  • Trimley Level Crossing, Trimley St. Mary, Felixstowe, Suffolk
    Date filmed: 26/10/2020
    Route: Felixstowe Branch Line
    - Trimley Station
    Location: Cordy's Lane, Trimley
Trains: Class 755 (Greater Anglia) - Arrives at 3:06 - Departs at 4:31
Class 66 (Freightliner) "Madge Elliot MBE" - 8:47
    Class 66 (Freightliner) - 12:19
A level crossing located next to Trimley Station, the last intermediate station before Felixstowe on the Felixstowe Branch Line, and the station next to the entrance/exit from the north end of the port of Felixstowe. This level crossing has a total of five LED wigwags, two of which are thin due to the narrow road and obscuring hedges and buildings here around the level crossing, and one of the four mounting posts has a normally-oriented wigwag above one of these thin wigwags, which is fairly unique and unusual, and very much like that seen on a traffic island at Victoria Road Level Crossing 46 miles away from this location near Lowestoft. There are also two alarms at this level crossing, which both sound at a reasonable volume given the level crossing's quiet and tucked-away location, though one of these alarms is fairly faulty as it "warbles". To the southeast of the station, the line continues either towards the entrance to the north of the Port of Felixstowe, or towards Felixstowe Beach junction for trains heading to Felixstowe Station or the south side of the port, and to the northeast of this level crossing, a few miles of track was doubled during re-signalling on the line, though this level crossing has remained un-changed to the date of recording despite this, and is a good place to watch passenger and freight trains alike.
At the time of filming, this was the longest lowering I had ever filmed, since the level crossing was active for a total of 13 and a half minutes! During this time, a Greater Anglia passenger service stopped in the station and overhung the platform onto the level crossing, and two additional freight trains also passed, making use of the relatively-newly doubled track as a passing loop to exit and enter the north of the Felixstowe Port respectively.
Fear not! You do not have to watch the full video - just use the time stamps above to skip to when the trains arrive. Of course, feel free to watch the entire video if you must!
Apologies if the video seems a little shaky, since I had to use my backup camera to film this video, and I was checking the timetable on my phone at certain points during the lowering as to check what was approaching.
    Thanks for watching!

That's pretty cool. You got lucky with three trains in the same lowering.

I have seen as many as 5 pass in a single lowering, but this is certainly the longest time a crossing has been lowered that I have filmed thus far.

Thank you! The loose track beds are even worse at nearby Levington and Morston Hall LCs - the trains properly thud past those!

Cool video! What software do you use to check what trains are approaching? (Passenger and freight)

Thank you! I mainly use Real Time Trains, but I also tend to use Open Train Times, which I was looking at whilst filming this
