The NBA as a product has been getting better. The skill level is insane. Being the biggest guy on the court only works now if you have a polished game to go along with it like Embiid. Shaq averaged 13.7 PPG in the 2006 finals, even less than Antoine Walker. Not a single game where he scored more than 20 points and had 2 games where he scored less than 10 points. He would probably struggle to average over 25 PPG in his prime in today’s NBA.

I think the initiative against foul baiting has been great. I don't think there's anything I've enjoyed more this season than watching James Harden lose the ball trying to tangle himself up into innocent defenders for a whistle that never comes. I've never understood why Harden got so many calls in the first place. People always said Harden was just "taking advantage of the rules", but that's BS. Harden was actually BREAKING the rules. Kicking defenders, hooking them with your arm, etc. are offensive fouls. What Harden took advantage of was the referees giving him bogus calls for some strange reason. At least until this year.

I 1000% agree zone defenses and allowing defenders to roam makes todays defenses better than pre-zone defense rules. Meh. If MJ could shoot threes, he'd have shot them in his career for the same reasons you mention. Jordan's primary skill was his quickness and his legs, not so much his shooting accuracy. His FG% was always inflated by his constantly being bailed out by the refs, but even besides that, his bread and butter game was taking it to the rim and drawing fouls. MJ's mid-post game was deadly, but not because of his shot-making; rather, his athleticism and verticality made him a mismatch against any 2-guard in the league at the time. Recall that in the 90s, you had tons of 6-2, 6-3 Dee Brown types at off guard. MJ feasted on them, but he could also outjump even the Drexler-type big guards. In his prime he'd routinely jump 3 feet in the air, creating a ton of space on his opponent, and shoot an unobstructed shot. It's what makes him a scorer, rather than a pure shooter. Many players at the time were better spot up shooters--Reggie, Mark Price, Hubert Davis, Ray Allen, Steve Kerr, Jon Paxon, Peja, Anderson, and many others. I'd argue Jordan's hands were too big for an optimal spot-up shooter. Teams like the Knicks and Pistons (and the Shaq/Horace Grant Magic) who could intimidate Jordan at the rim and force Jordan to the outside consistently had a lot of success against him. The fawning documentaries and Oldhead Stans gloss over all Jordan's games (particularly against the Knicks) where he scored 23 points on 30% shooting, and was constantly bailed out by the refs. In his later years, as this channel documented, MJ lived off the refs, who, had they been credited, would have been in the top 10 in the league in assists with all of their gifts to MJ. The Superteam argument against Lebron (though off topic) is so stupid that I just want to get it off my chest here. MJ didn't have to go to a Superteam *because he owned the league and the league built Superteams FOR HIM in Chicago* ESPECIALLY in the 2nd 3-peat when the Myth was at risk of dying after Shaq beat him. The refs conspiracy is interesting since Karl Malone and Shaq got more free throws than MJ. Did the refs make MJ shoot 83% from the line ? Did refs make him an elite mid range shooter ? Did the refs improve his 3 ball from 20.2% in the 80’s to 35.9% in the 90’s. The reason MJ has a high fg% is because he’s an all time great slasher, a great shooter from 10-20ft and he takes low volume 3’s at 33%. Fouls normally don’t count as shot attempts so refs calling fouls wouldn’t boost his ft%. Shaq did beat MJ and was a top 3 player in the 90’s but the context is that he beat a rusty MJ. MJ played 17 games And shot 41% that season. The following season he played 82 games and shot 50%.

The problem is that I can't tell whether it's age or just conditioning. I don't think LeBron is 100%. He's moving different and his body looked kind of out of shape(by LeBron standards). But he appears to be getting better physically with each game, so I assume a lot of it is conditioning. So he might actually still be the best again or close very soon.

60’s/70’s ? Absolutely since there were way more possessions. 80’s/90’s? About the same with slight increases/ decreases to certain stats depending on the decade, system, and surrounding players. Steals and blocks would be the most likely stats to increase. Less spacing means it’s easier to help on drives , get deflections and Jump in passing lanes since the court is more congested. With blocks same thing applies. More mid range shots and posts ups are easier to block than 3’s. Players get the same amount of shots at the rim though. On the contrary, rebounding might be harder for guards since big men are closer to the paint. Teams averaged more turnovers in those eras. Efficiency was generally worse too.

They were still effective but with less spacing, you’re relying more on your roll man as opposed today you usually have your roll man + 3 other shooters to kick out to as consistent options. Assist % is an estimate of the percentage of teammate field goals a player assisted while he was on the floor. Chris Paul is just behind Stockton all time at #2 in assist#. You had the extreme high assist guys like Magic and Stockton get 10+ assists a game balanced with guys like Shawn Kemp who averaged an extremely low 2 assists a game. Stats were easier to come by in the 80’s than the 90’s just like stats were easier to come by in the 2010’s than the 2000’s.

He put on 40 lbs his first year in LA and by the time he left he had put on another 50 lbs on top of that. biggest misconception about lebron is hes unwilling to play in another system. lebron in miami was a system player who only took efficient shots most of the time. hes adapted to the three point shooting of todays league. he can play in any system just like alot of the other nba players. on mjs bulls, having lebron pippen kerr rodman and jud would break the 90s nba. his outside shooting would be top of the league; his driving would be intimidating; his passing would be magic escque and his athleticism would be dominique level. crazy

Lebron would still dominate of course but it’s going to be a big adjustment from Wade averaging 22 ppg on 51% FG to Scottie averaging 20 on 46% FG during the 2nd 3 peat. You might think oh that’s not a big scoring difference between 22 and 20 ppg but that’s with Chris Bosh pitching in 17 ppg vs Rodman’s 5 ppg. It would be Lebron’s best defensive supporting cast ever though. Taking 23 shots a game is not easy and in the Bulls offense, you have to take 23 shots a game or you lose important playoff game.I’m not sure why you mentioned Steve Kerr when the old Ray Allen Lebron played with was better than the best Steve Kerr. Lebron LOVES pick and roll drive and kick basketball. You can do that on Jazz with guys like Byron Russel, Jeff Hornaceck and Stockton who shot 37-40% from 3pt. You can do that on the Sonics with Sam Perkins as a stretch big alongside Schremp/Hawkins as shooters. You can’t do that on the bulls with Harper shooting 29% from 3, Scottie shooting 33% from 3 and Rodman/Longley taking no 3’s.

If you put LeBron in that era during that period, coupled with the fact that there was zero on-ball pressure on the perimeter because off the dribble 3 point shots were scarce, he’d shoot 38% or so from 3 if he played back then.

In the 90’s, teams were taking 10+ a game and defenders were actually focusing on and contesting shooters. Sure there were plenty of times just like in the 2000’s where guys like Stockton and Nash would pass up open 3’s to dump the ball into the post or run the pick and roll but players were no longer afraid to take them. If Mj played today, he would adjust to league averages and take more 3’s. If Lebron played in the 80/90’s, he’d adjust to league averages and take less 3’s. You don’t get better at 3pt shooting taking less 3’s. Sure Lebron’s %’s would improve during the few shortened line seasons but that long2/corner 3 distance actually helps someone like MJ more than Lebron.

I'm not a fan of big lists like this just on general principle because there's no meaningful criteria that anyone would take the time to apply to such a large number of players. So the rankings will always be contradictory and/or wonky. Nick's list is certainly that. At the end of the day, I think the ultimate criterion for ranking players is who would you pick to start your team with if you had the choice. LeBron is the best player I've seen since I've been watching basketball. If I was starting a team and had my choice of anyone who's ever played, my pick would be LeBron. So I agree with Nick's #1. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was before my time, but by appearances he does seem to arguably be the GOAT, so I'm cool with Nick's #2 also. Other than that, I thought a lot of Nick's list was kind of crazy. But it's something to talk about, which is it's job I guess.
I've been saying this for a long time MJ in this era at best averages Jame Harden numbers. More versatile/athletic defenders, zone defense, and we're in a golden age for guards so he'd be facing a great PG/SG every other night.

MJ is better than everyone today, I agree he was the cash cow, but a lot of these guys lack fundamentals and have low basketball IQs. MJ knew how to play in a system, he played PG and had like 7 straight triple doubles. If he has shooters like LeBron he would dominate.

I was just thinking about this, actually. Zone made perimeter players evolve, but for years it made bigs devolve. Their traditional skills could no longer be used, so bigs just sort of atrophied for awhile. So I've always felt 90s centers were better than post-zone centers because 90s centers at least still had their skills intact, even if they wouldn't work as well today. For a long time, there was no comparison. But when I look at Embiid and Jokic, I can't say that anymore. Things have definitely changed.

I'm guessing the Warriors. I don't think the league would mind the Suns winning, but I don't see any particular storyline or incentive in it. The NBA's not going to allow LeBron to get another ring, and I would imagine that they don't want Kyrie to win now because of what he represents at the moment.

@@Jason09_ Yeah, it's where everything seemed to point. Steph is getting older, so it only made sense to have Curry win and get the most out of his popularity at least one more time in a season where all the other big names are in bad situations. It was virtually seamless.
As void as the ppg argument is, scoring during MJ’s era (1984-2003) was 101.9 ppg. Scoring during Lebron’s era (2003-2022) is 102.1 ppg. The lowest scoring era of all time is the 1940’s at 73.8 ppg. The highest scoring era is the 1960’s at 115 ppg. This goes to show how meaningless the semi zones+ illegal defensive 3 2001-02 rules are compared to the shot clock, 3pt line, paint widening, and a multitude of other rules changes and points of emphasis.
Embid and Jokic have reached top 5 in scoring. They adjusted. Embid by stretching out when needed and Jokic by becoming one of the greatest passers at any position.
I haven't watched much Magic Johnson. Steph is a game-changer when he's healthy and his shot is on. But Steph's body is too fragile and his rhythm inevitably gets broken by injuries. Things can throw him off his game a lot of times. So for me, it's mostly about reliability with Steph. When he's grooving, he's so atomic that he breaks the game. But his problem is maintaining that groove.
Olympic defenses are what MJ went against in college. Complete unrestricted zones with no defensive 3 second handicapping the defense + legal handchecking. The way defense is supposed to be.
As a big Reggie Miller fan, do you believe he was a better player than Klay Thompson? Asking cause he made the top 75 and Klay didn’t. I think they’re comparable but Reggie’s playoff numbers and efficiency indicate for me he’s a little bit better.

It took a Generation for a center to crack top 3 in scoring and to this video credit Embiid has an outside game of shooting the 3/ taking jump shots instead of playing down low in the post which media pundits criticize him for. In actuality they should criticize him for not being a better passer. Jokic scores less, can take his game out side, can dribble but most importantly can pass thus does not have to rely on jump shots because points are points and he can mix in some post up play to keep his offensive attack unpredictable to defenses. I don’t entirely agree with this. Shaq was somewhat stoppable pre Zone. If you watched Dennis Rodman and the bulls vs Shaq, double teams could really slow down Shaq.
That was baby Shaq. Even baby Shaq required a double team, but Shaq's body hadn't fully matured into the monster he would become yet. No one is literally unstoppable, but Lakers Shaq is about as close as you can get.

The Celtics are playing exceptional D, but something is going on with Durant as well as the exceptional D. He looks mentally unfocused. He's basically just giving them the ball. I don't think the league is ordering him to do it, but he's not his normal self for whatever reason.
I also noticed how physical the celtica were allowed to play on defense against KD compared to the other end when tatum and brown get calls. I suspect that won't happen with Milwaukee
@TheNarutodbzss19 They are so annoying. Some people are once again using that BS claim that it's "90s defense" Durant is facing and that it shows how much harder scoring was in Jordan's era. Every time someone is allowed to get away with some fouls they call it "90s defense", when the same things were fouls in the 90s also. And for Jordan in particular, the referees would foul out the entire Celtics line-up by the 2nd quarter if they dared touch MJ like that. Plus the Celtics' defensive scheme wouldn't even be legal in the 90s because they're crowding Durant with zone defenders. There's little "90s" about this defense except that it's as good as people like to lie about 90s defense being.
The closest Rodman-era player to LeBron I can think of(only in terms of type, not talent) is Rodney Rogers. Rogers was a big, tweener forward who had some athleticism and could shoot from outside. I tend to use Rogers as a gauge of how Rodman would do against LeBron. Rodman didn't seem to be able to guard Rogers because of Rodney's unusual blend of attributes. LeBron has those same attributes x 1,000. He's too big, strong, fast and high-flying all at the same time for Dennis to handle.

If you adjust every season to the 2022 pace, only two players would average 38+ PPG: Michael Jordan in 1987 and Kobe in 2006. So how exactly is it harder to score more points now than in the 80s and 90s?
Because since 2002 zones have been allowed, zones make penetration harder and force you to shoot long jumpers wich Jordan was not really great at. He would be dominant but he ain't averaging 40 ppg

Both players proven that zone really isn't their thing. The only FMVP Shaq won since zone was the first year 2002 where teams were really just starting to figure out how to use it, and they actually couldn't have won the series against the Kings if it weren't for the refs. MJ had the lowest field goal percentage when playing in the Olympics. Both would still be pretty good players in today's game, but Lebron probably wouldn't be the only one better than them
🧾1992 Team USA shot 57.6% FG throughout the Olympics so no those defenses were absolutely atrocious lol. Jordan was one of the few players who had an off shooting series showcased by his 21% 3pt on a closer 3pt line and the 68% FT which are far below his normal numbers. His 2pt% was actually a solid 50% so if you do the math and if he had a normal efficiency series from downtown(33%), and free throw shooting series ( 83% ) he would be at 53% FG and his overall efficiency would be much higher. These types of stretches happen in the regular season but the average casual wouldn’t notice them over the course of an 82 game season. For example in 1997-98, MJ had a 12 game stretch where he shot 45% FG and 13% from 3 on 23.7 ppg, 6.4 rebounds and 3.7 assists. Steph Curry had a 6 game sample size this year where he shot 34% FG and 26% 3pt on 18.2 ppg. Completely different than the 6 game size he had in the Finals. Small sample sizes can result in large fluctuations and extreme data sets. Shaq was objectively the best player in the 2002 Finals. He was objectively the best player in 2004 Finals but of course you don’t win finals mvps if your team loses. Wade was clearly best player in the 2006 Finals. In Shaq’s defense, he was an excellent double/triple team presence opening the paint up for his shooting guard. Shaq isn’t Jason Tatum so he knows when to defer to a better teammate instead of chucking shot after shot rotfl.
Would agree that players can underperform from time to time, especially when zone defense is allowed, the opposing team would have so much more options to stop you. Just applying MJ fan's standard on modern players to MJ which is that you cannot underperform no matter the situations. I'm not going to be like 90s fans acting like players in their era never underperformed and other eras are trash. I would agree players who didn't play in MJ's era can underperform as well, players like Magic, Kareem, Kobe, T-mac, Lebron really underperformed from time to time, because they're human beings, you will have some bad days. As for Shaq, I would say he was probably the best player in the NBA since 2000 to 2005, his dominance is unreal and he is the real reason why NBA brought back zone defense to make things harder for star players and in the first year of the rule change, the Kings immediately found the answer which is team work and pretty much showed that unless the Lakers had the refs they weren't able to beat the Kings, and since then Shaq never won an FMVP. And also in Shaq's defense, no other player can beat zone defense by himself, the point isn't how bad MJ or Shaq is, the point is how much harder it is for star players to perform well or single handedly change the game without the protection of illegal defense.

Wall off the paint and you’re leaving shooters unattended. Run players off the line and you’re opening up more driving lanes. You're absolutely correct, more driving lanes are opened up, but definitely not for the best players, the reason those lanes are opened up is because the defense is focused on the best players like Kobe, MJ, Lebron, James Harden, therefore other players are getting better looks. Especially after the Golden State found the answer, offense became a lot easier and a little bit more boring to watch, when we watch today's game we feel like the defense is weak but actually the reason is teams have found ways to create easier looks, but again, for the "team" not for the "best player". And for Lebron's part, relying on his size, driving and playmaking to get him 4 championships? He's probably a little bit more than that. He is playing chess, scheming, planning out what to do. The scary part about Lebron isn't just his driving, it's also his vision and the way he reads situations, shooting threes and when he decides to drive, you do not know which step (sometimes how many steps lol) he is going to take. Clogging the paint probably wouldn't be a great strategy playing against Lebron's team as Lebron's team isn't at their best when he scores 40+ points, it's best when he sets up the entire team on fire and make them catch a rhythm
I haven't seen enough of Kareem to give him that detailed a ranking. My opinion of Durant as a scorer has gone down some in the last couple of years since he seems to have confirmed my suspicion that (at least part of)the real reason he doesn't score more is because he doesn't have the stamina. But I still think Durant is among the best and if not the best perimeter scorer. He doesn't have the sheer relentlessness of Jordan or Kobe, but he's more efficient and tougher to contest. So Durant is arguably a better scorer than them.

I thought the officials did a good job of keeping the Celtics off the Warriors' ass. I expected the referees to help the Warriors if needed, but I didn't expect the Warriors to actually need it as much they did. I haven't watched the Warriors enough to rank them all other than to say that, at this moment, I think Jordan Poole is the best of them.
@@TheRiggedBA I honestly thought they would win a fair series. I was watching the Celtics towards the end of the season and nearly all their playoff games. That defense is historically great. Of course, Miami and Milwaukee weren’t at full strength but still it was impressive.

Just like how they say that the best shooters today would be relegated to specialists, because they would be “benched for shooting 3s”. The reason the 3 pointer was viewed as a bad shot was because most of the players couldn’t shoot.
So I tracked down the interview from Shaq's podcast, and I think the reports on it are misrepresenting McGrady a bit. McGrady was actually pushing back against Shaq saying that modern players including Giannis couldn't survive in their era. McGrady basically said that was going too far, and insisted multiple times that Giannis could play in their era. All McGrady really said was that it would be hard for Giannis to be as great because Giannis lives off paint scoring, and the paint was more closed off back then. I actually thought Shaq's comments were a bigger deal. He was borderline disrespectful to Giannis. Which was surprising to me since Giannis is the one modern player Shaq usually doesn't hate on.

@@heroinvrxther5826 In some ways, yeah. When the change to allow zone first happened, rosters were still built like the 80s and 90s. You didn't have "stretch 4s" and all that stuff because you didn't need them before since the illegal defense rules let you create space any time you wanted. So in those first few years after the rule change, a lot of teams didn't have the personnel to space the floor. If you were a superstar on a team with limited shooting, you'd just have free bodies piled up to stop you.

It's better defense because zone is considerably harder to score against. The purpose of defense is to prevent scores, so the defense that is harder to score against is better than the defense that is easier to score against.

People assume real NBA athletes are RPG characters where you they can just spend experience points and up their attributes, but it doesn't always work like that. MJ was a below average 3 point shooter his entire career (except for the years where they brought the 3 pt line in for him). The 3 point shot was always available to him but he never really got any better at it. Maybe being a 30% three point shooter was his ceiling? We'll never know, but that's what the reality was. Giannis is one of the hardest working players ever in the NBA. He was an abysmal 3 point shooter and has spent YEARS getting coaching on his shot and working at it and he's up to the point where he's like, not completely awful but still well below league average at the 3 ball. It's really hard to acquire skills that you don't have.

I think a lot of times people intentionally underrate LeBron's scoring to keep him even with other players in their mind. So they'll say Kobe or Jordan was a scorer and LeBron is a facilitator. That way you make it seem like their contributions are more evenly matched. Because if you admit that LeBron is both a facilitator AND elite scorer, it's much harder to argue that other players can match or exceed him.

Aside from being a scoring champion, LeBron has come within fractions of a point of the scoring title numerous times and is so again right now currently at 37 years old. In terms of pure scoring ability, LeBron could have lead the league in scoring whenever he wanted. He chooses not to play that way. Jordan on the other hand actively padded his scoring stats and openly admitted to playing for the scoring title every year. Different scoring goals and mentalities. LeBron doesn't have the range of scoring skills KD or Jordan has, but he is more efficient and more naturally gifted. So you can make an argument either way, in my opinion.

Big men are on the rise again I believe due most teams not knowing what to do with one now. Embiid, Giannis, Jokic, etc are mis matches for a lot of small ball teams. But they definitely are different from big men from the past. In that they're better shooters and facilitators

Well the debate has long been a farce as far as LeBron vs Jordan is concerned. LeBron is markedly better. He can do things you'd need Jordan + 2 or 3 other guys to do. What’s weird about the situation is that MJ actually has been consistent in giving Pippen his due. He has even gone as far as to say that having him around took a lot of the pressure and workload off of him, allowing him to focus on scoring. However, in the 4th quarter of Game 3, the Nets had nothing else to lose and finally thought to try zone on Shaq for the first time out of sheer desperation. And the second they did, Shaq instantly got erased from the offense for the rest of the game. I think the initiative against foul baiting has been great. I've never understood why Harden got so many calls in the first place. People always said Harden was just "taking advantage of the rules", but that's BS. Harden was actually BREAKING the rules. Kicking defenders, hooking them with your arm, etc. are offensive fouls. What Harden took advantage of was the referees giving him bogus calls for some strange reason. At least until this year.

I 1000% agree zone defenses and allowing defenders to roam makes todays defenses better than pre-zone defense rules. (It also makes the game more entertaining and interesting in my view) However, Jordan is basically a beefed up version of Demar derozan or Dwayne wade, so I can totally see MJ dominating the league scoring wise. Meh. If MJ could shoot threes, he'd have shot them in his career for the same reasons you mention. Jordan's primary skill was his quickness and his legs, not so much his shooting accuracy. His FG% was always inflated by his constantly being bailed out by the refs, but even besides that, his bread and butter game was taking it to the rim and drawing fouls.
MJ's mid-post game was deadly, but not because of his shot-making; rather, his athleticism and verticality made him a mismatch against any 2-guard in the league at the time. Recall that in the 90s, you had tons of 6-2, 6-3 Dee Brown types at off guard. MJ feasted on them, but he could also outjump even the Drexler-type big guards. In his prime he'd routinely jump 3 feet in the air, creating a ton of space on his opponent, and shoot an unobstructed shot. It's what makes him a scorer, rather than a pure shooter. Many players at the time were better spot up shooters--Reggie, Mark Price, Hubert Davis, Ray Allen, Steve Kerr, Jon Paxon, Peja, Anderson, and many others. I'd argue Jordan's hands were too big for an optimal spot-up shooter.
Teams like the Knicks and Pistons (and the Shaq/Horace Grant Magic) who could intimidate Jordan at the rim and force Jordan to the outside consistently had a lot of success against him. The fawning documentaries and Oldhead Stans gloss over all Jordan's games (particularly against the Knicks) where he scored 23 points on 30% shooting, and was constantly bailed out by the refs. In his later years, as this channel documented, MJ lived off the refs, who, had they been credited, would have been in the top 10 in the league in assists with all of their gifts to MJ.
The Superteam argument against Lebron (though off topic) is so stupid that I just want to get it off my chest here. MJ didn't have to go to a Superteam *because he owned the league and the league built Superteams FOR HIM in Chicago* ESPECIALLY in the 2nd 3-peat when the Myth was at risk of dying after Shaq beat him.

The refs conspiracy is interesting since Karl Malone and Shaq got more free throws than MJ. Did the refs make MJ shoot 83% from the line ? Did refs make him an elite mid range shooter ? Did the refs improve his 3 ball from 20.2% in the 80’s to 35.9% in the 90’s.
The reason MJ has a high fg% is because he’s an all time great slasher, a great shooter from 10-20ft and he takes low volume 3’s at 33%. Fouls normally don’t count as shot attempts so refs calling fouls wouldn’t boost his ft%.
Shaq did beat MJ and was a top 3 player in the 90’s but the context is that he beat a rusty MJ. MJ played 17 games And shot 41% that season. The following season he played 82 games and shot 50%.

The problem is that I can't tell whether it's age or just conditioning. I don't think LeBron is 100%. He's moving different and his body looked kind of out of shape(by LeBron standards). But he appears to be getting better physically with each game, so I assume a lot of it is conditioning. So he might actually still be the best again or close very soon.

I think so. A simple pick and roll could get you an assist seemingly 99% of the time back then.
60’s/70’s ? Absolutely since there were way more possessions. 80’s/90’s? About the same with slight increases/ decreases to certain stats depending on the decade, system, and surrounding players. Steals and blocks would be the most likely stats to increase. Less spacing means it’s easier to help on drives , get deflections and Jump in passing lanes since the court is more congested. With blocks same thing applies. More mid range shots and posts ups are easier to block than 3’s. Players get the same amount of shots at the rim though.
On the contrary, rebounding might be harder for guards since big men are closer to the paint. Teams averaged more turnovers in those eras. Efficiency was generally worse too.
@@TheRiggedBA Actually pick and rolls were run less in the 90’s. They were still effective but with less spacing, you’re relying more on your roll man as opposed today you usually have your roll man + 3 other shooters to kick out to as consistent options.
Assist % is an estimate of the percentage of teammate field goals a player assisted while he was on the floor. Chris Paul is just behind Stockton all time at #2 in assist#. You had the extreme high assist guys like Magic and Stockton get 10+ assists a game balanced with guys like Shawn Kemp who averaged an extremely low 2 assists a game. Stats were easier to come by in the 80’s than the 90’s just like stats were easier to come by in the 2010’s than the 2000’s.

You can’t do that on the bulls with Harper shooting 29% from 3, Scottie shooting 33% from 3 and Rodman/Longley taking no 3’s.

The league average 3PT% in the 90’s is inflated because the NBA temporarily shortened the 3 point line a couple of feet in to help players make threes. If you put LeBron in that era during that period, coupled with the fact that there was zero on-ball pressure on the perimeter because off the dribble 3 point shots were scarce, he’d shoot 38% or so from 3 if he played back then.

In the 90’s, teams were taking 10+ a game and defenders were actually focusing on and contesting shooters. Sure there were plenty of times just like in the 2000’s where guys like Stockton and Nash would pass up open 3’s to dump the ball into the post or run the pick and roll but players were no longer afraid to take them.
If Mj played today, he would adjust to league averages and take more 3’s. If Lebron played in the 80/90’s, he’d adjust to league averages and take less 3’s. You don’t get better at 3pt shooting taking less 3’s. Sure Lebron’s %’s would improve during the few shortened line seasons but that long2/corner 3 distance actually helps someone like MJ more than Lebron.

I'm not a fan of big lists like this just on general principle because there's no meaningful criteria that anyone would take the time to apply to such a large number of players. So the rankings will always be contradictory and/or wonky. Nick's list is certainly that.
At the end of the day, I think the ultimate criterion for ranking players is who would you pick to start your team with if you had the choice. LeBron is the best player I've seen since I've been watching basketball. If I was starting a team and had my choice of anyone who's ever played, my pick would be LeBron. So I agree with Nick's #1. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was before my time, but by appearances he does seem to arguably be the GOAT, so I'm cool with Nick's #2 also.
Other than that, I thought a lot of Nick's list was kind of crazy. But it's something to talk about, which is it's job I guess.

I was just thinking about this, actually. Zone made perimeter players evolve, but for years it made bigs devolve. Their traditional skills could no longer be used, so bigs just sort of atrophied for awhile. So I've always felt 90s centers were better than post-zone centers because 90s centers at least still had their skills intact, even if they wouldn't work as well today. For a long time, there was no comparison. But when I look at Embiid and Jokic, I can't say that anymore. Things have definitely changed.

As void as the ppg argument is, scoring during MJ’s era (1984-2003) was 101.9 ppg. Scoring during Lebron’s era (2003-2022) is 102.1 ppg. The lowest scoring era of all time is the 1940’s at 73.8 ppg. The highest scoring era is the 1960’s at 115 ppg.
This goes to show how meaningless the semi zones+ illegal defensive 3 2001-02 rules are compared to the shot clock, 3pt line, paint widening, and a multitude of other rules changes and points of emphasis.
Embid and Jokic have reached top 5 in scoring. They adjusted. Embid by stretching out when needed and Jokic by becoming one of the greatest passers at any position.

I haven't watched much Magic Johnson. Steph is a game-changer when he's healthy and his shot is on. But Steph's body is too fragile and his rhythm inevitably gets broken by injuries. Things can throw him off his game a lot of times. So for me, it's mostly about reliability with Steph. When he's grooving, he's so atomic that he breaks the game. But his problem is maintaining that groove.

It took a Generation for a center to crack top 3 in scoring and to this video credit Embiid has an outside game of shooting the 3/ taking jump shots instead of playing down low in the post which media pundits criticize him for. In actuality they should criticize him for not being a better passer. Jokic scores less, can take his game out side, can dribble but most importantly can pass thus does not have to rely on jump shots because points are points and he can mix in some post up play to keep his offensive attack unpredictable to defenses.

I don’t entirely agree with this. Shaq was somewhat stoppable pre Zone. If you watched Dennis Rodman and the bulls vs Shaq, double teams could really slow down Shaq.

The Celtics are playing exceptional D, but something is going on with Durant as well as the exceptional D. He looks mentally unfocused. He's basically just giving them the ball. I don't think the league is ordering him to do it, but he's not his normal self for whatever reason.

Every time someone is allowed to get away with some fouls they call it "90s defense", when the same things were fouls in the 90s also. And for Jordan in particular, the referees would foul out the entire Celtics line-up by the 2nd quarter if they dared touch MJ like that. Plus the Celtics' defensive scheme wouldn't even be legal in the 90s because they're crowding Durant with zone defenders.

How do you think dennnis Rodman would do against Lebron?
The closest Rodman-era player to LeBron I can think of(only in terms of type, not talent) is Rodney Rogers. Rogers was a big, tweener forward who had some athleticism and could shoot from outside. I tend to use Rogers as a gauge of how Rodman would do against LeBron. Rodman didn't seem to be able to guard Rogers because of Rodney's unusual blend of attributes. LeBron has those same attributes x 1,000. He's too big, strong, fast and high-flying all at the same time for Dennis to handle.

Both players proven that zone really isn't their thing. The only FMVP Shaq won since zone was the first year 2002 where teams were really just starting to figure out how to use it, and they actually couldn't have won the series against the Kings if it weren't for the refs. MJ had the lowest field goal percentage when playing in the Olympics. Both would still be pretty good players in today's game, but Lebron probably wouldn't be the only one better than them
🧾1992 Team USA shot 57.6% FG throughout the Olympics so no those defenses were absolutely atrocious lol. Jordan was one of the few players who had an off shooting series showcased by his 21% 3pt on a closer 3pt line and the 68% FT which are far below his normal numbers. His 2pt% was actually a solid 50% so if you do the math and if he had a normal efficiency series from downtown(33%), and free throw shooting series ( 83% ) he would be at 53% FG and his overall efficiency would be much higher.
These types of stretches happen in the regular season but the average casual wouldn’t notice them over the course of an 82 game season. For example in 1997-98, MJ had a 12 game stretch where he shot 45% FG and 13% from 3 on 23.7 ppg, 6.4 rebounds and 3.7 assists. Steph Curry had a 6 game sample size this year where he shot 34% FG and 26% 3pt on 18.2 ppg. Completely different than the 6 game size he had in the Finals. Small sample sizes can result in large fluctuations and extreme data sets.
Shaq was objectively the best player in the 2002 Finals. He was objectively the best player in 2004 Finals but of course you don’t win finals mvps if your team loses. Wade was clearly best player in the 2006 Finals. In Shaq’s defense, he was an excellent double/triple team presence opening the paint up for his shooting guard. Shaq isn’t Jason Tatum so he knows when to defer to a better teammate instead of chucking shot after shot rotfl.
Would agree that players can underperform from time to time, especially when zone defense is allowed, the opposing team would have so much more options to stop you. Just applying MJ fan's standard on modern players to MJ which is that you cannot underperform no matter the situations. I'm not going to be like 90s fans acting like players in their era never underperformed and other eras are trash. I would agree players who didn't play in MJ's era can underperform as well, players like Magic, Kareem, Kobe, T-mac, Lebron really underperformed from time to time, because they're human beings, you will have some bad days. As for Shaq, I would say he was probably the best player in the NBA since 2000 to 2005, his dominance is unreal and he is the real reason why NBA brought back zone defense to make things harder for star players and in the first year of the rule change, the Kings immediately found the answer which is team work and pretty much showed that unless the Lakers had the refs they weren't able to beat the Kings, and since then Shaq never won an FMVP. And also in Shaq's defense, no other player can beat zone defense by himself, the point isn't how bad MJ or Shaq is, the point is how much harder it is for star players to perform well or single handedly change the game without the protection of illegal defense.

Wall off the paint and you’re leaving shooters unattended. Run players off the line and you’re opening up more driving lanes. You're absolutely correct, more driving lanes are opened up, but definitely not for the best players, the reason those lanes are opened up is because the defense is focused on the best players like Kobe, MJ, Lebron, James Harden, therefore other players are getting better looks. Especially after the Golden State found the answer, offense became a lot easier and a little bit more boring to watch, when we watch today's game we feel like the defense is weak but actually the reason is teams have found ways to create easier looks, but again, for the "team" not for the "best player". And for Lebron's part, relying on his size, driving and playmaking to get him 4 championships? He's probably a little bit more than that. He is playing chess, scheming, planning out what to do. The scary part about Lebron isn't just his driving, it's also his vision and the way he reads situations, shooting threes and when he decides to drive, you do not know which step (sometimes how many steps lol) he is going to take. Clogging the paint probably wouldn't be a great strategy playing against Lebron's team as Lebron's team isn't at their best when he scores 40+ points, it's best when he sets up the entire team on fire and make them catch a rhythm

I haven't seen enough of Kareem to give him that detailed a ranking. My opinion of Durant as a scorer has gone down some in the last couple of years since he seems to have confirmed my suspicion that (at least part of)the real reason he doesn't score more is because he doesn't have the stamina. But I still think Durant is among the best and if not the best perimeter scorer. He doesn't have the sheer relentlessness of Jordan or Kobe, but he's more efficient and tougher to contest. So Durant is arguably a better scorer than them.

Just like how they say that the best shooters today would be relegated to specialists, because they would be “benched for shooting 3s”. The reason the 3 pointer was viewed as a bad shot was because most of the players couldn’t shoot.
So I tracked down the interview from Shaq's podcast, and I think the reports on it are misrepresenting McGrady a bit. McGrady was actually pushing back against Shaq saying that modern players including Giannis couldn't survive in their era. McGrady basically said that was going too far, and insisted multiple times that Giannis could play in their era. All McGrady really said was that it would be hard for Giannis to be as great because Giannis lives off paint scoring, and the paint was more closed off back then.
I actually thought Shaq's comments were a bigger deal. He was borderline disrespectful to Giannis. Which was surprising to me since Giannis is the one modern player Shaq usually doesn't hate on.

@@heroinvrxther5826 In some ways, yeah. When the change to allow zone first happened, rosters were still built like the 80s and 90s. You didn't have "stretch 4s" and all that stuff because you didn't need them before since the illegal defense rules let you create space any time you wanted. So in those first few years after the rule change, a lot of teams didn't have the personnel to space the floor. If you were a superstar on a team with limited shooting, you'd just have free bodies piled up to stop you.

People assume real NBA athletes are RPG characters where you they can just spend experience points and up their attributes, but it doesn't always work like that. MJ was a below average 3 point shooter his entire career (except for the years where they brought the 3 pt line in for him). The 3 point shot was always available to him but he never really got any better at it. Maybe being a 30% three point shooter was his ceiling? We'll never know, but that's what the reality was.
Giannis is one of the hardest working players ever in the NBA. He was an abysmal 3 point shooter and has spent YEARS getting coaching on his shot and working at it and he's up to the point where he's like, not completely awful but still well below league average at the 3 ball. It's really hard to acquire skills that you don't have.

LeBron is the most underrated scorer. You should do a video about that. He has better field goal percentage than most scorers.
I think a lot of times people intentionally underrate LeBron's scoring to keep him even with other players in their mind. So they'll say Kobe or Jordan was a scorer and LeBron is a facilitator. That way you make it seem like their contributions are more evenly matched. Because if you admit that LeBron is both a facilitator AND elite scorer, it's much harder to argue that other players can match or exceed him.

Aside from being a scoring champion, LeBron has come within fractions of a point of the scoring title numerous times and is so again right now currently at 37 years old. In terms of pure scoring ability, LeBron could have lead the league in scoring whenever he wanted. He chooses not to play that way. Jordan on the other hand actively padded his scoring stats and openly admitted to playing for the scoring title every year. Different scoring goals and mentalities.
LeBron doesn't have the range of scoring skills KD or Jordan has, but he is more efficient and more naturally gifted. So you can make an argument either way, in my opinion.

Well the debate has long been a farce as far as LeBron vs Jordan is concerned. LeBron is markedly better. He can do things you'd need Jordan + 2 or 3 other guys to do. I would say the media artificially promoting Jordan is the only reason the debate even survives.

What’s weird about the situation is that MJ actually has been consistent in giving Pippen his due.
He has even gone as far as to say that having him around took a lot of the pressure and workload off of him, allowing him to focus on scoring. And that he wouldn’t have stayed on the Bulls if it weren’t for Pippen.
I think Pippen’s issue more so has to do with the media’s pro-Jordan agenda. They don’t give him his credit and they always push the narrative that MJ “created” him and is the reason he was a star.
