  • My first look at the Protrail Li single person tent from Tarptent. Setting up and taking a look at the features of the Protrail Li tent and why I think it will be an ideal tent for bikepacking.

    Thanks for watching and if you have any questions or you own a Tarptent, I would love to hear what you think about their shelters.
    ...yep, I used the same thumbnail for two videos, how lame!

    I love my sil-nylon protrail. I have spent over 200 nights inside that tent. I now mostly use a flat tarp but would buy the notch li if I wanted to spend the fortune. Cool video!

    Appreciate the quick look at this tent. Just got mine in the mail today, and am certainly impressed by the weight (or lack thereof). Excited to see how it performs in the field!

      I just did a three day bikepacking trip all up above 5k in the low 40's and it did great. The one thing that can be an issue is having the ideal ground for staking

      @@mcqsviews75 Great to hear! I'm going to see just how far I can push it and use it hiking some of the Colorado 14ers this winter. Rated for "3+" seasons. I guess we'll see just what that "+" means.

      @@evansommer wow! Let me know... Sounds like an amazing trip I hope it works out for you. Are you going to use a ground tarp? I'm still not sure if I'm going to use one or not... Was thinking a piece of Tyvek.

      @@mcqsviews75 My goal was just to rely on the durability of the Dyneema bottom so that I could avoid the extra hassle and weight (albeit small) of the ground tarp. We'll see how that goal holds up though...

    I used the Nylon version southbound on the PCT in 2018. I would say it’s one of the most efficient and reliable single person tents on the market. I’m 6’4. The only downside is only being able to sit upright at the opening of the tent.

    • @mcqsviews75
      @mcqsviews75  3 роки тому

      Awesome! I would agree on the sitting upright comment as well as the front entry can be a bit of a pain from time to time but overall given how light and efficient it is, those are minor problems. thanks for taking a look!

    I'm looking in to getting this tent for an AT thru-hike. Looks super promising. I just worry about being able to stake with poles/stakes for the entire trail, considering that the northern areas are pretty rocky.

    • @mcqsviews75
      @mcqsviews75  3 роки тому +1

      Yes that is certainly something to consider. It can be a pain in Rocky spots.

    • @rebeccagast218
      @rebeccagast218 3 роки тому +2

      You will not have any issue, I promise you that. The only time I tented on the AT somewhere I couldn't stake is because I chose to...which was twice, when I found a nice open rocky area and wanted to look at the stars :)

    by this time I'm sure you've found out that yes indeed you get condensation and honestly it's a bummer to get the inside completely dry

    Nice review. I am also 6.3 and looking for a tent for bike touring. Is the weight you mentioned with the poles included? The Rainbow Carbon weights a little bit more but has all poles included and has way more headroom.

    • @mcqsviews75
      @mcqsviews75  3 роки тому

      the weight i mention in the video isn't with the poles... that adds approximately 5 more oz. thanks for watching and good luck with whatever tent you get!

    Is the pro-trail li seam taped on the inside or outside?

  • @jodaboda1
    @jodaboda1 2 роки тому

    on the Protrail, can you use a stick in lieu of the rear pole, and then put both poles in front, each angled out toward the sides (to keep the full opening available and to have additional stability.)??

    • @mcqsviews75
      @mcqsviews75  2 роки тому

      So you could probably fashion a stick to work if you find the right height stick. The poles are different lengths so you couldn't use both in the front... Good idea but not possible on this tent.

    Can you use a trekking pole rather than a the poles to save weight?

      Absolutely! the only reason I didn't go this route was because I will be using primarily for bikepacking

    Have you had any problems with rain blowing under the front vestibule or up through the front, top vent hood? How about in the foot end with the split opening cover? Any issues with rain blowing in there?

    • @mcqsviews75
      @mcqsviews75  Рік тому

      I haven't yet used it in the rain so I can't say, but it is pretty low profile so I feel it will offer really good protection. Would say there will probably be more of an issue with condensation

    • @wanttogo1958
      @wanttogo1958 Рік тому

      @@mcqsviews75 I’ve read a couple of reviews and the issue of condensation does come up when you have to close it up due to weather in more humid climate like the southeast. Backpacking Light has a good review but they consider it a limited one due to not having tested it in high winds or snow. It wouldn’t be my first choice for very snowy conditions. I think it would do well in wind with the additional guy points in use. Thanks for the response.
