  • I haven't attempted one of these for a while. They're a fun technical challenge, made much easier by the heat gun.

I just took my first wheel throwing pottery class this weekend and have such an appreciation for how difficult this is! Breathtaking work!

One of my favourite things to practice when I don't know what to make! They always turn out super cute when they are small.

That sounds fun, I'll have to try making smaller ones next time!

Very nice! When the clay shrinks will the neck close up? If it does is it ok to have trapped air?

It's a T Rex! They're not really an ideal shape for throwing on the wheel though

Why are you using the heat gun?

My best guess: He mentions this clay throws more like porcelain, which gets sensitive when more water is applied (like collapsing, cracking edges). So by using the heat gun, the vase gets stronger. Because later he applies more water while making the top, which would've affected the base more if it stayed wet.

How do you trim something like this?

Most of the time with a chuck. A chuck is a form you thrown and you place it in your griffin grip (if you have one) then place your object in or over the chuck and it wil hold and protect the shape.just search chuck

      This ^.
I have a thrown chuck I made years ago, but it wasn't actually tall enough for these. I ended up adding a ring of clay to the rim of a tumbler and gripping that in the Giffin Grip. I'm getting videos of the full process, so I'll share those when it's fired
