Yea, I watched it to in my childhood. The Soundtrack was an excellent masterpiece made by the late Shirley Walker. Locomotion on DirectTV was fun back then. They had a lot of short animations and several nice music people trying to remember which is which nowadays.
This film, along some other work of Mr. Gagné, inspired me throughout FX animation and is still one of my favorite subjects to animate! Thanx for posting this! Now I can truly appreciate the beauty! =D
First time I saw this was back on a Computer Animation compilation called Computer Animation Showcase. Was definitely an interesting collection but this one stood out to me the most for how beautiful, intense, and epic it was and it shocks me on how it still looks great even today.
Ive been trying to find this for so long! Thank you for remastering and posting it! I have fond memories of this on TV as a kid in the 90s but forgot its name and could never find anything on it.
Wow, that brings back some memories : ) Michel, back in those days I worked for CAS (Animo) mostly in Cambridge UK but in the states sometimes too, and I did meet you a few times. We often used to screen this film at demos and trade events around the world and it never failed to impress everybody we showed it to. I then worked for a couple of years for WBFA too (in LA, then London) helping them to use Animo on the first couple of features that used the system. It's great to see this again, but especially interesting to read your story above about how you've managed to get your film back. A classic tale of the film source proving to be more reliable than the data storage of the time. Anyway, I'm glad you've got it again, it's looking great. Best Wishes to you, Chris.
Thanks for posting this in 1080. I watched this for the first time on a 14.4k connection on a tiny little screen. Now I'm seeing details I never saw years ago. Still my favorite even now.
I remember watching this in here. I was like 9 or 10 years old when I watched it and it inspired me so much to become an animator. I’m 17 now also now an animator and I totally forgot about this gem. But now rewatching it, this should be my inspiration again. Love the smooth animation, love the effects, love the music, just love everything about this short. The animation kinda reminds me of Yoshinori Kanada’s work. If that’s what you’re going for, I'll give props for that; if not, still give props for that. This is just a great animated short that deserves more attention.
I remember first seeing this on the Space Channel in Canada, after one show ended but before the next started. I've been looking for it everywhere, thank you so much for uploading this!
I loved when Locomotion used to play this a decade and half ago. Great to be able to see in 1080p. Too bad hand drawn animation is not made like this anymore.
I love seeing the embryonic version of things I’m familiar with. Even just seeing a clip of this with no context, my first thought was that it looked like Space Jam and Dreamworks productions from the 90s. I never noticed until now how distinct that aesthetic is, and it all started here.
I can remember our animation teacher using this film as inspiration to aspire to this level of quality, and fluidity in our own work. I'm glad they were able to release an HD version last year, after so many years. The only thiing we had to work from was a pixelated as hell film, at a resolution of 320x240 XD
@deerythedeer @Wynand07 Can y'all not read? In the description he blatantly says that the entire thing was animated on paper. The only thing that Animo was used for was digital painting and composting.
Did you work on lilo and stitch?* What you said implies that there has been years of multiple lilo and stich movies, series, games etc. And it's not similar at all compared to anything else animated. You think it's similar because the characters at the start are vaguely similar to stitch, which is just hilariously idiotic. But makes sense since you can't understand basic grammar either.
Did Miguel gagne is the reencarnatión of ozamu tezzuca, naaa i just kidding, anyway continúe whit that imagination and recomend whatch animes to increase your inspiratión, bye.
This was absolutely worth going through the hassle of finding the original film and enhancing it in HD. It looks amazing in 1080p.
wow, from 95? Incredible. Hand drawn animation is sure missed theses days. It needs a comeback.
I saw this at your latest visit to Sheridan in 2012. Watching it again inspires me to get off youtube and get back to work. I'll do that now.
“They’re destined to battle for eternity”
I would like to thank Michel Gagne for uploading a classic in HD format, I grew up watching this and appreciated the wonders.
You're welcome. Glad you enjoy the film.
I watched this short animated for the first film in the late 1990s, in the latin american TV channel Locomotion (DirecTV). Amazing!
I just found this! I watched it on Locomotion and have been looking for this short for YEARS hahahaha!

Great to be able to see this like this. My old VHS version is looking pretty bad nowadays.
Thanks Michel.
The special effects animation is amazing... hats of to all the paper and pencil animators =)
I remember seeing this somewhere.
You can see where insanely twisted shadow planet got some of it´s art style.
Saw Michel Gagné in a conference today... this guy... this guy is a pure genius!
I remembered watching this on the Happy Tree Friends and Friends tv show on G4TV.
So great that this was recovered. Thank you Michael.
You're welcome!

Ok, that was just straight up AWESOME!

Wow! Thank you very much.
My Animation teacher told me to watch this, so cool.
Saw this eons ago, good to finally get it back in track :)
Still Awesome. You're now in the Animated Filmmakers playlist, Michel.
Big thanks for remastering it in HD, Michel! It looks beautiful! ^^
Wow. I first saw this when I was about 3, and it's STILL awesome!
Excelente despues de años que encuentro este gran corto :)
Beautiful! Saw this while I was in college, such a huge a inspiration. Glad to see you were able to recover it. Thanks for uploading it!

It looks amazing in HD.
This blew me away when I saw it in college. Super awesome to stumble across your booth at Comic Con in San Diego and pick up that VHS tape :)
I loved this and was really influenced by it at the time, nice find!!!
One of the best animated shorts I've seen. Really like the part when the yellow guy falls down into the hole then he grabs the red one down with him.
Wow. I can't believe I've never seen this before. It's freaking beautiful.
I just read about this short in Joseph Gilland's ELEMENTAL MAGIC: THE ART OF SPECIAL EFFECTS ANIMATION.
same here!
The animation is perfect!
indeed, it's soft like a puppy!
I loved when Locomotion used to play this a decade and half ago. Great to be able to see in 1080p. Too bad hand drawn animation is not made like this anymore.
It's interesting to know Locomotion launched this on TV.
That's until the Animaniacs revival on Hulu.
Stunning!
Awesome! And it looks amazing in HD!
I love seeing the embryonic version of things I’m familiar with.
Even just seeing a clip of this with no context, my first thought was that it looked like Space Jam and Dreamworks productions from the 90s. I never noticed until now how distinct that aesthetic is, and it all started here.

I hope he continues with this :D Not saying you must, just be awesome and I'll be very happy to see this.
What an amazing short. Can't wait to see your The Saga of Rex!!
Fantastic animation!
Awesome animation!
Amazing!
Damn. Way better than any modern animation can do nowadays.
Awesome just AWESOME!!!!!!!!
Amazing score from Shirley Walker
Locomotion!
I wish Michael Gagne would animate a His Dark Materials adaptation... I know that would just blow my mind, given the right budget and script.
¡Espectacular!
The animation is incredibly fluid, it's amazing !
I can't wait to play Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet :)
I had a DVD of this at one time....back when people owned DVDs, lol
The Music 10/10
Wow, I remembered the first time I saw this... I was like 10 or 11. Epic shit is epic.
God, I miss 2D cinematic animation...
I see that you love FX animation =) Good job here
+Michel Gagne Dude you're the Don Bluth of youtube!
Actually, where Don Bluth fails in science fiction, you excel.
Titan A.E. wasn't that bad
This is really cool. Hasbro is lucky to have you for the MLP movie
"the tapes were corrupted and no data could be extracted from them"
"High thermal stability" my ass.
Music by..........Shirley Walker(1945-2006)
@deerythedeer
@Wynand07
Can y'all not read? In the description he blatantly says that the entire thing was animated on paper. The only thing that Animo was used for was digital painting and composting.
good
@deerythedeer Most of it would be 2d and initially done on paper.
did you ever work on Lilo and Stitch? the animation is remarkably similar to this
Transformers
Did you work on lilo and stitch?*
What you said implies that there has been years of multiple lilo and stich movies, series, games etc.
And it's not similar at all compared to anything else animated. You think it's similar because the characters at the start are vaguely similar to stitch, which is just hilariously idiotic. But makes sense since you can't understand basic grammar either.
And that was all before he did Quest for Camelot, The Iron Giant and Osmosis Jones.
I'd like to see science disprove this excellent hypothesis
@JackFost777 too bad it isn't for PC
man I swear this was shown with a movie, but what was it?
it look better in 1.25 speed
I just watched it that way, and I think you might be right. :)
He should have used red and blue
Red negative atom landing on a blue positive atom and both got into a fight
Where do you get the inspiration?
Alien Hominid ?
What is this I don't even
The character animation is very mushy and I cannot feel the weight of any impacts.
Thanks, I'll try to do better next time.
Michel Gagne I'm not an animator myself, but I can tell you that the keys are fine, even though they could be timed better.
Did Miguel gagne is the reencarnatión of ozamu tezzuca, naaa i just kidding, anyway continúe whit that imagination and recomend whatch animes to increase your inspiratión, bye.
The animation looks a lot like “quest for Camelot” and some others
