Being the fact that it’s so underrated makes driving it that much more fun. There’s 2 different types of reactions: “tf is that” & “HOLY SHIT ITS A CONQUEST”
There nice cars. I have had one since 1997. It doesn't want to crank at the moment. Actually for a while. Just tired of it and no want to on getting it running. It is very much modified.
@@gac3121955 If you have a crank no start, and you have fuel pressure, and spark, check the tachometer and see if it wiggles up and down during cranking. If it doesn’t, then take a close look at the igniter (also referred to as the knock box) they are known to fail on 87 and earlier cars with most failures being recorded on the 1987 models. In 1988 they updated the knock box which gets rid of the issue. What’s happening is the crank signal that syncs the fuel system is missing which is what is responsible for firing the fuel injectors and running the tachometer. The igniter is responsible for giving the ECM the trigger signal to fire them and when that signal is weak or missing the car fails to run because the injectors won’t open. A stupid trick I do is take a test light and tie one end to the negative post of the coil, and tie the other end to the trigger line on the igniter that sends the sync signal to the ECM. A lot of times the car will start and run even after you remove it. The car should also continue to run, and restart for a while (in some cases for days or even weeks). If this is the issue, then chances are your igniter is toast. Napa Auto parts can get them for you as well but unfortunately they aren’t cheap. Last I checked they were $487.00 😳 hope this helps man, we can’t have your car just sitting up not getting any love!
My first turbo car, and consequently the first turbo I blew up. Learnt not to mess with the wastegate. Was like driving a 2 stroke MX bike, nothing, nothing, nothing, POWER, Redline. You were forever pulling out into traffic, holding up the car behind for a few seconds and then tearing off like a total jackass once boost finally arrived. Desperately needed an intercooler and that side body injection, well talk about antique. Still a lot of fun for a young fella, and it felt like driving KITT from the Nightrider especially inside, super futuristic, sure impressed the ladies. I still see the odd one around, and it sure stands out and makes me smile.
So happy to see the Starion get some UA-cam love! I've been restoring one here in australia for a better part of a year. The biggest downfall is the lack of information available and the lack of tuning potential with the stock ecu. And the rust haha
Do a 6 bolt 4g63t swap, my buddy has a fully built big turbo AWD talon a custom Sheppard trans that puts 6-700hp to the wheels, it's scary fast , fkn scary, but has been pretty reliable, he daily drives it every once in a while, a lot more potential than the older 4g63
Back in the 90’s when I lived in NJ, an older friend had one of these. It was a golden/bronze color. I took a few rides in it, and man that thing pushed you into your seat!
David Milliman Congratulations! I have an 85 turbo that I got running a few months ago. Did an EGR delete and, I’m working on the suspension issues rn. But I drive it around and it’s pretty damn fun.
My dad had 2 when they first came out , a silver one with oil cooled turbo, then in red with intercooled turbo, that's was the coolest car ever , I was like 5 , still have pictures of me playing in it , my dad was a muscle car guy, he had a Plymouth roadrunner with 440 six pack before he met my mom, but he had a soft spot for japanese sports cars , I guess after the gas crisis in the 70's , he dug the better milage , and reliability, he had a gold Datsun 280z and a Toyota Celica gt also , but that starion still looks cool af even if it was new today
so just some info from a 88 conquest owner. The engine was actually designated as the the 4G54 and was a SOHC throttle body injection set up in the US. I think only the group B/euro/jdm cars got a 4g63 motor. 1983 was the only year with a hood scoop. Overall great video tho! I appreciate the attention on the starquests.

This makes me happy, 19 y/o over here and in the recent month and a half I picked up three of them, all non running. All projects, all ESi-R/TSi. 86. As some mentioned before me, US market got the 2.6 4G54 and the rest got the option of the 4G54 or the 2.0 4G63. Both ran TBI on the 54 or 63
I have owned four of these in total and currently I have an 88 Conquest in the garage going through a rebuild of the 4g54b. They usually have the same problems from neglect. Most people don't start them enough and then all the gaskets, vacuum lines, fuel filters, gas tank and hoses start to rot and fail. I have gotten two different Conquests back on the road because they just need new injector pigtails or new injectors. I also bought a Station from a kid in AZ in 2004ish. He had the vacuum lines hooked up all wrong.. which is funny because the diagram is right on the hood. He told me in didn't run right and the blow off valve was broken. After I bought it, I drove around the block and fixed the vacuum lines. When I started it back up it ran great. I forgot the car cover over there and he called and said I could come back for it. The look on his face was priceless as I drove off and the blow off valve let out a loud whistle. That was a nice car. I prefer the manual version but I like the auto too. Wicked video, I actually pit crew on that Group A Starion at 7:30, it's a giant killer! I've had over 20 Starions here in Australia, they're great cars.
Excellent episode. I owned a Conquest TSI 22 years ago. Til this day it’s the one car I wish I never sold. Amazing performance. If I see a deal on another it will be a must buy.

I have a youtube channel just about working on my starions called starion garage, were you can see real starions being worked on.
Oh, I forgot to mention, Im only talking about US spec starions, australia, and europe and japan have are also different in a few ways. We (US) got 4G54 (aka g54b) motors, while other countries got 4G63. Other differences are turn signal lights, and door chimes, left hand drive, there were even a few special made ones with gulwing doors used for a TV show in japan.
This was my first car ❤️ it was a death trap but A fast one. caused some unwanted challenges but bad boy ran its best until it couldn’t. Learned the best lessons in connecting with machine from this car. Nowadays the closest I’ve gotten to seeing one is in the junk yard beyond saving. Brings a tear, but the best memories and has rendered me a manual driver for life.
This car was way ahead of its time. Back in the 90s my mom’s cousin had one, and I wanted to buy it as my 1st car. His brother laughing said “no, you don’t want it”. I could only imagine why, cause it wasn’t running at the time, and he couldn’t figure out why, and he was a mechanic at the time!!
Take one all-black Starion with blackout windows. Add one Jackie Chan and one Jaws. Put them in a race with an all-star Hollywood cast and you have The Cannonball Run 2. This car is a forgotten classic. It was iconic in the 80's. A full blooded sports car that didn't cost exotic money. It's a shame it doesn't get the recognition it deserves.
I have an 87 Starion. I'm finally started to rebuild the motor this week after 25 years of having as a daily driver. I always get people walking up and asking what kind of car is it. It always get compliments even though it needs a paint job. I plan to slowly restoring it. Great video!
It's crazy cause I started last week looking for one. Then on Friday I went to get a cut and I have never seen one in person. On my way back home I see one going in the other direction. Then today this drops? I'm think I'm buying it lol
I was rapping 90s muscle cars in the 90s with my conquest and drove it 10 years hard without any repairs except the tires... For it's time she was a beast... I40mph all stock beating an 87 Monte Carlo SS with esse.... Omg I miss them days.....
My dad purchased an 87 Conquest TSI brand new. Loved that car and always dreamed of owning one. A month ago I purchased a running 88 Conquest TSI that needs some work. I am over the moon happy about it. I honestly can't think of any car modern or classic that checks off all the boxes for me that this one does.
@@FitmentIndustries I plan on just restoring her to be as original as possible. Luckily the one I purchased Is completely unmodified and complete. It is truly a survivor. Just needs a lot of odds and ends and some minor cosmetic stuff. Eventually I plan on just driving her on weekends and taking her to cars and coffee. Btw fantastic video you produced.
Owned a 89 Conquest TSI sold it at NOPI Nationals in Atlanta. Wish I had it back I loved that car. Swap the head for a custom one with no jet valves, ax the cat, ditch the silence cam, and turn the boost up.
F yes! I’m glad y’all made this video, I tried buying a conquest when I was 17 but the old guy said it wasn’t for sale, I was drawn to the cool styling
Back in the day I almost bought one. I decided on the Chrysler Laser Turbo 2.2 with a 5 speed. It was rumored to be one of the fastest production cars in 1985. I bought it new off the lot and had a blast with that car! It was silver with red interior and I put on rear window louver and a bra. Stylin!!
This Starion was the same era as Mazda RX-7 Mk1 ( Savanna ), Toyota Supra MK2 ( A60 ) and Nissan Fairlady 280ZX ( S130). My friend had one and flipped it :) on a wide corner, back in 1983.
It's crazy how the further we go back in cars, the more they all look alike. Like this car looks like an FC if you don't know your cars. Go even further back and the old school skyline looks like a mini muscle car
So I have a starion and I am not going to lie guys, they are not cars for the faint of heart. The electronics are a pain in the ass and the motor is not very great. However, they are still my favorite car due to all the quirks and the damn good looks that come with the car.
Had an 89 esi-r. Bad ass. Upgraded the turbo and intercooler, balance shaft eliminated. It kicked hard. Ate 5.0 mustang's for breakfast. Still an underrated jdm
I'm a Fox Body fan, and I saw one of these at a recent car show and I'm in love. To me they have very similar lines, and it looks awesome. The guy at the show had an absolutely MINT survivor that he's the original owner of, with no mods to the engine (besides dress-up stuff and even then he said he still has all the original bits that he could put back on) and extremely limited and tasteful exterior mods. Absolutely beautiful car...it looked brand-new. Little did I know, the Starion/Conquest is the only car I've ever not been able to find for sale on the internet. It's sad. Maybe one day I'll find one...
Oh hey I have one😏 87 Conquest! These definitely are getting hit with the appreciation tax. The last few years they’ve really gone up. I searched for 7 years for mine just to find a clean one in good shape!
My father had one of these when I was a kid. My brother drove it into the ground... well.. more like jumping hills. Got sold to our mechanic. I dream of owning one some day.
I had a Serbia black Conquest TSI as my first car... I loved it and miss it dearly. Btw, the US got the SOHC TBI 2.6L G54B (4G54) while the rest of the world had the option of a SOHC variant of the 4G63. That's likely a good bit of the reason they were never very popular here.
@Ernie H considering most of the interior was leather or vinyl, yes I miss the interiors as well. The console and radio surround was about the only brittle plastic part. RX7s suffered just as bad.
Thanks dad for making the video I requested. My dad gave it to me when I was 16 as my first car and the head gasket was nonexistent among a couple other things. I'm 20 now and it's almost done. A whole bunch of delays made it take this long but I just wanna get her out on the streets
Not me my dude. I'm 37 years old and my mother had a blacked out esi r ( the turbo wide body variant. ) When I was a little kid and I could never properly pronounce Mitsubishi at the time so I just kept calling the car K.I.T.T from Knight Rider even though I knew it wasn't the same car. I just kept calling it the Japanese version of Knight Rider. 😂 That car has always held a special place in my 7 to 8-year-old little heart. Although now that I think about it as an adult I should probably get one. But I have a z32 instead.
I bought a flatbody starion late 2019 and none of my friends or family members knew what it was, it's in really good condition but the engine is old and tired, the guy I bought it from was the original owner who caught it in 85 in DC and drive it all the way to Idaho when he moved. One of the most comfortable card I've ever been in and runs super smooth.
Honest to God i look forward to these videos because the trap boom in the intro sounds so good and he never plays it ever again. And talks and talks and talks.
I own a 1988 Mitsubishi Starion ESI-R and nobody knows what it is. I've always loved the SQ's for being the slept-on underdog. The thing is so 80's, it hurts!!!
I have owned 3 since 1994. My neighbor had a 1986 and was a car dealer, He always had many cars come and go but always kept his Starion. So in 1994 I got one then in 1995 a second project car that I ended up parting out, then in 1997 I got a perfect condition low miles Conquest at the time 48k. All were 1987 models but the one I bought in 1997 I still have today! The factory 4G54 is on the shelf and a custom 4G63 wide block is going in now. All I can say is these were my Favorite car of the 80's. It was way ahead of its time and even back in the 90's nobody knew what it was... lol. I would always get people saying is that a 944? is that a Supera with flare fenders? Is it front wheel drive? And because they are zippy everyone thought it had a V6. Most people didn't know what a turbo could do in those days... Great Video! I always love the Starion videos on UA-cam!!!
I had an '87 ESI-R back in 1990 and I loved it. How I found this video is I am actually toying around with the idea of buying another one. I just want to keep it stock and enjoy it for a few years. I just looked at JD Power and since 10/2020 these things have gone up 80+% in value! WOW! I'm still gong to look and may even consider selling the classic Thunderbird to get it.
in the 1990's i drove a black 1987 Mitsubishi Starion up the grapevine from LA to SF in the middle of the night doing over 100 mph pretty much the whole way, with Metallica's ride the lightning cranked on repeat

Has it always been reliable to you? Thinking about getting one.
Is the starion a decent first car
@@peep2912 If its running good and engine has been rebuilt but you definatley need to look it over since they are over 35years old.
You put wide fenders and the 89 splitter on the front ?
I WAS JUST THINKING ABOUT GETTING THIS CAR WTF!?!?!?!!?!?!
Yo same
Dudeee sameeeeeeeeeee
It's meant to be
It's crazy cause I started last week looking for one. Then on Friday I went to get a cut and I have never seen one in person. On my way back home I see one going in the other direction. Then today this drops? I'm think I'm buying it lol
Get it. It's a pain in the ass but when its running lawd
Mitsubishi rocks dont let anyone tell you otherwise
I was rapping 90s muscle cars in the 90s with my conquest and drove it 10 years hard without any repairs except the tires... For it's time she was a beast... I40mph all stock beating an 87 Monte Carlo SS with esse.... Omg I miss them days.....
“So you a Ford Taurus sho”
My dad purchased an 87 Conquest TSI brand new. Loved that car and always dreamed of owning one. A month ago I purchased a running 88 Conquest TSI that needs some work. I am over the moon happy about it. I honestly can't think of any car modern or classic that checks off all the boxes for me that this one does.
What are the big plans with them?! -Edgar
Back in August of 2019, I saw a Starion at a local car show, it was sick. It had a 1jz swap and was loud as hell.
Owned a 89 Conquest TSI sold it at NOPI Nationals in Atlanta. Wish I had it back I loved that car. Swap the head for a custom one with no jet valves, ax the cat, ditch the silence cam, and turn the boost up.
I’m going to be honest I’ve never heard of the Starion probably because I’m kinda young, but watching this video I want one
I've owned 2. 88 Chrysler Conquest and 87 Mitsubishi Starion. I love it!
F yes! I’m glad y’all made this video, I tried buying a conquest when I was 17 but the old guy said it wasn’t for sale, I was drawn to the cool styling
I had one of these. It was such an amazing car. I loved it.
As an owner of a Starquest, I approve of this video 👍
Actually drove a black one in high school. And also had a orange one. Absolutely loved it. Wish I could get my hands on another one
Stylin!!
Bra. Straight 80's. Nice
This Starion was the same era as Mazda RX-7 Mk1 ( Savanna ), Toyota Supra MK2 ( A60 ) and Nissan Fairlady 280ZX ( S130). My friend had one and flipped it :) on a wide corner, back in 1983.
I was lucky enough to own one of these as my first car in 96. It was because of this car that I got into dsms.
It's crazy how the further we go back in cars, the more they all look alike. Like this car looks like an FC if you don't know your cars. Go even further back and the old school skyline looks like a mini muscle car
Oh I wanted a video about the Starion so much! Btw I still think the stock rims of the sport trim look the best on this car.
Had one back in the day, spent a small fortune on it keeping it on the road. Did love the seats though
“we should bring back good scoops” ~ Alex 2020
So I have a starion and I am not going to lie guys, they are not cars for the faint of heart. The electronics are a pain in the ass and the motor is not very great. However, they are still my favorite car due to all the quirks and the damn good looks that come with the car.
One of my favorite cars in terms of looks, definitely top 5. An Awesome looking machine.
@Ernie H what’s your problem
Had an 89 esi-r. Bad ass. Upgraded the turbo and intercooler, balance shaft eliminated. It kicked hard. Ate 5.0 mustang's for breakfast. Still an underrated jdm
Take a shot every time he says “alright”
There's a starion out there with a 1jz and boy! its pretty 😍
His name is mikey and he has 3...look up mks on Facebook..hes a friend of mine
Just got an 86 starion back in June. I regret nothing 😂 🤣
Part 7 of asking for what no one else will... “So You Want A Hyundai Tiburon”
Drove the conquest years ago, a very underrated platform.
That Kavinsky comment at 7:50 attacked my soul... Here I was thinking i'm special 😂
Same here bro😂
Oh hey I have one😏 87 Conquest! These definitely are getting hit with the appreciation tax. The last few years they’ve really gone up. I searched for 7 years for mine just to find a clean one in good shape!
This car is one of my favorite cars ever. Especially the TSI’s and or LS swapped ones
My father had one of these when I was a kid. My brother drove it into the ground... well.. more like jumping hills. Got sold to our mechanic. I dream of owning one some day.
We share the similar story. Except I got lucky and own a 1986 starion😇
A turbo charged unreliable forklift motor with a turbo....they nailed the looks and put the wrong guts in. Maddening
@Ernie H considering most of the interior was leather or vinyl, yes I miss the interiors as well. The console and radio surround was about the only brittle plastic part. RX7s suffered just as bad.
Thank you. Mine was 2.6. It overheated constantly, and I had to replace several turbos.
7:16 Turbo, Turbo, Turbo written all over those electronic seatbelts! Lol, I remember it well.
That Jacket Kind Of Hits Home 🏠
Alex's "Hi" intro segments and Dakota's "Driver to Driver" intro segments give me serotonin.
Me speaking in marty mcfly: "Ive seen this one before"
Thanks dad for making the video I requested. My dad gave it to me when I was 16 as my first car and the head gasket was nonexistent among a couple other things. I'm 20 now and it's almost done. A whole bunch of delays made it take this long but I just wanna get her out on the streets
Actual video starts at 2:20
Finally someone doing one on the starion
I almost bought a starion back in the day,but I was poor back then :(
Save dat money 💰
Buying a Starion when you're poor will keep you poor.
I caught the slip up at 6:13 but I love the work that goes into these videos anyway. Keep up the good work!
I really like how it looks
Already own a Mitsubishi Starion. One of my dreams from watching Jackie chan movies. Because of the mitsubishi contract he had.
Don't lie a good chunk of you guys had no idea what the Starion is. I didn't know what it was until this video.
But I have a z32 instead.
nah I knew about it cos it was in top gear's 'the cool 500' book
I’m like 16 and I knew about this car
I bought a flatbody starion late 2019 and none of my friends or family members knew what it was, it's in really good condition but the engine is old and tired, the guy I bought it from was the original owner who caught it in 85 in DC and drive it all the way to Idaho when he moved. One of the most comfortable card I've ever been in and runs super smooth.
Don't like the Starion? Just watch Cannonball Run 2
Honest to God i look forward to these videos because the trap boom in the intro sounds so good and he never plays it ever again. And talks and talks and talks.
Day 45 of asking fitmend industries to do so you want a suzuki cappuccino
my mans commited
i believe in you, FI, and Jesus
Hhaha thanks artemi
I want a suzuki Cappacino to match my suzuki samurai
Just get a Mazda Miata and paint it pink with rainbows if you want a girly clown car that damn bad😂🤡
I own a 1988 Mitsubishi Starion ESI-R and nobody knows what it is. I've always loved the SQ's for being the slept-on underdog. The thing is so 80's, it hurts!!!
Most of us only knew about this car from the Top Gear challenge, I was one of them...
Thats lit
Can we get a happy birthday for Alex’s wife! 🙌
Consider my like said happy birthday
My friend's mom had one while we were in high school. We "borrowed" it many nights. I am lucky to be alive.
No.
Much love, your friends at Rev Media!!
You are everywhere.
@@ultraguy8771 it could just be to promote his channel idk or he actually likes this channel
Day (insert how many days) of seeing Rev media...
Had one in 84. To enjoy the handling I would look for backroads to get everywhere. But it's true that no one knew what it was, even in it's day.
I have tried looking for a Station once I couldn't find soz
Bring a trailer. They pop up once a year or so.
They are all over offerup
this has gone from fun facts about everyday cars to learning about entirely new ones, and that's awesome
THANK YOU GUYS for switching back to the old intro!
lol i was the one that said to do a so u want on this car xd
🤟🏼
Me too I was waiting for this vid and I’m so hyped lol
@@heyitsdurancitooo5212 ikr it was perfect to i was out driving and saw one today and i also saw two mr2s 1st and 2nd gen
Wept Editz that’s cool
I had an '87 ESI-R back in 1990 and I loved it. How I found this video is I am actually toying around with the idea of buying another one. I just want to keep it stock and enjoy it for a few years. I just looked at JD Power and since 10/2020 these things have gone up 80+% in value! WOW! I'm still gong to look and may even consider selling the classic Thunderbird to get it.
So you want: 2nd Generation Mitsubishi Eclipse (I know you already did DSM’s but do just the eclipse plz 😢)
Im 16 and the Mitsubishi starion prob has to be my fav car ever
So u want a Honda civic conv- I mean honda beat
My brother had one. They are BAD ASS
If this car go up and value I'm going to blame it on you. so close
Great the car value went up😭
in the 1990's i drove a black 1987 Mitsubishi Starion up the grapevine from LA to SF in the middle of the night doing over 100 mph pretty much the whole way, with Metallica's ride the lightning cranked on repeat
Ayeeee HELL YEAH BROTHER! -Edgar
Day 1 of asking #FitmentIndustries to make "So You Want A Nissan Maxima V6"
I've owned a total of 19 Conquest / Starions, and own one now. They are pretty amazing.
I've just own my 1, since 1997.
You in any clubs? I have 2 and my 89 is a shp....I had 6 all together..I'm in clubs on Facebook...just seeing if I know you
