Great channel. My first ride in a military Jeep was in the summer of 1974 at Fort Knox, Ky. We (Army Military Police) used the Jeep in West Germany into the mid 1980’s. Keep up with the great videos…. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Nice, I worked on Ascension island and found in a buried Quonset hut a lot of old WWII Jeep and weapons carriers parts, sadly the place flooded out b4 I could remove everything It was a rare 100 year flood there, I did get enough out to get one of the few jeep's left on island running, stuff was still wrapped in heavy wax paper and cosmoline.

The cutaway engine is a very valuable resource! ... I'd love to see a full detailed video of it for future reference!
For example I had no idea replacement engines came with the starter and generator attached, or that they were wrapped up for long term storage or overseas shipping like that.

Yes they were. Most of these engines were shipped overseas to be used at the rebuilding depots. Towards the end of 44 the brass thought the war was going to last another 2 to 3 years.while the military were already assembling vehicles from motorcycles jeeps and larger.they shipped most of the vehicles in crates to fit more on ships.the GIs got so good at it that the brass decided to do it there instead of shipping them home.remember the subs were still active.

Yes I have, Tony at TS Autos had a crated engine which was, as you say, very interesting to look at as regard colours, this is when we found that the fuel pump was left unpainted, but I am sure, as with all production items, things changes as materials became difficult to source, they would not stop production just because a certain colour paint was not available, just paint the item with what was a close colour and available, but the crated engine is a good example to follow, a friend found hundred of crated engines in North Africa when he was in the RAF, no one really wanted them then, so they were just left there in their crates. @@nw8000; The RAF engines were, I think, for use with generators, which used that engine as a power source, that would have been in Ismalia, but many military outpost had stocks of engines which were abandoned as they were uneconomic to ship back, probably bought by local scrap dealers. Many Forklift trucks also used the same engine, and were run on bottled gas.

That is late war OD covered in cosmoline. When they prepped these for use, they washed them down with Diesel fuel to get the preservative grease/wax off. Cosmoline gives it a darker, glossy look.

I was the proud owner of a 1942 Ford Jeep in my youth. Ford built the majority of the Jeeps during WWII under contract to Willys Overland who didn't have the necessary capacity to produce the numbers required. I've seen video of a jeep in the wooden shipping crate just as they were shipped from Ford during the war. Thousands of crated jeeps were sold as surplus after the war. I presently own an 1977 M-151-A2 M.U.T.T. also built by Ford on an American General design.

Donald Price my first was a 1942 Ford Jeep I bought it in 1960 for $300 with a full aluminum cab with sliding windows. Wish I had it now. When I was in the Navy in 1954 at Davisville RI there was perhaps a 100 or more still stacked like cordwood. I had heard that they were being sold for $200 at that time in the crate. I don’t know if they were Jeep or Ford.

Donald Price, Willys built the majority of jeeps (around 360,000) under contract to the US army.. Ford built around 275,000 GPW’s under contract to the US army as the US government didn’t think Willys Overland had the capacity to fill all the contracts... incidentally GPW stands for G - Government contract, P - 80 inch wheelbase, W - Willys designed engine. The famous jeep 7 slot pressed steel grill was a Ford design.

That looks very much like the NOS engine the late Jeff Polidoro had in his collection (though who could tell... there were tens of thousands) and it has the same glossy paint. As I recall, it had a tag on in that indicated it was a late war/postwar REMAN. I have an image of what may be an earlier NOS engine that has an OD paint job, but if there were any indicators of age, I didn't record them. I can't see my '90s era slide well enough to read the tags on the Polidoro engine (one large red tag on the distributor side and a manila colored one on the carb side.

The only note of caution I'd give is that there is footage of MB's being painted on the Willys line. The whole engine is sprayed OD with covers placed over the generator etc.
As a crated engine, it clearly appears to be a darker shade. I think Wilson supplied all of the MB engines. The question to be answered, is "Was this engine supplied by Willys as a crated unit?" It's quite possible that all MB engines were sprayed on a separate production line (Ford definitely did this). Those that went in to MB chassis then got sprayed again.

I wonder if the engine was painted in a grey primer under the forrest green
I was just blessed to find a 1944 GPW motor that has MAYBE 1000 miles on it.
(Guy was tearing down a willys wagon and putting a V6 in it)
It's also in a dark forget green and there is grey primer visable on the back of the block around the rear main seal/crank shaft

It looks more like a satin finish. Those Jeeps were built so fast, that they didn't have time to waste looking for the right color paint. If it was green, it worked!

Very interesting, but I was wondering about the serial number on your replacement engine because I am considering a 1943 GPW that has what I've been told is also a replacement engine with the number 4LR105647 and I am wondering what year it might have been built.
