Hi, I have a quick question, Does the Videomic NTG work with your iPhone via a connection using the USB-C to Lightning cable that came with the iPhone? I tried using the cable that came with the iPhone but the mic and iPhone doesn't seem to connect. I actually sent an email asking RODE whether using the cable that came with the iPhone should be a viable option, instead of answering with a simple 'yes' or 'no', they replied to my email by recommending the SC-15 and called the USB-C to Lightning cable that came with the iPhone a 'third-party cable". It would suck if the SC-15 is a requirement to use the Videomic NTG with the iPhone. Thanks!
Not tried that since the iPhone I have came with a USB-A to lightning cable but those cables are for charging the phone so I would think the USB-C to lightning cable you have would not work with the mic. You don't need the SC-15 cable to connect the mic to an iPhone. You can use the 3.5mm cable that came with the mic and a lightning dongle adapter, however the SC-15 cable will give you a better quality of sound and enable you to take advantage of all the features of the mic. The SC-15 cable contains a chip especially designed in cooperation with Apple specifically for the Videomic NTG, hence the reason for the $25 price. Thanks for watching the video! Hope this helps.
@@IsomPhilips Thanks for the answer! I figured if the cable could transfer data from the iPhone, why can’t it be used to connect the iPhone with the VideoMic NTG. What’s weird is that I actually can use the mic with a samsung phone with a third party USB-C to USB-C cable. So it seemed rather unreasonable that it would not work with the iPhone using its own cable.
Ha! Rode even sells a USB-C to USB-C cable to work with Android phones. As for the iPhone it just could be a collusion between Apple and Rode to keep things proprietary. Very concise, clear and helpful. My amber light came on when I was testing my mic and I wanted to be sure what that light meant. Medium charge is such a loose term unfortunately.
Rode videomic Go 2 and Sennheiser mke 400. Which of these two microphones is better to use for ASMR videos? Some bloggers claim that the Sennheiser mke 400 microphone has relatively strong 'self noise', is that true? 🙏
You can only monitor when using the mic as a USB mic by plugging your headphone into the 3.5mm input. When using with a camera there's no monitoring capability unless your camera has a headphone jack. Thanks for the question and thanks for watching!
When you select an audio track in FCPx go to inspector and look at audio configuration. There you can select dual mono. That will split the track into left and right channels. You can then listen to the individually. The safety track should be 20db lower. At least that's how I remember doing it. A video search on UA-cam might possibly give you a better way. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
You could safely use the 150hz but if you're in a very noisy environment you might want to use the -20db pad. In addition you can engage the safety channel which will cut the sound on one channel by -20db. Using both will give you options to get the best recording, You may try a test run beforehand to see what works best. Thanks for watching!

If the problem continues I would contact Rode support. If you bought the mic from an authorized Rode dealer and registered it you have a 10yr warranty. Hope it works out for you! thanks for a great no filling video. I like that. Being a no nonsense type of person I wanted to ask you, Rode recommend using the VXLR PRO adapter when plugging into a recorder. Why would I need this when I have power onboard the mic itself and no need for phantom power I wonder?
Depending on the type of recorder you have you wouldn't necessarily need the VXLR PRO adapter unless that recorder only accepts XLR inputs. I have a Zoom H5 which has a 3.5mm TRS input on the mic capsules. If you have such an input then you don't need anything else. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!

I got my mic today and plugged in to my mini mac and didn't start the charging, why is that ? Now I plugged to the wall ( with the conector usb/ ac ) and it is charging , now I hope it will work with my Canon M50 Mark II mirrorless camera , my canon camera uses TRS connectors not TRRS as the Video MIc NTG , before I ordered on line I asked the question if that mic will work with my camera they said yes but I had tried another mic with TRRS connector and doesn't work !! well if it doesn't work I'll send it back , I hope they don't give a hard time like other companies had done that to me.
When plugged into a computer, it becomes a USB mic. It will not charge through a computer or laptop. Can only be charged through AC power but you won't need to charge it often since you can get up to 30hrs on. one charge. The VideoMIc NTG has an auto sensor that allows it to work with TRS or TRRS connections. I used one with my M50 for 2yrs with no problem. Should work fine with your M50 MkII with no problem. Enjoy the mic and Thanks for watching!
i have problem with the auto on feature on my sony a7siii after i updated the firmware of rode ntg . anyone got any solution to this? oh ! and it also record on channel 2 only ... 😩
I don't own any Sony Cameras but I have had occasional issues with the auto on/off feature. I solve it by turning on the mic manually before plugging it into the camera and keeping it on throughout recording. You just have to remember to turn it off when you're done. I hated doing a whole take to find out I had no audio. As for the Channel 2 issue, not sure unless you unintentionally engaged the safety channel. Thanks for watching the video!
I’m having a problem with it staying on or turning back on when I turn my camera off. I should be able to hit the power button anytime to turn it on and off…is anybody having this problem? With canon eos r?
Hi! Do you use this mic for this style of video you are doing right now? If so would you mind sharing what settings you use? Also how far away are you from the mic? Looking forward to hearing from you! Thanks!
I usually set the gain level around 12-13 and I use the 75hz High Pass filter. I boom the mic overhead so it is just out of frame about 8-9" from my mouth. Experiment with it and see what works best for you. I think this mic also works well mounted on the camera as long as you are fairly close. Thanks for watching!
@@IsomPhilips Thank you so much! I tried the same set up you mentioned and it worked great! I think my problem was I had the gain to low and I was much to close to the mic lol Do you have a video on how to use the safety track feature??
hi great video got a deeper understanding on how to use this, do you have any tips as to how to avoid recording chicken, passing vehicles and playings kids sound i get to record them even when they are blocks away. for context i try to make asmr cooking video all the windows and doors are closed, my setup is sony a6400+video mic ntg plugged using the default cable, (gain knob on 13, camera gain on 1) i get a lot of hiss or white noise too, so i had to heavily rely on noise reduction in post production with adobe PR, hope you can help me maybe im using the mic and my setup wrong?
Hard to say without taking all factors into consideration. The gain setting at 13 is high. Try going down to 10 or little below and set your camera gain just slightly above zero. Also, check your mic placement. You want to get it as close to you as possible while keeping it out of frame. Booming overhead works best. Not sure about the white noise but a higher gain setting will introduce more noise and make sure your firmware is up to date. You can check it on the Rode website. Thanks for watching!
fantastic vid. I just got this mic. I was going to use this for livestreaming. I'm hearing a little background noise in the playback. Possibly the AC vent. I will keep the mic connected to my PC (docking station) permanently. I hope that won't damage the battery or mic usage.
Thank You and thanks for watching! Be sure and activate the High Pass filters, either the 75hz or the 150hz. Those will help filter out any low frequency noise. Keeping the mic connected to your docking station shouldn't be a problem
Excellent information. Thank YOu! Could you make a video about how to use it on my desktop pc through the USB-C to USB 3 cable? I am picking all my computer fan's noise and the cars outside my window. I can't figure out how to do it since I bought the microphone two months ago. When I record in the same room with the NTG connected to my iPhone through the SC15 cable the sound is neater with less fan noise. Thank you in advance.
Thanks for the video, I bought the rode ntg but I haven't find my sweet spot yet. It records so much noise that it needs to edit the sound after. I'm using a dslr camera. With the settings u said but still... any other recommendations?
Go to the Rode website and check to see if your firmware is up to date. There are a number of other issues that could cause the noise. Sometimes setting the gain level too high will pick up more noise or there could be interference from electrical appliances or other audio equipment. Check your camera's mic input and preamp settings with other mics to see if it's a problem with the camera. Also make sure the Automatic Gain Control on your camera audio settings is disabled. If none of this helps, contact rode Customer Service to see if they can offer any other suggestions. Thanks for watching the video and thanks for your input.
Oh my God!!! Isom you have saved my day, thank you so much, I just did all what you said and the sound is perfect now, I was a little bit worried to be honest that I wouldn't be able to fix it today and probably wait days to change the mic. Thank you so much!!!! 😀😀😀😀😀😀😀
There is a 3.5mm input on the microphone capsule where you can connect the Videomic NTG. You will probably need an extension cable. Thanks for Watching!
Awesome, informative video. I currently use a RODE videomic NTG for my videos and I really like it so far. I’ve watched all of your RODE mic videos and they have helped. Do you own the WS11 windshield? How well does it work? I’m thinking about buying one for eventual outdoor filming. Thanks!
Glad you found the videos helpful. Thanks for watching! I don't have the WS-11 but I have another fur windscreen that fits. It helps in moderate wind. If you get one just keep in mind that you still need to use it over the foam windscreen. Unless you shoot outside a lot in windy conditions, I wouldn't bother with it. If you do shoot a lot in windy conditions, the blimp would be best but quite a bit more expensive.
@@IsomPhilips thanks for the suggestion. I didn’t realize the WS11 had to go over top of the foam windscreen as well. The next thing I’m trying to figure out is the usefulness of the SC15 cord. I use the 3.5mm and it seems to work just fine when filming with my iPhone. Trying to determine if it’s worth the $30
Great video Isom! Quick question... I bought the Videomic NTG and I use it through my Canon 90D. I’ve been pulling my camera gain all the way down as low as it will go (1 notch up from 0) and then adjusting my NTG from there so as to get good levels on my subject without peaking. Usually ends up being about 11db (ish) on the mic itself and then about 3 ft from my subject. My issue is sometimes I get a sort of distortion/rattling sound when they get loud. I've prepared for their volume with my levels ahead of time and I’m not peaking at all levels wise but there is still a distortion when they get loud that I can't explain. Here's an example: ua-cam.com/video/_-xdbLXV8dc/v-deo.html Please let me know what I should do?
I'm very familiar with this issue. I have experienced it myself and mentioned it in one of my videos on the Videomic NTG. It happened to me when booming the mic overhead. I'm not sure what the ideal solution is but you may want to try using the -20db pad or use the safety channel which applies a -20db pad to one channel and see if you get a cleaner signal. For me, I think the best solution was to move the mic further away and increase the gain to make up the difference since this is a very sensitive mic. Let me know if any of this works for you. Thanks for watching!

Great video thank you so much!
Thank You for watching! Glad it was helpful
Phenomenal work, man. Got this mic and wanted to learn how to maximize its features indoors where there's noise all over the place
Thank You! Glad you found it helpful Thanks for watching!
Just the video I was looking for, thanks!
Glad it was helpful. Thanks for watching!
I’m having a problem with it staying on or turning back on when I turn my camera off. I should be able to hit the power button anytime to turn it on and off…is anybody having this problem? With canon eos r?
Prob would help watch the whole video first lol thanks I’ll try to turn it on first before recording to see if that works thanks
Very helpful. Thankyou

Thanks, glad that worked for you. As for the safety track I do not yet have a video on that but will try to work one in on a future video.
Thanks heaps! subscribed, very enjoyable presence on camera :)
Thanks for watching and thanks for the sub! Glad it was helpful

hi great video got a deeper understanding on how to use this, do you have any tips as to how to avoid recording chicken, passing vehicles and playings kids sound i get to record them even when they are blocks away. for context i try to make asmr cooking video all the windows and doors are closed, my setup is sony a6400+video mic ntg plugged using the default cable, (gain knob on 13, camera gain on 1) i get a lot of hiss or white noise too, so i had to heavily rely on noise reduction in post production with adobe PR, hope you can help me maybe im using the mic and my setup wrong?
Hard to say without taking all factors into consideration. The gain setting at 13 is high. Try going down to 10 or little below and set your camera gain just slightly above zero. Also, check your mic placement. You want to get it as close to you as possible while keeping it out of frame. Booming overhead works best. Not sure about the white noise but a higher gain setting will introduce more noise and make sure your firmware is up to date. You can check it on the Rode website. Thanks for watching!
@@IsomPhilips thanks my friend
fantastic vid.
What a great video! Very concise and helpful.

That's something I definitely will put on my agenda. Not sure why you're having that problem. Thanks for watching the video. Glad it was helpful
Thank You! Glad the video was helpful in improving your audio. Thanks for watching!
Such a good review ❤️🔥
In your opinion, this microphone is suitable for shooting videos of street musicians?
This was great - helped me out immediately.

how to connect zoom h8 to rode videomic ntg
There is a 3.5mm input on the microphone capsule where you can connect the Videomic NTG. You will probably need an extension cable. Thanks for Watching!
@@IsomPhilips thank you, what kinda extension cable
A 3.5mm female to male extension cable

Trying to determine if it’s worth the $30
I replied to your question about the SC-15 on the Community page on your other channel. For some reason your comment only showed up in my e-mail

Try to go to about level 5 on the Canon and reduce gain on the NTG to the point where you are peaking -12dB on the meter.
@@ww1www awesome! I’ll give that a try. have you had the same experience I mentioned above?
This video is so good that I feel that Im robbing you because its free. Thank you!
Thanks for your kind words. These kind of comments make all the work that goes into making videos worth it. Glad you found it helpful
There is a ton of clipping and distortion in this video/audio, I suppose it's coz you set the gain too high
Thanks for watching!
Its a shame that your sound is horrible in the video. Sorry to say
