You will find the area where the stumps were, they will settle and sink over the next few years. I had three oak tree stumps ground in my front yard five years ago and am still filling with dirt as it sinks when the stumps rot. Good video and you did very well using the grinder the first time.

You might want to invest in one of those really large magnets to sweep over the ground to find all the hidden metal.

Actually, that is an coming project. I have some magnets that came out of some industrial machine. They are about 4"x6" magnet and 1" thick. And I have 4 or 5 of them. They will make a great pick up took.

When we bought our place 10 years ago, it seemed like the folks who owned it before us just threw car parts all over the yard. We found brake pads, springs, pulleys, whatever. Our area is largely sandy soil, and every time it rained, I would find something new. Amazing how little foresight some people have.

I bought a "me powered" stump grinder around 2 years ago. It does the job pretty much the same way as that machine, but man is it a workout! I dig out the smaller stumps with my backhoe and just grind the larger ones. I estimate that my machine has pretty much paid for itself from the number of stumps I have cut up not to mention my good friend also using it around his place.

Good job grinding out the stumps with the rental! I am surprised they don't send replacement teeth with the unit to replace broken teeth. I would do as Bert suggested, remove all wood chips from the area to give yourself a solid base, otherwise when the chips decay they will leave a depression in the surface that will have to be filled in later.

I would love to be able to use a stump grinder. The family before me planted a White Oak tree..then promptly built a chain link fence right next to it so of course it absorbed the fence post and chain link fencing into the stump I'm trying to remove. It won't burn with any good effect, and it destroys chain saw chains, recip saw blades, axe edges...grand fun. That stump has to go away so I can put in a workshop exactly where it is. that is the only place available I have for such a building. It's been a big stupid delay.

I have twice rented stump grinders. Third time I got a quote from a private contractor and the quote was cheaper than renting and I didnt have to do the work. The contractor got the job done in a fraction of the time it would have taken me. Get a quote from a professional next time. You might be pleasantly surprised.

We discovered our yard was a metal graveyard last year when tilling a new garden location. Thankfully, our tiller didn't end up broke. Funny thing, every time it rained, pieces of broke glass would appear in our garden. I can only imagine what we would find while digging with a backhoe. Great video as always!

Just popped in seen this video in my suggested videos and thought I'd see how the Vermeer stump grinder did. I own a Rayco with a 27hp engine and do stumps for a living. I must say you did a good job for never running one before. I've seen video of people renting machine and just cringed watching them. As far as the tooth breaking probably wasn't your fault but it look like you were grinding top of the stump instead from the side. Could have had something to do with it maybe. But good job anyways.

Burning them (saw your other video) is so much better. Just use charcoal and get it hot. Ideally start getting charcoal inside holes you drill or slits you cut in the stump. Keep in mind if you burn a stump it won't rot underground creating a sinkhole that grinding them will eventually create. If you just want a stump below ground just dig a hole around it and cut it below ground with a junk chain saw or sawzall (if small enough). This creates the same issue as the stump grinder though: the underground stump will eventually rot and sink into the ground causing a sinkhole.

Where I live in Europe the insect population is down to next to nothing. I left the windows open day and night all last summer and we counted two flies that came in! 2 Flies in a whole summer! To save the insects they use a back hoe to dig around a stump and then pull it out of its hole and leave it sit next to the hole for 2 weeks. This way, all the insects have the time to leave their former home and crawl back in the hole. Then they take the stump away and push the dirt back to fill in the hole. Then they let it settle for two weeks before finally leveling it off and re-seeding with grass. In summer, they cut down the weeds and leave them where they cut them for a week or so, this way the bugs and insects can find new plants to live on. In neighboring Germany, they are down 75% of insects in the last 20 years. Boys and girls, something very strange is going on. We've got to save insects.

I would remove all those grindings and soil to a pile on the side. Then bring the site back up to grade with road base or gravel. Later you could screen the pile of mixed material through a 2" heavy gauge hardware cloth. This would be a great soil amendment material for a garden bed as most petroleum products have already leached into the ground or been consumed by the soil bacteria. And a lousy base for a parking pad. A $175 well spent if you put any value on your time. Even though trying to burn out the stump did get rid of a lot of garbage wood and made wood ash for the amendment mix pile.
    the old guy Bert
