Thanks for the review. I purchased a set for my 2003 jazz bass since I play at a large church that is live cast every week on UA-cam and I was turned down the last time I played due to 60 cycle hum. I played these last week and they sounded fantastic. No hum and still tons of low end. I also got quite a few comments on how great my growl sounded. I am a big fam of these 10/10.
Jayme Lewis - The Bassist They were single coil and the stage lighting was causing the big issues. Between the strobe lights, color changing lights, and even electronics from the smoke machine could have been the issue. I move around quite a bit so apparently some areas on stage was much worse. Thanks again my friend and God bless.
@@IamLanceShelton Yes they are whisper quiet the entire set playing or not playing. I have a few other guitars that I can not say the same for. I love them. Also, copper shielding normally reduces hum does not eliminate it.
Ive been playing for a long time and just bought a squier 4 string and going to pull out the factory pickups out and put in the aguilar pickups and put in the preamp as well.
So would these be your highest recommendation for a jazz bass? I'm looking to upgrade my Sire V8 with the best possible pickups. I trust your opinion. I have an OBP-3 preamp already. I play a variety of styles of music but I think I like playing heavy Rock the best. I have Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound pickups in one of my other basses but I want noiseless pickups and something that suits Rock as well as Country and even some Metal.
Greetings Jayme. Enjoyed the review. I think I will be dropping a set of Aguilar's AG5J-HC into my Lakland Skyline Joe Osborn after hearing them. I've already added an Audere 3-band preamp. The stock Hansen USA pickups are OK, but I miss the sweetness that I heard in your demo--probably because the Aguilar's are a bit lower in output. Anyway--thanks again.
Came for the review, subscribed for your playing skills! You play, man! :D I am still deciding between these and Lindy Fralin's- I need a P+J set. Any suggestions?
Thanks so much! Sorry for the delay in response. I'm sure you made your decision already, I've not had the pleasure of playing the Lindy PJ but I'm sure their great. Did you end up getting them? How do they sound?!?
Yo Jayme. Happy New year. I have a question. I recently purchased the Aguilar HC picks. I realize that poles on the A & E strings are higher than the rest...is this intensional...if so can u please say why. Also I realize that my G & D strings are lower in volume than other strings...any comments please.
thank man :) I've actually turned that into a LIVE STUDIO JAM video that's in editing stages now and will be available at lajamtrax(dot)com hopefully in a few weeks (with tabs, a play along track, and an instructional video too). I'll definitely let you know when it's up!
I remember this video and took your advice. Put these in two squiers...a VM pbass and a CV jazz. AMAZING. SO GOOD. I think I'll be putting the 5 string model in another Squier VM bass I snagged. Figure it's a cheaper and better option than a new SIRE I've been looking at. Thanks.
Just one more question: Which Scale(s) do you use in the Intro 0:00 - 0:05? :) Really enjoyed your Multiple Pentatonic Over One Chord and Chromatic Pentatonic Video! You're teaching quite well!
Are you using an aguilar pre-amp too? i'm about to buy a mexican Fender Jazz Bass, wich is a little noisy bass and i was thinking on using the AG-4J-HC or maybe the AG-4J-60 what do you suggest???
Thank you! I'm honored! The bass I used in this video is actually passive - no preamp at all. I think it sounds great without it! And if it isn't too much to ask, would you mind doing me a favor by sharing this video for me? I'd really appreciate the help!
hey jayme ,man, i have a squier jazz active v bass, 5 string, im bout to throw in the ob3 pre amp and these pick ups in. what do you think about that? but i was also in between the bartolini pickups with the ob3 pre amp, any ideas?
Those are diminished scales and chromatically descending minor 7th arpeggios :) It's from the solo on my song Sedagive, and actually there's a complete transcription, playalong track and instructional video for it available at lajamtrax (dot) com/wwtbn.html
I've found *My Pickup* made by another high-end company, but they'd be useless without my *Aguilar OBP-3SK/PP* 3-band Active-/Passive Preamp so I can certainly attest to their quality! 👍🏼
Thanks Richard! Actually the folks at Bassic Gear Review did a spotlight on it here: thebassist.net/my-gibson-grabber-with-bassic-gear-review It's one of my favorites for sure!
I want to new put pick-ups in my squier fretless vm. So im thinking about buying sd weather report pick-ups or these ones. What do you guys think is the best Option?
It's Fender's Gen4 Noiseless. I found out on amazon, gen4 noiseless are 50$ cheaper than the aggie plus the gen4 are being used by the fender elite basses. Though I would more likely get the ag 4j-hc.
It's a string mute :) it's used a lot for "The Motown Sound" and jazz/swing/funk styles. It's probably used for other music, too, but that's what I've seen it used for :)
Jay the Wizard I believe those are for keeping strings from ringing during tapping. Mutes for "the Motown Sound" are located at the bridge. Because when it's at the headstock, it doesn't work the moment you fret a string. :)
Jay the Wizard Yes, Maas was correct. It keeps the open string overtones from ringing out while I'm really laying into the bass. I like it for slap and tap passages :)
Hi. Have you ever tried out ..... wildepickups dot co.. ? Maybe interesting. As Bill Lawrence is one of the great pickup makers besides Leo Fender and other greats. Bill Lawrence was responsible for quite some Gibson pickups...
Its bollox you willl NEVER get the same tone from a HC that you can get from a single coil.Might sound ok on a YT vid, but believe me you will never get any HC from any company to sound like a single coil jazz bass pup.
Thanks, Jayme! I ordered a set of these yesterday, thanks to your excellent review. Can't wait to drop them in!!
this dude just kills it on bass, I need to practice more
Did you record the dialogue, shave every hair on your body, then demo the pickups?
As silly as that question sounds, the answer is yes :)
Those pickups sound amazing. ...very punchy!
Then immediately grew his hair and beard back...How in the hell did he do it????
You didn’t think we would’ve noticed? ...... 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Damn dude! Came for the review and stayed for AWSOME PLAYING!
Just installed these on my Fender Jazz Passive Bass. They sound fantastic!

@@SanNjigDo these keep things quiet the whole time? Also, have you also tried the copper shielding?
@@IamLanceShelton Yes they are whisper quiet the entire set playing or not playing. I have a few other guitars that I can not say the same for. I love them. Also, copper shielding normally reduces hum does not eliminate it.
@@SanNjig Cool. I actually thought about getting them a while back. Also, I thought I was signed into this account when I asked lol. Thanks!
Love that slap line. Going to learn that one for sure!
thanks man! I'll be posting a transcription of it soon :)
Awesome pickups man, I'm a fan your playing! Thanks for the video! 👌👏
Thanks Julio!
Quick question. Do these HC pickups only work on a passive bass, or could you use them in an active Deluxe jazz bass too?
Yes, I actually have them on an active bass now :) they sound great!
Thanks Josh! Absolutely man - the first scale is a Pentatonic scale and the second is Mixolydian. Hope that helps!!!
Jayme
Hey Jayme,
So happy I stumbled on your page. Fantastic lessons, content, and wisdom. Thanks so much.

Thanks so much Alexis!!! Glad you're enjoying it all! Anything you'd like to see in upcoming videos or posts?
SICK recording man, great job.
Thanks Mike! I'm glad you liked it!
Your bass sounds crisp and clean and balanced thank you for the video
Lincoln Calvin Thanks Lincoln, I'm glad you liked it!
Ive been playing for a long time and just bought a squier 4 string and going to pull out the factory pickups out and put in the aguilar pickups and put in the preamp as well.
Awesome! I'm sure you'll love them!
The M Bass J is Alder and the P is Ash, I believe. The P position is 60's and both basses are Passive :)
this bass is passive but I have the OBP-3 in two other basses. I really dig these HC pups but the 60 are great too :)
ya man i love the bridge tone i get on these :)
My God! That sounds amazing!!!
you're very welcome sir!
Aguilar pickups are the best !!! TNX for posting !!!
Thanks!
Great video Jayme!!! Do you know if these Aguilar pickups have more output than the fender’s custom shop ‘60s?? Thanks!!
Came for the tone, stayed for the groove ;) U ROCK
Thank you!

Soundin killer, perfect mix too - rumble’s just right and nice and thiccck
Thanks!
Thanks man! I use D'Addario nickel wound :)
btw what did you play from 4:15 and on? How did you improvise that? I would love to learn such a Jaco-ish line!
Or 50 cycle hum in Europe :P

Thank you Chris! Yea, that OBP preamp is hard to beat :) Thanks!
that's called a FRETWRAP by Gruv Gear. Basically the Victor Wooten hair-tie idea but a little more convenient and useable :)
I think I'm sold =O What a great bridge growl!
Thanks Trevor!
Came for the review, subscribed for your playing skills!
You play, man! :D

Please could you say something about the resistance of these? Cant find the specs anywhere. Thanks!!
great demo, thank you! i love aguilar's gear too! which strings did you use?
Nice review and great sound!
Thanks Wayne! I'm glad you liked it!

I just got myself a pair of these. Fully conscious that I am nowhere near your playing level, but hey...Thanks!

That's awesome Jonathan, I bet it sounds inredible!
i have not but i'll certainly check it out :) thanks!
Great video Jayme!
Thank you Enrico!
Thank you for making videos. Haha, not to sound fan boy. I just really enjoy.
Hey! What woods is your Mbass made of? And the P-up position is '60-s or '70-s? Is this bass passive? Thanks!
Wish the demo at the end was played without compression :p

I'd say go for it!

Great video and great playing as always! Any thoughts on the difference between these and the Nordstrand hum cancelling pickups?
Hey Pat, thanks! It's probably more than I can elaborate here on this comment but I'll definitely speak on it during next week's podcast episode!
awesome, where can I get it? on you website? or will it be kind of a youtube video tutorial? Just love it! But its hard for me to learn it by ear...
Man I love your vid. My Q? Is if i get this pick ups do I have to get the preamp as well? Thank you .

Hey, great work!
On question: which Scales do you use from 4:27-4:28 and 4:35-4:37, sounds like Jazz/Fusion!
Would be nice, if you answer! :)
Well you also described about every pop song from 1975-1990.
I would love them as much as you do if they gave me money to do reviews and promote their beautiful work!
It would be fantastic to get a paycheck for doing these demo videos, maybe I'll ask for one next time.
Jayme Lewis The thing to take from that comment is that your review comes off as little more than a commercial.
after putting Aguilar AG-4J-HC in my geddy lee bass , it made it one of favorite basses again
Nice! Ya, I bet that thing just SINGS now!
yup yup. i can solo pickup and set the tone up perfect to my liking without that annoying HUM
Nice! Ya, its a wonderful thing :)
thats what im trying to do next. glad someone else tried it out and like it 😀
i bet it would sound great!
hey jay, what is your signal path? i guess u are running DI sound?
man, i have a squier jazz active v bass, 5 string, im bout to throw in the ob3 pre amp and these pick ups in. go for it!
hey jayme ,man, i have a squier jazz active v bass, 5 string, im bout to throw in the ob3 pre amp and these pick ups in. what do you think about that? but i was also in between the bartolini pickups with the ob3 pre amp, any ideas?
very nice playing! Is that an ash or alder body on the mbass?
This is Alder I believe, but Jon Maghini would know better than I. He made it :) Thank you Jonny!
Those are diminished scales and chromatically descending minor 7th arpeggios :) It's from the solo on my song Sedagive, and actually there's a complete transcription, playalong track and instructional video for it available at lajamtrax (dot) com/wwtbn.html
Ya that's a DI signal from an A-Designs REDDI going into Pro Tools HD.
hey man nice vid. thats a standard passive bass? no onboard preamp?
Correct, no preamp. Just passive pickups :)
I've found *My Pickup* made by another high-end company, but they'd be useless without my *Aguilar OBP-3SK/PP* 3-band Active-/Passive Preamp so I can certainly attest to their quality! 👍🏼
ya i love the obp-3. I've got them in quite a few of my basses!
I see that Gibson Grabber in the background. You should do a video on that Bass too
Thanks Richard! Actually the folks at Bassic Gear Review did a spotlight on it here: thebassist.net/my-gibson-grabber-with-bassic-gear-review It's one of my favorites for sure!
Jayme Lewis - The Bassist I just watched it and it sounds killer. That’s too this day my dream bass
is the a preamp is the bass by any chance?
Great playing!
What is wrapped around the neck at the nut
Does someone know what is that thing on the top of the bass? I mean on the top of the arm!
asd asd
Mute. Most slap players use them. Usually their girlfriend's hair tie.
Wow! These sound amazing!
Thank you Nick!

Lil'bassist254 I've not used the other ones you're talking about, but I just installed a set of these in a student's Squier and it sounds great now!
Ok thx man!
Lil'bassist254 my pleasure :)
Should I get this or the Gen 4 Noiseless Jazz Bass pickups? Can't find any comparison of the two.
I don't have any experience with the Gen 4 you're talking about, but I do think that these Aggies sound killer!

Ya sorry, wish I could help! I'm sure the Fenders are fine too. Hope you enjoy whichever one you end up with!
I have a squier active, I would serve these aguilar
Do i need another preamp to install on my fender standard passive jbass??
+ricardo palomo Need? Probably not. But it's certainly nice to have :)
thanks!
what is M Bass? Who makes them?
Has anyone tried the 5-string version of these?
Much appreciated!
No, beacause of the 16th notes and the nice use of major scales in the groove... At least, I recognize some Jaco infuence...
Do they make a P style pickup as well?
Yes they do. regular and hot's
Thanks! I'll have it on my site and on here, if you subscribe or sign up on my mailing list at my web site you'll find out the minute I put it up :)
Those triplets though
Dom Hudson :)
