📚Description: This is the tale of a 1978 Gibson Les Paul Custom in factory chrome hardware that I was tasked to find for someone back when I offered services like that. My channel has grown too large to help individually hunt down vintage guitars but I'm still happy to help with new guitars via my NGD program.
This is a unique custom that had a very unique pickup date stamp of March 32nd 1978. it could be a mistake, but I believe it to be a hidden april fools joke that took 40+ years to surface.

Back in March of 1978 I thought I had assembled the prefect Gig-Rig!
I had a 1977 Les Paul Deluxe and a 1976 Fender Twin Reverb, my Big-Muff was brand new and I'd just purchased my first EH Small Stones Phase Shifter!
Life was good and I would soon see my 16th Birthday and Driver's License!
I see you were playing solo restaurant gigs
At 16 all of that your parents must have been rather wealthy
@@ewoczkowy7285 Nope, I worked three Summer jobs at the same time.
Edit/Add; My parents did help though, my Mother would drive me to the job at the Gas Station and Dad would pick me up.
@@ewoczkowy7285 Nope, I worked three Summer Jobs, my Grandma's Farm, Part-Time at the Shell Gas Station and also cutting lawns in the neighborhood. I did that for 3 Summers in a row. The Twin Reverb cost me $400 (brand new) and the following Summer I purchased the Les Paul new ($565 w/case).
What my Parents did do was drive me to the gas station job and allow me to use our push-mower to mow the lawns.
It was an easier time to do such things, I just saved and saved and saved. I'm not sure a young person could easily do the same these days, like with the internet, 20 minutes of browsing and I'm convinced there are 5 or 6 new items I just got to have! LOL, consumerism, just say NO to it.
BTW, that Twin Reverb is still with me and works like new. I've only had to replace the Power Supply Filter Caps 4 times and can't tell you how many sets of power tubes I've gone through. Gosh, if that amp could talk, teenage years and early 20s were pretty crazy in the late '70s early '80s! 😉
@@zvotaisvfi8678 LOL, indeed it would appear so! 👍😉
In 1978 March 31st was a Friday.
That would mean that pickup was made on a Saturday (April 1st, 1978)!
Maybe the person who stamped the pickup was not thrilled with working on Saturday!
Greetings Sir.
@@sgt.grinch3299 Greetings Sarge
I do hope the Family and You are well.
The old Wine Red Les Paul Customs, oh how I coveted those when they first started showing up at stores.
So it was made on april fool or the 32nd of march 😂😂😂 that's funny. Hope the person that stamped that pickup sees this video 🤘🤘
I think you're one of a small handful of people on Earth that would've figured that April fools thing out. And I believe that's it. I would've thought that someone just made a mistake. Excellent work!!!
I prefer the chrome look. The gold hardware has always seemed a little gaudy to me. Not the subject of the video, but your guitar playing has gotten a lot better! 👍
Chrome over gold most of the time but gold works on a black or white guitar IMHO
@@jonathanhudak2059 I can see what you mean on the black or white guitar. Chrome looks better over time as you play the guitar.
@markvonwisco7369 thanks! 👍
My first Gibson Les Paul Custom was one I saved to buy back in 1980 (the guitar was a '79). It was an ebony with chrome hardware. Other kids my age (16) were working their butts off to buy a car, but since I grew up on a farm and had tractors and trucks aplenty, I saved for a guitar. Wish I still had it, but my mom sold it and gave me the $$ when I went into the Navy so she could clear out my room! I immediately went to the store and got a Flying V2 in mahogany. I have a Les Paul Custom in alpine white w/gold hardware now, and many less fingerprints show when I gig it. :D
March 78.....reading penthouse mags , listening to Status Quo while I should have been in school........Hi Mum.......lol.....
Superb comment - made me laugh - same age , similar vein !!!!!
Only difference was = I was into 'darker' mag's than "Penthouse" (too weak !)
My Fiancee threw a fuse & told me to 'Get Rid' off them**
** I told her to "F&&K OFF" & we still got married & had kids anyways !!!!!!!
@@hawnyfox3411 I was being polite....in a public forum and all.
I miss my old fretless wonder from 1974. (Natural custom w/gold hw) I never had any issues with it. If Norlin was messing something up, I never saw it, felt it or heard it. It was one of a shipment of 9 that were delivered to a dealer, so I had my pick. I think I played 2 or 3, but all seemed magical to me!
Back in 1980s got a 1975 LP Custom with 'low wide frets. Whether or not you want to call them fretless, they were impossible to crown or do anything to so entirely pointless as frets. My luthier ruined the ebony fretboard trying. On top of Norlin boat anchor weight I sold it back to original owner (not the guy I bought it from but first owner).
9:04 u were feeling something right there… be interested to see how this lines up to a grid, sounds tight af but oozes soul.
i had a early 70s black custom LP with GOLD hardware..i bought it in 74....it was a beauty.....(didn't even know there was chrome hardware)
and it was as dead as a doornail....at least compared to the goldtop with p90s of my bandmate at the time......i sold it when i needed the money for our 1st house......sadly....
Chrome with that color looks great.
Would love to have a 1978 LP.
Was 9 days old on March 32nd😅
Don't normally like chrome but w/ this color, it looks super good.
Luvin the pickups, wish they were in my 93 classic
Really brought out the essence of this one with the demo, the stock pick ups sound godly
I’ll be honest, I’m just not that big of a fan of Gibson I’m more of a Gretsch guy for my punk metal (lol) but nonetheless, Austin has such a in depth knowledge of guitars in general, more than me, and I love coming to this channel and seeing the beautiful guitars he puts on here and I get to learn a bit more than before! Great upload and great channel, thank you Austin
I have a 1979 LP Custom in ebony with the factory chrome that I bought new off the rack at Guitar Center in Chicago. I figured the gold would wear off anyhow, so why bother. Came with speed knobs. The only non-original thing is the plastic pickup rings are now cream instead of black, a nod to my Dimarzio days back in the 80s. I guess when we put the original pickups back in, we didn't have the original black rings.
I wish they still made customs with chrome hardware. I’d buy one in a heartbeat
On Wine Red, I’d say the Gold looks best, on the Wbony, I could go either way. I have a 1989 Gibson LP Custom in Ebony with Gold hardware. It just the classic look. But I wouldn’t hate having a matching LPC with Nickel parts. That would be killer too for sure!
The right tool to remove studs is any old small screw or a nut or2. It’s reeealy easy.
Good topic to dive into. Chrome customs. Thanks!
I like your distortion tone from this.
From the mesa boogie mark 5:25 era
Zakk's 81 custom bullseye started out originally white 👍
My first Gibson was a 76 black beauty that started my whole guitar collecting or should I say my guitar madness happened. I wish I still had that guitar I sold it for 1800.00 dollars just what I paid for it. Not alot of money but a great guitar I really miss her.
When I bought mine they were about $600 shiny new! (custom w/gold hw)
Idk what you did diffrnet but that is the best sounding demo you have ever done, whatever you did do it more often
I have a 1981Gibson cherry burst les paul custom with all chrome original to the guitar. bought is used in 1991 great guitar but the one thing i hate about Les Paul customs is i hate the black plastics on them. so i called George Gruhn and he sent me all blonde plastics for the guitar plus the gold speed knobs with 2 new pickups. cream dimarzio super distortion for the bridge and cream dimarzio Paf for the bridge. great sounding and looking Les paul custom per ace frehley!! i love the guitar. i have the chainsaw case but i bought a brown gibson case with blanket to go with the upgrade it has the flip out winder tuners too boot in chrome
I always put nickel hardware on all my Gibsons. It looks way better than chrome or gold (imho of course).
I remember this video, beautiful guitar
Solid riffing tonight!
Cheers 🍻
Love my 1978 Les paul Custom! Great Video!
On vehicle engines many people remove studs by screwing 2 nuts onto the stud, tightening the two nuts together and then unscrewing the stud using the lower of the two locked nuts. Guessing a similar method might work on a Gibson bridge post?
The Gold wears off too easily
Love that color. Dark wine red or oxblood. At first I thought it was a black beauty.
Hi Trogly. Q & A. I have an early 2006 les paul standard, that is supposed to be an AAA top, I used to work for Billy Hydes music, Aus, so I bought it in 2006, brand new (Btw very interesting story behind this guitar), anyway, in the bridge cavity it says AA+, is this the same or , idk what's the go, but it's a beautiful heritage cheery, very dark, like your2005, mines a 60s style neck. any idea? Cheers, love the content. D
LOVE the April fools day pickup story!!
I chromed out my black 1978 Custom back in the 80's. I also put double cream DiMarzios in mine like Ace Frehley. Gold hardware is very thin and you can easily chrome it out by buffing it with polish. It's a little tricky but it works on the bushings too (mask off the surrounding area). It's funny to hear about the good days when they were $2-$4k lol I'm not that old but I remember when they under $1k and nobody wanted them. I paid $750 for mine in the mid 80's and I had a part time job.
As far as the 1978 Custom... it was the worst Gibson I ever owned. In fact, every late 70's Les Paul I owned or played was pretty much garbage. I'd recommend to anyone who wants a Norlin era Les Paul that actually plays well to pass on the late 70's ones and look for one from early to mid 80's. IMO, they're much better players especially if you like rounder necks. Better yet... pass on the Norlin era Les Pauls altogether if you actually play. For the record, I'm not a Norlin hater, I like many of the other models from that period.
They need to bring back coloured and burst LP Customs! Tobacco Sunburst custom is just 🤤
Learned something new March 32 😂 nice Norlin Custom 👏👍🤘
That's hilarious you know its really funny once you start seeing these factory easter eggs they're all over electronics.
I prefer chrome or nickel over gold. Gold always wears away and looks tatty after a while.
Have you ever heard anything about the stolen Adams Jones guitars. Just curious
Nope, disappeared in to thin air! Maybe in 30 years they'll pop up as hot collectibles...
I bought an early 70's LP Custom. My 17 year old shoulder regretted that decision. I traded it for a Keith Richards looking Tele. Humbucker Neck, Single Coil bridge. Still have it.
I was about a month and a half from turning 6!
What riff are you playing at the 9:00 mark?
Dude the name is like right there in the back of my mind. As soon as I remember I’ll update you.
He plays it all the time and I also remember listening to the song when I was younger but haven't come up with the name yet.
@@danielrevollo3278 same! It sounds very 90’s lol
@@Photognick521 I think it's early 2000s. Definitely something in my music library around the emo times 🤣
came here to ask the same question
Ha! Those Gibson engineers! That's classic.
Great video
Love your channel but hadn't watched for a while.
I noticed your playing is coming on in leaps and bounds.
Respect to you Sir!
What’s this riff from? 8:48
that whole section is something I made up many years ago
Oooh damn, that is sweet.
Ok, 7:30 ish was he playing "Green grass and High tides" by the Outlaws? Perfect for this guitar 😂😂
Sounds like 18 by Alice Cooper
Why did you speed up some of the demo takes? i.e. 7:51? Anywho, LOVE a nice wine red LP.
The whole demo was 120% and drowned with reverb to hide it haha. sped up for entertainment purposes as I played even slower than I do now 5 years ago
@Trog Ah... Here I thought it was an error because you had mentioned that your editor had the day off. I never claimed to be intelligent, 😆.
Ought to throw some Dirty Fingers and a chrome pickguard on that guitar and make it a tribute to the great John Sykes!
Love this guitar, sounds awesome, Tool still blows
But now with the Demo Shop all this becomes irrelevant. You got gold and chrome mix matched parts ect. If they forget the demo stamp and the seller looses paperwork. There's no telling what you get now
It would look even better with nickel hardware and no pickup covers.
December 32nd would have been funnier
I have a 76 00 serial number black and chrome. Legit.
❤😊
Chop chop 🎸👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
gold looks WAY better to me on every lp custom (except Silverburst)
March 32nd 😆♥️😆
Lovely
Good playing today, Trogly!
Dude my bro do not sell that axe...sounds looks amaze b's...don't sell it..side note just got my Trogly T in the ol po box and love it and thank you good sir💯🤙
You sound like you’re pwacting.😊👍🏻
Chrome looks better
Evening Troglodytes!!
Hey there
Salutations Austin!
Really nice Les Paul Custom, and it sounds really good too!
Thanks for sharing!
Please have an excellent and awesome day!

✌️
Gold hardware is completely tacky and ugly.
Absolutely agree...like an old Las Vegas hotel room.
Usually agree, but it does fit some guitars and finishes.
It works on some, doesn't work on most. It depends on the colour of the body IMO.
A Black Beauty pulls it off brilliantly, but I'm yet to see it work on an Ox Blood for example
I generally prefer chrome too but a white Les Paul or triple pickup SG Custom pull off the gold hardware well IMHO
:0)

Why would u disclose that your editor needed a day off? Seems 1000% irrelevant
Because long time viewers of the show will remember this video topic and the editing wasn't to my usual standard and don't want questions of "why are you reuploading" "I don't like this new style" etc
Probably 100 different ways u coulda done that and not called out your employee
And just so you’re not trying to label me as a troll or something I watch daily. Except ur episodes where it shows ur yearly collection cause that’s just showin off
TAKE SOME OF THAT INTERNET MONEY AND GET SOME EDUCATION! "THIS GUITAR HAS A STORY THAT I'LL NEVER FORGET.".... WELCOME TO THE AGE OF THE " INTERNET IGNORAMOUS!".....
A day off! How dare they! My 81 in my profile picture
