Cary Grant is one of my personal style icons, along with other actors from the Golden Age. Thank you Preston and the rest of the Gentleman's Gazette staff and I hope this shapes up to be a great series in the future!
Another element to consider is fitness. Grant looked great in anything he wore because he took care to stay fit and relatively trim throughout his life. A man with broad shoulders and a trim waistline will look better in a cheap suit than a fat guy in a tailored garment every time. Good grooming is also essential. Thanks for another informative video!
To some extend you're right. But an ill fitted suit (or any ill fitted outfit for that matter) can make even the greatest physics look bad. Just like a well fitting suit can make a "big" guy look slimmer or a skinny guy look more muscular.
Grant was fit and trim, but man, they weren't much into weight training back then. Unless you were Steve Reeves and Grant was no Steve Reeves. Not impressive deltoid or latissimus Dorsi development by today's standards. I noticed the same thing about Jimmy Stewart.
I just heard that his wife, Diane Canon, said he never worked out/exercised. If he started to gain weight, he'd go back on salads till he slimed down again. He should have weight trained. His suits fit him like they were on a hanger.
Great video. The following is what I did. In my early 30s, I went to Brooks Bros. The company has a semi-custom shop. This means that whatever is on the rack can be made out of NY to FIT YOU. You can also choose better materials. I would choose two and sometimes three pair of pants. I would also chose functional button holes. You could also delete what you didn't want. I run a bit warmer than most people, so I would eliminate the vest and also save money. You don't constantly dry clean. You press and air! Every repair was done immediately. Shoes were from Church's shoes until it went out of business. Multiple pair of the same business shoes. Also shinned and in repair. I still have suits that are 30 years old and appear new. Quality and fit never go out of style.
Favorite Cary Grant film - To Catch a Thief. I particularly like his wardrobe in this film, including the neck scarves and sweaters. Also, love the car!
Funnily enough, I live in Bristol, just close to where Cary Grant/ Archie Leach grew up; I was talking to an older gentleman in a waiting room where Cary Grant came into the conversation... Yes he had a simple and elegant style.
I really appreciate this video and hope this is the beginning of a series highlighting giants of classic mens style. As someone whose 78 rpm record and Classic Film collecting spilled over into collecting vintage clothes as well, this was an extremely exciting notification. I've been watching this channel for three years now and am delighted to see it grow in subscribers and content. Keep up the great work!
Please make more of these! This is one of your best video ideas. There are really no channels that talk about the style of the classic Hollywood celebrities. Personally, I would really like to see some "How to dress like Vincent Price/Errol Flynn" videos. Great work!
I loved his wardrobe most in “Charade” & “North By Northwest,” particularly his use of the tank watch. I can’t help but always think of him when I think of that watch.
LOVED this video!!!... Cary Grant is definitely one of my BIGGEST style icons, as well as the mentioned Douglas Fairbanks and others like his son Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Gary Cooper, Fred Astaire, Errol Flynn and Robert Taylor!!! MORE LIKE THIS, PLEASE! ;)
@@lemonysnicket3153 I would argue against that, on the Graham Norton show he wore this beautifully tailored mid-grey suit, and although it’s not him, he is generally well-dressed in most of his roles.
I am no clothes hound (that is a massive understatement) and I was not a particular fan of Cary Grant, although I respected him and enjoyed his understated style of humor. I will admit however, that they guy really knew how to dress and how to carry himself. He was the consummate professional. We could all learn from Cary Grant when it comes to style.
Excellent video and presentation by Preston! Cary Grant was one of the most elegant actors that graced the screen. I would like to recommend a superb film where he did not play the usual, light-hearted but rather shallow charming guy, but a rather evil rake. I am referring to "Suspicion" (1941)
I watched That Touch of Mink a few days ago and particularly liked the scenes when Philip Shayne (Grant) would walk into his office, remove his suit coat, and put on a cardigan. I just purchased a navy blue cashmere cardigan vest to be able to do the same. Mandatory working from home due to Covid-19 is getting old.
I appreciate this video so much, I've always been curious about Grant's wardrobe/fashion style (but I personally do not know much about this, nor can I afford to), this is the best video I've seen regarding the subject. Grant's also my favorite actor of all time and my favorite movie is Charade.
MY #1 style icon!! I would love to see a video on the style breakdown of Steve McQueen (Especially his looks in 'Bullitt' 'The Thomas Crown Affair' & 'The Getaway')...
My favorite bit of inspiration from Cary Grant's sense of style? Not following current fads - opting for style over fashion. Today's fashion, at least as far as men's fashion is concerned, is a bit too tight. I personally wear "slim" clothing, but most critics obsessed with current fashion seem to gravitate toward almost skin tight clothes, rather than just slim cuts. In my opinion, they look more like trapeze artists than gentlemen. I am confident that my choices are much closer in line with what Cary Grant would be wearing today than those current "experts" on today's men's fashion.
Brilliant! Cary Grant is certainly my style icon. Perhaps black Oxfords would've been better for your outfit, but otherwise is a great clip that should be shared widely. Men need to watch this.
He only dressed well in the Bonds due to the director Terence Young taking him to a Saville Row tailor. Not being a regular suit wearer he makes the faux pas of buttoning both of the 2 buttons on his jackets a few times. His personal style varied wildly and can be seen wearing some dreadful clothes!
@Andrew Lamb- you are correct. In fact Ian Fleming looked at him as some sort of barbarian. Terence young civilized him in to the role and taught him the etiquette of a post war gentleman beyond even the role.
Please please please make this a series!!! With Gary Cooper, Jimmy Stewart, Frank Sinatra, Steve McQueen and Humphrey Bogart as the next subjects! To answer your question of “what did I take away from Mr. Grant”, the answer to that is quite simple.....keep it simple and classic. Thanks again!!!!👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Nice job fellas. Love to see you stretch yourselves and do a video on the style of Steve McQueen. Baracuta Harrington, desert boots and jeans, to perfectly tailored suits. The King of Cool created a style for the latter half of the twentieth century.
My late Grandfather Arthur Lyons was his personal tailor in Savile Row at Kilgour,French and Stanbury . Arthur made the Grey suit from North by northwest. Derek
Excellent! My favorite movie with Cary Grant is "To Catch A Thief". I like his clothing and especially shoes in that movie, it's very romantic and Grace Kelly melted in his arms!:)
The two performances that stand out for me are His Girl Friday and North By Northwest. The former a fast-paced comedy in his peak, the latter in his phase of eminance grise.
Preston super!!! You can be a gentleman in sweatpants or a slob in a suit. Same with a woman like me you can take the girl out of Paris but you can’t take Paris out of the girl. Preston I love your outfit
Great video. I've been a fan of Cary Grant, both as an actor and as a model of classically sophisticated style, since my youth (which was long ago). As with Grant, I have a tall, relatively slender build, and therefore, like Grant, I can often buy "off-the-rack" clothing that fits me very well. A key point, I think, is that Grant found ways to adapt elements of classic style to his individual physique and persona. I attempt to do the same. As I lack Grant's full head of hair, I'm much more into hats than was he. I've a decent collection of fedoras and flat caps. Also, as I'm slightly less handsome and charismatic than was Grant, I tend toward bit bolder ties and accessories than did he. But, he is certainly an icon that influences my choices. One amazing thing about the movie North by Northwest is that Grant wears one simple gray suit throughout most of the film and makes it look stylishly appropriate in a variety of very different scenes. I can think of several other mid-twenty century or contemporary film stars who fashion choices might be worth a video: Fred Astaire, Gary Cooper, George Clooney and Denzel Washington come immediately to mind.
Great video! I have always enjoyed Cary Grant's films and believe he was a good looking guy. However, I have never considered him a style icon. But now your video has caused me to see him in a new light. Gene Kelly is a celebrity from that era that I also believe had a great sense of style as well.
Very well done and a great way of introducing 'dressing well' by highlighting the style icons of classic and modern cinema! And who would not of wanted to be 'Cary Grant' in the day? it is said that even Cary Grant wanted to be Cary Grant ! Again, carry on with this theme.
He's both classy and elegant in everything he wore. He exuded class without saying a word. Sean Connery did much the same in his James Bond roles. When you see a man dressed similarly now days, it's very much noticed.
Enjoyed this video very much as such Cary Grant is one gentleman I have tried to fashion myself after when it comes to my personal appreciate the helpful tips which can help to improve one's own sense of style I too would like to be seen as a gentleman who "wears the clothes and not the clothes wearing the man" thanks for this truly insightful video!
Very nice video. I really like this concept of reviewing the personal style of various famous figures. I hope there will be more videos like this in the future.
Talking about buying inexpensive, off-the-rack jackets made from lower quality materials, I just found a corduroy sport coat, second hand, and the fit is impeccable.

Cary's Hitchcock movies were excellent. I like the 'no belt' approach. I think a few important elements to Cary's clothes were a) generous cut around shoulders and neck; b) the cut of the pants to provide a sleek silhouette ; and, c) the walk and his manner in how he held himself.
Being a weight lifter for years i used to get athletic suits no longer available. MTM and than bespoke have made a world of difference. Better quality in all my clothes and fit are key.
Excellent style dissection! He was always very fussy about his cuff length, at least at J. Press. Ps any chance to do a mens' neckerchief video? How do you think he tied the one at 11:20?
His most famous quote: "Everyone wants to be Cary Grant. Even I want to be Cary Grant".
Yes, I love that quote!😁
Because Cary Grant wasn’t his real name
Cary Grant is one of my personal style icons, along with other actors from the Golden Age. Thank you Preston and the rest of the Gentleman's Gazette staff and I hope this shapes up to be a great series in the future!
This is a superb and unique idea for a series idea. Clint Eastwood in Dirty Harry is also another classic, who I believe rocked tweed on screen.
I noticed that. The fit was amazing.
Julian Camilleri that’s right! And Steve McQueen, the king of cool.
Guys show the man some love! Great job Preston you seem as passionate as Raphael about menswear!
This is the best example of men's style that never dies. Trends die, classics always live forever...
It's funny how even being a girl, I've improved considerably by following the advise on this site
@SPNKr no ... thanks, but I'm fine being a princess , you may want to try it too, it's really funny
@SPNKr I know it's a joke, almost everything that happens on the internet is... as well as my social life, but that's a story for other time
Carol lol I love this channel too used to work at a prominent men’s clothing store and adored it. Nice dressing men ohh la la gets me

@Julius Songling no, not really. what he said is: "well fitting clothes are a requirement".
@@Floorockous He wasn't referring to an ill-fitting suit but rather a cheap suit.

Cary Grant was complete CLASS!
Favorite Cary Grant film - To Catch a Thief. I particularly like his wardrobe in this film, including the neck scarves and sweaters. Also, love the car!
Also how graceful we was in all his moves. If you watch it again see how he moves like a cat all the time in his way reminding us that he was a thief.
Grace Kelly was the most beautiful part of that film. To Catch a Thief was so stylish and classy.
Cary Grant is definitely an incredible reference of men’s style! I’ll be adding some extra pocket squares in white to my rotation now.
Humphrey Bogart?🙏

Probably my favourite episode of Gentlemans' Gazette. Well said: he wore the clothes, not the other way around.
"A well tailored suit is to women what lingerie is to men." - H.M. Cole
Yeeeah, I tried dressing in lingerie once... the consensus was that I should stick to suits... unless my wife needs a laugh...
My favorite movie is An Affair to Remember. I thought Mr. Grant dressed impeccably. So dapper and clean. His personality and features shined through.

Great video as always GG! I’d love to see a similar video like this about Frank Sinatra! :D
I’ve always thought for Carey Grant was the ultimate go-to for timeless style and I think key to that is understatement.
Mr. Grant was far from putting lipstick on a pig... He had stunningly hansom good looks, so no matter what he wore he looked GREAT!
*Tastefully understated... the classics never go out of style, thanks for the reminder!*

Brooks brothers, and the best example of New England preppy.
Most definitely! Humphrey Bogart, Sean Connery and Ryan Gosling would also be great candidates.

Douglas Fairbanks, Noel Coward, Edith Head, and British Royalty. His good friend was Lord Mountbatten as well.

One thing people don't mention is his hair, which is such an essential part of his looks and really can't be mimicked by most of us lesser mortals
