Cat food your cats will thank you for! (and how to make it)
Thanks for watching! I hope this helps you with your cat food, your budget, and your ability to do it all yourself and feel proud! It's so cool to be able to do this for our feline families.
Please join in on the home-made cat food conversation. Ask questions. Say something nice. Engage in a way that matters. I'll respond! (unless you're mean or unkind for no reason - don't do that). And, for Heaven sakes, subscribe to my channel and let's make some great things together. :)
Below you'll find a link for a pdf of this cat food recipe - it should help you as you go. But, before that, here's an overview of it.
How to make "homemade cat food" that makes 18-19 pints of super nutritious wet cat food for about $15! I use an Instant Pot to speed up the cooking process then pressure can the food to make it ready for long-term storage in the pantry or cabinet. I only refrigerate the open jar I am using. If you are only using this to feed your cat, it yields enough food for 42 servings of about 250 calories each, about what an average sized adult cat needs to eat each day. We still use some dry cat food, but it is the same stuff that our cats stuck their noses up at and picked at for the last couple of years. I think you'll find this homemade food is much cheaper than even basic dry kibble!
Below is an ingredient list and supply list:
(I've included Amazon affiliate links to some of them, especially the ingredients and equipment I ordered from Amazon myself! And, full disclosure, I would get a small commission if you were to purchase a product through any of the links)
To ensure you have what you need on hand, here is the basic ingredients:
1 Whole Chicken, neck and organ meat reserved to include - I used a 6 lb bird.
White Rice - for this cat food recipe I used 2 cups. Some people use oatmeal, and this is optional, but my cats LOVE white rice. It is easier for them to access the nutrition than brown rice.
Pumpkin - I used canned pumpkin puree. DO NOT use pumpkin pie filling - cats shouldn't eat sugar.
Ground Flax Seed - for this cat food recipe I used 2 cups. This is for protein, fiber, and healthy fats that cats need, and it thickens the food right up - it looks a bit soupy at first. Make sure it is finely ground. Brown or golden flax seed meal will work. Whole flaxseed: amzn.to/3Sugr9t Ground flaxseed: amzn.to/48FE844
Additionally, you'll need the following: 4 Large Eggs, Nutritional Yeast Flakes, Toasted Wheat Germ, Frozen Mixed Vegetables, Ground Turmeric, Black Pepper, Taurine Supplement, and Refined Coconut Oil.
Get the full recipe on my site at www.shawntrautman.com/cooking-homemade-whole-chicken-cat-food-with-joanna/
Here is a list of some of the equipment I use in this video along with links to them on Amazon:
16 qt stock pot: amzn.to/495mBlA (this link is for a nicer one than I am using in this video)
Mesh Strainer: amzn.to/3U9hlJs
** Do not use salted or seasoned anything in your cat's food - too much salt really damages their kidneys, and common human seasonings like garlic and onion actually destroy their red blood cells. Yikes! Let me know how it goes! Our current crew of 13 kitties give it 2 paws up with a Meow for extra points!
Thanks, Joanna

    I've read that cooking meat such as raw hearts and other organ meats for your cat destroys taurine levels dramatically. Feeding it to them raw does not. What are your thoughts on this?

  • @user-oz1br7uh4g
    @user-oz1br7uh4g 4 дні тому

    Rice is not good for cats. It depletes their taurine. You could add partially fermented veggies if you want to give them nutrients like what they would get from the offal of small prey.

    Great video- I learned so much even though I am an old still working chef. My three kitties are 19/19 and 20. I’ve not blended meat or used the bones (great idea to do so) bc I shred the chicken then use bone broth. and alternately use chopped beef, chicken livers, organ meats, turkey, salmon as well as plain pumpkin and green peas, apple also and eggs I boil and chop. Always serve with a drizzle of coconut oil. Chefs love to chop, lol- it’s a meditative thing and drizzle!) Mine seem to enjoy the variety and textures. I appreciate all of the explanations of how to safely use equipment and the nutritional values of your ingredients. I’ll start adding nutritional yeast❤. My rescued kitten won't eat dry food! He is 10 weeks old. I started making him homemade food when I weaned him from the dropper. If I use your recipe that you demonstrated on this podcast, would I need to add taurine, calcium, and vitamins? I have been doing chicken thighs and removing the bone and half of the skins, chicken liver, hearts, and gizzards removing the connective gristle, and adding salmon oil, beef gelatin, L-lisine, Vit e, Vit B-50, ground flax seed, probiotics, carrots, snd green peas. And I run it all through my food processor, including the water it cooked in. I let it set up in my fridge, then use a cookie scoop to portion it out onto parchment lined cookie sheets in the deep freeze. Once frozen, I place the balls of cat food into doubled freezer bags for storage. This has been expensive getting started, and I am retired. If all this is unnecessary, please let me know! Oh! I forgot! When I serve it to him, I have been pouring KMR 2 over it and mixing it together. He loves it! He eats a lot better than I do! Lol! But, I have 5 ferrel csts that I am feeding( we msnaged to get them all neutered and spayed except the momma cat, she's too weary of the cage) , plus we have two indoor cats, besides the new kitten! So, that's 8 cats to provide for! There is a huge state park behind our house, so they come to our house out of the woods. Thank you for any advice you can give me! ❤

      After the processing time is finished, turn off the canner and WAIT for it to come down to zero pressure all by itself. NEVER tilt or remove the regulator to release steam. Doing that will cause the jars to siphon or explode. Wait 15 minutes more. Slightly open the canner without removing the lid. Let the lid sit lopsided for another 15 minutes. Carefully remove the lid with it tilted away from your face. Slowly remove the jars without tilting them, as they are not sealed yet. Place them on a thick towel. Once the canner is empty, you can start another load. Remember, hot product, hot jars, hot water. Cold product, cold jars, cold water.

    • @JoannaTrautman
      @JoannaTrautman 5 днів тому

      First off, thank you for watching my video as closely as you have. You're right - one possibility for a canner "seeping" has to do with water level. Another possibility is due to faulty gaskets (a rip, tear, or being old). Another yet is the emergency valve being faulty (a crack, a break, being brittle, etc.) I think my situation is due to my gaskets and emergency valves being old. I just got my replacement gaskets and emergency valves (a set for each of my canners) in the mail yesterday. I could absolutely use less water, but the excess steam and dripping was a "neon" sign that it was time to replace the seals. That is what I get as a consequence of filming my real life, rather than a staged environment with mint equipment every time. :) Thanks for the note and suggestion. Joanna

    • @judyd5681

    I think you're making your own cat is a terrific idea. My problem is the rice. I've been canning for years and would never add rice to any jar. No pasta or any any type of rice. I'm going to try your cat food, but no rice.

    • @JoannaTrautman
      @JoannaTrautman 5 днів тому

      I understand completely. I think your cat food will be great if made without the rice. Rice is a potential risk factor in canning as it can inhibit heat transfer into the center of the food inside the jar. I cook the rice prior to the canning process and use long processing time because of this. The interior of the pressure canner easily achieves the safety zone temperature for destroying bacterial spores (like botulism), but the processing time is what allows the heat to transfer within the jars. Now, in the instance that spores survive the canning process and grow into a bacterial colony that can make people sick, there are signs, like bulging jar lids and foul odor when the jar is opened. Basically, the signs of bad food. This can happen with any foods that you can, and is one of the inherent risks of canning food, period. Again, thank you for watching, Joanna

    I’m searching for recipes because 1. Cat food is now .98 cents a can 😱 and half the time my cats turn their noses up at it!! 2. All the commercial food is making them sick. I see the difference from just 10 years ago. They need better!
