    Coming back after a good (wow as it already been) 10 years since high level competitive regional shooting, and wow this instructional is so good (and i remember watching you film from your room!). Even when I was ranking well, I don't think i was ever taught these parts properly, and so it's been very annoying trying to figure it all out again. I keep having excellent groups now, but it's all over at different points of the board end to end and I've totally forgotten why. These will probably help resolve much. Thanks!

    Great to see you uploading again. Ive been doing archery for about 3 years now, had my coaching done last year. I was shooting "instinctive" and was ok, then i have an issue with my left eye, for a line for me has a curve in it, and reading is hard because the words are either so scrambled or a letter is missing. Apparently when i whent to a optician they found i have a gap in the irise or pupil, i wasnt to sure looking at the picture. Any way so at first i was actually afraid too shoot incase i couldn't, and that really scared me so didnt shoot for about a month. Im a right handed archer so one day after watching a archery video i couldn't stand it any more, i had to see if my aim was good just using my right eye, and it was...infact i would go as far to say better, i have a much better sight between my anchor and tip of my arrow, i also found the faster i shoot from anchor the more acurate i am, if i look too long i over think it, so for me as soon as im at anchor its pretty much a few seconds then i release, and even im surprised how accurate i am now compared to doing instinctive. Obviously ive got to get my eye looked at by the hospital and going threw that process. Sorry for a long comment, i just felt what you mentioned about instinctive verse not, really applied to my situation. Great video, as this helped me understand more about my process.

    I really enjoy your videos. You are one of my three favorite archery channels for teaching, with Jake Kaminski being another great channel. Between the two channels I have grown so much in just one month and have so much more I realize I have to grow. As my alignment of my form has improved I have discovered that my back muscles are not nearly as strong as I thought they were. I have gone down from a #30 bow to a #16 bow. One of the best, and humbling, choices I've made in my training. I have more control of my body and technique and I can practice for 10 rounds before I fatigue. With the #30 bow I'm tired after 2 rounds of a dozen arrows and I can't consistently fully draw into proper form or aim without shaking slightly. Thankyou so much for these videos. BTW, I think I'm using the same bow, but rebadged as the SAS spirit jr in the US. Thankyou!

    Excellent video and spot on. Coaching through the 80s and 90s we had a similar framework for aim, anchor, elbow, and loose. A relaxed wrist and that elbow position, around and seated (for a good draw force line), were crucial for a smooth shot. With the elbow in the right position, simply "loosening" the finger tension allows the bow to do what it needs to, and the released tension in the back and upper arm will naturally move the drawing hand backwards. The "loose" terminology is perfect for describing many things in archery to make it as natural and repetitive as possible.
    It was the late 90s when there was a big drive towards back tension and a "dynamic release". This change in terminology and mindset turned something natural into a forceful action that resulted in some dramatic, flamboyant and quite explosive shows that messed up many experienced archers. Pushing and plucking, hands flying behind ears, bows falling to the ground. Every time I see the KSL cycle I remember how it started and the struggles.
    For me the beginner has enough to contend with, so your aim, anchor, alignment (elbow)... and "loose"... is fundamental.

    What a great video. I can't remember seeing a better instructional video for beginning archers. And when it comes to recurve, I am in that camp. It's somewhat embarrassing for me because I used to teach kids at my archery club. We started them out with basic wood recurve bows. I was a compound shooter so did my best and made it work, but had I known these tips, I not only would have been a more effective trainer, but the kids would have had a much better experience. Which is how we grow the sport of archery. Well done sir !!

    Excellent video. So many videos teach the KSL shot cycle. Your 3 a's are so much simpler and accessible for the beginner. KSL is an excellent framework but way too complicated for we beginners. One problem that I have, and I would love too see you address, is holding steady. It seems like my arrow point wanders all over the target no matter how much I try holding it steady, leading to rushed shots and frustratingly inconsistent results.

    • @NUSensei
      @NUSensei  9 місяців тому +1

      Agreed. The problem is that you can't teach yourself KSL. You can read the book, but without a qualified coach, you're almost certainly going to get it wrong.

    Well damn……I have just taken up flatbow after leaving compound because of my spinal issues, now shooting a lower poundage I am enjoying the primordial feeling of shooting without out aids and I love it….but…..after watching this I am doing EVERYTHING wrong!….I used to shoot compound using numbers for timing….1,2,3,….1……to a degree it worked so I carried on. But of course trad bow is not compound and after watching this I now know EXACTLY where I’m going wrong. Shooting without sights does not need to be guesswork (instinctive?….mmmmmmh….), I have been getting all three wrong, especially alignment. My wrist is completely rigid and I just cannot get my draw arm around….until now…..this should be shown to ALL beginners (and a few intermediates too 😂). Yes it’s ok to be regimented, you’ve proven that, but if you don’t get all three right from the off, you’re never going to improve, only get frustrated. Excellent video tutorial, and one I am now going to use. Back to basics for the rest of this year and with this video, your video, I can only improve……thank you 🤙🙂

    I took only one class of archery and watched many videos to learn how to aim and I've been thinking a bit. Nobody ever mentioned that the aiming of archery is actually aiming with your two hands, the arrow flys along the line between your two hands. Instictive shooting is about the feeling between your eyes and your two hands. Anchoring and alignment and form is about consitentsy, better using muscles, avoding injuries, etc. that facilitate aiming. They are important but won't work without a good aiming method.

    Random thumb ring question on an older video, maybe it'll get answered by someone: I went down in poundage to properly learn how to use my thumb ring. The arrow tends to come off the bow when I feel like I'm at a proper draw with back extension. It stays onto the side when I don't draw that far. It looks like my arms and shoulders are lined up properly when I draw and keep the arrow in place, but I don't feel my back engaging. I don't know if that's because I'm not used to a lower draw weight. Am I overdrawing when the arrow comes off? I assume I am. Maybe it has something to do with how my thumb ring is actually contacting the string.

    Very good video, thank you very much for posting it. AIM, ANCHOR, ALIGN. I have a question. I am a traditional archer, I do not aim with the tip of the arrow or with any other method, how do I do the first step of "Aiming"? THANK YOU.

    • @NUSensei
      @NUSensei  9 місяців тому +1

      Firstly, being a traditional archer doesn't mean have to shoot without aiming. Unless you are shooting at a moving target, you are purposefully doing something to position your bow to point towards the target. The question is: what _exactly_ are you doing to get yourself into this alignment? If you do not have an "aim" step, then the immediate solution is to make one. If you're only looking at the target and doing nothing else consciously, then you're just guessing, and that is the antithesis of marksmanship. If your goal is to shoot purely "instinctively" like this, that's fine, that's just the standard you will be at. If your goal is to improve your groupings, you need to identify more reference points that you can check with every shot. Your reference points - and whether or not you "aim" - is a choice you make. If you do not aim with any method, then your groupings are a result of this choice.

    • @manuelgonzalezzambrano1989
      @manuelgonzalezzambrano1989 9 місяців тому

      @@NUSensei Thank you very much for your answer, it is very clear. For me it is very difficult to aim with conscious references, since I am a bow hunter and many shots are taken at moving targets or if the target is stationary, my shot will be very fast. Hunting archery is different from sporting or precision archery.
      Thank you and greetings.

    • @NUSensei
      @NUSensei  9 місяців тому +1

      @@manuelgonzalezzambrano1989 That's exactly the difference. If you are relying on instinctive archer, you are more depending on shooting with good form and tracking the target with your eyes more so than aiming.

    Hi @nusensei I’ve been shooting gap for 3 years now and I’d like to shoot “tip of the arrow” to a specific spot, however with my setup I’d have to aim off in both x and y axis. This doesn’t seem “good enough” at all considering what you were saying about being deliberate on the aim, I mostly have to guess, and I end up just being instinctive anyway. Is it normal to gap with tip of arrow off center on both axis? Should I look into fixing the x axis or accepting it as normal?

    • @NUSensei
      @NUSensei  5 місяців тому +1

      If you have to aim off horizontally, this is an issue with bow setup. You might need to address your arrow spine. Sometimes you just might have to compensate with your set-up, but the closer things are in line, the more repeatable it is.

  • @kalessin_s

    about aiming lower/higher dependently on distance, will it have to be memorized and used as a reference every time i shoot? for example, on a new target, if i know it is more or less at 10 mt, and last time i shot at 10 mt i was aiming for example at the bottom of blue and it was ok, will i have to keep those references? so even the first shoot could be more or less accurate? TLDR would it be beneficial to take my references at 5,10,20,30 mt and so on to know where to aim generally at different distances? thx

    • @NUSensei
      @NUSensei  9 днів тому +1

      In short, yes. Archers will keep record of what their reference points are so that they can get a hit on the first shot. In competition, you can't spend half the round figuring out what it should be.

    Morning all. I've been practicing archery for about three weeks now. I bought a cheapo Amazon 30 pound bow thinking that should be light enough. I can draw it and shoot as well you'd expect from someone with my experience. In other words, I can get the arrows flying in a straight line and in the general direction of the target.
    However the shoulder holding the bow and/or the bicep really hurt after 10-20 arrows. I have to take a day or two before picking it up again.
    I'm not a big guy and probably not in the best shape. My question is, is pain in those places normal for a newbies, did I over bow myself or is there a no no I'm doing in terms of technique.
    Any and all advice is welcome.
