  • So, you hear a scuffle outside, some high pitched crying sounds, and as you run towards the commotion, you find one of your poor doggos looking like the cyclops Mike Whizousky. How did this happen? And what can you do about it? Your doggo is suffering from Proptosis. Watch this video to find out what that means and what you can do to help him.
Now the word “Proptosis” basically means the forward displacement of the eyeball, known as the globe, out of the eye socket, known as the orbit, with the eyelids trapped behind the globe. This is a very common ocular emergency and one that requires immediate veterinary attention.
The best chance for salvaging the eye and preserving vision is to perform surgery to reposition the globe as quickly as possible. Even an hour could mean the difference between saving and losing the eye, so if this ever happens to your poor doggo, then make sure you don’t waste precious time and take him to the vet as soon as you can.
Here is a breakdown of the info covered in this video:

My Chihuahua got into a fight with my Shih-Tzu and her eye popped out, we rushed her to the vet, my vet told me there was zero chance of saving her eye. They pushed her eye back in and sewn her eyelid, after 2 weeks the stitching was removed and thankfully she regained her vision.

We have had this issue with two of our ChinTzus. One had BOTH eyes pop out at different times! One was removed, the other saved but no vision, not even a flinch reflex. We were so concerned at first.... but no one told Lucy she was blind and she does fantastic with her othwr senses.

My puppy's right eye popped out caused by a bite on its head by a bigger dog. Why did my vet said that in pop out eye situations the percentage in saving the eye is close to 0%? .
The procedure they did was "eye lid sewing" . It means that they put the eye ball in place and sew the eye lids together.
To me it looks like the eye lids were stretched over the popped out eye instead of being put back..
Might be just swollen.. looks suspicious.

Thanks Khaya! :) I am soon going to start publishing tutorials for vet students (how to make a blood smear, insert an IV catheter etc.). Feel free to let me know if there are any specific practical skills that you think vet students would like to see?
