This is a showcase of Unity's realism, which is pretty good. It's meant to show how good Unity's graphics are, and its cinematic capabilities, so game devs can get excited when they watch this. This is why there is no theme.

@@mikkelohene-opare485 I mean, I don't think they did everything in Unity. Most of the stuff they imported into Unity through a DCC. Unity cloth system is garbage, the cloth physics you see at 4:27 cannot be done in Unity with ease, or at all. Materials aren't as intuitive as in other programs. The only thing they probably did here was using Unity's cinematic tools like Timeline and Cinemachine, which are very good. The realtime rendering is also another thing, but the lighting takes extra effort and requires a very keen sense about how light should look like, but Unreal beats Unity in that regard with realtime global illumination and better anti aliasing. I have no idea how they handled anti aliasing in this short, but it's probably an external plugin they used, because the built in ones are not that good, they cause flickering.
Unity is good, but to do everything within Unity and to get a result like Heretic is probably not possible. It's only possible if you buy paid assets from their asset store. The other good thing about Unity is that it's not as taxing on your hardware as Blender or other popular DCC softwares are

Here’s my take: It’s called The Heretic so we know it has something to do with religion. Introductory setting is a post-Apocalyptic wasteland. He opens a portal and sees a more naturalistic world and the ruins of an ancient kingdom based on some older, steampunk-like technology, not the sophisticated nano-robots of his owl friend. He even said, “I can’t believe we used to build this.”
I think the giant structure they entered was meant to be a place of worship, like a temple or church. The kneeling statues with the cords coming out of their heads seemed to indicate that they had started to worship something new; after that scene, the temple begins to appear more like the apocalyptic setting from the intro, and that demon/deity was made entirely out of the same nanotechnology as the owl. He said, “She (or he?) is the last one” before sacrificing himself. (Not sure if he was talking about the demon or the owl.) Owl spits up some organic white material which resurrects him in a spirit mecha, and they face off for a showdown.
So I think the whole thing is supposed to be a biblical allegory. New Testament says Jesus Christ will return to earth (Second Coming) after the end times, a period of social decay resulting from the ministry of the Antichrist (Apocalypse), and wage war on (and defeat) the Antichrist and his army.
I think the demon is supposed to be an Antichrist figure representing new technology, which people had begun to worship. The guy is supposed to be a Christ-like figure who returned to defeat it. Jesus was considered a heretic when he was alive, hence the title. (I’m not religious so I might have gotten some of that wrong.)
Even if my interpretation is off, I’m almost positive it’s meant to be a critique of our relationship with technology.

the guy gave a briefcase to the monster-like shape-shifting thing and it just killed him. the nano-tech robot thing then took control of his master's body and they become some sort of an angel-like thing.

I think this was just for fun and it's the animators first time useing a realistic model and using extremely detailed special effects with this software
He knew that he was risking his life, possibly knew that he was giving his life, to get an opportunity to get close to the giant... thing.
It looks amazing, but it doesn't look finished.

Ok so here's my take on it: the dude is looking for something considered only legends and not real, together with his nano technology entity in shape of a Raven. When he finds the physical spot or the portal entrance the entity opens the portal to another dimension. Then they proceed to look for the legendary entity which looks like an Ancient God which Humanity might have prayed to back in the days. He finds the entity and proclaims that it is the last of its kind. Probably the last pagan god. At the end they both merge to form an Angel which is an Abrahamic entity.
Now what we actually know: the man is called Gawain, he is the legendary nephew of King Arthur and a Knight at the Round Table, he is part of many legends. The Raven entity's might be a Fairy. Morgraine aka Morgan le Fay (the Fairy) is a powerful enchantress (goddess; witch) in the Arthurian legends.
She used to be benevolent being the protector and saviour of Arthur but later in the legends she became an antagonist. She has a dual nature, that's why she's shown to switch shapes from a woman to a man.
Most likely the case contains the Holy Grail. It's inspired by the Arthurian legends so what else could it be?
So I guess I was pretty close with my original deduction, I guess.😆

It's like movie clips or a sneak peek in my opinion.
I like the way other people are actually serious at their work i don't actualy know how you call it but if it's graphics man it's great and then every seen was living me with suspense i really liked it the only problem with this short films they leave the viewer hanging but great job...great job.
I think that the briefcase is the original container of the cyber-nano-raven. It has a raven and sword emblem on it.
I also suspect that been stabbed is part of the plan, as indicated by him taking off the jacket first.
DAMN shame this only got a little over 100k views. :P

I saw a distant future where the hero is on a mission as all action heroes should. Only this is a distant future where we have realized the gods are real- perhaps like Assassins Creed. They are technological beings with near infinite power. Our hero perhaps nobly gave her the case he was quested to find and she coldly killed him to eliminate witnesses. Or perhaps he dropped the case on purpose hoping to fool or slight her, but underestimated how profoundly powerful she is, and she altered matter, time, and space to brutally murder him for his hubris. Whatever the case, he merges with a piece of technology of her own kind and becomes a higher being. Is she afraid of it? Is she in command of it? Up to you.
