I just started online Master's courses and turned in a paper that I thought was killer. Overall, a thesis is a clear statement that prepares your audience for what is to come. It helps the audience organize their thoughts in preparation for reading on. The purpose of a thesis statement is to state your intention, your claim, your purpose for communicating, in clear and detailed terms that you will them move on to prove with specific examples, supporting evidence and/or anecdotes.
I am not sure about the place of thesis statement as advocated by this video. Personally, I'd put it in the middle of the introduction section or paragraph. My teachers seem to like it that way, saying my essays' really sharp and clear and everything! :)))

As your writing becomes more sophisticated, you begin to play with a variety of styles and formats to communicate your intended purpose. It all comes back to understanding what your purpose is. What is your reason for writing?
