, or at least they should've warned them to head home immediately when they spotted the two Indian interceptors on their radar. I know, landing at an airbase of a potential enemy would've meant serious consequences, due to the sensitive nature of their mission, but even if they lost contact with ground control, they should've landed at an Indian Air Force base, just like the EP-3 did at Hainan. This has left the Indians with no other viable options, as letting the Atlantique fly home without any hindrance was not an option.
Thank you for this elaborate comment! I have to say that I quite agree with everything you've written. With no emotional involvement, that's how things seem.
@@showtime112 Thank you for taking the time to reply! Indeed, emotional involvement sometimes blurs the line between hard facts and wishful thinking.
Another topic: do you plan to cover similar incidents in the future? Like the above mentioned forced landing of the EP-3 at Hainan, or the 1978 Iranian Chinook shootdown (4 Chinooks crossed the border and ended up in Soviet airspace, 2 of them were shot down, the other two managed to flee)?
@@IGLArocknroll I do plan to cover similar incidents. Whenever I can find enough facts and it we have at least similar assets in DCS.

Nope Indians were committed to land him in India or shot down , there was no third option.
India and Pakistan share a very non uniform zig-zag form of a border. So saying the plane fell in Pakistan doesn't make much of a defense. Had the pilot just followed the orders it could have been solved diplomatically but trying to evade a fighter will always put you at risk for either side be it India or Pakistan especially when you just had an all out war few months ago.

From what I understand, The Atlantique training mission did often include slightly intruding into Indian airspace and retreating before the Kargil war. This was more or less ignored in order to avoid any escalation by the Indian side. However, post Kargil war and the Indian side claiming the torture and mutilation of one of their down captured pilots during the war. IAF was looking for some sort of a payback and they got their chance this time when the Atlantique tried pulling out the same stunt.
I still mourn our Mig-21 pilot who suffered in the hands of Paki Barberians.

The fact that the Pakistani radar units didn't call its aircraft back is a clear indicator for a reconnaissance mission. The Pak Navy is responsible for the death of the airmen. In Germany the responsables would have faced military justice and would have stand trial for its incompetence. Or for giving stupid orders which is even worse.
You are taking about a developed democratic country following procedures. Pakistan and China don't fall in this category. You remember how after Chinese troops used iron rods on Indian troops which was supposed to be a no weapons border as per the agreement. Quickly stated how they lost no soldiers at all whereas India declared almost the same day that it lost 21 soldiers. After couple of months of the incident they released a video in which they were paying respect to the graves of the soldiers that died which proves that they don't care about procedures.
In Pakistan, they become dictators. Case in point is General Pervez Musharraf who ordered his men in the summer of 1999 to scale up Kargil heights on a suicidal mission. In any serious country, he would have been trialled and court martialled but in Banana Republic of Pakistan he soon mounted a coup and deposed democratically elected sitting PM.
You're talking about a country ruled by army. Every Pakistan general are millionaire

Your effort to work around ineligible plane types to present a close approximation is nothing less than heroic
Thanks for the feedback! If I wanted to be 100 percent accurate, this channel would have like three to four videos 😁
In 1965 Pakistan Dighter Aircrafts shot dead a VIP civilian aircraft carrying Chief Minister of Gujarat.... Which is much serious than shooting down a Spy Plane
20 mins u can't be there in another country's airspace that also with a military plane that is capable for ASW, their is no navigational error but act of war...ICJ has given the right judgement and whatever the Sq Leader Bundela has done is perfectly right...A clear case of instigating war
Have you done the same for the Feb 2019 Abhinandan incident?
Yes.
Can you please make a video about :SR-71 known incidents and the P-3 Orion incident from south china sea?(a chinese J-7 collided a recon us aircraft)
I suppose some of those things could be done. I need to do some research.
1:19 - 2:09 Super LIKE for Mig-21 take off ❤
Glad you liked it!
It's an amazing video and more than that your story telling makes your videos even better.
Keep making interesting videos as you always do.
Just to make it even for some commenters, try making a video of PAF F-86 shooting down an Indian Civilian Aircraft in 1965..... it's just that definition of coward has 2-3 different versions for our western neighbours. 1965 incident, 1999 invasion plan etc.
Thank you for your comment and positive feedback. I have to admit that I wasn't familiar with the story you mentioned but I will try to do some research. If there's enough information, it could be covered on the channel!
The most hilarious part was the Indian helicopter going inside Pakistani airspace, collecting pieces of the downed aircraft and return without any incident or proof of it being behind the LOC.
Very well explained 👍
Thanks!
a fictional video on USAF F-22 Raptor stealth multi role interdictor strike fighter versus IAF SUKHOI Su-30 MKI multi role interdictor strike fighter would be quite something . . .
Possibly. But both those are mods and I'm not sure how accurately they are simulated.
It's simple why the case was dismissed
Is this DCS world? While landing the Mig21 - during the roll out - you managed to keep the nose wheel up for a while. There’s no way to do this on the module I have. The nose wheel comes down as soon as the mains touch down. How are you able to keep the nose wheel up?
That's actually AI landing. Sometimes, I just don't feel like landing and instead, I arrange AI to do it. Easier that way.
You can keep your nose landing gear up for sometime after main gear touch down, if your landing speed is high or in case of flap-less approach and AOA is more than normal (should be.. in this case). this is from practical field, don't know about DCS MiG 21.
@@zsus1 You can keep it up as long as you have some stabiliser authority. Used to do that myself when I was flying MiG-21s, though its slightly more difficult on the bis variant
Aviator here..The indians were very professional in their method towards the intruder in their airspace.
Thanks for commenting!
I have been binge-watching the videos, seems like this channel is criminally unsubcribed. Keep up the great work!
Thanks a lot for this positive comment! I do seem to have fewer subscribers relative to the number of views. In fact, about 90% of views comes from non-subscribers. Not sure why that is but it's a lot better than many channels with 20.000+ subs but that can barely make it past a few thousand views per video.
Great effort to put this together. Also, accurate unbiased information on such events is almost impossible to find in either country - india or Pakistan. So it’s always a best effort basis. You did well to put the disclaimer that this is based on Indian sources. Pakistan sources are available but harder to get as you said. What is a relief is that such cases are rare between these 2 nuclear armed countries. There’s billions of people living in the region that would be impacted catastrophically should either or both lose their cool.
Thanks for the feedback! Relations between those two countries have always been volatile and probably deserve some more attention from the rest of the World.
'Also, accurate unbiased information on such events is almost impossible to find in either country' - you just took a typical western assumption and blew it up so large, UY Scuti would be envious.
@@gumnaamaadmi007 and India has been on such an industrial scale propaganda spree last 10 years where it’s people are told they are a superpower who do no wrong (but of course emigrate out of india voluntarily to never want to return in the millions), and how the West is evil and how plastic surgery was invented in India 5,000 years ago (at some Indian ‘science’ conference in 2016 I think!) and ALL of India’s problems can be traced to: 1. China 2. Pakistan. 3. British Empire. 4. NATO (as nato is jealous that india and Russia are best friends)! So please typing the name of large stars in our universe doesn’t make you immune from Indian propaganda!
@@Quantum-1157 Indian propaganda is better than pakistani madrasas propaganda who still belives Pakistan won every war and Osama bin laden wasn't living in pakistan even though they consider him hero of Islam
@@whysoserious7553 I think until drunk on special Indian cow-juice. I have been to both india (2016) and Pakistan (2018) and have seen that Indian media is fully controlled by the Indian govt and has zombified Indians into thinking that india is a superpower capable of no evil. All ills in India are blamed on of the following: 1. Pakistan. 2. China. 3. British colonial rule. 4 NATO - since allegedly NATO is jealous of the deep partnership between India and Russia. This is just ridiculous to say the least. In pakistan on,y the govt controlled channel is biased and in fact the rest of the dozens of private channels are usually critical of the Pakistan govt’s incompetence. Also, the e people in pakistan weren’t as obsessed with India as Indians are about Pakistanis. Regarding the terrorist Osama bin Laden being in pakistan, the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan is pretty porous. Pakistan is a poor country with many challenges and they have terrible governance. But India is a poor country that is in denial about its challenges and thinks it’s a superpower and blames all its problems on others. In terms of world security perspective, for me both are shite-holes with nukes!
Hey!!!! You should make a video on how subsonic jet Mystere shot down a supersonic F 104 just by cannon fire.
Hello! That is very interesting but we don't have a Mystere in DCS.
Lovely simulation. Thanks.
That's an aggressive posture. They made a wrong move towards the MiG.
Ha..thik..plane ta atlantique na dekhiye AN26 dekhalo....
Thank you for another Indian video 😁.... And BTW good research....... 👍🏻

I would like you to recreate the sinking of the HMS Coventry in the Falklands War
Thanks for suggesting. The events from that conflict will be given attention to once the Falklands map is released for DCS. We haven't had any news in the recent months but I hope it's not too long until it's available.
Or any of the Sea Harrier kills. Just for balance, obviously.

Thanks again, man!
I really like these histories. Tks
Glad you enjoy it!
Great video, im very impressed with DCS, the new MSFS looks very cartoony compared to this. Im surprised to see India still using the MiG21! Wow.
Thanks! I'm glad you like DCS. When MSFS came out, it was mostly considered much prettier.
Hi showtime could you Make more videla about Yugoslav wars
Hello! This topic will be covered more in the future. I needed to make a small break from it.
Make more Iraq air engagement too

@@abhassharma1468 not much about it. But clarified his own position and assistance from his wingman. When asked about launch distance, he told about 300-400 MTR distance..BTW he was Sqn LDR when we met , not Wing Cdr.
There's a very limited range of what you can do in DCS world. Missiles home on the center of the airplane and not necessarily on the heat source. Also, if you hit an airplane of this size with an R-60, it always survives. I needed to add two more 'explode unit' triggers just to make it go down. And you can't choose which engine it is going to affect.
I know that you can't choose which side of the enemy aircraft will be hit. Total explosive rod weight is little more than 3 kgs, that's why it is always recommend to fire 2 R 60 missiles to your target.. don't know much about DCS restrictions... whatever ,,video was nice..and please delete India-Pakistan fanboys comments. They will fight even after apocalypse.
@@zsus1 Maybe Bundela deliberately launched just one missile. This way he performed his duty but the target might have survived. I blocked some of the comments, I'll see if there's anything excessive worth deleting.
@@showtime112 THANK YOU..Bundela sir told exactly this deliberation. He was waiting for killing confirmation. He even gave approximate position of crash site to the Helicopter pilot in Pakistan side (Atlantique drifted toward Pakistan before crashing).
16 naval officers dead for what? Following stupid orders. They could have pulled back or complied by landing and surrendering at an Indian airbase. But when you fuel your men with unnecessary nationalism without question you sentence them to an early grave.
I salute our Indian Airforce Pilots for their outstanding service and valor.
The great presentation 👏
I appreciate your feedback!
Pakistan denied claim of soldiers who died fighting for their country's flag , and given a proper military funeral as per religious beliefs of the dead soldiers by Indian side. This says it all about which forces act professional. What kind of a navy sends a bunch of trainees to train in to the hottest war zone in the world that too a month after a bitter war !
