James O'Brien highlights the 'political imbecility' of Brexit amid new food import checks | LBC

  • James O'Brien discusses recent reports suggesting food imports to the UK are at risk in confusion over post-Brexit checks and emphasises how this proves how 'stupid' the idea of Brexit really is. James highlights how people believed the words of a 'proven liar' in Boris Johnson and a 'proven idiot' in Jacob Rees-Mogg, who assured people that 'food would be cheaper.'

@@seamuspadraigsanders431 it wasn’t happening before because we were part of an economic bloc and aligned to the same food standards rules, and we contributed to common funds just like every EU member does. So we didn’t “pay them a giant fee not to check their standards”. This change is bad news because introducing checks will mean delays and we import a lot of fresh food from our neighbours. I think you are being generous to the likes of Johnson and Mogg. They cannot be ignorant. They are surrounded by civil servants, spads, advisors, savvy journalists, research assistants, and even intelligence services that provide them with briefings and cutting-edge information in real-time. There is no possibility they acted without being fully aware of their political and personal motivations at the expense of the British people, and truth and justice itself. He also wanted to roll back the rights and protections, to make it easier for people like him to take advantage of the ordinary members of the public. BoJo only wanted power and splendour. He would do anything to get it. Both aren’t titans of intellect but they knew. They would reap their rewards and let the ordinary people pay the price.

    They are changing though.
I told them that February the 1st was happening and they swore blindly that it wasn’t.

Some of them have had problems travelling around the EU. I told them about the visa and they again said “that wasn’t true”. Their little faces when they realised that half their family wasn’t going to get one as they have probation and convictions that are going to haunt them now.

It's still the political will to make Brexit as painful as possible and the even higher (than Labour) post Brexit record immigration figures are there to water down Brexiteer votes to irrelevance. The next LibLab coalition will hold another referendum to join the EU (with only the Libs mentioning it in the manifesto of course) - and the 1%+ PA population replacement that's happened over the last 10 years will easily push the "join" vote over the line. Only we'll join as new members - no concessions, forced to join the Euro and in line with the 2030 accords that will place all our natural resources in the hands of the unelected Eurocrats. The political class will get what they wanted all along - total alignment with the EU - this was all a clever game.

In the COVID Public Inquiry in testimony it was reported that Ministers heard of the tragedy unfolding in Italy in the early days and derided the Italians and believed somehow British exceptionalism wouldn’t allow this to happen in the UK. How did that work out? It's that same delusion that somehow Brexit would work even though 99.9% of experts said it wouldn't and then Gove said we didn't need experts.
Currently we have a government introducing legislation saying Rwanda is safe country even though the courts says its not, and the UK have given four Rwandan citizens asylum over “well-founded” fears of persecution.

Doesn't this also apply to goods coming from outside of the EU, but that enter the EU before their making their way to the final destination of the UK?
Previously when we were in the EU, any goods that landed in the EU first, but that were bound for the UK were checked at the first port they landed at. As far as I understand it now, goods destined for the UK, are not checked at all when they enter the EU, and are effectively just waved on through. Checking them to make sure they aren't dangerous, or that the goods actually are what they're supposed to be, is now the responsibility of the UK border controls. Of course, the government has not built the infrastructure, nor invested in the people needed to do this properly, and so even after these "light-touch" but still disruptive checks come in, we are still at high risk of importing dangerous goods/diseases!

The thing about them is not that they didn't know (and maybe they didn't... they seems foolish enough but you can never tell if that's just an act) but that they didn't particularly care either way. They had set up their own affairs so that they would benefit, the studied carefully what they had to say to get their way rather than what would happen, they benefitted, and they probably feel that this justifies everything. In their worldview if someone didn't benefit when they did it's their own fault even though they do know that most people would be worse off from their actions and that only their select group of friends could possibly benefit.

Another thing that feeds into this. There is currently a severe drought in southern Spain, an area that supplies a lot od fresh fruit and veg to the uk. They are in discussions with Portugal over shipping clean water from Portugal to Spain to help alleviate this but Portugal themselves are also suffering from the same drought.
It is very unlikely that they will send food to the UK to rot in uk ports when they can easily supply what they are able to produce, paperwork free, within the rest of the EU. The uk boarder checks will just add to the incentives to no longer supply the UK.
Things are starting to be quite elemental for them and a cost they didn't have before, is not one they can afford now.

During the period leading up to the referendum I tried in vain to connect with any brexiter on the subject of non-tariff barriers and I was discussing this on many forums and Facebook. In fact, like James I received tons of abuse about this. I'm certainly not an expert on trade but I was able to read extensively on the the subject as applied to brexit for two reasons, one, that I was interested and two, because I had the time on my hands because I was retired by then. On the subject of Johnson and Rees-Mogg, I believe that Johnson was lying about there being no non-tariff barriers but also believe that Rees-Mogg was simply mistaken. I believe this because Rees-Mogg simply isn't bright enough to understand the complexities of international trade. He showed this quite clearly when he was banging on about the mythical 10 year trade "grace period" relating to Article XXIV of GATT. A load of elderly Tory brexiters were trotted out on the media to back up this piece of "cakism" nonsense and like JRM they were also wrong because they were either not bright enough to understand it or too arrogant to research it.
