Best female Singer/Fry Screamer don't know how she fry screams like that can that even be healthy long term I worry about that David Townsend is getting close to50 and he is really having hard time doing it at all anymore his body don't heal the same so his throat is less callus. Which is how fry screamer do it they rip the troat to shreds so it's callused up. if you straight hard do it anyway not just add a hint of it but she full out belting fry scream.
I love the vocal fry she adds to the lines "watching me as..." and "It could all be yours." towards the end of this song. She didn't do that in the album version (or it's harder to hear in the mix/layering if she did) and I think it adds just a little extra special something to the end of this song.
The album version is not as extreme as the one take. She does more of a typical gritty, rock fry sort of thing which was cool because I hadn't really heard that from her before. But I very much prefer this version, with the straight up screams on certain words. Really showcases how she can just turn that on and off at will. Really cool.
The lyrics in the breakdown that she screams give me chills every single time. It's so powerfully delivered. "I held the power of a dying sun, I climb the altar and take. my. place. as. god" shivers
Yes! Sleep token! I hope I get to see SPIRITBOX and SLEEP TOKEN tour together in the US. Mostly because I’ve never heard metal like these 2 bands and I’m 38. These 2 bands are just PHENOMENAL. I’ve never had 2 different bands that brought out music around the same time and both their music gives me chills, lump in the throat, and water works in the eyes.
Seems like she’s ALWAYS had a phenomenal singing voice. Naturally gifted with. But almost seems like she’s MASTERED the art of guttural screaming. Which is why she can transition from scream to immediate melody. I’ve never heard anyone sing/scream like this before.
Highly suggest the song “Is It Really You?” by Loathe and Sleep Token (bands in the same sphere of Spiritbox). Absolutely beautiful with a lot to unpack!
One of the things I love about this channel is when you pause to share a random thought that came to you while listening (like the end of this song, when you commented about relationships) - it's these moments of connection that I relate to as a listener and lover of music. They come to me as well, like footholds on the climb, or trails in the forest, finding moments of my life and experiences reaching to and from a song, sometimes even when the larger scope of the song might not be about that or w/e - the moments of connection are like synapses that give it a place for me to sit and then step off from as we (the listener and the song) learn a meaning for each other. You sometimes hear an artist or author talk about the piece finding a meaning or teaching the creator its story after its been put out there and given to the world. Like a growing child, no longer in the artist's womb. I feel like those moments are that - the listeners and the song experiencing each other, and then forming that individual connection.
Courtney is metal vocalist goals. STARSET - Manifest (Live), Telekinetic, Something Wicked, Trials reimagine. Bad Omens - The Death of Peace of Mind Silverchair - the entire Diorama album. Or just pick any song from it. It's a damn masterpiece, and it is 20 years old this year!
@Ana Carolina Pulga I'm kinda bummed because they were supposed to play with Every Time I Die. But since they broke up, Bad Omens are taking their place
I've probably seen 40 plus reviews of this one take, and you're the only so far to put any take on the meaning of the song. Sort of shows the mindset of you listening not only to Spiritbox's /Courtney's caress and power.. but take in what it could be all about!... definitely a rarity!.
When you were talking about plastic surgery, the first person I thought was Courtney Cox from friends. Like maaaan she was absolutely stunning growing up, and then I guess she felt the need to keep being the “beautiful girl from friends” and then now it really shows all the work she’s done.. it’s just a vicious cycle. I really hope girls can just learn to be and embrace themselves naturally. But with social media these days, I fear people expect to be perfect at all times 🙄. Anyway, rant over! Courtney Laplante and the Spiritbox crew are hometown legends for us in Vancouver Canada 🍁. Great video and have a great weekend guys!
I don't know how I never noticed the Song In the Key of Life poster in your background! My favorite non-metal album, a true classic! Metalheads if you haven't heard it Stevie Wonder is an absolute legend.
really cool moment in the video when you put your hands on the keys and put it together quickly that you've done this one before :D I do love this version better. the ending gives me chills
David! congrats to you and the team! 100k subs.. much deserved!! you got to check out the band Hail the sun.. their song Domino.. to me they are a mix of Dance gavin dance, circa survive and the Mars Volta..I think you would like them!
Since you do read the comments David 😜 Can you plz plz plz 🥺 react to Loathe & Sleep Token’s collab on “Is It Really You?” Released this week? Goosebumps man! 🥲
I love spiritbox and really enjoyed the reaction and analysis to my favorite version of this awesome song (everyone loves how the end is here compared to the album version, me included). It's the reaction I needed to see today but didn't know or realize existed until the algorithm blessed me this morning. I really hope you will consider and sooner or later react to Hanabie- we love sweets. It's an all female Japanese metal band and they have a very distinct style and sound which for me made them stand out and catch my attention once I'd heard that song and discovered their existence. They are still quite young and have only released one album so far and although they've been getting some buzz in the reactor community lately they're still so relatively unknown that it's almost a crime against music. I really want to see them start blowing up and they'll only get better as time goes by and they gain more experience and write more music. Sorry for the long multi stage rant/comment
The quick flips at the end were a choice for this performance. It's better than the recording, IMO. On the studio version she does the last chorus clean, which is way up in the mix, and overdubbed screams for a layer.
Great video, as always! Would love you to check out Bad Omens! Dethrone is a good heavy one, but Mercy (particularly the unplugged version) is one of my favorites. Their newer singles The Death of Peace of Mind and Like A Villain are both very good too

Thank you for another great video! Always enjoy your reactions. I'd love to see your reaction to Khurangbin, I think you would very much appreciate the musicianship.
You should realy do a reaction of 'Jacob collier - Fix you'. I can see that you have an er for good music and this rendition from Jacob collier is just everything you want from music. Just such a wonderfull Journey through the wonders of sound and emotions. You wont regret it sir.

Speaking of great singers, idk why but I really want you to check out Jonny Craig, preferably his material with Dance Gavin Dance, or just pick any damn song, he's that good !
David, I'm a little concerned that I may have to go into some type of music rehab because since I recently discovered Jinjer and then Spiritbox, I can not stop listening to both bands....Help! 😲 I was never a fan of "metal core" music in the past (especially bands with male singers who scream through nearly the entirety of the songs and every song is at about 160bpm and have non-stop insanely fast guitar/bass riffs. "OK, we know you have great chops and are really angry, but for once, just chill the F**k out and write something slightly slower and melodic"!!! 😂), but I've become obsessed with Jinjer and Spiritbox because of the way Tatiana and Courtney can instantly transition from angelic vocals with great tone and control right into their kick-a$$ powerful screams/growls to accentuate the emotional impact, plus they both have fantastic songwriting with beautiful melodies/lyrics over great chord changes, riffs/grooves and arrangements. OK, I'm done....I gotta go find a therapist!
The belt/screams at the end are absolutely stunning, She is so talented.
Chester Bennington would be proud 🥲
Best female Singer/Fry Screamer don't know how she fry screams like that can that even be healthy long term I worry about that David Townsend is getting close to50 and he is really having hard time doing it at all anymore his body don't heal the same so his throat is less callus. Which is how fry screamer do it they rip the troat to shreds so it's callused up. if you straight hard do it anyway not just add a hint of it but she full out belting fry scream.
They bring a tear to my eye for real
I love the vocal fry she adds to the lines "watching me as..." and "It could all be yours." towards the end of this song. She didn't do that in the album version (or it's harder to hear in the mix/layering if she did) and I think it adds just a little extra special something to the end of this song.
I can hear the vocal fry layered in on the OG recording. But i agree, it adds a ton to the energy of that final chorus.
Yeah, it completely changes the meaning and emotion of those lines... from sadness/melancholy to anger/rage. Beautiful touch
God I wish it was more pronounced in the recording. That was fucking badass!
She definitely does add it in the studio, but it's a bit more buried in the mix in the final version compared to this take
The album version is not as extreme as the one take. She does more of a typical gritty, rock fry sort of thing which was cool because I hadn't really heard that from her before. But I very much prefer this version, with the straight up screams on certain words. Really showcases how she can just turn that on and off at will. Really cool.
Love how she turns sideways and goes into a power stance for the screams! She rocks!
Yeah, like attacking the microphone!
The lyrics in the breakdown that she screams give me chills every single time. It's so powerfully delivered. "I held the power of a dying sun, I climb the altar and take. my. place. as. god" shivers
I love this band... she's a freaking beast of a vocalist.
Sleep Token released a cover of Loathe’s song Is it Really You. Piano and vocals. Just gorgeous. Worth a listen, if not a reaction! Happy Friday 😊
That one hit me kinda like Spiritbox Constance did. Just a lot of emotion.
Oh yes we need a reaction video for that!!!!! ♥
Would love to see his reaction to this cover!
I agree with this

I enjoyed your comments at the end
I've listened to this quite a few times and it gets me everytime. So good!
Highly suggest the song “Is It Really You?” by Loathe and Sleep Token (bands in the same sphere of Spiritbox). Absolutely beautiful with a lot to unpack!
8:46 I encourage you David to do a stripped down piano/vocals only cover of this song. That sounded so beautiful!
Goosebumps every time she drops from the fry-scream back to the beautiful chorus.
Dave, great reaction. I was never a fan of screaming/growling vocals until I heard this woman sing several months ago. She is stunning!!
Watching this reaction for about the 5th time. Great reaction. The added screams at the end truly gives me goosebumps. So glad I found Spiritbox.

Silverchair - the entire Diorama album. Or just pick any song from it. It's a damn masterpiece, and it is 20 years old this year!
I also recommend all of the Starset.
This album by Bad Omens is incredible, and I love when a song connects to another.
And Starset do it a lot in almost every album.
I love her so much. I'm going to see them with Underoath and Bad Omens on the 18th. I can't wait!
Kind of jealous of you haha
@Ana Carolina Pulga I'm kinda bummed because they were supposed to play with Every Time I Die. But since they broke up, Bad Omens are taking their place
going on the 11tth
Sounds like an awesome show! Enjoy!
Holy shit what a show. Underoath got me into this stuff years ago. Spiritbox is probably top 3 bands for me right now. What. A. Show. Have fun dude.
She's a beast! Amazing performance
First, BTW 🤟🏻
I could listen to you talk about Music forever, David
You should check out “Is it really you…” By Loathe and Sleep Token. Just dropped earlier this week. BEAUTIFUL and haunting song. You would love it

My favourite version of this song! 😍 🤩
