I'm not indonesian, but I'm interested in indonesian history (or history of southeast Asia in general) and have done a lot of research in the past years and have no idea what she means either. But she probably doesn't know either.

@@misssteak1290 To be totally honest, that's how a lot of authors and other creators treat Native American tribes too. They act like it was all one big, homogenized culture, rather than lots of separate communities with their own histories, mythos and traditions.
@@user-gd2ys5tu8d kind of a weird comparison. you're noticing this difference because the concept of a "caucasian race" is outdated. lumping russian people in with israeli people is not a useful way to measure ethnicity unless you have creepy race-science intentions, which is why it's not used anymore (except for like, censuses, which imo it isn't useful for either). in topics where whiteness is still relevant, we talk about "white people" instead which is still broad, but not as much. it's almost like race is a social construct and not really based in science at all, so the only purpose for them is talking about social dynamics and not DNA.
"at least she was paying attention to your culture" is weird too. noticing the existence of indonesia is not a compliment. lumping it into a monolith and misusing its cultures, DEFINITELY not a compliment. "exotic brown people fascinate me" is not a new form of racism and it's never been nice, you're not breaching a novel concept.

Heyo! I’m autistic and it’s honestly so awesome to hear you call out ableism in books! Like, yeah, it sucked to hear that was in the book in the first place (tho I wasn’t exactly expecting the novel to be morally upstanding in the first place lol) but I kinda have become numb to certain levels of ableism in fiction. But hearing other people not being numb to it, and calling it out is so so SO refreshing.
Also, I love this series of videos. Started watching the Cassandra Clare ones and am moving back and binging your videos! They’re so well put together and interesting!

They're saying they wish mainstream media woud protray minorites and neurodiveregnt people better characters instead of being showcased in negative stereoptypes or misconceptions of their disorder. This isn't a bad or exterme take just the bare minimum of getting a character that isn't defined or stereotyped of their background, especially since we live in a world where ableism is common.

The autistic community like many other communities have fought hard to even be recognised as a diverse range people and not honestly what we have seen in the media.
I write comments like this because if you are writing a character whom is seen as a minority group, you should do it right or it can cause the negative stereotypes to be reinforced.
Especially when the minorities groups are just portrayed as villains.
If you want a bad guy who is a apart of a minority group, don’t make the reason they are bad.
Censoring stuff out won’t make it go away, it will just make it harder for people to understand people like myself and others who are minorities and help us.
Being treated like everyone else and to have the same accessibility to neurotypical people is what we want not to be treated like “paradise” as you say.
Also using autism as a comparison sexism is not a great look.
Autism is not a learnt behaviour.

I'm autistic and I was given this book as a book fair because a teacher's aid "thought I would enjoy it" in high school. I guess because it said autism in the blurb. I did not enjoy it, and it DID in fact make me feel very icky, even at 14

amber house was actually published in 2012. my grandmother got it for me at a scholastic book fair when I was in 4th or 5th grade. it was my first DNF lol

a random thing that i learned recently is that for a case to be considered in self-defense, there needs to be both an objective and a subjective threat. So, she could have very well be scared of him, but him standing outside the house does not pose a treat by itself. More so the existence of a video with her voice-over narrating an aggravating tale, can be used as evidence of premeditation, because why would you film someone just before shooting, unless it is to gather evidence. The same can be said about the gun, the fact that it has a single shot, that it was her who got the gun in the first place, that it was done that particular day.
He was opening the front door or had just come through it when she shot him. So slightly more threatening than standing outside, but he hadn't done anything and I don't recall that he had any weapon. There was a podcast about this case.
100% agree with the whole "1 star books get a lot of sales" thing. Literally the only reason I'm reading Lightlark is because of all the hilarious reviews. I need to read it for myself lol. (That being said, I'm waiting for my library copy.)

I have just started doing book reviews on youtube, and one of my greatest fears is an author finding my negative review of their books. Didn't realize it is considered taboo for authors to make contact with reviewers, but I'm glad to hear that.
Most authors do not care if you leave a negative review, in fact most authors will genuinely just understand and be grateful you gave them a chance: all writers are readers too so they mostly get it. Also sometimes it's not taboo for an author to interact in a certain concept, liking a post or a positive review and maybe saying thanks for reading is usually considered okay. Arguing with reviewers about their own opinion, acting like you were personally attacked, etc, are all interactions where the book community will usually rally around the reader and tell the author to back off. Or at least shade them to hell lol.
Love that the mom went off on reviewers, essentially being like: "You can't rate my book 1 star!! You are negatively impacting my livelihood and ability to earn money!!!"
Maybe write a better book lady. Reviewers have a right to give your book 1 star if they feel like doing so. No one is entitled to good ratings.

I know it's an outdated diagnosis (and named after a Nazi), but I've also known ppl who still used that label (I'm assuming because that was also what they were specifically diagnosed with)

Like ma'am, this isn't a court of law and you don't have to use word salad to get a good grade in review response.having the better/more articulate argument means nothing in this case.

i was in the same sorority as the author that wrote “the help” when it came out and remember being so uncomfortable with the content. just checked and yep this was in 2009 😬 our sorority (which i have cut ties from) has racist roots and at that time had very few Black members. you bringing up that area of racial stereotypes brought that memory coming back ughhhhh

Your kid talking about Breath of the Wild sparks so much joy. I also felt a little scared of going to Hyrule Castle (I assume). Stalnoxes and Guardians are pretty intimidating. Especially the Guardians that can fly, those ones suck.

At first I didn’t know about the beginning of the story, but then when you got to the murder, I immediately remembered it from a Dateline podcast. But they only mentioned the movie.

The podcast is pretty good- it’s mostly deconstructing the crime itself but also notes the irony, bc Tucker was playing a character who killed another in a similar fashion as she did in real life

If the character who forced their autistic sibling into having a meltdown was instead the framed as a villain, it would have been potentially compelling. I think all reasonable people know that’s awful, but for a villain arc? “The ends justify the means” is the go to villain arc, and honestly I’d be here for it if a) she were the antagonist and not the protagonist, b) the rest of the book wasn’t hot, wet garbage and c) authors weren’t emotionally venting at random people???

As someone who struggles with mental health, and I have a disabled mother, I hated ablist literature. It's one reason why I think "Me Before You" is one of the worst books I've ever read in my life.

In 99% of cases people complain about the depiction of disabled people (or minorities in general) because the depiction itself is harmful or incorrect, not because bad thinks happen to fictional characters.

Fun Fact: The Winchester Mystery house is was not built to confuse ghosts, the house was rebuilt after an earthquake knock the top story and several balconies off the house, leading to the doors and stairs to nowhere that the house is famous for.
The ghost story is more entertaining though.
@@user-gd2ys5tu8d it’s an old house that was rebuilt so a lot of it is either for things we don’t use anymore or just a patch up from when the earthquake broke it. I wasn’t alive when Sara Winchester was but by all accounts she was skeptic of the supernatural.
Oh read Ghostland: An American History of Haunted Places if you’re interested in this topic. It’s about several supposedly haunted places in America and goes into the histories behind them. As for the Winchester House, it does go into Sarah Winchester’s tragic past, but it also clarifies that Sarah’s odd house layout wasn’t due to an interest in the supernatural, but an interest in architecture.

Wow....uhhh Tuckers defense attorneys should never have handed that over. Their duty is to do what's in the best interest of their client, thus providing them a fair defense and making sure the justice system works the way its supposed to.
Not sure how I feel about them handing that over...
You know you are a handful when your defense attorney is like "yeah, let's turn in incriminating evidence.". Though it's possible she didn't even go through them?
Seems like they genuinely believed it would help her case. Like, the change to plead innocent seemed to have passed, getting tried for manslaughter instead of premeditated murder was probably the best they could hope for...

Unrelated, just with a question for the book community. Where do self published authors fall on this line of power vs no power? The people without that publisher support system. I want to write books but I love reading and am involved in the book community. I’ve seen other authors do both and I guess I didn’t realize there was supposed to be a separation. Like is it not cool for authors to review other books in the book community? Girl help!
From what I’ve seen, it’s okay for the author to be involved in the book community and to post reviews on others’ books, just don’t participate in discussions on your own books (unless they are replies to your own posts on social media, I would still be careful with interacting with negative comments though). I love interacting with authors who also review books ( a lot of indie authors do), but I don’t ever see them on their own book reviews and I hardly ever see them review books in the same vein as their own unless they know the other author (two indie authors exchanging reviews). I’d say it’s also not great mentally to read your own reviews as an author, I definitely wouldn’t want to. Hopefully that made sense!

Disabilities of any kind (I am using the term increisbly broadly here) are usually shorthand for something. They are symbolic or projection, etc. You can tell the writer is good when it's just something the person has/is/experiences than something that defines them.

Thanks to The silence of the lambs, trans people being unbalanced and unhinged serial killers has entered the public consciousness and those negative ideas still affect living people. I know, if only real life ppl had the brains not to assume a fictional character the same as real people but this is the world we live in. Writers need to consider that some of their readers are rather stupid.
@@user-gd2ys5tu8d because it's badly WRITTEN. The issue is not that the character is not a good person but the way they are written. The characterisation is bad.
When defense attorneys do things like this, I wonder if they know their client is guilty and want to appear as if they're doing their job, but also don't want to give them a chance to get away with it. Or, he simply didn't like his client, because how could he? And didn't want to put up with them anymore.

I know this is 2 years old, but a wild small world... the only reason I know about Coffee Creek is because I'm a sewing machine mechanic in Oregon and Coffee Creek will take sewing machine donations to help teach women there to sew. You said "Coffee Creek" and I literally paused my game because it's such a specific saying. Such a small world. It's weird to think about if I've somehow indirectly interacted with her.
