    Certainly says a lot for the integrity of the boat and the skills of the pilot. Great job avoiding an area loaded with fans. Sorry JW was hurt but thank God it was only that bad. Kind of reminds me of Bill Muncey with the PT boat back in the early 60's. Amazing video. Thanks for sharing it.

      Bill Muncie,now there’s a name haven’t thought of in a very long time. If memory serves me he raced under many banners like Miss Thriftway, Thriftway II, Miss Bardal, my memory just tanked, oh and he lived on Mercer island same as outboard hydroplane racers Stu and Jeff Lowe. Funny how stuff pops in my head every now and then. Those were the days of thunder boats ,rolls Merlin and Allison engines out of WW II airplanes. I’ll go back to sleep now.

    Why didn't they show the cockpit view during the impact?

    wow.. time to put into the keels some spring loaded manually tripped drop down braking devices.. so the pilot can hit the brakes. or a slide down scoop at the transom that discharges water to the side like jet plane reversers. do they still have issues with salt water ingestion.. design the inlet duct for the engine that goes forward around the cockpit for extra layers of impact protection for the driver but with some baffles or bulkheads with opening up high to allow any water splash to drop out before it can reach the turbine inlet.

    It's not really "10 minutes too long". Key things happen around 5 and 6 minutes. But smart and quick thinking on his part. With no Skid fin, there is NO WAY that boat would of taken the corner, and he probably saved about a dozen lives avoiding the pits.

    @BelgianEvo yeah, from the crash the throttle was stuck and they had to shut down the fuel supply.

    I was there that day and taking pictures from the Judges Stand, like some said it happened so fast and it could of been a lot worse but still bad enough with an ankle injury I think.

    It appears that something actually broke on the boat and he had lost steering which is why he had no left or right control.

    Wasn't the rudder, the turn fin on the left side ripped off, he ended up turning right as a last ditch effort to steer away from the bar at the dock, and to try and broad side the impact instead of head on...... Region 10 rocks

    Wow does it take that long to shut down the engine? You hear the engine power down as soon as he gets in trouble, but he keeps on going like hell ...... and after the colision the engine still keeps going ..... was there a problem with shutting down or so?

      It's a turbine. They take forever to spool up and down. Example: the STP Special at Indy back in the 60's took two seconds to spool up during the corners. Basically foot on the gas two seconds before anyone else

      Haha!!! Too bad this thread dropped out of the race, there's a lot of potential for more smart comments. Here's one for ya right now: drink enough beer and things will tilt when you over indulge and toss your cookies on your girlfriend's and her pet miniature poodle dog or Pomeranian. It's ok though, she wants it that way because now she has an excuse to never go to the races again and she might even recommend hanging up the bottle for good. Trouble begins when she wants you to change and you aren't ready or vise versa. Women are a fickle bunch but they are fun to have around as long as they can kick it and not cause a sh¡t storm when there's more than 2 people in the same room with 'em. Life's too short to put up with mean women, or men for that matter. But from what I seen it's the females being the problem more often. I even had a cop tell me that. Coolest conversation ever had with a cop.

    APBA is as bad as NASCAR.. no more little guy racing. WHat happened to the T class, SS class Sk class Y class.. etc etc etc. Now only Unlimiteds. Maybe 2Ltr.. thats it ONLY BIG MONEY ALLOWED TO RACE.... I wont support that... Only the priviledged get to race...... Not the America I believe in......

      JJ your right APBA should be ashamed what they have done to the sport. ONLY the rich get to race under APBA.. so right man. What happened to the T class Y class SS , SK , outboards... Going to a "RACE" with only 5 boats entered. Same race 5 times........... BORING

    There is no rudder on these boats. Only thing in the water is the prop when they are running right.

    • @BertramTwentyEight
      @BertramTwentyEight 10 років тому +2

      Yes, it does have a rudder and a turn fin. You can clearly see the rudder on the aft facing camera.

    • @likmystk
      @likmystk 10 років тому

      BertramTwentyEight no there is a skid fin on the left side of the boat along with the rudder and prop when he was going into the turn the mounting brackets snapped off and the skid fin broke. he could still barely tun the boat to avoid going into a very short seawall and killing 100's of people

      I was going to ask if the steering broke after he skipped through the other boats wake because there was no controlling the boat after that, now I know from your answer.

    • @garryberry4784
      @garryberry4784 7 років тому

      The rudder is a relatively small metal blade that is located in a bracket extending from the transom at the right rear of the boat that acts to steer the boat through the corners. The rudder only becomes truly effective at higher race speeds and makes maneuvering at low speeds somewhat challenging. A water pickup at the base of the rudder feeds onboard cooling and lubrication systems.

    Driver error more than once. At 6:12 time line two boats are passing you, one on each side. Why did you not keep up with them? Was your boat that slow? You know the further ahead they get you will start to get their waves and at some point get squeezed out. If they can go that fast and not flip you should have been able to stay with them.Then at 7:08 because you did get squeezed out you decided to go into the inside lane which is taken by the lead boat who is ahead enough and is not hugging the markers. But now you decide to step on the gas and go like a bat out of hell and catch up which you should have done in the first place. So now you catch up with the first place boat's wake as he cuts in for the corners after all he is in the inside lane. I would have fired you as a driver on the spot. Sorry too many mistakes in a very short time.All started when you didn't man up and hold your lane when the two boats passed you.

      Man. You must be new at this.
      watch 50 or 60 races live
      spend several decades in the pits
      ...then you'll get an idea...
      Take that from someone involved.
      Since they drove IN THE BACK.

      I just watched this video and I 100% agree with Garry Berry....the guy should have kept up instead of falling back in the corner. I didn't even know this was a race so I just thought he was slowing down on purpose to prevent a wake. I was even thinking...is this guy trying to sink or break this boat??? I would have sped up to stay ahead of the wake then floored in in the straight aways...his boat couldn't corner without flat water very good.
