    Thanks for this! For me, tied for best are the Lindy Fralins and the Norstrands. EMG JVX are fun too, though a bit hyped up for traditional jazz tone purists.

    A big thanks to you bass basic! I used your video years ago to choose the EMG JVX for my bass. I used the "24 Volt Mod" adapter to be able to power these pickups without any alteration or routing needed to my bass. I've been extremely happy with the tone overall. People interested by these have to understand that the EMG JVX pickups come with custom volume and tone pots that HAVE TO BE USED in order to install the pickups. The only significant drawback of the EMG JVX is that the tone pot when fully rolled off doesn't have that desirable resonant peak effect that I get on my other passive jazz bass, the response is a LOT more linear as you roll off the highs with the custom JVX tone pot. I thought it was also worth mentioning that because the EMG JVX have such extended high frequencies response and can only function using their active built-in preamp, they carry a non negligible amount of white noise right out of the bass that can only be removed by rolling off the tone pot a bit. I have only tested these pickups with 24 volts, maybe on 9 volts the white noise floor would be lower? While that white noise is NOT a problem as the vast majority of people won't even notice it, it is still there and it DOES somewhat restrict the flexibility of tones you can get if you want to record a really clean bright loud D.I. signal without any annoyance or distraction of white noise. The EMG JVX pickups ARE HUM CANCELLING, there is no hum with them at all, but still the level of white noise is not perfect at maximum volume while recording. With this in mind, considering that the Nordstrand pickups (while comparatively being fully passive) fatally have to use a construction similar to the JVX and because both are HUM CANCELLING (which also explains how similar they sound tonally), I would probably recommend the Nordstrand Hum cancelling passive pickups (or any similar fully passive product) over the EMG active pickups ASSUMING that the Nordstrand pickups are 100% noise free, which is NOT something that I have been able to test as I do not own the Nordstrands.
    Otherwise, I thought that the 2 other best pickups for most applications were the Dame Sanctus and Lindy Fralin. It's interesting to observe how people all over the comment section identified these same 4 pickups as being the most desirable overall as well. I think a lot of this preference has to do with the clarity that comes with them, as well as the perception of a balanced frequency response. I would be really interested in hearing all the pick ups that sound muddy and dark on a jazz bass made out of an Ash body and a pure Maple fretboard, maybe it could generate a very pleasant result...

    For some reason, the actual tone on the fender 74 set grabbed me - they're just so quiet and low output-- the notion of putting those into a bass and buffering them to bring them up is what I'm entertaining -- that being said, I liked them all for different reasons. Thank you for your vids.

    EMG JVX Hands Down the clear winner here; Followed by the Nords then the Danes and the Fralins ... although the fralins and the Nords sound VERY similar, the Danes have that good clarity, the Nords have better punch.

  • @craigsteels835
    @craigsteels835 8 років тому

    Thanks for doing this and very well done! The differences in the first three sets are very subtle. I was surprised at how little difference there was for the hum cancelling pickups as I expected them to sound less like single coils. I guess I'll have to see on the bridge and neck pickup clips if there is a difference. I think a lot of the "apparent" better sound of some pickups is a difference of the EQ'ing or gain (i.e. lack of correction for the differences) in each recording for example the Fender 74's sound like garbage but a lot of that is that they have less gain and they would probably sound very smooth and especially in a mix. This is very good for hearing how much "bite" each pickup has. For example the Dimarzio DP123's had noticeably less bite. My experience that I don't like active pickups was also verified here but that's a matter of taste.

    Hi all... In my opinion It all depends from what you're looking for... if you're looking for a round/warm/buzzying sound probably the Bartolini are the best suited set for this purpose.. Dimarzio's DP123 are very similar although sometimes a little more aggressive than the Barts... definitely I like these two sets which are light years away from the sound produced by the EMGs ...

    The all have a different voice. Honestly I could play any of them tweak them to my liking on my amp. The EMG actives really jump out there at the end which sounds cool for a solo bass and drum groove but I think that sometimes a mellower tone works better in a mix with other instruments. Great job on this comparison. What was your favorite?
