      We aren't low light "crazy" lol I've been selling cameras for 20 years and witness the conception of action cams and two features that's been requested since then and most wanted was better usable low light recording and yes, better zoom. Not one camera since has had either of those perfected and here we are, most people just can't be happy no matter what, a lot will just dig for the non critical negatives and dwell on them which I'm finding with a lot of user comments, it's really quite sad tbh lol

    Thanks for being more positive in this video. As someone who owns both the GoPro Hero 12 and Insta360 Ace Pro I have to say the Insta is AMAZING in low light (no shimmer or wiggle like the GoPro has). Personally, I need a camera that excels in low light and regular life situations as I'm not someone doing back flips off mountains. The Insta360 Ace Pro is my go to travel / low light camera now. (Any colour tone concerns with the Insta are compensated by adjusting the white balance.)

      It did come out looking like the king of low light, I can’t deny it, it’s right there in the tests. I swore GoPro was going to do a better job but it seems zero A.I. and a smaller sensor really couldn’t match what the Insta360 is pushing.

    I know it isn't relevant to this test, but for selfish reasons I'd have liked to see the iPhone 15 Pro Max included, because I have one along with a Hero 12 and you've convinced me that the Hero 12 is worthless for low light (at least, compared to the Ace Pro). It's tempting to buy an Ace Pro for the low-light performance, but if the iPhone can do a comparable job then I wouldn't need to-I don't do "action cam" stuff in the dark, so the many, many other differences between them aren't important to me. Anyway, your videos are absolutely *great*, and I want to thank you for them.

    • @PhillipSkraba
      @PhillipSkraba  9 місяців тому +1

      I have been asked quite a few times to compare it to the iPhone 15 Pro Max, and I might actually have to do that, but in experience with the iPhone, I still think the Ace Pro will come out on top. Thanks!

      @Reactivelight 9 місяців тому

      I dunno... Other comparisons on UA-cam make it seem like a toss-up, with the iPhone maybe having *slightly* better dynamic range (more detail in brighter areas during night shots). But I'm not as confident in the methodology of other reviewers as I am in yours. Besides, they are vastly less entertaining. 🙂

    Wow, Ace killed GoPro in this immensely, we are starting to see more and more reviews out now, and some aren't even using GoPro because it's not even a contender, still the DJI A4 as it's direct competition. As for the low light, not only sundown shooting, for scuba divers, lighting is essential in terms of clarity and color where I think the Ace will shine. This review is obviously a no brainer lol Thank you, great review!

    So see the thing is...the only reason why we notice any camera being better then the other is because the attention has been brought to the viewers to pay attention to it.
    I could make a 'creative' video in low light using either of these cameras and most people watching it, won't even think about it the low light quality is good or not (unless it was completely crap). They will be too busy enjoying the creative aspect of the video.
    I think every action camera gives you very good daylight video ESPECIALLY if the video comes from a very creative aspect. The audio and the creativity will almost ALWAYS supercede these small differences in light output between action cameras.
    You guys bringing attention to specifics between cameras is what get the couch critiques going nuts. I will make a set of cool videos using cameras I won't mention until the end of the video and people will e joy the video because of the creative approach no matter the time of day!
    It's up to the potential consumers to know what exactly what type of content creator they will be. Then figure out what type of content they will create and then figure out which camera best fits their needs.
    I have a hero 8 and hero 10 which gives me 'watchable' low light footage. Good enough where my creativity will override the video quality. Be creative and people will watch you videos. Don't get too caught up in these specifics.
    Remember....the Action4 just a few months ago had everyone on its nuts when it came out with it's low light performance. Now you have SOME reviewers who are now acting like it doesn't perform good in low light anymore because this insta360 is now out on the market. It's craaazy how it plays out like that sometimes

    • @ryanwinchester3864
      @ryanwinchester3864 9 місяців тому

      lol no chance.. go pro low light footage in models before the 12 are absolutely unusable. Hardly usable for the 12.

    • @Jonasegway
      @Jonasegway 9 місяців тому

      @@ryanwinchester3864 stay tuned! My hero 10 for example puts out better low light footage then my hero 11. I'm not sure how GoPro did it, but the hero 10 has that pre-selected 'low light' option and when compared with the Hero 9-11 along with the Action3, it went as follows from best to worse.
      - Hero 10
      - Hero 11
      - Action 3
      - Hero 9
      And theeeen I found my hero 8 behind my couch this past weekend and decided to take it with me to work and out of curiosity ran a series of low light test between it and my hero 10 and my Hero 8 seems to give me a little more light output in dark scenarios then my hero 10.
      I will put the resolutions on the screen etc etc. If another UA-camr posted such a video and the results dictate what I am observing, I would find it hard to believe but from where I stand, the older hero cams DID come with this "low light" pre-setting the newer heros haven't come with (with the exception of the hero 9) as I didn't observe pre-selected low light settings in that camera and it seems to work well.
      I want to reiterate when I say "useable" I mean something you could actually watch if it's entertaining enough. If you are watching something with the intention to critique it's low light performance period, you may look at it and say it's unuseable.
      If I for example was your favorite UA-camr and I made a lowlight video with a Hero 10 "for example" I would say you would find the quality 'useable'. I hope I explained that properly. The hero 11 couldn't hold a candle to the Hero 10 in my comparisons using as much of their sensors as possible adjusting ISO/Shutter speed/fps values and well as recording in gopro's recommended widest lens/aspect ratio option. I am still putting it together.
      Overall it's for you to decide. I just felt the gopro's output isn't that bad if you are watching the video to enjoy the content rather then watching to evaluate the hardware being used to record the content.

    • @PhillipSkraba
      @PhillipSkraba  9 місяців тому +1

      The Action 4 is as good as the Ace Pro in low light in my opinion, it just lacks the A.I. ability to stabilise the footage well enough, with stabe off it might even be brighter, but people like stabe, so there's that. The Hero 12 to my surprise in this test fell very far behind.
      However, I agree with you. Once you pull the audience in, once you capture them with a story, they don't care if they're watching it on a calculator or an Arri Alexa. The thing is most people who buy these cameras are looking for the best quality in the most situations, with the least post production. At the moment the Ace Pro seems to deliver that, with the Action 4 being catered to a more advanced group who prefer the option to have a more thorough workflow including colour grading.

    • @PhillipSkraba
      @PhillipSkraba  9 місяців тому +1

      For pixel peeping, yep, for the story, like I mentioned above, it can be used and not take notice of. I used to film in low light situations with GoPros 10 years ago, now those were completely different times, the pixels were as big as your hand lol.

    • @Jonasegway
      @Jonasegway 9 місяців тому

      @@PhillipSkraba yes yesss we are seeing eye to eye on this. I didn't want my response to the gentleman to be too long (I have a habit of going on and on and on sometimes) but I always feel context is everything.
      What I love about your 'showings' is you put the equipment through their paces. You ride a motorcycle, you drive, walk, 'quick' run, perform b-roll type of footage giving viewers a slew of scenarios while showing them how the cams perform in different scenarios in different lighting.
      I am a heavy GoPro user and I skipped on the hero 12. More because of the lack of GPS chip as I love having telemetry data in my action footage when applicable and then taking it out just turned me off. Not to mention, when I sat down and thought about it, I realized that they are all very good in the daylight so that is not a problem for me. But sometimes I like to do my motorcycle rides at night, or ride my electric scooters at night and at high speeds.
      So for me I like to also take that information, record and then put it online for people who may be using these action cameras to record night rides on EUC's, long boards, and electric scooters to see how these cams perform for their use case. That's when I noticed how much better the Hero 10 is then the Hero 9, Action 3, Hero 11 and hero 12 footage when I look at videos online of Hero 12 low light footage.
      Obviously the Action 4 is BETTER then the Hero 10 in low light but I always think.....is the Hero 10 low light footage (depending on the lighting) at least still useable?
      Us motovloggers who can record hours of footage usually record in 1080p (or 1440 if available) to reduce file size allowing us to record many video clips without running out of space. That dang hero 8 records in 1440p in the 16:9 ratio which is perfect for motovloggers. (Hero 9/10/11 doesn't even offer that setting). So I try to bring out all of these differences according to people's needs and budget.
      I don't recall if the arrow 12 has a pre-selected low light setting like the hero 8 and the hero 10 does but hopefully the hero 13 does and if they can just bring up the sensor size a little bit I think they would really do some damage to the current competitors.
      P.s. I think GoPros problem is they have too many separate entities within the company itself. They are california-based but then they have suppliers in China and other parts of Asia making parts for their cameras. Now you have to buy sensors from Sony and now we have too many hands on the pot to make the company run. DJI and insta360 are their own entities. They are completely based and manufactured in China which makes their overall blah blah basically I think GoPro has to spend more money to run as a company then their competitors which is making this hard for them to stay competitive with hardware and price points. But time will tell.

    I have the Ace Pro, Pocket 3, and the Hero12. The Ace Pro is not nearly as good as the Pocket 3 at night. If I am holding the Ace Pro very still, the video is quite good. But even at Pro Video, the Ace Pro causes the light sources to shake in the distance when I am walking with the Ace Pro attached to the GoPro Volta. I wasn't even walking very fast. I'm sure it will do well with a gimbal, but if that's the case, it defeats the purpose of buying it over the Pocket 3 which has amazing low light video by the way

      I totally agree and wonder how many times it’s been stress tested. I’ve had a few laptop screens that had suffered from this problem where the tape broke and the screen started loosing lines of pixels. Here though, the tape is rubber, and it’s got a fair bit of play when it’s fully open, so hopefully there isn’t too much stress on it. I need to ask Insta if they have any test info on it, as this is the way most vloggers would use it. The GO3 has the same system, so far it’s okay but I don’t open and close it so much due to the fact I can take the camera out and still look at the screen.

    Problem here is you're comparing a hero 12 to an Ace Pro. The Ace Pro is about $200 more expensive than the hero 12. I have yet to see someone do apples to apples by comparing the Insta 360 Ace to the Hero 12.

    in ace pro, for me, the stabilization and very good noise reduction at night are amazing, which makes these materials very useful for an amateur, the tilting screen also worries me, because I dive into the sea with my cameras and if I use them at all, it is in where even I can get hurt. salt water and hinges or cables do not like each other. In Hero 12, as in every Hero, the stabilization is not very useful even in worse conditions, despite HDR, large blocks of noise are still visible. Personally, I prefer the finely grained DJ noise, although I could use a faster shutter and the temperature sensor is great, I wouldn't have to set the temperature for each clip.
    It's nice that you compare so much and don't make the usual advertising gibberish, thank you !

    • @PhillipSkraba
      @PhillipSkraba  9 місяців тому +2

      I'm glad they're helpful. Yes, I think people might be worried about the screen, but underwater I think it might be okay, and also at 90 degrees might also be easier to film with when diving, no idea, you'd have to try and let us know. DJI does have nice noise, I agree with that. As for the Ace Pro, after reading a lot about it, I'm shocked that the noise is removed by A.I. in low light and how well it works, especially with stabilisation, I had no idea it was doing that.

      @@PhillipSkraba that's what I heard about the AI method when recording videos. If I understood correctly, it works as it should, otherwise all AI functions are performed after reading from the sensor before compression, thanks to which the output material is of better quality. I think this is the future here. with the rate of development that gopro has, it will be somewhere in hero 20 🤣. Although it's still amazing that dji without these features achieves effects that seem almost perfect for video processing.

    Being a bit more kinder but in doing so pandering to those who just didn't like the truth... At the end of the day as you said yourself the 'elephant in the room' is that non removable lens cover. You can take all the features of the Ace Pro, paint them as you like and sell them as many times as you want but the fact is that none of it counts if your footage is marred in the first instance by an optical flaw caused by a scratched or cracked lens cover. If all you want is a vlogging camera then the ACE Pro will fit the bill for most, but if you want to use it as an action camera, why would you want to ignore this and like many reviewers other than yourself decide to ignore it. What does it say about the honesty and integrity of those reviewing these. I don't own an Action 3 or 4, nor an Ace Pro and certainly not a GoPro so I am not battling for anyone here, just dismayed at the falsehood that surrounds this camera and its reviews.

    • @PhillipSkraba
      @PhillipSkraba  9 місяців тому +1

      Well, I’m just comparing it to other cameras in different situations so everyone can see what it really looks like, at the end of the day, the final image is the most important. I wanted to be a little fairer to this camera, and in that I decided to look at its pros instead of only cons as I had a lot of people call me out at being only negative about it, so okay, I can play fair and I can be nice. In that I looked at the camera, all its specs, no Log, no 10-bit, flip screen, etc, and came to the conclusion that it’s been marketed to the wrong crowd, or had been wrongly pigeon holed as an action camera. To me, this is a vlog camera, and it just could be the King of vlog. People with a Pocket 3 or an iPhone 15 don’t care about replaceable lenses, they like bigger screens, the want something that’ll get them from camera to social media quickly, without any fuss, with a clean image, day and night. The Ace Pro seems to tick all these boxes, and looking at it in this mindset completely changed my attitude towards the camera. So I’m giving it a chance in that regard. It’s a vlogging camera that can by chance shoot action.

      @@PhillipSkraba totally get where you’re coming from and your response sums up the situation in a nutshell. Personally I see the Ace Pro as a vlogging camera and not really meant for ‘action’. Trouble is when all the reviews compare and pitch it against the action 4 and the GoPro, it’s right and proper to identify its shortcomings in that area instead of ignoring them.
      If the reviewers can’t act with honesty and impartiality then how can those who watch these reviews trust them. Too much hype influenced potentially by the free product in return for a review.

      Well, I believe in being honest, even if a review is sponsored. I'd say the majority of my videos are sponsored, and I do my part to be honest. The good companies take that information and turn it in to positivity and evolve their products. The ones that don't like hearing it or censor it, those are the ones that will be probably lynched by the public.
      The thing with Insta360 is that I've been an affiliate with them for longer than most of the other companies I work with, and I honestly think they're great and strong believe in them and their innovation. I also do believe the whole Ace Pro launch was a misunderstanding due to technical issues, last minute changes - for the better of the camera, and I really think they mislabelled the camera as an action camera, to me, it's a vlog camera with the option to use as an action camera. This mislabelling had everyone comparing it to the Hero 12, which is a tank and an action camera with the option to vlog. That's my two pennies' worth.

    Thank you for taking another shot at the Insta 360 Ace Pro. This camera definitely shines compared to the Hero 12 in low light. The HDR and AI denoising brings back the color and details in the various lights, whereas the Hero 12 tends to overexpose the lights. Philip, your videos carry a lot of weight with me, and you really had me second-guessing my thoughts on purchasing the Ace Pro (as a replacement for the DJI Action 3) - but after further evaluation, plus this additional low-light review- I am firmly back on the Ace Pro band wagon.
    Further, in regards to the build confidence of the flip screen, a good friend of mine has the Insta 360 Go 3, which uses a similar flip screen. He got his when it came out months ago, and he uses it all the time for vlogging and in his studio, and has not had any issues with it.
    I agree with you in that it may depend on how the user plans to use this camera. Like most folks, I won’t be using it in “action” scenarios. The most extreme would be hiking and kayaking, and I don’t think those qualify! 😎

    It really is disappointing that you can't swap that lens cover, because the image quality is really good. But man, that is just such a deal breaker in an "Action" camera. I do find the idea of using it as a "vlogging camera" kind of funny. Is that a good form factor for vlogging? I guess it's easy to throw in a pocket. Just try hard not to scratch that lens cover when you do.
    While I would definitely like the low light performance, I do have larger cameras for that, which will outperform even the insta360 any way. I was 100% sold until I found out about that lens cover. Man that is so disappointing.

    I’ll be honest, I don’t use my 12 at night. The GoPro isn’t as good as the ace pro at night. I’d rather have a log profile and 10 bit colour.

      To be honest, I don't either, well, maybe on the odd occasion. I'm doing these tests for my own knowledge and to help you guys out. I think this is really more of a camera aimed at vloggers, people who want the footage fast to share on social media for example, so I'm guessing that's why we're missing Log and 10-bit in the Ace Pro.
