The bench press is popular. It's the lift most guys want to 'show off' at the gym in their younger years. Getting to 135 lbs in grade school and hopefully 225 lbs towards the end of High School. At least that was the case for me.
225 LBS is the milestone or benchmark for most lifters. Whether you can press it for 1 rep or 15 reps, there is great pride in all guys at the gym early in their lifting life and for some, later in their lives.
It's important to make a distinction when it comes to the content of this video... this information is strictly designed to help performance of the exercise and get you to pressing 225 lbs for at least 1 repetition. This video is not necessarily intended to help with chest muscle development, building a more aesthetic physique or increase overall muscle mass.
While a lot of those things will most likely happen from training like this, this technique / method is solely designed to get you from 0 to 225 lbs on the bench press. If you're looking for chest muscle development, building a bodybuilders physique or increasing your muscle mass you're not on the right video. But we do have all of that content on our UA-cam channel :)
Follow this method and watch your numbers increase! Thank you for watching this video, it's my pleasure to help aspiring lifters improve their strength output on the bench press and finally hit 225 LBS on one of the most popular and greatest strength exercises on the planet, the bench press.

Update6 months and I'm still loving this bench. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxo_64lVTGMk7y4aXTPxPOcQ3YTLyQ6kYV I use it almost daily. I've gotten used to the small wobble and it's no problem at all. Love the storage, it folds right next to my weight set in the garage and hardly takes any space. I wish the covering material was a little bit tougher. I have a feeling that in a couple years it'll tear, but the bench is very well priced that I would just buy a new one.3 month usage review. Awesome bench for someone looking for compactness and storage. I did have to drill a couple holes to adjust my preferred seating position and leg bar position but that's only due to my personal preference. It's very sturdy for normal workouts, but for anyone going above 100# dumbbell press it wobbles ever so slightly. I would probably go with a fixed bench if that's the case. That being said i can accomplish 99% of my normal gym workout with this setup. Very happy with the purchase.

Saw crazy gains in my squat and deadlift, and bench is next! Decided to try my max today. Started at 135, then 185, then 205, and it was all feeling really good. Great tutorial for beginners. Only thing I see that wasn't quite emphasized enough was when gripping the bar at the top try and bend that bar by turning your pinky in to help tuck the elbows & the other point totally missed is the ideal trajectory of the bar from the chest going up which should go slightly back on the press movement. Other than that 1 of the better bench tutorials have seen.
On a personal note as a older (43) guy with 1 really banged up shoulder do find doing warm ups for the shoulder joints before getting on the bench is a great help and I also do 1 slow set with just the bar first that isn't explosive just due to having a really bad right shoulder otherwise going straight in to being explosive the jolt at the end isn't fun. Also my set of 5 with just 1 plate a side (25kg plates & 20kg bar) I do a fairly slow down then a quick pause before exploding up, by that weight the bar doesn't have as much upward momentum causing as much of a jolt at the top on my shoulder & my shoulder feels better for it.

    • @Criticalbench
      @Criticalbench  2 роки тому +1

I appreciate the feedback. Yeah there’s a lot to say on this particular lift of course and certain things are more emphasized then others. Ultimately it’s a lot to take in for somebody in one video. Thanks again 😊

Hey Timothy. Thank you. The best path would be to not rush your way there. But have an idea of your current ability and follow the same warm-up approach with lighter loads. If you're not quite to 225 lb maybe make 185 lb your goal. And then lower all of the warm-up poundages, making 95 lb your starting weight.

I don't think he is actually bouncing the light weights he is just substantially strong to the point he can change the direction very fast like he is lifting styrofoam weights.
Yes is is lifting it very fast up use in the C.A.T. acceleration principles. That speed will decrease as he lifts heavier but using maximum up speed you are training your CNS system to get ready for some heavy weight.

I benched this week on Monday and used this training method for inclined bench press where I warmed up using the 45 lb bar then worked my way up to 225 lbs on incline and successfully made it go up like it was 135 lbs 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼

I was trying to hit 90KG (200lbs) bench for the longest time. I watched this video last night, as today I was planning on hitting it for the first time ever... And with this technique I DID!! AND IT DIDN'T Stop there! I tried the 100kg(225lbs) and hit that aswell! This has been my goal for the longest time. Thank you for the tips, and giving me the confidence to try!

That’s so great! I know it seems fairly simplistic but often times the basic and simple things will get us the best results. The key is not to overdo your warm-up or overdo your prep but do it with intention and very clear goals. So happy this worked for you as it does for so many and it did for me as well. Stay strong and stay after it.. you’ve only scratched the surface!!! The same approach works no matter what your goal is as long as the weights (load used at each warm up stage) are properly selected. Best wishes Coach Chris

Did 190 for first time. I weigh 182. Started my gym journey 5 months ago. Used to weigh 162 and could only do 135 for about 4 reps. Prior to that I used to struggle with 135. So 190 is huge for me. I half rep'd 225 today after doing 190 for 4 reps. I think I did too many warm up reps. I did 12xBar, 12x135, 4x185 before jumping on 225. Im going to try again in a few days using your model.

After coming across this video last week, I tried this twice and was able to hit 225 today with no spotter. I hit 225 earlier this year once and haven’t been close to it in years. I’m pretty athletic but upper body strength, specifically for bench, has always been an issue. I also would do a decent amount of reps beforehand before trying to get to 185/205/225 and now realize that in some cases, less reps is more. Thanks for this tip! Going to build off this to be able to get more reps at 225.

I'm doing 225 5x5 after I do heavy incline press but my shoulders don't feel that great on the flat bench, but never ever use collars if you don't have a spotter because its super dangerous if you get stuck you won't be able to dump the wights off the side of you so it's much safer with out the collars if you don't have a spotter It's happened to me before with a 300lbs bench attempt I had no spotter and thankfully was able to dump the wights off to the side.

great advise - especially with the warm ups. i used to warm up way too aggressively and burn out by the time i got to my heavier lifts. plateaued for a longgggg time doing that.
now i do bar for 10-15, 135 for 5, and 160 for 1 or 2. then i'll do my heaviest set for 5-8 then bump it down by 10-15 pounds each progressive set. i've leaned away from trying to hit 1 rms for now to build up explosive strength. my current best is 170 for 9

Why wouldn't you use a collar on the bar? Very simple. You are trying to see your max reps and if you get stuck you can dump the weights to either side. Others can stay the hell out of your way for your bench press space.
