  • What's the best 2.5 Sata 3 SSD can buy in 2018? Well today I take a look at the two heavy weights in terms of value for money and also quality, these are the Crucial MX500 1TB and also the 860 EVO 1TB from Samsung. And the results were quite suprising ^^.

    Tech YES City
    Brian, good that you also test the 'endurance', that has been grossly neglected by many testers while it does make a lot of difference. These days the gap between SSD's is not that large anymore in general but as far as I know the Intel SSD's - developed for server loads - still have huge dips for reading for longer filesizes (like gaming). It has been known for some time, Crucial offers more value/$, realistically speaking. With $40 price difference I would chose the Crucial, especially given that the read speeds are very close. With $4 price difference I would probably choose the Samsung.

    • @techyescity
      @techyescity  6 років тому +5

      Hey Peter, exactly the reason I started testing the very long endurance runs was that I used to use a capture program called camtasia studio, it was very drive intensive, and some ssds would clonk out after a long recording lol, so it became an important benchmark for me.

  • @michaelzoran
    @michaelzoran 3 роки тому +25

    I use both of those drives. They are both excellent. They are virtually identical in performance. The Crucial SSD comes with an excellent Cloning software and an excellent Management program. As of August 2021, I strongly suggest the Crucial MX500 rather than the Samsung for one reason - the Samsung SSDs are INSANELY OVERPRICED at this point! I bought a Samsung 860 SATA III for $50 in 2020, and a Samsung 970 NVMe for $50 in 2020. Now, those products are nearly TWICE as much money! It is INSANE to pay that amount of money when the Crucial product can be purchased for $59 for the SATA III version and $54 for the NMVe version.

      @Michael Zoran please take a look at my reply above to video. Kind of lost on some things and maybe you can help. For the sec I am buying a Crucial 1tb ssd drive. So it comes with software to clone correct? Is the build quality good on this ssd? I guess as how long the ssd last is a toss up in days to years and so on.

    • @michaelzoran
      @michaelzoran 2 роки тому +3

      @@joesphbaumgardner4579, yes, the Cloning software that comes with the Crucial SSD is excellent. The Reading speed and Writing speed of the Crucial one is virtually identical to the Samsung SSD in tests I ran.
      For some reason, both the Samsung SSD and the Crucial SSD both had slightly slower boot times than the original Kingston SSD that came with the one particular laptop. It was literally only two seconds, though. It was exactly 17 Seconds for the original Kingston SSD, but between 18 Seconds and 19 Seconds for the Crucial and Samsung SSDs.
      The two SSDs all last many years. You are not going to use up the SSD space unless you are a video editor doing this all the time.
      Also, it is Samsung that now offers a lower level of quality, even though they still have a higher price for their SSDs. I am particularly talking about the QVO model that is indisputably a lower level of quality and indisputably an INSANELY HIGHER price.

    • @joesphbaumgardner4579

      @@michaelzoran Much thanks for the time. Also the info which helps. I am old school and quality is a big one for me. Although quality control went out the door long ago as a whole in todays world. Stats on boot time you ran is not bad. I'll give you mine on my old HP Notebook 2000 HDD drive. In a nutshell about 2 plus min lol. Course I will say my drive is a 500gb and it is in red space low about 12 gb left. Just done with the laptop and drive. So switching out to the HP Elitebook 840 G2 i7. At this time now I'll dropped a Crucial 1tb ssd in it. I see also it has a m.2 card slot which will be for another day. So when I buy the Crucial ssd it " should " come with clone software correct? A disk, or already on ssd or go to website and download type?

    • @michaelzoran
      @michaelzoran 2 роки тому +3

      @@joesphbaumgardner4579 Yes. The Crucial SSD will come with Cloning Software. The m.2 input and SSD system on paper is much faster than the SATA III system. However, you simply do not notice the difference on things such as boot ups and restarts.
      Think of it like this. The speed of light is much faster than the speed of sound. But, in the environment of being near another person on the planet Earth, both the speed of light and the speed of sound appear to be the same type of instantaneous speed due to the fact that the distance travelled is so relatively short.
      In that same way, think of a boot up and a restart as a short distance travelled. It doesn't matter whether you have an m.2 or a SATA III SSD, because both are so fast that there is very little difference.
      The type of files that you do notice a larger difference between m.2 and SATA III are the very large video files such as recordings where the files might be 30GB or 40GB that fill up an entire SDXC memory card. In that type of "long distance" environment, you would notice the faster speed of the m.2 SSD.

      Some are built better and last better than others though.
      So you can have two good SSD's now, but eventually one will go from good to average while the other maintains.
      If you're on a tight budget then yeah go for the cheapest, but if you're not then it pays to get the one that's higher quality. Albeit in this case since Crucial's improved so much I'd probably go for it too if it were cheaper.

    I've considered several SSDs for upgrading an older lappy (DELL 5420 with i3-2330m 2x2,20 Ghz) incl. Western Digital Blue and Samsung 860 EVO. In the end I opted for MX500 500GB (these days I never go for less since I like to think that the more DRAM buffer is onboard the better SSD operates). The difference compared to 250GB 5400 rpm HDD should be noticeable, esp. counting the fact that the CPU is G2 socket and can be easily swapped for a i7-2640M 2x2,8 Ghz with more L3 cache and Turbo Boost.

    Happy user of an MX300 750GB here, upgraded to it from a Samsung 850 EVO 500GB in a new build due to the extra capacity with no real noticeable speed loss and much cheaper $/GB rating. I've been recommending Crucial SSDs for a couple of years now and that won't change a bit with the MX500 being so much cheaper than both the 850 EVO and 860 EVO.
    Been very tempted to pick up an enterprise Micron 1100 2TB off Amazon though; $375 USD for 2TB of SSD storage, using similar tech to what's in the MX300 consumer SSD.

      You might wanna keep an eye out on the following S.M.A.R.T attribute in Crucial's Storage Executive software: 173 Average Block-Erase Count. This shouldn't go up by more then 1 or 2 a day at most!
      I just last week found out that on my Crucial M4 drive something (probably chrome and the drives own garbage collection system) made this go up to 2700 which is when windows started to give me imminent drive failure warnings. and Attribute 202 has risen to 91% drive lifetime used up. All this in less then 1.5 years of drive usage (this used to be a secondary computer system that had mostly been turned of for years until my main system died halfway last year) Apparently, at least for the M4, 3000 writes is the expected maximum for a block to be erased before they start to fail. I monitored this attribute for a few days and in 1.5 days it went up to 2730. :(
      Apparently browsers like Chrome and firefox cause excessive writes to drives while idle. Anywere between 10GB/day and 60GB/day depending on the number of tabs open (And I usually have 20+ tabs open in chrome with youtube video's I still wanna watch, damn recommendation lists in UA-cam ;) )
      And the BX drives are rated for about 21GB/day of writes if the drive is to last for at least 5 years.

I've finally stepped it up into the SSD today with my first buy for a 2TB Crucial MX500 at an unbelievable $174.00. Probably due to mass production (supply & demand) more in supply, so lowered cost. Relating to temperature I do not have a dedicated cooler, but the front intake is next to the SSD, so it should get enough airflow. Was going for Samsung as it was a bit faster (did a lot of benchmarking back then) BUT then they suffered from data loss after a firmware upgrade so eventually went Crucial. Never went back. But any of these 2 will be my recommandation as well... Just grab the cheapest, which most of the time will be Crucial

    I use the free AOMEI cloning software on mechanical and SSD's. It so simple, it's free and seems to work on every drive I have ever tried on it. It does have a little quirk. Sometimes it changes the 2nd and 3rd partition letters around but I just change them back in drive management. It doesn't affect the system drive or the reserved partition. The price of the MX500 has plummeted. I picked one up this week for £75! I am deleted with its performance.

    The MX500 seems like the better purchase. Quick question, *For Adobe Premiere Pro Video Editing* I'm looking to add two SSD's to my editing machine so I can improve the read and writes performance. I currently have a 1TB Samsung 850 Pro for the OS and Apps installed. I'm probably going to get a 1TB drive for the project files. For the media cache and database aspect, should I get a 1TB or a 500gb ssd drive or can I go as low as 250gb's? I'm thinking 500gb since the cache will be deleted but I'm wondering will there be a performance difference between the drives. Note, I record videos in either 1080p or 4k. The problem with numbers on paper, is they don't really tell the whole story. For example if you put a lower end sata SSD against a high end M.2 SSD, it's on paper numbers will blow it out of the water by 5 times +, which is about the same difference between a fast mechanical hard drive and a standard sata SSD. However real world the load times between a mechanical hard drive and a sata SSD are night and day different, where as the real world difference between a sata SSD and M.2 are practically negligible. There is also preformance as the drive becomes full to consider.

    • @Barrosy
      @Barrosy 5 років тому +1

      @Michael Adel I found that over time the Samsung one might be able to keep up working better than the Crucial one. The TBW (total bytes written) has a value of 600TB for the Samsung and 360TB for the Crucial, which bassically means that the Samsung one should last longer for whatever work you might be doing on it. Realizing this video was published not quite one year ago... in that period of time one can now purchase the Samsung 2TB for $299, or the Crucial 2TB for $289 (Amazon and other sources).
    At the time of this video, a $40 difference might be a profit-point for a builder, or a major issue for someone short of cash. But not so much any longer. So for the end user there are two important issues here (even when this video was made):
    1) MTBF. While both have identical warranties, the Samsung has a far greater projected lifespan. I'll go with the longer-life, super-tested drive any day, especially if the difference is only $40 (or now, $10).
    2) Backup software is important. The Samsung clone software is easy to use-- so if one is not a tech and gets easily confused by such software, the simpler the better.
    So while these drives run neck-in-neck performance-wise, I find this video most informative in providing these two bits of information. To some people the software used or listed MTBF may not be important and they'll go for the low-dollar every time. For others though, the price may not be so important as long-term reliability.
    As me pops said many years ago, "Quality is remembered long after low price is forgotten." Both of these appear to be quality drives. Will they continue to be quality drives as that 5-year warranty runs out? Dunno. That's why the MTBF figures.
    Considering how close these drives are in price today, my question comes down to: "Which comes with the ready-to-go software and which has the greatest MTBF figure?" I generally root for the underdog (I have Crucial RAM in my system), but for a difference of $10, these days the price difference becomes moot and it comes down to pure specs.

      The real HURT is, when the SSD crahes - and a new has to be bought, installed, made ready to run as before. That black swan is the most weight in the decision - for me. 1 week ago - a 100 GB Acronis back up .tib - was unreadable...Custer Last Stand Hill...

    • @Wishbringer7
      @Wishbringer7 5 років тому

      @@raginald7mars408 Yeah, a hard drive crash is always "panic time". Which is why I am so very glad that hard drives are dirt-cheap these days. I bought an external 2TB hard drive (platter type) just to make backups. Because no matter how good the device, there's always something that can happen. The great thing is that today's SSDs are significantly more reliable and crash far less than platter drives. And the speed... when I installed an SSD in place of my old 7500rpm platter drive, my Windows boot time went from 45 seconds to 15 seconds. I don't even notice that boot time any more, because by the time I turn on the computer and by the time I get sat down and situated, Win10 is already booted and asking my passcode. And I saw this week that MicroCenter is selling a 1TB SSD for $102. Seriously, that is just really hard to resists. (Personally, I'd go for the Samsung on sale for $129, because I'll choose quality and reliability over $27 any day. Not to mention Samsung's awesome cloning software. :D

Should I get the MX500 as a new boot drive and put the old Corsair as a data drive. Or, should I get the EVO 960 as boot drive? Or, leave the Corsair as boot and put the MX500 as data drive? In short, is the 960 worth double the money (per GB) currently and would I notice any difference between the corsair and the MX500 or 960 EVO? P.S. I don't move large files regularly. Do you think i should jump on either and which one? And install a ssd and add 16 gb ddr3 or ddr2 depending for my son and how much of a difference do you think it would make? The division gets around 40-50 fps with his current setup in 1080p low detail and black ops 3 gets about 50-60 fps in 1080p all with low detail on. The stutters are kinda annoying in division and it also has some menu quirks in game not pulling up straight away. I got him the one x for christmas but id like to get him away from that and solely into pc gaming with me for bf1 and some other fps and rpg games. Remember he has the rx 470 card i bought for 155$ at best buy to use so the gtx 760 i can sell on ebay.

    if you was going to put it in a server you use the samsung Pro drive not EVO (far more reliable as they still use MLC and have about 2-4x the DWP on them even and dont use SLC cache so they stay same speed under any size of write conditions),
    unless i am wrong data is written directly to the NAND no DRAM buffering, the DDR ram on the SSDs is only used for PAGE table (as to why Dramless SSDs are very poor as they have to access the PAGE table from NAND on any access and any changes to the PAGE table have to be committed right away to the nand very slow)
    takes about 5-8 minutes to fill up the SLC cache before the drive slows down on the samsung evo and crucial MX drives (samsung Pro drives are MLC so no SLC cache so they are very consistent)
