When I was in highschool, during the late-70s, the Pirelli P7 was *the* tire to have on a high-performance car. Looking back, it was the only real high-performance tire easily available to the enthusiast. Used to stare at the ads in R&T and C&D and dream about having a set on my non-existent 930. Never owned them, or any Pirelli tire to this day.
My dad owned a 1971 Toyota Corolla and he said driving that car on bumpy roads was a nightmare. He spent the high price for Pirelli radials because the OEM tires made that car a nightmare to drive over bumpy roads.
IME, the bulk of '70s Japanese cars were relatively fuel efficient, pretty reliable, and inexpensive. Driving them was a whole 'nother story. Imagine trying to get a lawn tractor to corner. At that time, German cars were the only option for a driving enthusiast and that's how many of us grew up. How the times have changed! The problem doesn't rest with the manufacturers; there's a lack of demand for a focused driving machine.
@@felixf5211 Sure, there were many things he didn't like. However, compared to the next affordable German car, the VW Super Beetle, the Toyota Corolla felt like a massive improvement.
First, a huge thanks for making a video about Pirelli. Pirelli did a great job of associating their name with expensive and fast cars, but there was a problem. Their name was barely noticed by people who drove cars that weren't expensive or fast. I worked at places that would occasionally run out of their own brand in certain sizes. These sizes were usually found on various Ford Explorers and similar size SUVs. People would look at their estimate and be stunned that a high quality and brand name tire could be sold at such a low price. They would often ask "Why haven't I heard much about the Pirelli brand?" 8:10 For a few years, I wondered what a Lancia Delta AWD felt like when compared to rally cars that were sold in the USA.
Pirelli P Zero, Hankook Ventus V12 evo. Both are great for daily city driving and road trips. Pirelli are better for all season driving (in my opinion).
I've gotten 19k miles on my small SUV that came with Pirelli Scorpion Verde tires. It's a grocery getter that got 2 years of average driving out of the stock tires. That is really bad, but not nearly as bad as Pirelli's attempts to ignore the problem and complaints about it.
I have always bought performance touring tires. Michelin, Goodyear, Hankook, Kumho and Ohtsu (Falken) have been the good brands in my years of driving. I bought a car with Pirellis once and I hated it.
I loved my P4's on my Impreza. I've got Scorpion Verde All Season Plus's on my AWD Sienna. The P7's or P Zero All Seasons are at the top of my list to replace the Firestone's on my Challenger.
@@williamreid2053 yup, I went with the Michelins. After reading countless reviews on each tire I decided the Michelins were better. I am very happy with them
I got my dad to put pirelli Scorpio verde all seasons on the 2005 Cadillac SRX (was able to find a decent discount). Definitely an improvement over the old tires it had.
Nice history vid! Since early 1980s, practically every new set of tires 2-wheel and 4-wheel I've bought have been Pirellis. Yeah, always a bit more than the other choices, but they are just so good. Performance numbers never seem that astounding, but many a time they came up with just the right amount of controllable traction, steering precision, and forgiveness to keep me 1) out front, and 2) out of trouble. But another thing that sucked me in was the Cool Factor. I can't remember the name of the motorcycle tire, but it had a diagonal tread that was so unusual, and it so perfectly matched the handling of my Yamaha XS-750 shaft-drive ride. Cinturatos on some hand-me-down Cromodora mags turned my Toyota sedan into a Fairlady Z-beater. Came upon this vid while looking for replacement tires for my new Tesla Model Y Performance, which got me looking (yet again) at Pirelli. Goodbye Michelin, hello Pirelli PZ4 "Elect" tires!!
