I always look at the arrows...I tell people that ask me when I bowl how to get better, I always tell them its consistency, and only making 1 change at a time. So to keep their ball on target, forgetting about rev rate or speed, pick an arrow and get low, as you release the ball, act like you're shaking your hand with that arrow, hand the ball off right to it, extending your hand out after releasing the ball. Then from there your starting point, speed, standing height, etc all have to do with your bowling technique. If your hips move, eyes wander, shot is short (early release) then the ball just goes all over the place. If you can consistently get the ball to the target arrow, then from there you change something here or there until your shot feels 'comfortable' and accurate. Good stuff here as usual! Y'all are great, keep it up!
So I had a chance to work with the great CK Moore. I was a dot, then an arrow, back to a dot, back to the arrow targeter. I just could never get comfortable with one or the other. I was so concerned about being perfect on my target. He talked to me and worked with me. He said, the only place I need to worry about is where is the break point. In my house, down lane at 44 feet. Using the rule of 31 I started to target down lane and my whole game changed. I was a 187 avg bowler. Just couldn't seem to get better. Once I change my targeting to the break point, it's like strikes became so much easier to aquire. Also I spent hours and hours on ten pin spares, my nemesis. Now I make about 87% of them. So I strike more, and I make more ten pins. 221avg now. Targeting is extremely important. What works for me might not work for you. Try different things. I have a friend who only looks at the 3-6 pocket, and his ball breaks into the 1-3 pocket like a rocket. Keep trying to find what works, I have another friend who only looks at the foul line. I can't do that. But it works for him. Anyways great vid as usual. Thanks.
I never really worked with him, but I bowled a scratch league here in New Braunfels and CK was part of that league. I wasn't aware of who he was at first, just thought, holy crap, this guy's good! After a couple weeks, I looked him up and sure enough, found out he was a PBA member and had a championship. And yes, he won that league and threw a 300 against me (I actually shot 267 that game.) Great guy!
I’m up 16pjns in average this year over last to 217 , I contribute the bulk of this to your tutorials . I’m having a bunch more fun as I’m now able to break down what the lane is telling me each week a bit more . Thanks guys !
there's a great practice session for targetting depths. Start in your main comfort place on your house shot. Strike twice in a row. Now, more three boards left with your feet and target, adjust your targetting depth (in this case usually closer to you if you are right handed) until you double. Move another three and three, adjust depth of target until you double. Do that about 6 times, then make the reverse moves back to your "home" spot. NOW move right three and three and adjust your depth until you double. This is going to usually be further down the lane if you are on a house shot and right handed. Repeat move a few times as able due to probably being around 2 or three board.
I also look at the arrows and boards around the arrows. When I tried to look down lane the glare of different lights at different alleys impacts my ability to be consistent.
This video helps a lot. I appreciate it because i seem to struggle a lot with targeting. Mostly pulling the ball but sometimes I can seem to get the ball to the right side. I always seem to space out almost when delivering my ball because i dont really look anywhere on the lane and dont look at my feet. I just kinda throw the ball but i visualize where i need to get the ball before i start my approach. I love watching both of you guys on tour too and hopefully this next season both of you guys can get some wins.
I appreciate you guys and all your experience put down in video for us. I bowl no thumb and have for about 13 years now. Consistency is 80% but that 20% could me getting lazy at the end of my approach or just not looking at my target. I'm gonna pay attention to my footwork next. TY guys.
Thankyou! Very helpful. My kryptonite is the 10 pin. I either pick them all up, or like last Wednesday in league, I missed all 8. Arrrgghhh!!!!!! I kept adjusting my angle…but into the gutter it went. Finally, on the eighth one, I swore I was NOT going into the gutter. I missed left. Mission accomplished, but still did not pick it up. Keep in mind, in warming up before league, I made 20 straight ten pins. Smh
My focal point is mostly down the lane when I line up my hips, shoulders, and swing but as I release the ball, I see which arrows my ball rolls over as it goes down lane, from the arrows at 15 ft to the arrows further down the lane, to the tracers. My drift is very consistent.
I am right handed and left eye super dominant. So when I think my ball has rolled over an arrow target, it is often missing 1-2 boards to the right. So I normally move my target 1-2 boards right of where I want the ball to roll. I found out about eye dominance many years ago when shooting skeet. I kept missing. My friend told me I might be left eye dominant and suggested I shoot left handed. It worked with shotgun and later with archery. Eye dominance can be checked easily using your finger held out. If interested, do a web search on how to determine eye dominance.
I am a look at the arrows on the first shot and then when it comes to corner spares I find I do best when I stare directly at the pin(s) I am trying to hit and try to keep them locked on during the approach all the way until the ball is 80% of the way down there. Might be seeing you guys at the East Coast Clinic !
I always had that problem. I was always told that the farther you look out, the more likely you'll pull it. But I haven't bowled in 18 years. Can't afford it, and have a torn tendon in my shoulder. I miss bowling tho, when it was cheap and I was younger. lol.
I always look at the dots on the foul line and there is a patter of wood grain which is about 3" wide and 1" long that I target. It repeats as you look left to right. It depends on the lane center and manufacturer of the lanes. Some manufacturers do not have this marking and if it does not then I look at the foul line dots.
I think you've just explained why I keep missing high when I try to move left a little (eg. left foot at board 30) but am able to hit the target and make adjustments when necessary while playing more on the right (left foot between boards 15-25). Thanks!
I am a right-handed bowler who drifts randomly several boards right. I target the breakpoint on my strike ball and the pin on the spares. My left leg is significantly longer than my right leg, and the pain from arthritis in my right hip causes my chest to dip forward when I step with my right leg. All these things make my approach challenging. Consistency is my biggest problem, but I'm getting better.
I’ve always looked at the arrows for targeting, and a few times I’ve tried looking down at the dots at the foul line, but I feel like I’m going to fall over, lol. I still drift a little bit right sometimes on my power step, so next time I practice, I’ll pay more attention to what board I start on as well as the what board I end on.
Have been almost exclusively a down & in bowler but with stronger equipment have been opening the angles as you say. In doing so, do I walk along the diagonal from feet to target mark ? Say standing 37 and targeting 21 as Kyle said.
The best way to practice is to not leave them in the first place. The second best way is to try to hit the ten pin at a 45 degree angle with your spare ball for right handers or the seven pin at a 45 degree angle for left handers.
I'm probably a bit of an outlier here but I've always been a pin bowler. I might look at the arrows once a game. Just shot 703 tonight on a 203 average.
A post I struggle with is hitting my target as I move left. You mentioned at the end that you "angle your body a little bit". Is there a way to measure "a little bit"? Do you angle proportionally to the angle you are trying to create, or is it a feel/guess/random thing?
Consistency is the key. If you want to hit 8, then you should finish your feet around 15. You have half the width of the ball plus the distance away from your leg. That accounts for about 7 boards. That is if you are bowling straight or not. I personally stand in the same spot on the approach, hit the same target and slide on the same board. I stand perpendicular to my target not the foul line. Standing in the same spot is very important. If you place your foot on then same board before you start your approach and hit the same target and slide on the same spot, then your ball will react and move the same way every time. However, if you move your feet one board left and do the same approach and hit the same target and slide the same board, the ball is not traveling the same path. It has now traveled farther right by a inch or so down the lane at the half way point or the target break point. The ball can hit the pocket differently. If the lanes are blocked and you can't miss the pocket then this is not a problem. I have been able to hit 12 or 13 and 8 or 9 and still be in the pocket. But on a tough shot, you will be lost and score low. If you want to practice this, put a piece of tape where you stand on the approach and a piece of tape where your foot slides at the foul line.
I’ve heard of the 7 board rule but just curious on what you mean by you stand on the same board as your target?? Does that mean your going straight/sideways with your ball motion?
@@razorbear4222 That is not what I said or meant. You stand in the same spot on the approach. You slide to the same spot at the foul line, not the same board where you stand before your approach. You hit the attended target at the arrows. Another thing I was going to mention is that he said a guy would try and hit 10 but wound up hitting 12. If he was aiming 12 he would hit 14, etc. If you think about it, you are actually looking down on a angle to the arrows. It might look like you are hitting 10 when in actuality, you are hitting 11 or 12 because of the angle of your eyes to the arrows through the ball. I had someone watch me and when I said I hit the second arrow, he said I did not. He stood behind me and watched where the ball actually was at the arrows. The most important key to be a successful bowler is doing everything naturally. You walk on the approach as you would down the street. You swing you arm like a pendulum naturally. The more natural you are, the more accurate and consistent you will be. Then it is just a matter of choosing the right ball and reading the lanes as they break down.
You don’t mention getting ball to break point window. When I was a kid 40 years ago a hooked the Columbia polyester line all over the place. Now that im aarp I’m much better off the toe. I can’t seem to line up hooking it because my break point never looks correct with whatever board or arrow I’m trying to hit. Thanks guys.
I think it would help your videos if you define vocabulary (or point to a video that has that vocabulary defined). What does "closing" or "opening" the shoulders/hips mean?
I struggle most when i have to open up my angles, i find it difficult to hit my target down lane that's what i'm practicing lately (forcing myself not to play in my comfort zone)
One thing I've been taught: Is it easier to throw a horseshoe accurately 5 yards away from you or 15 yards away from you? It's generally easier to consistently hit a target closer to you than further away... Unless you're Steph Curry or something
Question, If the breakpoint down-lane is the true target, wouldn’t focusing solely on that spot reduce variables? It seems like aiming at the arrows could still miss the breakpoint, even if the arrow is hit. Could you elaborate on the value of focusing on the arrows versus the breakpoint (or vice-versa)?
Many find it easier to hit a target that is only a few feet away vs at the breakpoint As for the value, most high level bowlers read the lane front to back. You want to know if that early spot ur ball is going through is getting through the oil or if it is hooking immediately
I like to target the arrows but have ended up going dots (but lack consistency). When practicing my local center is constantly changing the video backdrop often to a very light pattern and the glare makes the arrows vanish
Hey guys I just wonder if both of you Kyle and Brad have full-time jobs and if so what do you do for work, I always wondered that because I don't think the tour in Bowling will sustain your income expenses
@dv8davidsaporito766 well that's pretty amazing to get that much money that's great I hope they're saving it for their future and putting some away each month because housing is crazy expensive
I still think Kyle could live off bowling alone (tour season and sponsors) although maybe not with the hip surgeries and the kid but generally the top guys can live off bowling and sponsors and the lower level guys often get a job at a bowling alley. In brads case during his prime he was also making enough but right now he’s probably making most his money off UA-cam and sponsors
I cannot look at the arrows or dots, I'm a lefty that stands left foot on top of middle dot right foot shoulder width apart one foot in front and stare down at the 1 2 pocket just move straight forward and let the ball release about left side 5 boards in slight hook and boom!😮
Is there any reason why you feel like you MUST look at the pins? Because if you looked at the arrows or dots or even the markers (if the house you're bowling at has em) you'd likely do way better.
I may be a psycho, but I look at the pins and line up based on how I know my shot shape is. If I try to aim at the arrows it completely ruins my release and angles
Seems like when I watch the pros on TV, their eyes look like they are staring way down the lane and looks like they are staring at the pins or the break point??
I love how great of a coach Kyle is in these types of videos. Definitely an option to explore once the tour career is over.

As I always say, these videos are perfect. No bs, you actually teach.
“If your a straight guy out there, your good at this” 😂
I used to look at the arrows. I now look at the dots just in front of the foul line. Big improvement for me.
I look at where I lay the ball down. I want the ball to land on the lane the same place until I need to make an adjustment.

I use the dots past the foul line. I’m back over 180 using this method and it’s helped a ton with spares (and a new Storm Ice).

i have an interesting method. i look at the front dots for putting the ball down and try to follow it through a specific arrow
Great content guys. From Malaysia
Do you walk dead square to the fowl line?
Or, when you open up your angles, do you walk more parallel to your target line?
I will initially look at the pins then look at the arrows to see what adjustments are needed for my angle then I look where my feet are lining up.
Have been almost exclusively a down & in bowler but with stronger equipment have been opening the angles as you say. In doing so, do I walk along the diagonal from feet to target mark ?
Say standing 37 and targeting 21 as Kyle said.
The thumbnail goes hard, no edit.
You guys should talk about flat spot I found that helps me a lot
Are yall bowling in Vegas this weekend?
What is the best way to practice hitting the two biggest splits . The big 4 and the 7 10 splir?
The best way to practice is to not leave them in the first place. The second best way is to try to hit the ten pin at a 45 degree angle with your spare ball for right handers or the seven pin at a 45 degree angle for left handers.
Brad and kyle can you teach the drfit please for a Lefty and when to use it

Would have been such a nice touch to have done this with a head camera of some sort.
Me who opened my body up and slide 3 boards left consistently and throws pretty straight but I also throw 19mph with a ton of hand 😂😂

@craverys5706 if it's their full-time job wow I can't imagine that's a lot of income
@JSBowling2011 UA-cam with 100k subscribers can earn between 5k and 15k per month... they 190k subscribers so almost double that...

watching this video knowing i throw 10 diff shots in a game LOL

When I need to hit 9, I need to look at 6-7
Dots at foul line..visualizing down lane where I wanna hit..
I Watch my ball roll over 3 points
Seems like when I watch the pros on TV, their eyes look like they are staring way down the lane and looks like they are staring at the pins or the break point??
4th lol
It want allow me and let me in😢
to file for the benefits.
Look at the same thing every time. Markers, arrows, dots, or foul line. NEVER the pins.
