Should he have kept the name "Johnny Cougar?"

from what i understand he didn't choose it and never liked it, it was just kinda' slapped on him by an early manager and bandmates 'cause he was kinda' country and it sounded cooler than Mellencamp... i'm glad he finally ditched it and took his own name back, especially after all of the stigma in his hometown about him, his blue-collar family, and their immigrant roots... he gave true glory to his family's name, it deserves to be the one he uses...

I find it tragic that he received the miracle of life, through surgery of his spinal bifida in 1952, and saw his beloved grandfather die warning him about the devil, but John has never realized that GOD loves him and everyone. He has not used his gifts to honor his creator. But it is not too late. I will pray for John.

You rock, girlfriend! You're very brave and tenacious! But I think I missed the part where John, himself, is all poor, poor, pitiful me (bcuz of his SB)? Still, he acts all puzzled and oddly innocent about why he's where he is... Despite the fact it was The Narrator who pushes the ole self pity button onto/for JCM (that's how I remember the video's takeaway)? I may haveta rewatch. But... honestly? I get kinda sick of watching regular people picking other regular people apart for sport on soc med (IN GENERAL)... And I'm starting to view THESE "tragic" videos as a false front (start out empathic -- til the snidely snark shark bites)... That it's okay to trash these subjects bcuz of their celebrity status. *That's just what I'M hearing.* Sorry to use your good news story as a soapbox or platform! But! Hey!.. y'all have a WONDERFUL, MERRY HOLIDAY! A nice, take us away from C-19, distraction, happy, fun-day (or two)... lol! Hi Sonic. Yeah, I fell in love with his music in 1979 when "I Need A Lover" came out. Loved that whole 1979 album. Picked up "Nothin' Matters And What If It Did?" (great title!) on the first day it came out, and I already knew he'd be a star. The albums only got better after that, all the way through "Cuttin' Heads" and the "Walk Tall" single a few years after that. Since then, he has become more of a cliche, but for 25 years, doing great music like he did, just amazing. Still my all-time favorite musical artist!

@@johnthompson1978 ....I don't know about JC going communist but they often lean to the socialist left in terms of their social-political-economic views. Trouble is, high tax socialism is on the decline because of low birth rates and general unsustainability. Plus, people like John, Bruce Springsteen and Grace Slick don't realize that their kind of wealth isn't possible under a system that gives everyone equal benefits. Funny how they feel they have a right to earn and fully enjoy their wealth, by defending the sacrifices made to get where they are. Went to school with John from grades 1-12. He was from a middle class family and most of his problems he caused because of his attitude. He wasn't a bad kid in grade school until around the 6th grade. I think he wanted to be considered a James Dean type in his teen years. As for the actors, musicians, and entertainers who preach to us the liberal/socialist agenda it reminds me of a song. I saw Johnny Cougar and the Zone in 1979 at the Swing Auditorium in San Bernardino California. They were the opening act for Rainbow. The Swing didn't give an unknown band a chance if the name sounded funny. They were booed and pelted with rubbish from the opening notes of their set. I'd seen this happen before to other bands and they all fled the stage after a song or two. John finished the whole set. Years later, when Scarecrow came out, I heard Minutes to Memories. The line "suck it up, tough it out, and do the best you can" stood out because I saw the man do just that on that night years earlier. Much respect, you're the real deal Mr Mellencamp.

I gotta give it to him. How he got to where he is is a mystery. He is not a musician. Nor is he a singer. What he is is a poet who can capture the subtle emotions of a generation of youth. I got lucky, I won a radio contest (KLOS) for front tickets when I got there(HOLLYWOOD BOWL) with my fairly new girlfriend . The seat numbers were a mixup They didn't exist, or if they had, We would have been sitting in the isle. So, They moved us to the pit, right smack! in front of the stage. My understanding this was reserved for his fan clubs. NO sitting. All standing but not crowded. It was nice and we stood on some sort of a wooden, plywood? structure. As soon as the show started we found out when everybody jumped to music and landed it would bounce us up in the air. It was so awesome. Everybody around us knew every word of every song he sang and we were all singing together with him. This was truly a magical night... John did not do an encore I didn't care When John and his band were on stage, they had given us everything they had. BTW, That girl She's My wife now.
