The Hydro appears to be much faster than the other boats. Forget about turns or how long the race is. I love the sound of that very fast hydro and I'm a outboard guy.

I was just out at the Hydro-Bowl in Dayton Ohio a couple days ago...( May 26, 2020) The Pieces of shit in Government Sunk the Boat Racing out there a couple of decades ago. The MONKEYS at the UNITED NATIONS in Rio in 1992, ultimately banned the CARBON....... Do those Monkeys know how to swim? Lets take them out for a short ride on a long lake.
Its too damn bad they did away with the Grand Prix class in the US, i liked them better than the unlimited boats back in the day just because of that sweet big block sound
They didn't necessarily do away with the class, they did away with the jobs that made it possible for a guy to afford such amazing toys, and to be able to afford dragging the team all over the country. Apples and oranges> Me and another guy went to a snowmobile race track, set up on Ice, and we were on dirt bikes. WE lapped the field every 2.5 laps. At a different lake, we were asked by a State Trooper if we would mind calling it a day. So many cars had stopped on the highway, that it was causing a traffic jam. My little 250 cc Yamaha would have easily beaten Hydroplanes up to about the 145 cubic inch Hydros, that ran on the same lake in summer time.( Dayton Hydro Bowl) Oh what fun. Take a torch with you, so you can warm up the cylinder and get the bike to start...lol. Our bikes put up a nice little ice rooster tail too.
The promotional value is great!!!!, to show how fast a GP really is, the little guys are going pretty fast compared to your general use boat. Maybe more of a handicap start. Great stuff, I would like to do this a San Diego Bayfair, Offshore vs. GP

Why was he running so wide, too? Totally changes the dynamic. A real test would be to run right on the bouys, and if the dumb F1 boats get in the way well just run 'em over.
not really, the white (annihilator 2) boat set the best time around the wanganui river that year (it is only 60 metres wide.....) he beat out some very fast f1's. This year he was beaten by a f1 by just under 1 second.
The race course greatly favored the big fat boat with the noisy car engine in it. F-1 boats usually race thru MUCH narrower corners, not big fat wide sweeping turns. If the course had ONE pin turns, the F-1 boats would eat that car engine powered boat alive! But that was neat to see. Thanks for posting.
Ya baby ....The supercharged Big Block Chevy picked off those wing dingers like they were tied to a tree. Don't forget the old American V8 will always bring it, and the sound of one is the most bitchen ass thing in motorsports 😉

Depends what you like. I have twin modded 4 liter v8 racing outboards (2 strokes) on my 25 ft. cougar tunnel, would not trade that sound for any big block-
Mark Tarver Yes indeed BUT there's a big difference. I think most will agree the sound of the blown BBC or Chrysler or Ford idling with that killer blower surge is gonna garner more attention than a "wing dinger/weedeater" motor 😁
Guy takes 2000 hp. And races boats with 200hp and only beats the back markers. He never got near the top boats. Champs would have handed him his butt for sure.

The difference between 120mph and 180mph, and the GP boat was taking extra wide turns, slowing down significantly.

U cant compare F1 boat whit Hydroplanes its like F1 cars vs Top fuel :). F1 300hp va hydro 2.500hp, F1 140mph hydro 205mph.
The only advantage the F1 would have is reliability, better Finnish rate
There was a mixture of f1 and f2 boats, the front one was an f1 tunnel and it was not one of the fastest f1's
Those big grand prix boats are more noise than speed.......and many of them never finish a race
