      It is really funny for you to say that singapore is for singaporeans. In 1967, the housing program took malay land without any compensation, the housing project also introduced quotas, which in every apartment 70% needs to be chinese, in 1967 also, the singaporean government began implementing policies that makes poor malays migrate to malaysia. And, there are proofs that funds are not given to the malays adequately, and, history education in singapore is beyond demeaning to the righteous aboriginal " malays " originators of singapore, which came from the word singa and pura, lion city, and inadequate funding of malay schools. Just because malaysia have constitutional aboriginal rights doesnt mean that our leaders bully other races. Just because some chinese and indian in malaysia say it it doesn't mean its true.

    • @frozenflava
      @frozenflava 2 роки тому +6

      @@adamharrold407 there are 75% ethnic Chinese in Singapore, so the 70% quota makes sense, and you didn't mention that they also made it compulsory for indians and malays live evenly together with the chinese to prevent racial clumping. Furthermore, Malaysia has a law enforcing the higher positions of any big businesses to be occupied by a minimum number of malays(bumiputera), this is a working position quota and not a residential quota, mind you. Lastly, do Singaporean chinese have discounts on buying houses/property(INCLUDING luxurious units) like the 7% Malaysian malays(bumiputera) enjoy, REGARDLESS of their financial standing?

    we dont always have to accomodate the malays. I remember LEE HSIEN LOONG in a speech he turned the tables on his father. He told the malays that they should not always expect others to accomodate them. Once in a while they should expect to eat together with people of other races , and not expect others to accomodate their needs always. I think most malays dont mind eating together as long as the food they eat is Halal. But there are others who are staunch and always expect special treatment.

      That was in the 60s and 70s when I was in school ..The malays were the original settlers here. So the govt then decided that they have to recognise that. They were given special assistance..as one malay person told me...they have free education right up to university and thats their right. I dont agree. In the 60s because of this, poor families paid $2 school fees or free. The rest of us had to pay first $4 and then $7 bUT the malays were authomatically given the right to subsidised school fees. I feel that is the reason why many of them are still backward ..My father used to say that iSTANA KG GLAM was the original family home of the former king and his descendants till just a few years ago. They had to move out and the govt took over the istana and the grounds. My father used to say the descendants could stay there and only pay $1 every month in rent. Just a token.

      Leonard Teo No to worshiping LKY. Saluting LKY, bowing to him and giving him a state funeral with the highest honor may be considered worshiping or glorifying the dead. To me, it desecrates our national flag by draping it over the coffin of a former dictator. We don't want to have the same mentality like North Korea where its people gave all the credit and honor to one man. A one man show. We don't want to only give all the respect to only one person. Lky may be tough but he can be an asshole at times. You don't pretend to be good under the guise of being tough, determined and hardworking. Anybody can be tough determined and hardworking in being a dictator. No LKY did not spoil Singaporeans or even pamper them. He fiercely opposed that. He made life in Singapore quite repressive and restrictive especially in the 70's and 80's and you still say he spoil them? I can only guess with your mentality lie this what you may do if you are prime minister. More R and R under the guise of discipline. Discipline is one thing but how you apply it matters. If you apply it too strictly, it can get too restrictive and suffocating. People may rebel and it will backfire your objectives. Both party losers. People are born free not to be subordinated to anyone or anything. LKY is not merely a respectable man. He is a controversial figure in Singapore. God knows how he got into power and remain in it with a very tight grip. Lky does not listen and respect others other than PAP, PAP supporters and himself so why should we non-PAP supporters or even the neutrals accord him with the utmost respect?

    GRC is a brilliant scheme to ensure racial representations, but it is not without problems.
    It was unfairly advantageous to the ruling party who could field better minority candidates for many years, resulting in an unintended result of piggybacking MPs bcoz of many walkovers. That was the biggest elephant in the room that both parties did not say out aloud during this debate.
    It took many years until opposition MP LTK took up the challenge to come out of his ward to take on a GRC and succeeded. This helped to raise opposition party in Singapore to become a credible force. It also helped PAP MPs to learn to win votes from elections the hard way, that is, it is possible to lose. They cannot take wins for granted.
    In the end, the GRC scheme worked in ensuring racial representations in electoral battles as intended and also raised the quality of electoral battles on both sides. For that, I salute LKY for his foresight.

    I am only 17yo coming 18. And I understand why PAP has to do all these policy and whatsoever, we feel angry sometimes, we have hard times sometimes but still, I know that this is the best for us. The upcoming generation will learn from it too I believe.
    And what I feel is that if there is a change in the government, life of Singaporeans will improve BUT FOR A SHORT TERM !!!! And while we enjoy that short term of low interest, low taxes we won't realise that Singapore is suffering from LONG TERM SUCCESS from lots of view. It would become a threat for us in many ways. So lets not play politics, vote for the right party and work hard for a living.
    Thank you PAP and I am waiting for more interesting news from you. Pioneer generation package was extremely good!!

      the thing is, change is not just... change. there are accompanying risks. it is a fact that many ppl make uninformed choice when it comes to voting. which is fine, because they can learn from that decision. but, we should not fantasize that change will always be good. actually if singaporean thinks that PAP has ruled for 'too long' and decided that let's give the opposition a chance, sure why not. but in terms of development, governance, social harmony etc, there will always be risks, which ppl should really be informed about.

    Isn't giving a fix seat to specific or every race be actually dividing the culture. The point is to all live together as Singaporean, regardless of race isn't it? Who should be the candidate or take the seat should be based on their ability and not race or other irrelevant factors.

    • @weilm

      +Ken Yap I don't think you got the basis of LKY's basis of his argument. He basically said that we can't deny the fact that people do have the tendency to vote for candidates of the same race and that we must accept that fact. Hence, the necessity of the racial mix rule for GRC

    • @cairene
      @cairene 9 років тому +3

      +Weiliang Mah Which by itself, enforces racism. That fact that u will favour ur own race over reasoned policies. Whether one accepts it or not, only racists would vote for their own race purely on the colour of the candidates' skin colour. Look at the USA. President Obama is an african american, a minority race in the USA. The GRC policy has always been flawed if one were to insist Singapore was based on meritocracy.

    • @weilm

    • @cairene
      @cairene 9 років тому +1

      Nope, but in Singapore, JBJ was elected by a constituency of mainly chinese constituents. Before that, David Marshall. Majority of Singaporeans, were and are never racist in their mindset.

    • @skychaos87
      @skychaos87 8 років тому

      ***** I understand your perspective but you have to realize that such system is actually self-defeating when it comes to ideology. You input people of specific skin color into the Parliament so people of the same race feels represented is nothing short of racism at work.
      I don't mean it as something absolutely bad as you also pointed out the advantage of such system. However we cannot deny the inherent bias and inequality based around it.

To put it in SG's context, sure many people will vote tharman, but there is also a group of voters who vote based on whether they feel a connection with the candidate. Mr LKY hates wasting time. If that guy has something brilliant to say, just like what opposition Low Thia Kiang said, Mr Lee would listen attentively and take it in. I like how LKY and his team uses data to make their analyses instead of just going by "gut feel". To those who were saying he was a "race realist" or whatever, you guys are showing how you didn't follow this video. He is actually showing how he stands against having ethnicity based MP's for minorities being mandated in constituencies. He is pushing the egalitarian viewpoint throughout. I wonder if he was in my state of Tamil Nadu, how much he'd be thoroughly against the current caste based reservation systems and how he'd promote meritocracy. Yes, TN is doing well relatively, but it could be so much better.
