Band BIO:
Pentatonix is an American a cappella group from Arlington, Texas, consisting of vocalists Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, Kirstin Maldonado, Kevin Olusola, and Matt Sallee. Characterized by their pop-style arrangements with vocal harmonies, basslines, riffing, percussion, and beatboxing, they produce cover versions of modern pop works or Christmas songs, sometimes in the form of medleys, along with original material. Pentatonix formed in 2011 and subsequently won the third season of NBC's The Sing-Off, receiving $200,000 and a recording contract with Sony Music. When Sony's Epic Records dropped the group after The Sing-Off, the group formed its UA-cam channel, distributing its music through Madison Gate Records, a label owned by Sony Pictures.Their UA-cam channel currently has over 18 million subscribers and 4 billion views. The group's video tribute to Daft Punk had received over 340 million views as of December 12th, 2020.

That Aeolian cadence with the Picardy 3rd at the end was fire! I love when the 5 of them gather together; it’s then you know something epic is on the way! That “Wall Of Sound” is killin! Kirstie served double duty here. She did duets with both Scott AND Mitch and she layered the background harmonies with possibly Kevin! This was genius and deserves PTX their 4th Grammy!

Every time I'm ready to hold my breath and listen to them until I'm exhausted. It was snowing outside my window today when I turned on your reaction, guys. It's just a miracle how this music and voices matched the landscape outside the window. I felt the joy of approaching the New Year, Christmas. It was so exciting and solemn at the same time. Yea so.. I really REALLY don’t get those who are so stuck in the wind of the past, they can’t feel the breath of the present. This rendition man… it’s easily one of the 3 most incredible things I’ve ever heard. I want to highlight one thing though.. Scott, Kirsten and Mitch were just perfect in this. I mean absolutely perfect. The thing I wish to highlight though, are Kevin and Matt. They both sometimes get slightly under-appreciated, especially Matt.
I’ve said this before, and I keep getting proven right. Matt is the best thing that has happened to this group. The energy and versatility he has brought has been invaluable. He absolutely is a true bass, but more than that he is humble. His willingness to be the rock solid foundation has allowed the rest of the group to flourish in ways they did not before. Every time I listen to their more current songs, I can hear it.. and I can feel it. The thing is though, he’s not just a serviceable Avi replacement.
He is INCREDIBLY good at what he does, and so versatile that it often doesn’t seem possible. One song he sounds like Scott, the next like Avi, then like an actual Bass guitar, then like an opera singer, then like N’Sync, etc. and that resonance… sometimes I think about it like this. With Avi, it’s like you’re sinking in an ocean of Bass, deep, bottomless and immense. With Matt, it’s like you’re getting hit by a train of Bass, powerful, resonating / vibrating and focused.
This also holds true for Kevin. His improvement as a singer AND as a beat-boxer has been almost unreal. The increased confidence in his voice and his performance has been dramatic. He isn’t just “good” anymore, he is just as unreal as the rest of the group. More than anything, I love that his beatboxing has still improved. Most would have considered him just about the best there is before, yet still he continues to add & evolve. The man is a musical genius.
@Justin Perry. Kudos!! I've read a "few" comebacks about Matt and Kevin. However yours is EPIC!! I may copy this verbatim from you and use it when necessary for pining reactors and commenters. Your description of Kevin and Matt's talent is as flawless as their gifts. Imagine all the pentaholics enjoying this exquisite, beautiful music PTX continues to produce yet being some passive and silent as the crucial percussion and bass are overlooked or in Matt's case downplayed and often "dissed." People take them for granted as if the "trio" are all that matters. They are "penta," five who make Pentatonix great! I'm amazed those who had wished for them to fail either: 1) abandoned PTX when the other bass departed; 2) failed to regard Matt's awesome talent so as not to offend the departed one; and/or 3) continued to ignore Matt as if he doesn't exist (like these reactors who replayed the "theater surround sound" like that's possible without bass.) You're right -- Kevin and Matt continue exponentially expanding their craft. What they've contributed in most of these songs is mind-boggling. Nothing detractors say can change that. And final note: Kirsten was amazing here piercing through with her vocals -- just lovely, chilling and sublime. Much love PTX, you and your arrangements are beautiful!
@@carolynl.higgins6206 I gotta tell you, this is the kindest reply I have ever received. ESPECIALLY on UA-cam. I guess I shouldn’t be shocked, PTX fans are (for the most part), extremely respectful and welcoming. I sincerely value and appreciate your words.
As you obviously already know, you are spot on the well. Avi (while still amazing with PTX) Is the type of bass that is immeasurably rare. A-once-in-a-generation talent, if you will. Pair that with his desired lifestyle, it was in his spirit’s best interest to forge a new path. It really does warm my heart that the remaining 4 members were so excepting and supportive of his decision.
However, this is PTX we are talking about. They are the best A Capella in the world, and that isn’t an opinion, but a widely excepted fact. You cannot just throw anyone in there, and people already know that. With them there isn’t such a thing as good enough, or even excellent. For them, it’s about perfection. Being the best, and continuing to be the best, regardless of any bumps in the road.
So again, for anyone else who may be reading this… Believe me when I say that Matt was chosen for a reason. Most people don’t know this, but do you know the lowest note Matt can hit is only 1 note above Avi’s? Listen to them live… you tell me who most sounds like their studio version. They literally could not have found a better new member.
Lastly, with Kevin…. Many don’t realize how much he has improved. I am a huge believer of the notion that you should never stop trying to improve. The best of the best can still find ways to be better. Nothing defines Kevin better than that statement. This man has a type of mind that Mozart himself would have envied. He was always good, but now? Now he has the voice of an angel, The talent of a prodigy, and the confidence of a King.

I hope this is seen by more people who continue to ignore Matt and exclaim how much they miss Avi as if he died. you can't miss him when he's continued to make music and have a pretty successful career doing it. miss him? go listen to his solo music and give Matt his flowers for being the truly versatile bass that he is. thank you so much for this comment, it made my day ❤️

Mitch is hands down my favorite, BUT Kirsten did a phenomenal job echoing Mitch. And they all deserve the praise. You should watch the making of Evergreen, you’ll see how hard they all worked.

While I love Kirstie's part, I agree with you that this was Mitch's song. I think a lot of people who have been reacting to them for awhile are so used to him hitting those incredible notes and having such amazing vocal control that they are like "Oh, pretty, Mitch is singing high notes again, but Scott sang in a different language!! Wow!" While I think it's always impressive when they sing in a different language (they've all done it on several songs), I think Scott's tone is more impressive than him singing in Italian. I laugh when people are like "Listen to the notes Kirstie is hitting!" when Mitch is impossibly hitting the same notes and some even higher notes. I love this whole arrangement and everyone's part in it. My only small complaint is once they all came together into the shot, I wish the director had shown all of them instead of so many closeups because I like to see what each member is doing and I feel like we hardly saw Matt and Kevin, who had enormous contributions to making this song so incredible.

I'm a little late to the party but if you listen to the original, the part where both Mitch and Kirstie sing, it is sung in both Italian and English so PTX kept it the same but sang it all in English. I thought it was amazing and it kept it in line with the original but added that PTX spin.

Came back to watch this reaction again - and to see if you've done any ptx since - disappointed that you haven't. I'd love to see you react to the making of evergreen - gives a look in-studio of them recording the album that included this song on it.
Alan, that was the perfect comparison to the THX sound you hear in Theatres. I think this one of the best arrangements they've done so far. Have you ever considered Gabriel Henrique? He just released O Holy Night, which is one of my favorite Christmas songs.
We haven't heard of him before but we are totally down to check him out.
@@dicodec Oh man, you are in for a treat He sings I have nothing by Whitney Houston, in original key. I'd check that one out first and then go to O Holy Night since we are close to the holidays. But he has a bunch of other covers as well. He's amazing, I promise you that.

Hi guys, you mentioned the mix and the fact this is a studio performance - check out a recent Iheart Radio perfomance of this song, they did - I think - four songs over the broadcast, so you can hear this as a live version for your comparison. I thought it sounded almost the same as this!

Actually, I watched the behind the scenes video, they were really singing, not lip syncing. They built the scene, indoors and were very careful with the fake snow. They've had issues with that stuff in the past. Kevin, at one point, looked like someone dumped a bag of powdered sugar on his head. He said that they were trying for some kind of snow effect and Oops. So he had to head to make up for removing the "snow". He was laughing about it.

I think that Marcelito was rushed to keep up with the music track in switching voices and that reduced the quality. If he was given live music that played to him, it would be excellent. (Not taking anything away from PTX)

I've listened to your reactions for quite some time now and enjoy them, although the sudden drop at the end causes me to wish for more of the afterthoughts we used to get in the earlier ones. I mean we get the foreplay and the main event but then we're thrown out into the cold without even time for a cigarette. BUT of all the reactors I've listened to over the years I must give it to you for the quality of sound reproduction you transmit. If I know the song or video that isn't so important though the earhole pleasuring is appreciated but if I don't then it gives much more of an insight into why I should perhaps listen to more of them. I'll keep looking forward to the next time even though I know it's just going to be another one night stand. In the words of Chaka Khan in Through the Fire, "When it's this good there's no saying no".
