I've taught myself how to use a scythe and carry one in the back of my truck. It's great exercise too. You can take down large weeds and brush if you keep it sharp and you can test spots by just scything a small strip then detect it. Great video I'm subscribing.

My dad bought a Whites detector with all of the coils back in 1965. He soon focused on coin hunting and within a couple of years, he filled 2 1/2 coffee cans with coins. I don't know about permissions because I was very young, but we traveled around Northern Minnesota combing county fairgrounds. One time we saw a square sawdust layer where a concession had been. All of a sudden, he jumped for joy like I had never seen. He found a roll of quarters in the sawdust.
Good stuff. I am just getting started in detecting and since it's frozen right now, I am doing my research. I recently learned about GAIA GPS and I am finding some great old spots in PA where I live. I have a lot of the ideas you mentioned indicted on my map. Cannot wait to get started. Your channel is among the best I have seen.

I haven't done well yet at these places yet but I hope to find something unique. In Southern California we had Winerys, most of them are being bulldozed for new construction and I have been exploring these areas. The last place I went to I found a spot that was bulldozed over and knew it probably had a structure on it. As I was swinging my EQ 800 a truck pulled up and an older guy ask me what I was doing. I explained and he told me that the property used to be his Grandparents, they started in 1916. He pointed out where the barn was and the house The grapes they grew were Zinfandel grape primarily. So much metal in the ground but i will be back, its a 20 min drive from my house.
It’s so fun to get a history lesson from an owner or someone who grew up on a property. The gist of this video is to try and focus in on places where large groups gathered temporarily. In 1989 I found 23 20 dollar gold pieces in an abandon canal turnaround. The canal is one of the first transportation and trade transit canals in America. It is the BLACKSTONE CANAL in Massachusetts in Uxbridge. I used a Garrett groundhog detector with a 8" co-axial coil waterproofed. I found them under 3' of stagnant water in 9" of muck. I used a snorkel mask snorkel and a hand garden pronged cultivator. I spent 3 full days looking for more after the strike. The sovereigns date from 1841-1847. I never told no one and still have them in my extensive coin collection found metal detecting. I detect ghost towns out west I detect the high arid deserts for artifacts coins gold nuggets and meteorites that I sell of EBAY to the highest bidder.

I am from Nor Cal and have detected around Downieville a bit but now I live in Long Beach. I head out to the desert and hit old train depots that are long gone and also the stops. There were stops in the desert every 10 miles where they’d refill water for the steam engines. We do really well at these just like you mentioned and in our last trip, found an 1877 Seated Dime.
Don't you just live how everything in the desert is still just sitting right there on top or shallow? Must be so many stops out there that have never been detected 🤔 Thank you for your view and comment!
I have been hunting a 27 acre field that the college owns and have been finding a bunch of silver coins, a couple of gold rings, etc. When they tore down the old high school they hauled all the dirt there. Also projects from the city that needed a place to haul off dirt went here. They recently scraped it and smoothed it out, and of course I was the first one there. I am nowhere near done hunting it yet. Winter showed up and put a stop to things here. There is another property owned by the school district where dirt has been hauled for a long time. It hasn't been scraped yet but I watch it close. :)

That's why I don't understand why so many don't like fill dirt. In many cities and towns when they dug one spot for a construction project they would haul it to another or store it in a field to later be used somewhere else. Some of my favorite hunting.
It is some of my favorite hunting now too. The city is getting ready to tear up a big section of one of our parks where the swimming pool is located. The pool is 102 years old now. They will build a new one in a section of the park. I asked our Mayor if they couldn't haul all the dirt from the new site out to this field and spread it around. It is the closest site to the park so hopefully he will do that. :)
@@kellystewart8360 That's cool, I have followed the dump trucks to see where the dump construction tearouts and I hunt them if they are on public land. Of course they are huge piles it's difficult and you only get to hunt the outer layers of the piles but I keep an eye on them and as soon as some disappears I watch where they haul it to and hit it again when they spread it out on a new project. Yes if you live in an area that has Packrats or Woodrats they love to collect shiny items. I can't stress enough how many of these animals have existed in the last 200 years and how many nests they have lined with shiny metal items they have collected. As a test when we were kids we put just shiny items in a live trap and it worked to catch packrats without using any food.
Nice video on giving us ideas for where to hunt. I especially like the river boat idea since I recently moved to Rio Vista, Ca and there is a lot of history in the area. I have noticed several sites which has old pilings near the shore obviously a place where river boats stopped and a place to hunt. Also look for a group of trees which seems out of place where a house could have once stood.
Wow Steve, you are centrally located in right in the heart of all the best parts of the Delta system as the paddle boats and Steamers came right up your channel underneath the Rio Vista bridge in fact one of the halls of a famous steamship that had a boiler explosion is visible while on the bridge looking North on the East Bank. You can take the ferry out to the island as well and there are landings everywhere around you. Probably not much left to do downtown Rio Vista anymore but if you venture into the waterways you will do very well! Lmk if you ever want to team up on a hunt or two! Mornin Mark. All good spots to hunt. Actually working on researching fords on the Mokelumne River. Many are under water now but there are still a few out there. I’d like to add old baseball fields to the list. I found one from the 20’s till who knows when. A buddy’s grandmother told me about it. She used to play ball there as a child. Yes!! Old sporting grounds and baseball for sure! May be no sign today at all where there may have been a baseball field back in the day. River fords are another great idea. An incredible find of half dollars at an old river crossing launched the career of aquachigger and his detecting channel. Many other spills like this have been found. There are even stories about gold coins being dropped into the river at crossings when wagons or stages tipped or floated away. Train Stop was my area I did well with. 1912 Barber Dime, ‘28 Buffalo Nickel and ‘42 Merc. I appreciate this video and gave me some ideas for future research and hunts.

Great ideas Mark. I’m sure many have already thought of this, but using historical maps in Gaia GPS is a great way to see what your town looked like long ago.
Hi Mark I've just got a x terra pro for Xmas, in my part of Wales there is a lot of beaches, could you please tell me what your setting would be for a beach 🤔👍
I would use the stock program for beach with your recovery speed at 1..But if you want to focus on jewelry or if your sand is not too salty you can use the program called Field 2 and make sure frequency is at 15 kHz recovery speed at 1. If beach is real trashy raise recovery speed up to 2. Lastly keep an eye on your sensitivity, this machine with the stock quote can get a little chatty past 19 you might have to back it all the way down to 17 to get it to be real stable. Great advice I live in eastern ct and hunt the Ct river tons of history one spot had over 100 silver coins halves quarters Spanish silver all the way back to 1652pine tree shilling! Mostly silver coins very few clad or Pennie’s Coins were literally under rocks on the surface to!
Yes that's been my experience too. The coins are still there even though the river rages occasionally I'm always shocked to see the coins still sitting at The crossings and gathering areas. Ghost towns, ancient casinos and gambling houses, Curvy winding roads... Many of the really winding roads were originally deer trails that eventually became Indian trails that eventually became wagon trails, then eventually were paved and used by cars.
Been to most of these. Here in S.W. Missouri, most of your suggestions were not done. But if you "go with the flow" in your area, you can come up with things that were popular in your area, tent revivals, rodeos, Sunday after church picnic gatherings, etc.
The Springs up a good point these tips are not for everybody as a lots of these things didn't happen in some areas of the country. But if anything it can help to open your mind to other ideas. Thank you for the view, tips and comment!
I find stuff all the time because most older detectorist only dig high tones looking for silver who are the first ones in a place. If you like gold dig copper signals

Old drive In movie lots and old rest stops along the highways. They may be littered with trash, but if you know your machine’s language, you will probably do well. Also, festival fairgrounds. Great idea video. _/ 👍🏻
It always amazes me when an experienced detectorist gives away, with todays information highway, sites nationwide. Sincere devaluation of ones own knowledge, something successful investors, inventors, innovators, etc refrain. Nothing like shooting oneself in the foot with equations of virgin sites and US population at 345 million. Have seen it here, old sites which could keep on giving, strip mined by novel detectorists and mess left behind. No worries, you'll see it.
This video is for all of those detectorists that buy a new, pricey machine and are passionate about the history and excited for the chance to dig something really cool. They come to me to tell me they are only finding nails and aluminum can parts or pull tabs, wondering how we find all of the types of relics, coins and gold that we do. I speak at lots of treasure hunting and metal detecting clubs across the Western USA and this is a majority of everyone in the room in these clubs. As an ambassador of this hobby and a representative of a major metal detecting brand I am on the educational side of this hobby. Fostering good techniques, good morals and etiquette and trying to help my fellow hobbyist rather than the keeping my lips sealed approach. I have been absolutely blessed with so many mind blowing, incredible finds that I sleep good at night knowing that I don't take any of those finds for granted and try to give back in appreciation for my fortunate experiences. My problem is the county I live in frowns on metal detecting. I have called the county for permission but they always push you off or don't answer. As for old schools and home sites, the national forest controls a large area and doesn't allow detecting except on their campsites. The funny part is my family and extended family owned many of the sites I know about. Oh well, I keep trying.
SLC people should check out a park near the 30's (south) It was a Board Track motorcycle racing.high banked made of wood. Very dangerous. people died racing there.
Two of the best spots I’ve found were ww2 training camps, one was at the bottom of the lake and after our drought it became accessible. Pulled 100’s of coins, buttons, silver pins and everything ww2 related. Under water now 😢

@ you know this was about 4 years ago and I did take some short clips but never turned them into a video. I believe they are still on my page but as far as a clip of everything found I kinda slacked on it. I think I answered you on a different video comment but there really is no option to detect an area that is covered in shell casings especially at a gun range where you have different size shell casings that all sounds so good on the machine and cover the entire length of the visual ID numbers. Absolutely, should have mentioned old maps but some of these tips like the Circus or Exhibition Boxing is not going to be on a map. I think doing research is a complete waste of time, Everyone will tell you about research, google maps is the only thing you need, Everyone I know with a detector goes on about research yet they go through a site and thousands of people have been there before them, Think outside the box.. and compare old maps overlapping new maps. You’ll soon be hitting treasure that others would be jealous about
I have been detecting for nearly the same and it is definitely tough to get permissions in these days of laws, rules and litigation. Everyone is worried about getting sued. But there are still so many that will give permission too. Thank you for your view and comment!

One place to find stuff you don't mention. (anywhere) Where do people go to lose their money? (anywhere) Love the tube videos of $2,000 detectors and they post the "Tot lot" hunts. I've been at it 44 years, I still get people telling me the local park has to be good as if people haven't been hunting it for 50 years. I guess people must like zinc pennies. Point is 90% of detectorists are dreamers. I must say those closet Queen detectors are cheap to buy from them. Where do I hunt (Right in the middle of civil war camps) People have been losing coins/relics for over 300 years. Haven't dug a clad coin, Well I can't remember when last I did.

The Sacramento river delta has been kind to me so far. Would love to take a week and go back and hunt back home in WV.

Great ideas Mark. I’m sure many have already thought of this, but using historical maps in Gaia GPS is a great way to see what your town looked like long ago.

Hi Mark I've just got a x terra pro for Xmas, in my part of Wales there is a lot of beaches, could you please tell me what your setting would be for a beach 🤔👍
I would use the stock program for beach with your recovery speed at 1..But if you want to focus on jewelry or if your sand is not too salty you can use the program called Field 2 and make sure frequency is at 15 kHz recovery speed at 1. If beach is real trashy raise recovery speed up to 2. Lastly keep an eye on your sensitivity, this machine with the stock quote can get a little chatty past 19 you might have to back it all the way down to 17 to get it to be real stable. Great advice I live in eastern ct and hunt the Ct river tons of history one spot had over 100 silver coins halves quarters Spanish silver all the way back to 1652pine tree shilling! Mostly silver coins very few clad or Pennie’s Coins were literally under rocks on the surface to!
Yes that's been my experience too. The coins are still there even though the river rages occasionally I'm always shocked to see the coins still sitting at The crossings and gathering areas. Ghost towns, ancient casinos and gambling houses, Curvy winding roads... Many of the really winding roads were originally deer trails that eventually became Indian trails that eventually became wagon trails, then eventually were paved and used by cars.

Been to most of these. Here in S.W. Missouri, most of your suggestions were not done. But if you "go with the flow" in your area, you can come up with things that were popular in your area, tent revivals, rodeos, Sunday after church picnic gatherings, etc.
The Springs up a good point these tips are not for everybody as a lots of these things didn't happen in some areas of the country. But if anything it can help to open your mind to other ideas. Thank you for the view, tips and comment!

I find stuff all the time because most older detectorist only dig high tones looking for silver who are the first ones in a place. If you like gold dig copper signals

Old drive In movie lots and old rest stops along the highways. They may be littered with trash, but if you know your machine’s language, you will probably do well. Also, festival fairgrounds. Great idea video. _/ 👍🏻

It always amazes me when an experienced detectorist gives away, with todays information highway, sites nationwide.
Sincere devaluation of ones own knowledge, something successful investors, inventors, innovators, etc refrain.

Fostering good techniques, good morals and etiquette and trying to help my fellow hobbyist rather than the keeping my lips sealed approach. My problem is the county I live in frowns on metal detecting. I have called the county for permission but they always push you off or don't answer. As for old schools and home sites, the national forest controls a large area and doesn't allow detecting except on their campsites. The funny part is my family and extended family owned many of the sites I know about. Oh well, I keep trying.

SLC people should check out a park near the 30's (south) It was a Board Track motorcycle racing.high banked made of wood. Very dangerous. people died racing there.

Two of the best spots I’ve found were ww2 training camps, one was at the bottom of the lake and after our drought it became accessible. Pulled 100’s of coins, buttons, silver pins and everything ww2 related. Under water now 😢

@ you know this was about 4 years ago and I did take some short clips but never turned them into a video. I believe they are still on my page but as far as a clip of everything found I kinda slacked on it. We own land that used to be a gun range and I know people that own expensive guns have jewelry the problem is too many shell casings any thoughts
I think I answered you on a different video comment but there really is no option to detect an area that is covered in shell casings especially at a gun range where you have different size shell casings that all sounds so good on the machine and cover the entire length of the visual ID numbers. Absolutely, should have mentioned old maps but some of these tips like the Circus or Exhibition Boxing is not going to be on a map. Metal detecting for 40 years,unfortunately many good places are private property now,and owners say no when asked for permission
I have been detecting for nearly the same and it is definitely tough to get permissions in these days of laws, rules and litigation. Everyone is worried about getting sued. But there are still so many that will give permission too. Thank you for your view and comment!

One place to find stuff you don't mention. (anywhere) Where do people go to lose their money? (anywhere) Love the tube videos of $2,000 detectors and they post the "Tot lot" hunts. I've been at it 44 years, I still get people telling me the local park has to be good as if people haven't been hunting it for 50 years. I guess people must like zinc pennies. Point is 90% of detectorists are dreamers. I must say those closet Queen detectors are cheap to buy from them. Where do I hunt (Right in the middle of civil war camps) People have been losing coins/relics for over 300 years. Haven't dug a clad coin, Well I can't remember when last I did.
