Good video, thanks! Now I saw this video 5 year after it was posted. But a quick tip. Don't ever link to unsecure pages (looks kinda fishy). It does not help with credibility. Make sure to make you homepage https right away :) And also, why write "TODAY ONLY" if it's not today only? Sorry for sounding grumpy. Keep up with the good content!
Honestly. Thank you so much for this video. I'm starting up as a personal trainer, and I honestly don't know much. The certification process just has us test out of a book, and I honestly dont feel ready for clients at all. I'm trying to learn more, and your youtube videos really help out
Same boat here man, the focus on importance of testing was key for me too to pick up on. We 'covered' it but the real impact and necessity of it was something I needed to get
I am not a personal trainer but I love your honesty. May I suggest something for you. Start your own business offering it for the lowest cost to your clients. People will pay for your time & & you will get more & more clients by word of mouth. Most people cannot pay the price that your competition is asking. As your business grows you can gain experience that will be invaluable. Just a thought for you. Good luck!
I can not stress strongly enough DYNAMIC STRETCHING!!! There are so many lazy ass PT's who either don't implement it enough or is flat out absent from their client's sessions - I personally know of a few, but to each their own. Funny you bring up the research on static stretching. About 7 months ago they covered that in a seminar I attended and I followed it up w/ additional research showing it does in fact seem to be the trend - Less static stretching. As a personal trainer myself, I really like to implement rolling as it breaks the muscle density and prepares you for the workout and the beauty is that it also works for post training as well. Great vid though - This is something ALL newbies should be taking notes on because it's evident they're just simply not covering enough in some of these mediocre certs they're offering to people. Personally, I believe they want your money more than they want you to be qualified in fitness coaching...
Thank you for being my mentor. I'm a new personal trainer and have been structure my workout exactly like you've said. I realized I'm lacking in a long term (macro) plan for my clients 💪
Omg thank you so much I'm a qualified sport Manager but I get a lot of people asking me to be a their trainer or create monthly programs for them as I'm an athlete my self....this video helped me a lot even though I'm scared but this video helped
I really appreciate your emphasis on functional assessments when you start with a new client and then every 6-8 weeks to check in. I have a similar education background so maybe it’s my understanding of postural dysfunction and muscular imbalance, and what that really means when you’re coaching someone. It’s not like I can just have someone to do a walking lunge and assume that because they were able to do it that it means they performed it optimally with zero compensation. Not to mention ignoring those things increases your clients risk of injury which is irresponsible on the trainers part and also means that client won’t be buying anymore sessions until they heal if at all.
Absolutely love this. My course feels like it was not in depth enough so trying to educate research and read as much as I can to have my clients better.
THANK YOU so much for this video! I’m just starting in my personal training journey & it’s so encouraging to find a mentor on UA-cam! Will definitely be watching all your videos as inspiration for my own fitness journey & the journey I will be leading my clients on. Thank you!!!
Hey man just wanted to say thank you! So much!! This was so helpful, I’m starting my first week of shadowing at the gym I just got hired at next week and am so excited but SO NERVOUS!! Haha this helped and put me at ease:))
Amamzin video found this so useful as I am currently starting my journey as a PT & found this useful remind of how to plan session ahead. Keep up the great content @criticalbench
Thank you so much for this video!!! I just started Personal training and feel like it is just a workout… i feel Like I dont know what I am doing sometimes. This video will help me put a plan in place. Thank you!!!
Find these a little intimidating, in the course for level 2 and 3 its basic questions, optional answers, so piss easy to pass... but obviously we want to provide a great service to our clients, and it just seems like that doesnt come with the qualification, i guess it's our own responsibility to develop that when we start working, but just prefer always being ahead rather than winging stuff and learning as i go personally.
Can you share this research about static stretching not increasing flexibility? Thank you so much for these vids man! I just got my certification yesterday and my business should be up within a month. I've been nervous about session structure but stumbling upon your videos is making me more confident!
Thank you so much! Im new to personal training. I think my biggest fear is coming up w/ quick effective workouts on the spot. Of course depending on the assessment is there some type of formula u have to know what to quickly have that person do. I hope this question makes sense! Thank u!
Tricky to answer because there are a couple ways to go about this. One is that you have a basic bodyweight program that you can modify depending on your clients strengths and weaknesses. Once you have been at this a little while coming up with workouts and exercises on the spot does get easier.
like your videos.. I am a trainer but need to increase my skill set as a personal trainer.. do you offer mentoring? or can you direct me to where I can get certified in doing better assessments and programing? I like to learn how to give a functional assessment so I really understand there limitations and provide better programing.
Hey Brian! If you see this comment I'd love to hear your response! So I'm a new personal trainer with an EXS degree, and want to come up with the initial consultation/assessment. I know you went over briefly what the assessment is, but where can I go for a more in depth initial assessment? Another video on this topic would be great too! :D Let me know please and love the videos!
The question is always for me is that how can I build the session if the client wants to loose weight. I like intervall training, can I combine lifting weights with plank or isometric or dynamic excersises? For example : Squat with jump for 30 sec - biceps curl 12-14 reps - 3 circles not much rest. And other pair of excersises. Or should I repeat one excersise at the sam time? I like supersets. My client is beginner though.
Hello! Static stretching has its place but is not the best form of stretching, especially for people who need movement in their lives. Here we are huge proponents of dynamic stretching, stretches that involve movement and help to improve both mobility and flexibility while heating up core temperature and ultimately are safer. Static stretching when used during and at the end of exercise has its place... but not in the beginning. Check out our new program that speaks directly to this topic... www.criticalbench.com/growth/metstretch
Depending on the individuals current fitness level and mobility, the same program could be followed as is. If there are physical limitations these can be easily modified
love your videos mate they help a lot. do you have a preference on what software or template you use when writing out a programme? or do you design your own? thanks Dillon
Hey! Great video- just subscribed, what does a good assessment entail? New to the PT space but I have been passionate about weight training for a long time, considering going for my certification so I can become a PT but these videos are great.
Thank you so much! Your videos have been helpful. I'm certified as a Group Fitness Instructor, but delving into Personal Training. What type of education would you suggest I pursue next? I feel getting certified as a personal trainer would be a lot of repeated info. Would it be more advantageous to strive for a degree in sports fitness, kinesiology, or something? Thanks!!
thanks for this info,i'm just certified as a fitness instructor can you place throw more light for me in that area?and am looking forward to get my pt lesson start.
I recently achieved my NASM certification and I have never tried anybody I am going to make a career change in doing this I am 100% all and just need to know the first approach when dealing with clientele whatever advice you can give me I’d appreciate it thank you and have a great day
I just got my diploma in physical fitness and will like to work as a fitness trainer, please I need your advice . currently working in gym but as a trainer also if some one like 40 up that want to lose weight what kind of exercise will I place them on?thanks.
When it comes to weight loss it is not simply about specific exercises. It is about consistency in exercising and having an excellent nutrition plan to follow. Both of these combined will allow for greater success. One thing to keep in mind however is this ... if your client is enjoying their program they are more likely to stick with it and keep it up and that is what is going to help them to continue to lose weight.
Hey critical bench, my first experience lifting weight was just bench press, no warm-up or anything, I'm trying to figure out how I would appreciate a warm-up. I think to my disadvantage I am a skinny/very mobile person genetically. But for someone who is just starting their movement and doesn't have my skinny genetics, how do you think I could approach this?
This video was very helpful. I’m a rookie personal trainer just got certified about 6 months ago!! I do have a question. Say I am training at a local gym or wellness center. Will that specific gym have a outline of what they want us to do as far as assesmebtsbor will we (the trainer”” need to have one already made up.!
That depends. Some franchise gyms have an outlined protocol/ procedure that they want you to adhere to. My personal experience is that privately owned gyms will allow you to train your clients as you see fit.
Hello mate. I’ve been a freelance personal trainer for a few years now. I’m certified but it’s been a while since I sat the exam so the minutiae of certain data points aren’t fresh in my mind. I applied for a job at a corporate gym just before the COVID19 lockdown and got the job, but they said I still have to sit a short written exam, before I can begin work after the lockdown ends. I live in Asia so it’s not going to be all the legal stuff ACE focus on. It’s not very litigious out here and safety is also unlikely to be the focus of any exam. Do you have any experience of written examination for employment, and if so, do you have any advice or guidance on what to expect? I’m expecting the focus to be basic anatomy, nutrition and sets, reps and rest for different goals. I don’t anticipate much in the way of ACE programming protocols or in depth cardio programming etc. At least I hope not! I hope you can help 🤗 Cheers 💪
It is fine to stop coaching/ training a client if you find the relationship is strained HOWEVER, I strongly recommend, & this is what I've done in a similar situation, is to have a very sincere adult conversation with the client explaining that you feel you they may have better success with another coach and then provide them with at least 3-4 names of other coaches whom you recommend. This way the client feels like you have their best interest at heart and less like you are "firing" them.
Kim Fyffe hi, this fall under another category of training called GP refferal exercise trainer, the trainer should be certified as exercise referral and have an extend knowledge of health issues and how to create a program accordingly taking into consideration all risk factors. But still part of the job of all PT as not all the gym goer are fully healthy, hope this help in answering your question partially

Criticalbench yes actually it seems he cant do excersises for 30 sec so he do it as long as he can.
I’m a trainer I haven’t heard about the FMS assessment. I always do an assessment with clients. Is this a course or something you can go by online?
Great advice!
Great video good to watch i have a question i love to train good with my exercises but too great on programme writing you got any tips or videos?
leroy skeels You need help with programming?
Hi Criticalbench. So, are SMR and static stretching not beneficial for a new client? This is NASM's guideline.
Hello! Static stretching has its place but is not the best form of stretching, especially for people who need movement in their lives. How would you perform an assessment as a virtual training during the COVID-19 pandemic
Very helpful for Programming. How do you relate this to training the 50+ year old person? Do you follow the same workout outline?
Thank you very much!
Depending on the individuals current fitness level and mobility, the same program could be followed as is. If there are physical limitations these can be easily modified

Optimax Performance Training Haha!! Love it #sexylegs
It’s crazy, i thought some of this was common sense but I guess there are really some clueless trainers out there! Great vid btw!

Yes! Mentor me!
Hi Kristen, Coach Brian here. If you have a question, just post it here and I’ll do my best to help you out. Thanks for watching. - Coach Brian
Optimax Performance Training Thank you. My first question is related to the burnout or fatigue at the end of the session. What is the science behind this? My concern is preventing overtraining, especially with young athletes whose nutrition might not support extreme training and in whom physical exhaustion may lead to mental burnout.
it is a fucking shame that you can become a "certified PT" with some weeks courses
