    I was going to say "where are all these people claiming it's easy?" then I read the comments. It seems that we have plenty of world class archers amongst the viewers.

      There are people over 40 years old competing on the national stage for barebow who have been shooting for less than 2 years. Show me another sport where you can start over the age over 40 and finish top 5 in a national competition in just under 2 years of learning.
      Archery is just not THAT hard compared to other sports and skills. It's not exactly "easy" but it's also not that hard. Give me a fucking break.

    partner & i picked up bows after a 30 year break & went to an ''introduction to archery session'' at a local club & raised some eyebrows with our performance.. So i kinda think it is like riding a bike, but right now the bikes we are riding are very rusty.. :) (note: partner held state/national records as a teenager & had a coach & trained daily; I on the other hand just had a compound bow on a farm & practiced daily.) I think there is a lot of muscle memory in regards to technique & this meant much of the basic stuff we didn't need to be taught.
    we now a month back into the sport & look forward to being able to pick up a bow on the weekends!

    I have a stressful and high paced full time job and I go to law school at night. I’ve found it helpful to blind bale at least 30 arrows (usually more because it’s so addictive) at 2-3 yards every night before I go to bed. As self care and dedicated “me time,” I make sure to go to the range at least once a week. It prevents skill decay and I think I’m making progress.

    After just taking two weeks off shooting due to some equipment issues, I can relate to everything you just said in this video. I picked it back up yesterday and everything just feels odd. I didn’t think about using stretch bands and thinking through my draw cycle. Good idea! I will do that next time I find myself unable to shoot my bow. Hopefully things will fall back into place once I’m back on my 3-4 times a week schedule.

    I'm coming back to archery after a 4 year hiatus, due to moving to a new town that didn't until very recently have a place to shoot in any reasonable distance (the closest was more than an hour and a half away). So I figure I'm pretty much starting from scratch again. Thanks for this video, because it does cement in my mind that I should now take advantage of being retired, and go to the range more than once a week. :)

    I so agree . I haven't been able to pick up my bow in 2-3 weeks due to work schedule and weather.
    I'm dreading what it's going to be like when I get the opportunity to shoot this week.

    I like your comment about how self review/evaluation increases the overall retention of knowledge - definitely insightful. Hearing a correction from your coach and deconstructing your own shot cycle on video are two very different experiences. I've found a lot of benefit from seeing myself in action; it also makes for easier visualization later on.

    After 1.5 years I had to take a 6 months break. Now, after a month of training I still feel weak, had to drop 10 lbs, but technique is coming back fast because I wrote down about 25 steps of my shot process and I have good trainers at the club. A shot process diary greatly helps to recognise and reflect mistakes by yourself.

    Totally agreed. I used to be a pro historical shooter like 15 years ago, almost went to a national championship, but my bow broke (historical bows, yay, right?). I haven't been shooting since then (until now) and I basically have to learn the skill from scratch. Especially since I moved over to a recurve bow and a different style. I remember how to do everything, it just doesn't click yet. I'm just now starting to "get there" after around 600 arrows over a couple of days, and the results are far from satisfactory still.

    I haven't done archery in quite a while. Feels like I'm not motivated. Been busy with school so I'm kinda scared to pick it up again to see how worse I've gotten

    Its a real concern for me. I had a few months of hiatus since i have to train a few kids for an upcoming competition. Had to drop from a 42 lbs to a 36 lbs bow.

    I shoot both freestyle recurve and compound. Not getting good enough to my taste at both 😐but still enjoying every arrow... but just recently developed target panic with my thumb release... just swapped to back-tension release for the cure... but must restart at3m to learn this new release... but still fun!

    Absolutely right. Personally, it's winter that disrupts my weekly training because I live in Canada (heavy winter). And I do not like to go to the Archery Club anymore because the archers are all teenagers, they are nice and ok, however that's not my age group at all.

      With you there. It does a number on our skill set for a lot of sports. What province are you in? I’d suggest going at a different time if possible, remembering your actually competing against your self and not them. As ever have fun with it.

      @@derrickstableford8152 The club in my region (Laval / Quebec) is mainly devoted to Olympic-type archers. Moreover, Virginie Chenier (Team Canada for the next Olympic Games) trains there regularly and has given me valuable advice in the past. I have to go elsewhere for good 3D clubs. However most of the time, I practice in the forest near my home. Have a nice day and take care. :-)

    I love your videos, they are so well explained, but I have a friend who shoots a compound bow. Do you have any recommendations for someone with the in-debth knowladge but about compunds? I would love to send him the link to that. :) And I have recommended you aswell just because it is good to know more than one type of shooting and training ;)

    2 videos in 12 hours? slow down nu! you'll get burned out. i think i can speak for people that watch you and that we are ok with a video a week. i definitely enjoy these videos but we want to see you do stuff very well. these were but you should slow down! we dont want to go a mont without a video again :D

    so it´s like riding a bike or writing
    why do people belive that they can ride a bike "just like before" after a 2 year pause??
    you can´t for the same reasons, you will be to weak AND you will need at least a week to "re-lern" the necessary coordination
    same for writing, the last thing i wrote by hand was 10 years ago in high school, if i tried to write an essay now my whole arm would hurt before im finished and at least 2 more days after that
    if you lerned something before that only means that you should know how it´s supposed to be done, which means you should be able to "re-lern" it faster, nothing more

    I know you aren't an archery hunter, but I have always been impressed by your archery knowledge and explanations. Are you familiar with the concept of "weight forward of center" when it comes to arrow penetration for hunting applications? I'm curious what your thoughts and understanding are of that concept, and if that would be a video you would like to put out.

      for penetration, momentum is king. I recommend looking up Arrow Lethatlity by Dr. Ed Ashby - I believe it's on youtube

    May I ask as you grow older our skill that we have will it deteriorate or just our draw weight will go down little by little as we grow old? Because most of the archers today in major competition are all young early 20's to early 30's . Unlike others sports like billiards, darts, and bowling and golf.

    I was able to start off with 35 pounds and it was no problem for me, at my full draw I'm holding back more like 40 pounds

    Hey NUSensei! I shoot Thur-Sat with my university club. Should I expect any serious detriment to my progress with a four day gap between shooting? I can't go other days because they don't hold practice all for but Tuesday and I have a class that conflicts at that time.

    A few weeks ago during one of your live streams I asked about your STRING making jig. I wanted to know where you purchased it and what it cost. You were kind enough to respond but sadly by holding up a FLETCHING jig and describing it instead.
    An honest mistake I assume. Needless to say I'm still curious as to where you purchased your STRING making jig and what it cost.
    Just to reiterate, your STRING making jig, the Decut Elite on which you've made many an endless loop.
    Ps if it wasn't a mistake and you'd rather not say, that's fine too.

    Fast Flight or Dacron for an olympic bow?
    Depends it on the arms? the middle?

      Fast Flight or BCY. Dacron is for lighter weight bows and is more stretchy.

    Is the development of the skill constant with constant time application? Is it normal to have a great boost in the beginning and so struggle to get back to the standard you reached back in time, even if you never had interruptions in the training sessions? -I am new to archery, compound

      It is normal to improve rapidly at the beginning, particularly when changing from "club style beginner bows" to your own custom equipment. Then "plateaus" happen from time to time where you just don't seem to get any better, or start to slip back. This is perfectly normal and the only way is to just plough on through it - it seems to be the cause of many people quitting in the first year.

    How do I decide whether to get a 25 or 27 inch riser?

      25 unless you have a freakishly long draw length. 27" risers are hard to find, 25" is everywhere.

    would skill decay be used as an advantage with barebow? nice to give something to trad shooters so they have some reason for using bare bow XD

      madseanz that makes no sense. decay is regression and loss of progress trad shooters are barebow shooters, the difference is the materials and a plunger ....

      madseanz both are equally effected in trad you need to rely more on memory of feel and manually adjust and muscle memory can be lost or your muscles sim dont have the same strength or endurance. asin freestyle you might have balanced your bow with weights and stabiliser, but when you return to it it feels to heavy to hold up or the balance is off due to changes in strengthens muscles mass or endurance. your anaerobic threshold may have dropped too so lactic acid occurs faster

      Morten Jacobsen Morten Jacobsen i think You miss the point. It was a joke about how some trad shooters think their bows are better than modern bows. In the video he said that trad have an easyer with still decay to which i responded with the joke that its a advantage for trad shooters. You were right about the bare bows btw i shouldnt have put them in the comment. No had feelings :D

      madseanz tradies like blaming the equipment quoting a higher level of skill due to the lack of sights etc . and demonstrating how they don't know how sight works and calling a trash can lid radius for a good groop blaming modern materials for tighter group is a poor excuse since the human error factor is the greatest one regardless of the style . with trade you rely on muscles sensory to decide if your bow arm is right , while with a sight you have a visual reference , but you might have a bend in your arm or a high shoulder, a collapse etc and arrows hit no where where you aimed both styles have changes that effect the shoot but different emphasises or and different levels of cognition . why do you think trad shooters always say things don't work like target archery on trad ,its a different style ? its all about process, have a simple one sure there is less to muck around with but also more variables than a controlled multi step technique with checks and balances

    I have to disagree on this. I restarted archery this year after a 15 year break, by the second lesson of the beginner course I was as good as I'd ever been. Now, six months later I'm better than I ever was.

    Sure, it requires strength and endurance, but let's not overhype reality here. On my second day ever shooting I was able to stay on the range for 8 hours shooting almost nonstop, taking a break only for a 30-minute lunch. It's just not THAT hard on your body to maintain some precision over time.
    Second, there's a good reason why many people say "archery is easy." Of course it's not easy, but the amount of learning it takes to reach proficiency is nowhere near the same as golf, tennis, etc. which are much more technical and more physically demanding. One of the best shooters at my club is a fat guy who takes cigarette breaks every 30 minutes or so.
    Take a look at all the 50+ year old barebow champions drilling yellows all day long. Those guys couldn't jog a mile with a gun to their head.
    And lastly, there are people over 40 years old competing on the national stage for barebow who have been shooting for less than 2 years. Show me another sport where you can start over the age over 40 and finish top 5 in a national competition in just under 2 years of learning.
