I'm Singaporean and it's been almost exactly 5 years since LKY passed. Watching this now in 2020, I am still filled with tremendous gratitude, respect and awe that we had him as our national leader during those difficult early years of our nation. We moved from third world to first world in ONE GENERATION, it has never been done before and till today, no other country has accomplished the same unbelievable feat.
So proud to be called a Singaporean! Majulah Singapura! ("onward Singapore" in Malay).
I have been living in Sgp since the early 1990s. Very fond of the Singapore then, its true SouthEastAsian traditions and its people living it. I feel it has changed - there has been a lot of influx (for lack of better term) from China and India. Perhaps it is inevitable that such a small nation as Singapore was then - could not stay that way. So we got to live with it as best we can.
LKY has done a tremendous job for the country. I believe the majority agrees with that. Besides the pride that I understand many Singaporeans rightly feel for their country there should also be humility as to its future. The steps that this nation is going to take in the next 5 years will determine the next 50. Questions need to be asked and discussed openly. I feel Singapore again has an opportunity to be one of the leading nations for South East and Asia. Humility and self criticism are going to be crucial in its development.

This interview was conducted in 1967. Just two years after Singapore was found. Mr Lky already had the gut to stand up and fight for his own country. Singapore is a very lucky country to have a leader like him. The late Mr Lky is the greatest leader in our time. I still like to watch a lot of his old interviews. I respect and admire him so much.

Just because someone stands up and give a middle finger to the US doesnt mean they are great, they can just be a neutral party and talking back may have no reprecussions. What was great about LKY is that he had an extent of dependence on the US, while being able to disagree with them in a less offensive manner that doesnt invite aggression from the americans in a time as divisive as war.

LKY has a lot of balls. He basically is saying American interest is not everyone’s interests. When things goes bad now you blame surrounding countries for not helping, but they were never consulted to begin with.
It is always black and white with the American policymakers. There can only be two choices: "if you are not with us, then that means you are against us and are a threat to our national security". The concept of "we don't give a shit about you" is too difficult for them to comprehend, and whatever they cannot comprehend, just press the Bomb button. Let's keep it simple.
To begin with the Vietnam War was not so much to build up South Vietnam, but to destroy the Democrat Party of the USA.

This is a masterclass in how to handle a subtly hostile interview. Whatever you say about LKY, the man was an absolute grandmaster at handling tough interviews.
brilliant, the depth in his reply. He didn't just answered the question as they were asked, he addressed the true intent and meaning behind each question head on.
This is what politicians lack today. Being able to address and beat not only the question posed but the intent behind it. I only wish I was half as smart as some of the statesman of past.
Better yet, I wish those smarter than I and those elected would be able to do this and hold all our interests at heart.

In this case, I believe that the journalist legitimately did not understand the implications of LKY's statement and performed a normal (if somewhat overreaching) attempt at synthesizing a meaning that he could digest, presenting for LKY's consideration - which LKY then called out for its overreaching nature before expressing himself further.

It was 1967, a mere two years into independence for a tiny nation, located amongst SEA, a 3rd world region, LKY spoke with such confidence, charisma and articulation. Well done!!!

Can't agree more. He as a tiny city country leader changed the whole picture of not only Malasia and his Singapore by founding two new modern independent nations, but the giant China by helping Deng in China's market and diplomatic policy, who could make more difference given his position?

He actually predicted how the Vietnam war would ends in 1967 (8 years before it happens!) He foresaw the key to winning the war was whether Americans have the stamina and stomach to see through a long drawn war and that the TV broadcast of the war would change US public opinion of the war. Amazing! Superbly slick handling of the press in an unrehearsed interview. This video is a gem!

This is such a phenomenal understanding of the juxtaposition of the idealism and drive of youth and the sensibility and wisdom of adulthood. At some point, the leaders in the US started answering only to the powerful and wealthy that paid their campaigns, ignoring the cries for positive change and leadership from the teenagers and young adults.... And as a member of that group (I was 13 when 9/11 happened), as an adult now I am incredibly ashamed and incensed at the decisions the generation before me have made.
We've been raised in a lukewarm bath our whole lives, preparing for a world that didnt exist, and when we came of age and finally stood up and opened the door to the rest of the house, we found it engulfed in flames. Now, as we struggle to recruit enough help to put out the fire, our so-called leaders are rushing to pack their own bags as full as they can before getting out. The younger generations may be at times ignorant and stubborn, but they arent dumb. They see what has been built for them and they are not happy... and rightfully so. This man had the wisdom to understand the purpose of the revolutionary zeal of youth. Sadly the same can not be said about the leadership in the US over the last 60 years.

So many good nuggets by LKY here. One of my faves is at 15:50: "the young must be
idealistic, the young must believe that the world should be more just, and there should be more moral rectitude in the behavior of their leaders, and they protest..." but "at the end of the day I think decisions have got to be made by adults not teenagers but it's got to be made in such a way that when the teenagers become adults and they look back on these decisions they would be proud of the generation that went before them." LKY comprehends the restless energies of the young (for he once was the same), does not belittle them and recognises the idealism as a rite of passage.

This man was (pretty much) the most brilliant and articulate leaders of the 20th Century. He was a very clear-thinking nationalist. he also knew something about "The Arrogance of Power."
I concur with your observation
Part that blew me away was his understanding that the decisions his generation made had ramifications and would be something the future generations would look back to and assess and use as an example of what matters. That is some deep thinking compare to the US leadership which was especially pronounced the last 4 years that one has to feel sorry for US future generations given their examples.
He is in no way a nationalist in the sense that he was extremely dogmatic, conservative and chauvinistic. LKY was simply a pragmatist that served his people well. Doing what's best for your country is not the same thing as being a nationalist. Chang kai shek was also a nationalist, so was Hitler, Stalin, Mao-Zedong, Mussolini, Hussein, Netanyahu and so forth.

I just came across Mr Lee Kuan Yew interviews I’m hooked ,this man as a way with words ,he is schooling these journalists
I lived & worked in Singapore back in 2013-2015, saw Mr. Lee's state funeral on TV while working. I cried... Thank God he got a super genius son to take care of Singapore.
Now in 2023, I re-watched all his interviews on YT & read the books written by himself.
True wisdom, opened up my mind to see through the world & ways of life.... How to deal with things & people, skillfully & confidently.
His hard-headed realist style & "fuck around find out" way of dealing with those that are lack of basic morals or commonsense, WOW

56 years on! What LKY said back then about US foreign policy, his deep understanding of human nature and unparalleled knowledge of Asian and South East Asian geopolitics has truly aged well. Every time I see a LKY video, I watch, I click like.
Some people just don't get it...LKY wasn't dodging the questions...he was just being extremely cautious in his reply because he did not want anything he said to be used against him or Singapore. He was trying to be as precise as he possibly could so that nothing he said could be taken out of context. LKY may not be perfect...no human person will ever be....but in this particular instance, I think he did right by the country... It's sad how some Singaporeans can't see this and choose to criticise him by bringing in other matters irrelevant to the video.

Im just a 20 year old man from Laos who used to study in the government school in Singapore Whitley secondary school and I am so proud to have that opportunity back then as I could pick up all those lessons and the way Mr Lee Kuan Yew Lead not only the nation and the people in Singapore but also me who is not even a Singaporean but when I’m there I have a strong sense of belonging ❤️.

LOL, that statement made me laugh out loud. The 'friendly habit' is so ingrained. They keep trying to 'corner him' that Singapore should contribute to supporting American arms.

Mr Lee spoke his mind openly, courageously to the USA in a see-all interview. He has never bowed to the pressure of the interviewers to speak nicely of USA. Respect for his insight and courage.
I recently travelled to Singapore after not being there since 2013. My god, the rate in which Singapore has developed in just 10 years is astounding.
Obviously the US was more interested in making money than stopping him.
His keen sense of observation and deep understanding of the situation then made him one of the great thinkers of our time. Being eloquent ups the persuasive notch.

First class interview. He challenged the free liberal press who just talks about universalism without looking into their own mistakes
Watching this now shows how a visionary leader LKY was and how we missed such a man on the world stage. I am tremendously proud of him and know my fellow Singaporeans are in much gratitude of having him as our first prime minister. This interview shows how well he understood the world and power play between countries and his careful and at times pointed answers to the journalists when commenting on the vietnam war.
Thank you Mr Lee for your unwavering love to Singapore. You have made Singapore to what she is today. I am proud to be a Singaorean.We will miss you dearly and continue on building the Singapore you left behind for future generations. We find solace that you have reunited with your wife Mrs Lee. RIP. Those harsh questions throwed to the respected LKW were likely setting up trap to let LKW fall into it. But LKW has wisdom to overcome this and a super wised man like him lead the conversation and absolutely handle the situation handsomely. What a sharpful mind.

- Dr Goh Keng Swee, a visionary genius who formulated many of Singapore's defence, economic, housing policies, and who was also an advisor to the Chinese government in the 80's
- Mr S Rajaratnam, who was highly respected in the Foreign Relations
- Mrs Lee (Kwa Geok Choo), who drafted our Johor Water Pact, together with..
- Mr E W Barker (Johor Water Pact)
- Mr Tommy Koh, a respected negotiator and President of the 3rd UN Conference of the Law of the Sea
- Mr Kishore Mahbubani, who was Singapore's Permanent Rep to the UN
And the list goes on.
How blessed we were..I.hope the spirit of our forefathers lives on!
Almost every Singaporeans knows these widely publicized great names, but I dare say, no more than 5% know Dr Albert Winsemius (anyone whom I mentioned this name to, never heard of him), who had contributed selflessly, not a grain of salt lesser than any of these named individuals.
On his death, MM Lee even gave a testimonial thanking Dr Albert for his great contributions. Dr Albert was the turbo charger in the early founding years, propelling Singapore many years ahead.
Do a search and read up on Dr Albert Winsemius.
One of the main reason you have this list is that they have the minds of their own and they want to control their own destiny instead of being a client nation of the West. On the contrary, Taiwan is a different story...

Watching this interview of the late LKY got me inspired with awe on how great a leader this man was for his nation. He showed great resolve to answering most of the interviewers political questions in a tactful manner. I marveled at his political adroitness of South East Asian nations during this time period on how fragile their relationships are to the influence of the big countries in the East and West. Thank you for uploading this video. The world should study this Singaporean Leaders videos and words of wisdom.

Tbh, in my opinion, LKY is Singaporean, letting LKY go is probably a wrong and correct choice, wrong because Malaysia lose a great talent, correct is because LKY would have been where he is now without leaving Malaysia. And that is why many talented Malaysian left Malaysia to be a great talent elsewhere. The brain drain already happened since the founding of Malaysia. The irony.

If he had the will like LKY and his foresight and planning, he would have created a different Malaysia. If he had study how Switzerland coexist within one b another, he could have used the same modelling of nationhood
@@xcjsmith5310 to be sure, it was precisely race-based politics that drove Singapore out of Malaysia. LKY's slogan for a 'Malaysian Malaysia' was then touted to be socially divisive. Lee, on the other hand, could not accept how a nation could be united if there remained a privileged group. In the prospect that Lee's party could garner the support of the ethnic minorities (which made up sizeable enclaves in some states), Tengku was left with two options. First, have him arrested or force Singapore out of the Federation. (legend goes that Robert Kuok was instrumental in saving Lee from the greater evil). In the end, Singapore was kicked out. LKY cried on national tv because his people was made to face the bleakest future.
A great passionate man by any measure, yet it was probably the circumstances he faced that drove him to achieve an impossible dream.
He is a brother, father and grandfather figure to us Singaporeans. A well respected one. He was a very foresighted man who already had a vision of what Singapore would become as it is today. I truly respect his knowledge and leadership. We are a small nation but we are not afraid. We shouldn’t be. I miss you grandpa and grandma. May Mr and Mrs Lee watch over Singapore from above.

To be able to speak so sharply, accurately, confidently, smartly and with so much charisma, just imaging the amount of preparation, "homework", practice and self rehearsal done. This is why Mr Lee was so successful. The man is hardworking as hell. I watch this over and over again just to see how he put this 4 reporters to the grill. #Barbequechicken
Consider this interview was done in 1967, the view that LKY had mentioned at that time still hold true today, some highlight about US need to have infinite patience, instead of instant resolution, and when China has developed, it is good for the region too..

Watching this video after his passing, allow me to know him even more than just a minister in my country. The more I feel thankful that he is a Singaporean and also one whom truly care for his country and have contributed more than just his life for Singapore. I can't say I have live in his era, but I feel enormously fortunate to be in the era that he has built. As a tribute to his life and his accomplishment, I will in my lifetime do my best to contribute to my country. Now I will love that he can finally rest and do not need to jump out of his grave having his baby continues to prosperous and having a long time to come.

No, Bruce Lee was the Lee Kuan Yew of martial arts.
Same cockiness, confidence and eloquence. Both good looking too. During one of his visits to Taiwan, LKY saw an elderly woman selling fruits on the street and casually chatted with her. Taiwan's then president Chiang, who was accompanying Lee, stood nearby looking uncomfortable and embarrassed. Why? He could not understand what they were talking about. Chiang could not speak the language. Talk about irony. LKY might have used the Hakka dialect, which was the mother tongue of his ancestors I believe, to converse with the elderly lady. Hakka is spoken by a significant portion of the population in Taiwan.

Not only am I impressed with LKY's charisma, but his forward-thought and how true his words still ring sends chills down my spine. We are so lucky to have had him as a leader.

He made and transform the backwater of Singapore into a first world oasis in a third world country...a modern metropolitan and dynamic society. Other SEA nations can't do much beyond protesting to UN, cause they are weak, and China is strong.

And Soviet Union agreeing with China back then was due to common interest in checking American power, as well as spreading communism. Big powers do not care about justice, only bullying to get what they want. Heck, back in 1940's both RoC and PRC staked claim on Outer Mongolia as part of China, even though Mongolia was a fully different and independent nation by then.
This sharp contrast is so interesting to watch: Americans being simplistic, linear minded, full of cliches and incapable of thinking on their own, while LKY sophisticated, dynamic, charismatic, sharp-minded and very original.

listening to him speak in 1967, and over the years 70s, 80s, 90s, really showed his consistency in character and answer: equal opportunities for all, respect for every individual, non-violence way of solving problem, non-commital in any strategies taken to solve problem - always adapt yourself as the environment changed, and being all-inclusive in your perspective of the world with the ability to focus on the important issues at hand: jobs, economics, education, culture, religion/race, and lastly defence.
I love him dearly and will miss his fiery and passionate speeches. Mr Lee always keep me riveted to my seat. Glued, just glued to whatever he says - especially how he has to fight his enemies. What a leader !
