AG 4J-HC is winner for me. ;)
Really impressed by those HCs! You wouldn't expect to hear that much growl out of a humbucker. And it still retains the J character. Big thumbs up!
AG 4J-HC are the winners for me and, in absolute, the best HC pickups heard on a jazz bass .. hats off
I could care less about the pickups, what kind of hats are you wearing they are incredible? Seriously!!!
+audioxt I think Jonathan's cap was a Kangool. Mine is from Kevin and Howlin in Dublin. Real nice handwoven Donegal tweed! We're into hats! :)
Couldn't care less, couldn't!
It's the secret behind the Aguilar sound... ;-)
What a great player JM is! So groovy. They all sound great, but I love a fuzzy, crunchy , responsive and brilliant sound from something not overwound.
the AG 4J-HC for me. freakin awesome sound!
On the rock/pop section he changes his plucking position. He plucks near the bridge pickup with the 70, but closer to the neck pickup with the other ones.
Love the 60 and the HC sound
My impressions:
60s: I love the tonal character. It's almost as if the bass is singing because of those overtones.
70s: As what Dave mentioned, fundamentals. Not as colorful as the 60s but does the job well on the fundamentals.
HC: To my ears, this sounds like the 60s (colorful overtones) with more treble.
HOT: This sucks. Haha! Yeah, probably good for heavily distorted music where the bass tone is usually buried.
I love the tonal characteristis of overtones so I'd probably get either the 60s or the HC. Though I might get HC because that increased treble will save me from changing strings too often. :-P
Perfect observation... 🤟
I put a set of AG 4J-HC in my Jazz bass, they are outstanding and the best of all the pickups I've tried, to my ears and playing style anyway. Thanks!
HCs in my FJ and my mind is blown
Great video! I love when Dave explains stuff and Jonathan has so much groove.
+altrogeruvah Thank you! Jonathon and I have been friends many years and we had a blast making the video. You are so correct. Jonathan can OWN a groove!
Loved your Aguilar videos both with Felix and Jonathan, hope to see more stuff from you guys in the near future! Thanks Dave!
That was very helpful. I'll be getting a set of the HC pickups
Great video Gregor! I've been waiting for someone to make a comparison on those Aguilar pups.
Hey,
that's a terrific video idea and a great execution.
I got an open box deal on the AG-4J-HC and put them in a DIY bass I was making and it sounds phenomenal :D
Love that midrange bite of the 60s
The AG 4JHC's are just magical!
Amazing video. Cheers guys x
My Jazz Bass has SD pickups and they sound exactly like HC ones. I wish I had another Jazz with those juicy 60s or 70s installed though
I got some AG 4J-HC's for my 4 string and liked them so well I got AG 5J-HC's for my 5 string. On this comparison, the HC's sound like the they split the difference between the 60's and 70's.
Interesting to know which pickup Jonathan used to solo on Dave's bass line at the end of the shoot ... my guess ... AG 4J-HC 1st candidate, AG 4J-60 second ...
The hum-canceling are the winners for me, the most clarity and growl in the sound. The hots, I can see the use for heavy music, but it's also a great example of how overwinding kills the high end.
The tone knob was in a different position for everything, and the bridge was never demoed alone.
Dave nice explanation of all pickups , Hot sounds , dont know the word to use , covered up while slapping but was great for finger style.
Thanks Jonathan , now I got to learn all that you played , palm mute was fine .
A killer combo would be a HOT at bridge and a HC at neck.
Great demo!
my bass is AG 4J-HC!! very nice good
Inline coil humbuckers are a nice option for bass. The pickup still sounds like a single coil because you still have each given string being picked up by one coil. It's a little harder to do on guitar because the very middle of the pickup has a volume drop off if you bend a string into that area.
Aguilar + Lakland = 👌 Very nice!!
Groovy bass playing!
cool guys, cool hats
would have been nice the hear only neck or bridge PU by itself though for each type of PUs.
for me the 70s and HC sound best and pretty similar to each other, HC with a little more input @ Hi mids. but you won't get any hum - great for blending both PUs togeteher the way u want ---> good for studio =)
Thx for the video!
the HCs are my favorites
HC !!! Best modern jazz bass sound!!
I was amaze at the AG 4J-HC's brightness, but I still like the "honky" tone and "thump" sound of the AG 4J-70.
70's I want them
nice demo
Do you know any Suggestion for the Heights of the pick ups on the 4j-HC. I want to get the almost same tone in the video.
60s win, for me. More midrange. In the others I notice the mid scoop.
Please could you say something about the resistance of these? Cant find the specs anywhere. Thanks!!
Ag 4j hc
HC for me, an amazing upgrade for my squier vintage modified jazz
Hello. Quick question please. Are ur G & D strings lower in volume than the A & E strings. I'd appreciate it response. Thank you.
Bought some 4j70s for my Sire V5r 🔥
I wonder if they planned the matching hats.
Why no run-through with a pick? For those of us that play punk or faster/heavier music, it would've been nice to hear a comparison - I'm thinking the HC is still probably the best bet.
Honestly the quest to get a earth shattering tone from my bass tone from my jazz bass has been insane I feel
This comment in my soul lol
Nice comparison. Noteworthy though is the fact that Jonathan doesn't play with his right hand in the same position for all pickups for the Rock/Pop section - hence that section isn't an accurate depiction of the differences between the pickups. The rest of the video is very enlightening.
AG 4J - HC SONORIDADE INCRÍVEL.
Does all of their staff wear drivers caps?
Somebody knows how he get that sound on some notes of the finger funky? Expecially on the higher notes he gets some kind of slappy sound
SERÁ SE ESSES PICKUPS AG 4J HC DARIA CERTO NUM BASS 05 STRINGS ?
To my ears and for my sensibilities:
The 60s sound distinct from the others and better (for me)
The 70s are crisper. Not my sound.
The Hum Canceling ones sound like the 70s, but it might be worth it to be noiseless
The hots sound great! I can't tell if I like them better than the 60s, but maybe.
All great pickups and great playing, man!
What is it with bassists and newsboy hats?
I would have expected the AG 4J-HC to sound like the 60- or 70-model, just adding humcancellation to it. Sorrily it delivers a significantly different tone. So I can't have humfree and 70s tone?
Hard to really get "noise free" with a single coil pickup. You can always use a noisegate. Ttuthfully, you can get the HC and dial up the 70s tone with your eq.
Can the 60’s pups be installed in a jazz with stacked pots that have vol and tone per pickup? I don’t want to replace the pots.
Of course
its me or the hot have more bassy sound like flatwound ?
60's sounds the best but the HC are close!
Oh!…them AG-4j HC❤❗️👍🏾🥂🎈🎸🍾✨Hit the mark for me! 🧔🏾♂️👌🏾🎈🎉🔊🎶
What pickups were used for the intro line?
+Josh Chambers AG 4J-60's.
70's is the best
Andre!
hcs are so good!!!
What strings were used?
USBlues mostly EAD&G 😉
Did he use a compressor?
Hey, it’s the secret.........
I found the 60s and HC the best all-rounders. I liked the 70s best for slap and finger funk, but lacking with Rock/Pop and palm mutting.
The Hot has a place but I'd rather go with a Humbucker if I want those pronounced mids.
Is your bridge pickup longer than your neck pickup?
They always are
need a fat tone so I'm going with the hot's .. thank you Aguilar!.
Is there a Aguilar precision bass pickup demo?
an*
+Lorenzo Bass Master46 Yes there is check on the Aguilar channel.
no
Do these work on active basses?
Of course
For a completely objective comparison the tone and volume controls should've been the same for all four pickups …
+at0mar All the examples had both volumes all the way up and the tone control all the way up.
Are you sure? I can only guess from the relative positions but it looks to me that that changes from HC to HOT.
+at0mar Hmmm.... on a second look it appears that the tone knob was moved a tiny bit on the 60's pickup. Everything looks consistent. I am going to have to keep a closer eye on Jonathon!
Mmm.. so... on the 60's the tone is a little closed and on the 70's is all the way up?
60s sounded best to me.
60s 🎶😎
Can I put these on my active J?
sure
60’!!!!!!!!
Great demo, and great player, but too much attack on fingerstyle to hear the notes clearly!
Bass hats
tone knob is not in the same position, so this comparison is not totally true, thou we get the impression of the different pups
I noticed that too. And also they don't switch between the pickups to compare the sound and hum. I had to shield my 4j-70's because they were too noisy.
Which one.....? The original one will do the job, no need to spend on those pickup which make tiny difference.
+1 HC, wide open, lotsa harmonics
I'm between the 70 and the HC... You demo palm mute but no pick? SNOBS! :p
AG 4 J HC is the best
HC wins it for me!
+mrpositronia I have to agree with you ._.
3:47 4:00
AG 4j Hot is more laud and clean...
I'm risking my throat here... I DO think the Aguilar AG-4M are better than the original Ernie Ball MM ones.
60 and hot for me.
It shouldn't cost more then 50 bucks !!!
Who the fuck lets someone draw all over their lakland with a sharpie
The HC's beats them all
