      it's a old ps3/360, laptop GPU fix really but I've been telling him for years whenever I see him do it to get a bottle of liquid flux it makes this fix way more reliable because it can help bring temp under GPU higher, flush out corrosion under it and mend cracked solder balls just a heat gun is like throwing a bandaid on a cut while with flux would be equivalent of using duct tap and toilet paper just way more sturdy of a fix lol

      75% have no idea. 24% tell you they do, and all about how much experience and etc they have, then with no flux in sight, melt 14 grams of solder onto the tip, and then try to use that on cold parts, expecting it to make a super solid joint. Awesome! A couple years ago, I bought two GTX 480s for dirt cheap. Was good seller but I went about a year before installing one. It worked for about one second and the power supply blew up. Well, it blew one cap. I test everything in a backup backup backup system so no big loss and the power supply didn't take out anything with it.

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz 2 роки тому +1

      Caps that are severely degraded from use and which are then sat around for years without being turned on are suspect even if they worked before, they might blow the next time they're brought rapidly up to operating voltage, as the polarisation of the cap may not be intact any longer. I don't even know whether the GPU contributed to that, it starts off in a low power mode, like sure you expect some extra heat in the can due to the burst load, but if the capacitor oxide layer is no longer fully formed, the only way to get it back on is gradually raising the voltage over hours, full voltage no-load condition isn't going to be very helpful at all.

  • @FearThePegasus
    @FearThePegasus 2 роки тому +17

    The heat gun method you used is called reflowing, what you are doing is melting the solder underneath the GPU which when it cools down can reconnect bad solder joints that weren't making proper connection to the actual motherboard of the graphics card. The proper way to do this also involves using a good amount of flux to make sure the melted solder hardens on the proper contact pads.

      Thnx for the informations

    • @DarkoPetreski
      @DarkoPetreski 2 роки тому

      You don't fix that problem with a reflow, only by replacing the chip. You CAN'T reflow the bumps on the flipchip, so flux is useless in this case. You just put a bandaid on the problem, and sooner or later the flipchip connections will loosen up and it will stop working again.

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz 2 роки тому +2

      @LabRat Knatz i have a hard time believing that the heat gun action as shown gets the card up to the liquidus. There have been a number of issues in that era, including lack of underfill, bad thermal expansion coefficient matching, a lot of things went wrong at once. Of course these materials worked "fine" when softer leaded solder was used and when power density wasn't quite as high, but well things changed.
      But ceramic and tantalum caps are worth an extra thought, when they go faulty, they sometimes recover when heated up. Not quite ideal but the issue might not crop up again after.

It was in good condition other than a roughed up rear I/O plate. Did a little research, and apparently it was known for overheating VRAM chips. So new thermal paste, and adding a few copper VRAM heatsinks, the card was up and running no problem. Currently an item in my display cabinet, while it being a working spare GPU.

    RandomGaminginHD : I appreciate you being an "old" soul for the GPU-s....but the THERMI (Fermi 1.0 and Fermi 2.0) were one of the WORTS NVIDIA GPU-s ever made. They were stuttery, poorly equipped for and near or far future, HOT and LOUD and ate nuclear amounts of power. This GTX 580 you have here had a 244 Watt TDP....in reality it ate around 290 Watts as a GPU alone and exhailed HUGE amounts of STEAMY HOT AIR inside a case due to its inefficiency. I had both GTX 480 and GTX 580 later on when they were released and I've "scrathed" by nerve for them in less that a day of gaming. The GTX 680 was much more efficient and a complete overhaul of the architecture that presided all the was to Pascal refreshed RTX 2000 series in 2018.

    If you have never tried the oven regiment you should. As long as your oven gets up to 550 you can use it a toaster oven is a great idea basically you put the card in for three or four separate stages the starting off with a heat of like 230 for 30 minutes then you crank it up another hundred degrees another 30 and just rinse and repeat. Let it cool completely before you touch it or move it. Usually a couple of hours and then give her a go. Works better than a heat gun every time but not as good as true board repair

In fact I sold a basic VGA/DVI monitor and they gave me the money without even testing it. There was no issues with it, but either they don't or just didn't have the time to test. I did take a gamble with them the other week. Found a h110m board for 15 quid. Didn't have a box or back plate, but all seems to be working and been gaming on it with an i5 6500 and 12gb ram.
