Hi Sean! As a Monstera deliciosa collector, I really enjoyed this video even though I knew almost all of the varieties already. It's great to get some background info like where they came from but also more precise descriptions that a single picture or video can't convey (like the fact that new leaves emerge a certain colour but turn a different colour when they harden). These are the details that will allow us to differenciate between the ever-increasing number of varieties that are flooding the market at the moment. I'm thankful that awareness around mutations is making more and more people collect them instead of them being tossed into compost but I wish that the prices overseas were more reasonable. I'm in Canada and usually find variegated large-form Monsteras for around $60-$200 from local sellers, most of them are sports with no name. The most expensive ones are imports and range from $500 to $2000 but there aren't many people who are ready to pay that much for a plant around here. Tropical plant collecting is a hobby that's most popular in the lower to medium classes while rich people usually find a different specific niche of plants to collect.
Thank you for bringing us all these new plants that we would otherwise never see. And also for introducing us to all of these interesting plant hybridizers and collectors. ❤😊
Hi Sean you’re actually my inspiration in doing youtube because I don’t really have an avenue of sharing my love for plants. I am on the budget side of things thu so my collection is a little conservative. I’m really happy that we share the same love for plants and I learned so much from you. Thank you! Much love from the Philippines
Thank you so much. This is sweet. Im not sure if you noticed but I am also quite limited budget for plants compared to most people I come across. Its nice to grow the collection sustainably ❤️
I was at the International Adroit Society Expo and heard and saw great talks about how these varieties were discovered names. The differences may be subtle but they are definitely authentic. Naming them is similar to names of culinary dished discovered or created.
No as easy as you make it sound, there's lots of work done and lots and lots of time spent before a name is given. I don't agree with all these silly names but who am I to say, I do believe everyone wished they could create their own variety though, is fun playing with genes but time gets in the way.
I am with you in that I cannot see the difference between some of the variegated ones….. but there are several that are really really beautiful and unique like the Monstera Devil. I have a deliciosa and a thai constellation. Would like the Devil…. Maybe in 20 years the price will be affordable.😅
@@lindaschad9734 Yea alot of monsteras have been going up in price like crazy. Kind of reminds me when the obliqua came on the market they were going for hundreds if not thousands and now you can get them for $40 lmao. Monstera Devil's backstory is so fascinating! At first glance it's hard to imagine how such a plant exists, but then after hearing the backstory you realize that it was a step by step process of selecting cuttings and careful cultivation. Amazing. Love this information dense content.
This information is very amazing interesting! I never even knew there were some many different varieties! We bought a small variety today! Seen the Vietnamese monstera today ..beautiful.. Seen you today but you were busy filming didn't want to bother you. Thanks for great content and information
I still think Thai Cons are the best looking and it’s great that they’re stable. Some of these new types are fine but the price tags really turn me off. I mean, I think most of us learned that all of these will drop in price significantly if we’re patient.
Great all inclusive compilation of different varieties of variegated Monsteras! With all the current and upcoming varieties for the market it can get very confusing. Your video simplifies much of that defining each one clearly and I am sure you have created a nice reference for us plant enthusiasts. Nice job Sean and thank you for this valuable video.
Haha the mystery of the next leaf pattern is what makes the variegated plant so precious. The ocean mint I believe has a lot of variables in texture/pattern/color.
@@onlyplants I’m super excited. I’ve got a mint that’s a slow grower as well. But the Mint was always a huge goal to get. Now that the Above is out, I’ll just have to wait around to afford one 😅 Being larger form it definitely is slower growing than the Bors. Which for me grows super fast! I’ve also got one this displays 3 colors of variegations.

@@onlyplants He's from the Philippines, same island as me. I've been watching his UA-cam videos since he only had like 50 philodendrons. His collection is so huge now!
EMS is actually a common chemical mutagen to induce mutagenesis in (mostly) ornamental plant. To obtained right amount of concentration LD50 was used (50% died, 50% survived). Great video on something that honestly seems completely overwhelming to me. I really feel like a total unsophisticated dolt because I simply do not see any difference between most of these plants, and certainly not anything that might warrant paying thousands of dollars per leaf because some off-color splotches are in a different spot on the leaf. I’m kind of stuck in the old school mentality of there being the normal version of a monstera and a ‘variegata’ version in which the plant lacks chlorophyll in a few spots. Hi, it is my first comment to UA-cam! I just surprised that the name of "Marble Yakuza Albo". How that name comes, do you know? It is always makes me confuse because there are so many names to Monstera...
I agree theres too many names now… even when small difference mutation appear, someone would jump to give it a new name. Sometimes this makes it more expensive…
I’ve not seen it grafted actually! But logically speaking it should be able to. Monsteras do size up and mature very quickly so maybe no one felt the need to graft one
It does evolve for sure from white var to pink variegations. Buyers should look for best selling plant surpasses the price of Philodendron Spiritus Sancti even the stable price. Hybrids also affected the price of these plants in the market .
I bought a Thai 2 years ago from when it was tiny but it looked different then the others. Now the leaves are mostly white , cream the rest is green and mint specs split of 1/3 of the leaf lol. It grew a lot slower than the other one I bought that day and way different looking. Is there a Thai Quad color ? lol 😂 . The white , cream , green and mint are very obvious. Every leaf comes out roughly the same 😅
I can’t help but wonder why Borsigiana and Deliciosa could not be name as the same variety (Deliciosa) and just be different cultivars - just like you wrote “Monstera Deliciosa ‘Borsigiana’”. The large form one should also have a cultivar name in my opinion.
Once they get mature they grow differently the deliciosia grows waaay larger. Thats why they're normally called large form and small form. Also I think they came from different areas

Monstera mint, Thailand, "evap. system" My main plant room is my bedroom with a 20 gallon heated tropical fish planted aquarium. I add over a gallon of water every week to keep it full after evaporation. Really bumps up humidity. Highly recommended

When I see a Monstera Constellation it makes me think of Wal-Mart.

Monstera mint, Thailand, "evap. system" My main plant room is my bedroom with a 20 gallon heated tropical fish planted aquarium. I add over a gallon of water every week to keep it full after evaporation. Really bumps up humidity. Highly recommended
Make sure you have a bit of air movement circulated around too 😀 like a fan. Plants love that. Oh man I would love to root cuttings in your aquarium haha they probably will root fast
