Your mention of lagophthalmos describes what I've been experiencing. This sensation after waking up that your eyelids are sticking to my eyeballs has been painful and alarming, after going to an eye doctor they tested for tear production which was found normal, they didn't mention the lagophthalmos or the allergy medication that you did. They acted as though this stickiness really wasn't that big a deal and told me to use more drops and use eye ointment at night which I can't tolerate because of the blurriness. I felt validated after seeing your video and at least have some steps to research now. Thank you!
My eye doctor used a stain eyedrop to find the pattern of small corneal holes that form as a result of exposure keratitis. The pattern for lagophthalmos and incomplete blinking is along the bottom of the eyeball near the lower lids. I know this because my ophthalmologist called all of his interns in to see the pattern on my eyes as it was typical of lagophthalmos and poor blinking. It was fun. If you want to find out if your eyes are affected by that, you can ask your doctor to do the tests next time you have an exam. I have to wear a mask and use the dreaded ointment at night, which is a necessary evil if I want to prevent damage to the cornea. The blurriness goes away once you wash your in the morning.
I have Epithelial Basal Membrane Dystrophy, which means that the top two layers of the eye don’t stick together properly. So with the dry eye thing, I get the eyes sticking to the eyelid overnight, and then I tear my cornea in the morning. (OWWWW!) Fun times. I use a 5% hypertonicity saline ointment (prescribed by my doc, but available OTC) at night pretty religiously. Yes, this means I have blurry vision issues. At first, I resisted the ointment, because I normally would read myself to sleep (for like, my entire life since about age 8!). The answer for me was to switch to audiobooks at night. It was a hard transition, but there are so many good books available via audible and for online download from libraries these days that I have really enjoyed it. Great for keeping myself entertained while doing housework, too. :) So if you are like me, and have had a doc recommend ointment at night, go check out audiobooks! Good luck!

For me, cutting out the sugar, carbs, and going on a modified keto diet with a bit of walking daily did the trick for me. Once again highly informative video. I so wish you were my eye dr. I have fibromyalgia & chronic pain. I’m on two medications for that which have been very effective. But are they drying my eyes out? I’ve stopped taking them to see. I’m doubled over with pain and inflammation and it would appear it hasn’t made a bit of difference. I use nighttime gel eye drops about every time I wake up. But at some point my lid sticks to my eye. Either my eye or the lid moves and I bolt up in severe pain. Yada yada yada. It’s been the better part of a year now. Not sure what else to be doing outside of eye drops. We need more eye doctors out there like you. Thanks for taking your time to put out all of this information for everyone. Greatly appreciated.
GREAT INFORMATION!!!!! WOW!!! I will be back for more. I have extremely dry eyes. Wake up in the morning and some times can't open my left eye. Thanks again Hope future video will help my situation.
I suffer badly from dry eyes and have from teenage years when on waking up I had to put water in my eyes. It has got worse with old age (83) but my Indian pharmacist eventually recommended his grandmother's remedy of a drop of Castor oil in each eye before going to sleep. It has helped a lot.
Such a great explanation!!! I love how you broke down Aqueous Deficiency versus Evaporative Dry Eye since this is how I think about dry eye as well (I can versus I can't make tears).
Thank you for the information, your video is easy to follow, informative and clear to understand. I am going to watch your other videos on the topic of dry eyes which is a problem I have developed in the last 8 years.
I don’t understand why people have give this a thumbs down 🤨🙄 i am from England and that’s the best information I’ve heard about my dry eyes. Why are people so negative!! 🤦♀️
I wear contact lenses. My dry eye issues really started about 6 months after my daughter died. In my case, I think severe stress from that grief played a part in it.
Thank you, sir. After 4 years in pain and feeling hopeless about my DES, now I can treat it by myself (because almost doctors in my place do not know how to cure it, some doctors know but they do not want to treat completely for me so they can earn more money)
This was very useful! My doctor says I have the evaporative type. I went to the eye doctor because my vision was blurry and cloudy whether I wore glasses/contacts/neither. I thought I was going blind at an early age and was going to need a seeing eye dog and a white cane! But turns out it was "just" dry eye. I had no idea dry eyes could affect the vision that much.
I'm just finding out about all this. I'm scared I'm going blind too! My vision is bad since childhood so I wear contacts. I thought it was due to that but now my eyes are dry most of the time! And my vision is even more blur :(
Hey bro i m also having blurry and not cleared vision most probably due to dry eye... Please tell me how much time it had taken your eyes to get back to normal??

Love your videos, they are super informative! Could you cover the research on how retinoids can cause MGD and hence dry eye syndrome? I am trying to understand if this is the case only for oral retinoids (e.g. oral isotretinoin) or for topical ones applied to the face (but not the eye area). Do topical retinoids get absorbed into the bloodstream and hurt meibomian glands? Also, what about creams marketed for under the eyes which contain retinol or some variant of it (retinyl palmitate and such), as opposed to retinoids? Can they cause MGD? Thanks for your time!
Idk about topicals but oral meds like Accutane absolutely can cause dry eye, even years after. It would definitely be an interesting topic as to whether the topical retinoids might cause problems 🤔.
For computer use - it is important to have it set up so you look DOWN at the screen. This helps protect your eyes. Also wear blue blocker glasses if your computer set up doesn't have the option to block blue light. Most LED monitors = 400 candle light. And every computer monitor has a brightness adjustment. Click the menu button, choose the little sun icon and lower the brightness leve.
Nicely explained as always! Specially ur energy and enthusiasm for explaining is unique and really interesting! However, the only missing part after knowing the reasons of dry eyes is what're the cures for each? Well done by the way and keep going!
Thank you dearly for this information. Doctor I have dry eyes symptoms every day. I use Systane for dry eyes. I get my eyes checked every year because I am diabetic. So I make sure keep my eye moist/lubercated.
My daughter suffers from giant papillary conjunctivitis and is in pain a lot of the time. She’s tried OTC and Rx eye drops for relief, but isn’t having any luck. What is your recommendation to her?
I had dry eyes for several years, applied eye drops for many years... Then I started to take cod liver oil tablets.. Fantastic, NO dry eyes now!! And I don’t need to use eye drops anymore... I took 1 tablet each day for a week, now only need 1tablet twice a week..
Yes, this omega 3 is what we need. Also reduce your omega 6 by only using the very best olive oil, coconut oil and grass fed butter. Avoid the vegetable oils.
I suffer from dry eyes and was prescribed eye drops which I'm having for years. But lately spending too much time looking on the screens my eyes are getting weaker. Thank you for your informative video, I now understand the underlying causes of dry eyes. Before this video I even thought dry eyes is just dry eyes that can remedied by moisturizing eye drops.
My eyes get so gritty and sandy feeling all the time. Especially when I wake up. I’m 63 and this has been going on for about 2 years. Wish I could find relief. Can you help?❤️
Thanks Joseph for the comment. Happy to try my best to help. I think the best thing for you would be to find a local dry eye specialist for an evaluation. If you can make it to Sartell MN, we would be happy to help.
I somehow managed to get a large splash of cologne in my eyes a few years back and had severe dry eyes ever since. After seeing the eye doc and trying different ointments and drops, the only thing that ended up working is taking xiidra. and of course, it's super expensive.....
Xiidra is such an interesting medication. I have had some people do SUPER well with it but I have also had people with ZERO success with it and I have had some people have bad allergic reactions to it too. (I too have had chemical burns to the eye and yes, it sucks) I wonder if you lost some goblet cells on the ocular surface from it.
@Doctor Eye Health - I tried Xiidra and my eyes were burning and even more dry. Stopped after two days. The stuff is awful and really should be removed from the market. Most reviews are negative and complain of the same things such as irritation. Not only is the concoction ineffective and possibly harmful but it's outrageous price is a great example of the out of control avarice of big pharma.
I don't know which kind, just that it could be very painful. Bit since I started taking omega 3,6,9,the pain has gone my eye feels almost completely better. I did use drops also for a year, snd heat masks which were very soothing. But the Omega oils seems to be the answer
Excellent and completely understandable and informative video! Thank you very much! I have been dealing with dry eye for a little over a year, not knowing why I was having these uncomfortable symptoms. I saw a optometrist for a vision check, and was suggested I try a specific eye drop. The condition hasn’t improved so I know that I need to seek out a ophthalmologist to be evaluated.I do have a form of arthritis also, so this makes better sense to me after watching your video!
Hi Doctor! I enjoy watching your videos! I currently have glaucoma. In the past I had cataract surgery and glaucoma surgery to help with my eyes. I would like your opinion on getting progressive lenses and bifocals as well as type of lenses ( polycarbonate, trivex, and glass). Additionally AR and transition lenses. Thank you!
All great topics to cover. In general I think progressives are better than bifocals but everyone is different. Anti-reflective is great but some are better than others. I like the Crizal saphire 360. Transitions are great and I love them buy again, not for everyone. I personally do not like polycarbonate lenses, cr39 or trivex is way better but high index is nice if you have a high Rx
Very informative, thank you 😊 , I have both forms, it is often painful. I use drops and hot compress and an eye mask at night because my husband runs the ceiling fan which makes it worse. tried contacts but they actually stuck on my eyes. Just hoping it won’t cause any more serious eye damage.
Hey Doctor Eye Health, I have an issue with glare while driving at night. What can I do to reduce this glare? Is AR reflective coating or Crizal lenses going to help me?
1. If you do not wear glasses or any correction, you may benefit from optical correction. 2. Glasses with high end anti-reflective may help but keeping clean glasses and a clean windshield should help as well. 3. Yellow "driving glasses" usually dont help in my opinion, but I know some people rave about them, something to consider. 4. If you have abnormally large pupils, you may talk to your doctor about some eye drops that can help constrict your pupils which may be used before driving at night. I have patients I have prescribed for and it does help them. Hope that helps!

Just got diagnosed with dry eye syndrome yesterday so here I am.
For me, cutting out the sugar, carbs, and going on a modified keto diet with a bit of walking daily did the trick for me. It took about 1 1/2 months after making the lifestyle/nutritional changes, but my vision did come back 100% thank God! Taking care of that fatty liver, I believe, was a major part in tackling the source of what was causing my dry eyes.
Your young but you're thorugh. I love this. Keep doing what your doing.
Because I work on a computer all day my blink rate feels like 1 blink an hour lol! Eyes def got redder in the past year. Making me nervous.
Makes me nervous too.
@@lisadiconti It's gotten much better ever since I got in the habit of looking away from the computer for 20 seconds every 20 minutes, drinking more water (filtered water) and the basics of eating more collagen and vitamins. Just increasing my health period.
@@TechOutAdam Thanks for the tip. I've been teaching remote 8:30 - 3:30 every day. I'm so done with it. 9 more days.
I only use oils and ointments around my lids. No troubles using retinol type products from top of cheekbones down and from brows up. Used accutane for four days when in my early twenties on dermatologist’s recommendation and prescription. When my eyes and skin turned yellow I made emergency appointment and told him I would never use it again.
I have Sjögren's syndrome and needed eyedrops on a very regular basis. 2 years ago I started taking a Sea Buckthorn capsule once a day and since then have not needed eye drops at all. Thank you for the video.

Valuable information Thank you Dr

My pleasure! I'm so glad you find it helpful.
Great explanation of dry eye and it's causes.

Do you get tears while crying?
Idk about topicals but oral meds like Accutane absolutely can cause dry eye, even years after. It would definitely be an interesting topic as to whether the topical retinoids might cause problems 🤔.
For computer use - it is important to have it set up so you look DOWN at the screen. This helps protect your eyes.
Also wear blue blocker glasses if your computer set up doesn't have the option to block blue light. Most LED monitors = 400 candle light.
And every computer monitor has a brightness adjustment. Click the menu button, choose the little sun icon and lower the brightness leve.
Thanks i suffered from dry eyes, your information is useful

I somehow managed to get a large splash of cologne in my eyes a few years back and had severe dry eyes ever since. After seeing the eye doc and trying different ointments and drops, the only thing that ended up working is taking xiidra. and of course, it's super expensive.....
Xiidra is such an interesting medication. I have had some people do SUPER well with it but I have also had people with ZERO success with it and I have had some people have bad allergic reactions to it too. (I too have had chemical burns to the eye and yes, it sucks) I wonder if you lost some goblet cells on the ocular surface from it.
@@DoctorEyeHealth Do goblet cells restore?
@Doctor Eye Health - I tried Xiidra and my eyes were burning and even more dry. Stopped after two days. The stuff is awful and really should be removed from the market. Most reviews are negative and complain of the same things such as irritation. Not only is the concoction ineffective and possibly harmful but it's outrageous price is a great example of the out of control avarice of big pharma.
Feeling ĺonely. . Would anyone like to chat.. many thanks

Very informative. Thank you.
