    "My generation was the best"
    "We were tougher"
    "We played our heart out"
    We all heard that in the early 1980s when Bird came. When Jordan came in, many -- including Ray Firestone, Wilt Chamberlain, Bon Lanier -- all repeat how they were better in the good old days. How they played smarter & adopted a more rugged style of basketball.
    We are only witnessing history repeating itself all over again.

      Thank you. This is getting crazy. Old guys don't see that and I don't know why because it's so obvious.... You just need to watch a Wilt interview and he says stuff like he would average 40 points per game at age 50 or that there's no centers except Hakeem and so on.

    When I see people claiming that players were better back in the day, I just laugh. I grew up watching 90’s basketball, and I stopped watching around 2000. I just recently started watching again, and I’m AMAZED at the level of talent the league has now. These guys would dominate in whatever era they played in. It’s ridiculous to think otherwise.

    Back in the good old days, I had to walk to school in the snow barefoot for 50 miles for 365 days a year. We couldn't afford shoes. We didn't have any vehicles. Heck, we didn't have any bikes either. Those were the days when no one could afford bags to carry their books in. I had to balance my books on top of my head while walking those 50 miles ever day. Oh, did I mention that no one couldn't afford mittens back then, either? Yep. The good ole days.

    Please send this to TNT. The hating and the macho attitude showed by NBA vets these days is so crazy that it's not even fun to watch anymore. We are fed the same bullshit over and over again, and it's funny because they wanna act like they're just making observations when it's obvious that they are stroking their own egos every time. It really bums me out that in other sports change and innovation is welcome and appreciated while in basketball and particularly in the NBA ex players and so called experts are so unfair and biased. They seem to have no idea what they're talking about most of the time, they are clearly not aware of the X and O's of today's game, they talk about it like it's just some guys randomly popping threes or whatever. Another very annoying thing is that even guys like McGrady or KG or pierce or Rasheed, who played more recently, in an era where the 3 point shot was already predominant, join the old guys in the hate and say dumb stuff like get back to the post game or whatever (KG was criticized during his career for taking too many jumpers btw)

      Yeah, it irked me seeing McGrady start hating on the NBA like he played in the 60s or something. I'm like dude, you just retired 15 minutes ago. And it's crazy because guys like McGrady, Shaq and Vince Carter were the main ones griping about zone, so at one point they understood why the game is the way it is now and how hard it is to score. McGrady was shooting almost eight 3-pointers a game at one point. But they get amnesia the second they retire.

    Jordan's and 1990s NBA fans are so sensitive & sell centered. If you showed them they are wrong, they're literally blocking you... And didn't want to understand.
    They're like the 1960s and 1970s stars that blasted Magic, Bird and Jordan on Roy Firestone's show... They remembered things incorrectly and truly believed the NBA stopped when they retired.

      I'd just like to see someone who makes these claims break down how it could possibly happen. Because they just say Jordan will average 20+ free throws a game since you supposedly can't touch him. But if you're going to make that claim, you have to explain why no one else gets anywhere even remotely approaching those numbers. It's not like Jordan is the only player that drives to the basket. I mean, I know they can't actually provide a breakdown because it's not realistically possible for Jordan to do it. I just wish they would at least try, so that they would realize this for themselves in the process.

      Defenders in general back then often didn't even pick a guy up until he was below the 3-point line. It would have been considered a waste of energy since guys couldn't shoot like that in the 90s. Gary Payton has no concept of what it would be like to guard someone who's in range the second he crosses the halfcourt line. I knew Gary didn't understand the situation when he said something like he'd just go under the screens for Curry to stick with him. But Curry only needs a split second of daylight to get a shot off. He literally doesn't even wait for the screen to complete. By the time you even bend your knees to duck around the screen, you've already given up 3 points.

    Its funny how old heads complain about the lack of physicality in todays NBA. Teams from the 60s-80s were playing at a ridiculously face pace and running up the scoreboard. The pace of the game slowed down in the early 90s when teams started playing more iso-ball and the drop in talent level being diluted do the NBA adding seven new franchises during a 5 year period. The zone defense rule in the early 2000s made it harder for great one-one players like Shaq, Iverson, and T-Mac to put up ridiculous numbers and teams had to adapt to these changes. The small ball style of play, rise of analytics, and Steph Curry's rise to stardom transformed the NBA. Teams these days no longer rely heavily on iso ball and focus more on floor spacing and ball movement. The talent level in the league is at an all time high but these old heads claim that the 90s had the best players. Teams racking up points in nothing new and these old heads need to rely on facts instead of advocating false narratives.

    • @TheRiggedBA
      @TheRiggedBA  3 роки тому +8

      Wow, I didn't know Strom said that. Slanted officiating certainly had a huge impact on how much Jordan was able to score. Jordan could just make a move, knowing he was going to get a foul call any time a defender touched him, or even just got close to him sometimes. Any player could score more with that kind of interference. It's good when referees admit what happened.

    I’ve been saying this. The physicality isn’t that much different now compared to back then. Hand checking still exist today. The players nowadays are just so skilled and talented and the floor is so spaced out, that players today don’t get bothered by hand checking, hence why fans might not notice it, hence why they think it doesn’t exist anymore. They point out the ticky tack fouls that are called, but ignore the clear excessive physical contact that doesn’t get called. If anybody watches any current nba games under a microscope, you’ll notice the a bunch a hand checking that doesn’t get called. Look at the lakers-warriors game a few days ago and look how much physically there was in that game, Curry and LeBron getting hand checked and hacked throughout the game.

    • @TheRiggedBA
      @TheRiggedBA  8 місяців тому +2

    It's good to see so many of these ex players, "analysts" and even part time basketball fans called out for their bs. Only just found your channel after searching "jordan overrated" and you have some compelling stuff. I think he was a great player but the way people just put him on this level that's out of the grasp of every other player in history is completely ignorant. I watched him and know what he was, he was never my favorite player though. It just seemed to be cool to like Michael and the Bulls back in the day when they were on top and if you were in a certain age group. It was mostly hype to people who don't actually play the game. Watching the old games again you kind of realize he wasn't some untouchable god like figure on the court. The best? Maybe. Absolutely clearly the best of all time? You can't even make that call with the different skill sets, team situations and rule changes, let alone the blatant match fixing. I've thought maybe LeBron might have had a very good case at some points but you really can't say either way. Different eras. Hell, maybe Wilt would have killed any era. I think you cherry picked some things on some of these videos but they are still real and completely relevant. Interesting stuff. I know many people who proudly proclaim Jordan is the best ever and that's that. These people weren't watching other teams very much back in the day OR NOW and own the Jordan VHS tapes and DVDS. You can't reason with them about many things at all come to think of it.

    One thing I notice watching old '80s and '90s games compared to today is that back then you were guarding a man and trying to alter his shot, whereas in the modern NBA you're more guarding against tendencies and spots on the floor. If a guy like Khris Middleton is on fire from the left elbow, you're doing everything you can to make sure he doesn't even get to set up on the left elbow and push him off his spot. If Kyrie is driving to the right, the defense isn't so much geared toward getting in front of Kyrie, but making sure Kyrie can't get to the right side. Like "You can have your left and try it there and I'll live with it, but I'm not gonna let you take me right again because I know you're feeling it from there".
    In the '80s and '90s you could pretty much walk into whatever spot you wanted on the floor. "Good defense" was just making sure you were trying to get your hand in his face every time. I remember seeing old Larry Bird games, and obviously Bird was an incredible player, but he would just post up for a second and then flare out into a catch-and-shoot 18 foot jumper on the right side and it was an automatic 2 points every time. In today's NBA he'd have to really alter his game because an NBA defense now would see that play setting up and just say "Yeah, you're not catching the ball here. You'll have to try something else".
    I'm not sure how much of this is the rule changes, or if it's mostly coaching and tactics getting more advanced, or if offensive players are just so good that just putting a hand in their face isn't really doing much to slow anyone down.

    Jmxyhighroller prove that it is easier to score nowadays. Players from the past aren't crazy, they just aren't very good at explaining why their claim is true. It's a fact that the three-point shot inflates scoring today, also the fact that there is more spacing around the Court gives players more space to operate, there is no hand checking, there's this misconception that hand checking is been illegal since 1979. That's a myth that has been spread because the definition of hand checking has changed throughout history. It was define as the same thing in 1979, as it was today. Hand checking was allowed up until the 1999-2000 season. The league softened up even more on the rules in the 2004-05 season to make it easier to score. They admitted this, it is documented, it is a fact. Also the thing that a lot of people don't bring up is that back in the '80s and '90s there was no defensive 3 second violation. Which meant that you could camp in the paint all game long and it was harder to get into the paint and score with lips especially if you were a guard, like Michael Jordan.

    I wonder how many points and how much success Jordan would have in today’s NBA.
    I mean yeah I think he’s overrated asf and his fanboys are extremely toxic but I still think he’s a very gifted athlete with a plethora of scoring moves. I mean he was well ahead of his time.
    The level of competition at his position and for his supremacy is so much higher in today’s NBA. Kawhi Leonard, a 34 year old LeBron, Giannis, and even a pre injury Durant would give him a run for his money.
    I don’t believe he would be a “glorified DeMar DeRozan” if he played in today’s NBA, but I don’t see him averaging 50 PPG all because there’s no “HaNdChEcKiNg”. I mean that’s already been debunked along with the physical hard fouls.
    The combination of bigger, taller, more athletic defenders, zone defenses, no David Stern to “protect” him, and the possibility of not playing for a stacked team would actually give him trouble in today’s NBA.

    • @TheRiggedBA
      @TheRiggedBA  5 років тому +7

      I think Jordan today would be about a 25ppg scorer. He would no longer be the best scorer in the league, and I don't think he'd really be in the conversation for best player. He may be elitely skilled, but zone defense reduces everyone to outside shooting, which is the one skill Jordan never could develop. So he would be a good but ultimately limited scorer. And his defense wouldn't look as hot today now that he'd be facing real talent at his position and trying to guard guys who can actually score.
      Giannis is about as good as it's possible to be without a three-point shot in today's league and he's arguably not even a top 3 player thanks to zone. So Jordan would be in trouble.

      Are all games rigged? No. Not even all championships.

    So your response is digging up old scenes from regular season games, showing relaxed D in the 1st quarter ? The point is that they could turn it up and where allowed to play hard full court D. Show some playoff games and compare them to today's playoff games.
    That doesn't mean that today's players suck or wouldn't be successful in the 90s. Most of them would still be great, but their numbers would be down.
    Harden or Westbrook wouldn't average double digit rebounds. All point averages would be down by 2-5 points.
    It's simple math. Today's average NBA team ATTEMPTS 20 more 3 pointers than in the 90s. Way more shot attempts across the board = more chance for rebounds and assists. While point averages, 3 pointers, assists and rebounds have all gone up ACROSS the board, steals and blocks have stayed almost the same. Numbers don't lie....and again, not hating on today's players. If you are in the NBA in 2021 you are not just one of 400 Americans to have made it to the highes league, you are today one of the 400 best in the WORLD, due to globalisation of the game. So yes, all stars of this era would have been good players in the 90s....that being said, MJ and several others would also be great players today.
    What has changed is how the game is called, HOW MANY SHOTS THE PLAYERS ARE ALLOWED TO TAKE and the resulting stats.

    • @TheRiggedBA
      @TheRiggedBA  3 роки тому +8

      Kenny Smith is using a regular season game for LeBron. So you should be making this point against Kenny. Not that it would matter, since the supposedly earth-shattering difference in hand-checking between the eras is as non-existent in the playoffs as it is in the regular season.
      As for shot attempts, the main reason they shoot so many 3-pointers now is the 2000s rule change to allow zone defense. Zone is much harder to score against, forcing star players to pass more. So while total team shot attempts may go up, individual star players actually shoot less. If you put Harden and Durant in the 90s where it was illegal to stack zone defenders up against them and force them to pass, they would shoot more, score easier, and their numbers would leap up against a much simpler defense.

      After peaking at 3% usage during the 2009-10 season, zone was used for just 638 plays in 2017-18, 0.2% of all possessions, according to Synergy Sports data.
      There goes your argument...case closed on zone defense impact in today's game....
      BTW...zones were reintroduced in 2002 because of the dominance of Shaq in the paint...hand checking was removed in 2005...all offensive numbers as well as rebounds went up afterwards...your point that KD and Harden would have scored more in the 90s has no basis...do you believe the players in the 90s couldn't shoot ? Try to show a modern player dropping 50 against relentless hands, elbows, and body impeding their drives. You can’t. Because no one today faces that level of contact, and that’s exactly what the league wanted. 2005 citation was the last and most effective hand check rule in phasing it out of the game and softening the game.

As far as that goes, the challenge isn't showing a modern player facing hand-checking like Starks did Jordan. Hand-checking happens every game both old school and modern, so I'm not in the habit of counting the number of hand-checks that occur in a particular match and committing it to memory. But I just looked at a few minutes of your Game 4 of the 1993 Finals, then looked at a few minutes of Game 6 of the 2017 Wizards/Celtics series. They're not only hand-checking non-stop in the 2017 series, but the hand-checking is notably rougher also. It would be hard to enforce the rule any less.
      But as I pointed out to you before, first the claim was that in Jordan's era "hand checking was legal". Then when that was proven to be a false myth, the claim suddenly switched to "well, it was illegal, but it wasn't enforced". Then when you show it being enforced, the claim switches to "well, it was enforced...but not as much". I suppose one can just keep switching to vaguer and vaguer hand-check claims until it it's so vague that it's meaningless and can't be proven or disproven. But the simple fact remains that hand-checking was illegal for the entirety of Michael Jordan's career and it was provably enforced against his defenders.

      Wrong. Hand checking was basically never enforced pre-2000s. This is why they kept writing citation after citation to get it under control. It wasn’t until 2005 that the league finally managed to make it disappear. And the results: higher scoring, higher efficiency, more 20+ PPG single season scorers than ever, and not a SINGLE citation passed since that year. No coincidence.
      There has never been a bigger scoring increase from year to year (when adjusting for pace) than the jump from 2004 to 2005.
      Hand check is dead and modern perimeter defense is non-existent. Already proven fact.

      Nonsense. And since you're on a video that actually shows and proves that it's nonsense, I have to wonder if you actually believe the nonsense you just said.
      ["This is why they kept writing citation after citation to get it under control. It wasn’t until 2005 that the league finally managed to make it disappear. "]
      It wasn't until anything, because hand-checking never disappeared. But to explain this again, a citation doesn't mean the rule wasn't being enforced for all the years before the citation. NBA citations are sometimes based on single events. The 2005 citation was made specifically because of the 2004 Finals. The citation is because the NBA didn't like it's enforcement level in that one particular series, not because hand-checking wasn't enforced before that series. You can literally see the hand-check rule being enforced in Jordan games in the 90s. Just as you can literally see LeBron and modern players still getting hand-checked today.

    Show Gary Payton guarding Jordan, not these chumps raising their hands. That style of defense isn't permissible in today's league, but it was iconic of the physicality we remember. Furthermore, there was tons of physicality off the ball as well, much of which was just part of the game but remains largely unseen.

    • @TheRiggedBA
      @TheRiggedBA  Рік тому +5

      Jordan tried to post Payton up 95% of the time. That "physicality" was just normal jostling for post position, which is permissible today. Of course, no one today would try Jordan's 90s style offense of dropping into the post every possession, because it would no longer work against a modern defense. A defense today would only allow it a couple times, then they'd just have a zone defender front Jordan in the post and completely wipe that play out.

    Hand checking enforcement was lax until 2004-05. It still wasn’t a true hand check rule. If it was enforced all the time then why is there constant mentions of hand checking in the rule book after 1979?
    There would be no need for this if it was enforced as much as they intended. And it doesn’t appear in the rule book again since then. This tells me that they finally got it under control.

    • @TheRiggedBA
      @TheRiggedBA  2 роки тому +4

      That's a common misunderstanding. Multiple citations doesn't mean a rule wasn't enforced. As was the case with hand-checking, sometimes the NBA re-emphasizes it's rules based on a single high-profile event. The 2005 citation for example was in response to the very last games of the 2004 season, the 2004 Finals. So just because you see two hand-check citation years apart, it doesn't mean they didn't enforce hand-checking between all those years. It may mean the league was just unhappy with it's enforcement in one particular series recently.

How about now that you can't trash talk without risking a foul? It's also about mental game not just physical. How you have to have thick skin and not get anything to you. I remember how Shawn Kemp taunted the posterized victims after dunking on them. Or how Jordan can talk shit straight to their face after and-1. How about when Dennis Rodman knee kicked a Bulls player and got away with it. Or how John Stark can kick the ball to the crowd and not getting a foul call.
